Shouwa Genroku Rakugo Shinjuu’s present timeline is set starting arouuuuund 1984 (assuming young Shin is 5 years old at the end of the series in 1989). SGRS is written by an author who comes from a shoujo/female-targeted manga background.
The Year 24 group kicked off a new wave of shoujo in the ‘70s that focused on more transgressive themes, crime and violence, gender ambiguity, age gaps, deliberately unhealthy relationships, pseudo- or actual incest, doom and tragedy, etc. that continued went strong into the early ‘80s with creators like Yoshida Akimi and Saitou Chiho. Not all, but many popular 00s-10s shoujo have toned down these elements since then. SGRS pulls tropes from the shoujo playbook of the classics that no longer saw a lot of use by the time that manga started being published, but were in swing in the time period where it’s set. SGRS us firmly rooted in the past and does that by imitating the narratives in vogue in the time where it’s set.
