Amongst the Navajo, weaving has traditionally been done by women. It regarded as a sacred art; the universe was created by a mythical ancestress known as Spider Woman, who wove the universe on a great loom. However, the woven textiles and designs of the Navajo tribe have no sacred significance. Early blankets were made using cotton and the wool of the Chinna sheep, using traditional upright looms. A Navajo would carryout all the processes of producing blankets, from shearing the sheep and spinning the wool, to dying and weaving. Many women kept large flocks of sheep. As with many traditional crafters, the Navajo weavers were quick to use the innovations introduced by European settlers, specially the ‘Germantown’ commercially produced yarns. These yarns, named after the town where they were produced were extremely fine and superior to the native yarns. The chemically produced dyes prompted a great change in the colours and patterns of the Navajo; the early, simply striped blankets of the first phase were superseded by exciting new designs in brilliant colours, known as ‘Eye Dazzlers’.

Memories (Ram’s flashbacks)

Part one

Ram remembered his childhood like it was yesterday. His mom’s warm smiles his dad’s calming voice. But above all he remembered his little brother. He remembered how he would beam whenever Ram made him something or when he cracked a joke. He remembered his tight hugs that he would give Ram when he was sad and the mess of curly hair on his head. The same hair that Ram would ruffle whenever Ram teased him. The memories of seeing his brother for the first time were fresh in his mind. When his mother had set that precious bundle of joy into Ram’s small hands he knew he would protect him with his life. He used those same hands to brush his little brother’s hair when his mother had lots to do , he used those same hands to prepare his little brother for the day when his parents were busy, and he used those same hands to wipe the tears off his face as he saw his brother dead on the ground that day. He would hold his little brother in an embrace and play the funnest of games with him. Sita would often be at their house but other than that they would be alone together for the majority of the day. Their parents were busy most the time, so Ram made it his duty to protect his brother. But that was one of his duties that he had failed. Until this moment he had not regretted a single thing more than his failure at protecting Chinna. His little brother deserved the whole world and when he passed, Ram could have sworn he lost his universe. That tiny child he raised in his hands lying lifeless by his dead mother. Their pale faces engraving nightmares into Ram’s mind. So when his father told him to set aside everything and fulfill his mission, how could he say no. Those people targeted an innocent child who was just learning of the world. When that day was over Ram cried. He cried himself to sleep. Why had they not killed him. He was the one who tried to help his father, not Chinna. Why had they shot his little brother. Why had fate chose to keep him alive. To suffer knowing he could have saved his family. It was hard to believe that just yesterday night his little brother was cuddling up against him as Ram stroked his hair telling him stories of great heroes and Gods. Heroes and Gods that didn’t even think to help his family. Now next to him was a gap of what should have had his brother, silence that should have been filled with laughter, and a hole in his heart which used to contain love. Now it was stone. A piece of his heart that was locked off from that day. Where had that horrid emotion gotten him. He only let that emotion slip out at times when he was at home. But those moments still filled his dreams and his nightmares. Of a child with bundles of curly hair and full of smiles and that same child lifeless before his eyes. At some point Ram had forgotten that he was ever once truly happy. Without a constant ache clawing at his heart. But Ram didn’t want to burden anyone with his hurt and so he smiled through it. It was indeed convincing. But only he knew of his former joy that haunted him at night and the smiles of his family, his brother, who honestly believed that Ram would save them that dreadful day. Ram felt that maybe if he wasn’t so worthless and actually saved them that day he might have had a brother. Ram could have helped pick out a bride for him alongside his parents and that lost emotion called love would fill his heart once again.

JAM LORE TIME!

he's originally from metropolis

so like he was failing badly at living in gotham when everyone else meets him

j: hey im heading out. gonna get some groceries

everyone else: like that? where's your emergency gas mask? your crowbar? your stun gun? your taser? your-

jam starting to get a little freaked out: do i need all that?

the group takes a trip out to metropolis for a month every summer

yes bear has tried to back out every time. no, they don't let him

bear is the first friend he makes in gotham. despite living together, all 3 of them didn't really talk. and then bear and jam have a class together and it's like all the pieces fall into place

bear is the one who picked him up after hia first rogue attack. jam was hyperventilating and sacred out of his mind and bear sat with him until he calmed down

jam is the best at talking bear out of his hallucinations. mainly because pain is the fastest way to take bear out and the rest of them are really opposed to hurting bear even more. jam's reasoning is "seeing his dead best friend bleeding out on our dining table hurts infinitely more than me punching him in the face"

anyway they use jam's method as a last resort

jam is studying astronomy and whenever someone in the group has a bad day, he takes them to the observatory and points out stars until they feel better

he wants to become a professor. he doesn't know that everyone with a phd gets put on a watchlist in gotham and his friends don't have the heart to tell him

in the earlier drafts of this character, i had him be in a one sided love with mori but i scrapped that bc why would i want to create more drama in the group

i also thought about just pairing up mori/jam and khadija/chinna but like that felt too easy to me

but gay people tend to attract other gay people, going by like every friendship i ever had, so maybe that'll work? idk

his parents were really against him moving to gotham but he decided to go anyway
