Written Analysis

For the brief "Where in the world am I, and what stories can I tell?" I looked at my local area of Chatswood on the North Shore of Auckland and the few ghost stories I had heard. But I hit a dead end in terms of research. Therefore, I looked at haunting stories and their locations throughout Auckland. My project, "Local Haunts of Auckland: Ghost stories and haunted buildings of Auckland", looks at these buildings and the unique aspects that are seen or unseen within them.

I chose this topic as I was really fascinated by the idea of ghost stories. I've often found myself going down the rabbit hole of research around supposedly haunted places. The photography I found always intrigued me, and I wanted to visit the locations and find out more. I hope my photographs can entice the viewer to want to find out more and visit these locations as well as feel a sense of the place and the mystery that lies there.

To find my haunted locations, I first had to do some research. I searched via the internet for places that were supposed to be haunted in Auckland. Some sources were questionable, but for each place, I made sure to find at least a couple of sources. I ended up choosing 4 locations: The Carrington Buildings, previously a mental institution turned Unitec building and now lies fenced off, supposedly to be constructed on. Alberton is an impressive 1860s Victorian Mansion preserved as if one were going back in time. Highwic was another carefully preserved Victorian house that had been extended over the years. Finally, Carlile House, previously a boy's home and training centre built in 1886, burned down in 1912, where the fire is rumoured to have killed 43 boys. For my project, I wanted to show the places with haunted stories attached to them. Highlighting what could be there and the mystery that surrounds them.

For inspiration for my project, I looked at six recent photographers relating to my topic. However, it was hard to find many for a more niche topic. I looked at three concerning ideas of the paranormal: Corinne May Botz and her project of 80 supposedly haunted houses in the United States, Misty Keasler with 'Haunt' a project that explores 13 haunted houses in North America and Elizabeth Moran and 'Record of Cherry Road' also looking at haunted sites where she aimed to photograph the unseen and then three photographers of abandoned locations/houses Matthais Hake with his photos of abandoned architecture captured in an ethereal light, Keith Dotso with his pictures of derelict places across America and Christian Richter photography of abandoned buildings within Europe.

Alongside my chosen photographers, the photographers of the week helped me understand how to show ideas of place via photography. My biggest inspirations included Shiga Lieko's photobook and project Rasen Kaigan (Spiral Shore), which showed the unseen and the history and spirit of a community in Japan. Alongside John Miller as an example of photojournalism, capturing critical moments in time and how to take an impactful photo.

Maiblitz der Sollingschachvereinigung 2022

Normalerweise findet die Blitzmeisterschaft der Sollingschachvereinigung am 1. Mai statt. Da dies angesichts der pandemiebedingten Beschränkungen zu früh gewesen wäre, wurde es heuer auf den Pfingstmontag verlegt. Leider erwies sich der Termin als ziemlich ungünstig, so daß nur 16 Teilnehmer anwesend waren. Antonia Ziegenfuß war haushohe Favoritin und leistete sich nur eine Niederlage gegen ihren Vater. Damit war sie Siegerin der Einzelmeisterschaft (Tabelle bei Hartwig Hake) vor dem Höxteraner Ralf Christian Diedrichs. In der Mannschaftswertung spielten ihr Vater Holger und Ingram Braun mit ihr zusammen. Das reichte trotz schwacher Leistung ihrer Mitstreiter zum Sieg (Tabelle bei Hartwig Hake).
