Posted @withrepost β’ @dhachildrens Are you ready for a spooktacular Book-mas recommendation? Today's Christmas read comes from the brilliant @jonathan.stroud πβ οΈ JS: Ghosts enjoy Christmas like everybody else, and a good spooky tale is a fine corrective to all the enforced jollity and turkey-fuelled good cheer. Charles Dickensβ A Christmas Carol fuses darkness and redemption to create obviously the greatest festive book of all. It should be required yearly reading (just as The Muppetsβ Christmas Carol is THE essential family watch). But Iβm going to go out on a limb here, and recommend M R Jamesβs Ghost Stories as my Xmas pick. These arenβt stories about Christmas, but many of them were written for Christmas. James was Provost at Eton, and he wrote his stories specifically for reading out to friends and pupils on Christmas Eve. Youβve got vengeful spirits, demonic guardians, nasty things hiding in ash trees, white flappy shapes hunting you along deserted beaches, and many other horrors, all hinted at with impeccable Edwardian restraint. In short, theyβre the best creepy stories in English and perfect for the season, so take a peek into the midwinter dark and see whatβs wandering there. Happy Reading! #christmasreading #christmasbooks #christmasadvent #festiveseason #festivereading #ghoststories #spookyreads #christmasghoststories #kidslit #kidsbooksofinstagram #kidsbookstagram #childrenschristmasbooks #childrensbooks #lockwood #lockwoodandco https://www.instagram.com/p/CmJuwigrbkv/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Hi everyone, I hope youβre all well!Itβs that time of year againβthe time for eggnog and Christmas cookies, and as the winter nights draw close and turn chilly, there is no better time for telling a ghost story around the fireplace or, if youβre anything like me, reading them in bed at night. But when did this tradition begin? Why do we like to tell ghost stories at Christmas? Letβs explore!

GHOSTS for Christmas.
Just started reading Catherine Crowe's 'Ghosts and Family Legends: a volume for Christmas' published in 1859. Also about to start her 'The Night-Side of Nature, or Ghosts and Ghost Seers' of 1848.
Recently discovered Catherine, would love to have known her. Strange fact: In February 1854, she was discovered naked in Edinburgh one night, convinced that spirits had rendered her invisible.

My Christmas books stack. I won't get through all of them, but that just gives me something to look forward to next Christmas! But I'm definitely getting through at least one of the Valancourt books this year. Why is it considered an old tradition to have ghost stories at Christmas? * #funaekreads #funaekbooks #instabooks #instareads #spookybook #christmasbooks #christmasghoststories #christmasmysteries #tbr #tbrstack #tbrpile #seasonalreading #britishlibrarycrimeclassics #valancourtbooks #penguinchristmasclassics https://www.instagram.com/p/B5xvVUAAmmQ/?igshid=18d1hwzau2wfq

There is, however, one era above all that I consider the peak of gothic yule. It is upon the enduring seasonal traditions of this era that our own modern customs are founded. Marked by the then-Queen's reign of Britain (and many suppressed and/or stolen lands) I am of course speaking of the Victorian period. π‘ The 19th century was a time of great change; it was hugely problematic in many areas, but social reforms saw improvements - or movement toward improvements - in many areas. The electrification of the nation saw vast and rapid development in the direction of modernity. The industrial revolution commercialised custom. Stories, once travelling aloud from person to person, were available in print. The Victorians, already obsessed with the paranormal, were accustomed to telling spooky stories around the Christmas fireplace. Now the great storytellers of their generation could pull up a stool and share their tales in homes across the nation. π‘ Many of these tales endure to this day - Charles Dickens, Elizabeth Gaskell, Wilkie Collins, M. R. James, Bram Stoker, R. L. Stevenson... All feature across the collections pictured above and are, I am sure, familiar to many of you, at least by name. π‘ As I dip into the pictured selection of [not exclusively] Victorian ghost stories, I am curious to know: βDo you have a favourite short, Victorian ghost story? βIs there a tale or author you favour each festive season? . #bookstagram #bookstack #victoriangothic #ghoststories #shortstories #spookynerd #gothic #generallygothic #christmasghoststories #christmasreading #charlesdickens (at Victorian London) https://www.instagram.com/p/CXuOaLooR92/?utm_medium=tumblr

Time for the tradition of the spooky Christmas tale with the arrival of the Misty Winter Special from @britcomics. Instead of the usual collection of short stories weβve gotten in other specials from them this year, this features just two longer tales. And theyβre both really good and really creepy! #thismakesmehappy #comics #britishcomics #misty #mistycomic #mistywinterspecial #treasuryofbritishcomics #horror #horrorcomics #christmas #holiday #holidaycomics #christmascomic #christmascomics #christmasghoststories https://www.instagram.com/p/CIbDLkWBUDN/?igshid=1hj8a11raqt33

Someone apparently got a little too giddy on the Victorian Ghost Story at Christmas idea and commissioned an adaption every weekday this week, plus a drama about the great MISTER James himself on Saturday and next week further adaptions of his stories. Just like any other time of year really.Β
