Hi there! Keyleth from Critical Role here, I’m looking for everyone else from Vox Machina! I don’t have many memories but I know my canon was odd. In my canon, I was dating both Vex and Vax in a sort of polyam relationship, and I remember Pike getting married to Percy instead. Scanlan stayed single, as did Grog. So Vex’s line in Kith and Kin, about how she’s come to expect every kindness shown to her to not come without strings or how there was always a cruelty hiding behind it, and it just makes me even more emotional about the gifts that Percy gave her.

He crafted special arrows for her because they delighted her.

He made a seat for her flying broom because he needed her to be safe.

He gave her a TITLE, because even though in his eyes, she is worth more than any person of wealth or nobility he’s ever met, he still wanted to give her that boost to her self-esteem.

And there were never any expectations from him for any of these gifts, no strings or secret cruelties.

His only motivation was making her happy.

the other thing i really appreciate about kith and kin is its constant acknowledgement that, of the twins, vex is the more flighty one who struggles with commitment issues

like that trait always gets placed on vax in the fandom consciousness? but vax's only problem is that, if anything, he loves too much (as seen with the whole keyleth gilmore situation), but even that, he took a step back, evaluated his options, chose a person, and then apologised to gilmore but he didn't want to be someone who cheated on his partner or caused unnecessary conflict

and he was the first out of vox machina to say "hey after we kill the dragons why don't we just retire and all go home?"

but vex hates being tied down because she's afraid of it, she struggles to get attached to people, she struggles constantly with the idea that vax might have attachments outside of her because she's scared of no longer being his most important person, and the one i find most interesting, even after percy offered her a title in whitestone, everything she thought she wanted, even while she was in the process of earning it, she didn't know how to deal with that idea

quoting directly from vex's inner monologue in 94, "Is this worth it? What are you going to do, stay here? The whole point of you and your brother was to go and wander and not be behooven to anything, to be free. But then, what is freedom at that point?"

and this is something vex runs into constantly in the novel, she's put on the back foot whenever she's reminded that other people have homes to go back to and people they love and doesn't know how to face the fact that her brother might be one of them, so she just deflects and tries to run away to the next problem

and it's a facet of her character i've always loved and think people do a disservice to her complexity when they ignore it (plus like, perc'ahlia works because they're both traumatised as fuck and working through it, not just because she saved him), and i'm really glad it's getting the attention it deserves
