botanic gardens
01.01.22 - SATURDAY
first day of the new year! spent this rainy afternoon splashing through boga with camera in hand and umbrella wedged awkwardly under one arm. got wet anyway but had a wonderful time :) here are some of the creatures we met!
was greeted at the gate by this rufous-legged grasshopper (Xenocatantops humilis).
some hymenopteran. not gonna attempt to ID, just leaving this here because it's a cool pic :)
an ornate coraltail (Ceriagrion cerinorubellum), a common species of damselfly. i think damselflies look really cool :D
an iconic deep red: the male common parasol (Neurothemis fluctuans). i learned recently that the thin coloured band near the apex of each dragonfly wing is known as a pterostigma. it comprises a group of cells that weigh heavier than others, and its strategic position in the wing allows for stable gliding at higher speeds. read more here :)
a male crimson dropwing (Trithemis aurora). the hue of this dragonfly makes it look like it feeds on highlighters...
a female common scarlet (Crocothemis servilia). many female dragonflies are similar shades of yellowish-brown, but this species can be distinguished by the distinctive dark band along the top of its abdomen.
the mute swan (Cygnus olor), a native of the eurosiberia region. a pair of these swans reside in the swan lake at boga. mute swans aren't actually mute, though they are the least vocal species of swan. (ref)
some junglefowl butt ;D had hoped to snap some shots of the bird that we think of as the boga mascot -- the white-breasted waterhen -- but no luck. will go wbw hunting again soon c:

What are a few species of dragonfly which you find particularly interesting/noteworthy/aesthetically unique or impressive?
My favorites are the crimson and violet dropwings just because they’re so pretty! Here’s a crimson dropwing, and the violet looks similar:

It was a challenge to capture this little creature in flight. Too small to find autofocus.! Finally found this one hovering over the lake below me and to get the wings frozen, kept shutter at 1/3200 and shot in continuous shooting mode.
