It's strange how hated Loghain is in the fandom but how loved Cullen is.
Loving Loghain elicits disgust from most people, while loving Cullen is generally accepted. Even though both of them have committed horrendous crimes. But the difference is that Cullen is constantly coddled by the fans and the devs.
Whereas Loghain is not, you can give him a punishment that fits his crimes. The "best" case scenario for him is getting forcefully conscripted into the Grey Wardens and getting shipped off to Orlais, of all places. The "worst" - well, you get to literally behead him, in front of everyone attending the Landsmeet and no one will oppose you except Anora who just got sprayed by a gallon of her father's blood.
Meanwhile you can't even be particularly rude to Cullen, let alone call him out on his bullshit. And he is never truly faced with consequences for his genuinely abhorrent actions. Also the "redemption" he gets is frankly nonexistent.
Yeah Loghain was a main villain...but so was Cullen...?? Did his fans collectively forget about that?
Yeah Cullen has a tragic backstory...but so does Loghain? Does that excuse their actions? No, but a whole lot of Cullen fans try to bring all that into a conversation when someone criticises their fave.
So allow me a similar luxury. Not to excuse Loghain's actions of course but to get on even footing with everyone trying to wave away Cullen's crimes via invoking the power of a tragic backstory:
During the Orlesian invasion Loghain's family lost their farm due to increasing taxes, essentially making them homeless.
The resistance they put up was futile in the face of the Orlesian soldiers who easily overpowered them and subsequently made Gareth and Loghain watch them violate Loghain's mother before brutally murdering her.
After fleeing Oswin, they were on the run until Maric unknowingly lead the Orlesians into their camp. Loghain ran away with him, however to buy them time, amongst others Gareth sacrificed himself.
Loghain had no siblings and both his parents were dead at this point.
He had that whole situationship with Rowan that he could not realistically pursue in good conscience as she was betrothed to Maric. This put a strain on Loghain's relationship with them both.
In 9:25 Dragon, Maric disappeared. Loghain tirelessly searched for his closest friend for two years.
Shortly after, in 9:28 Dragon, Loghain also lost Celia, his wife.
I'd say he lived around 80% of his life in utter misery. Not that it nullifies anything vile he has done but since so many people love to bring up Cullen's past while defending him...
So let's not be hypocritical.
Either be hellbent on hating Cullen too- or have mercy for Loghain as well.

Like genuinely love checking on your blog for the first time in a while and coming back to dragon age stuff. It's like putting on a favorite sweater again. Anyway I think the HoF and most versions of Hawke would be best friends and Cassandra's worst nightmare.
I know in my heart that Cullen knew when Hawke arrived because a chill went down his spine. A swift and sudden certainty that he was, in the next ten minutes, about to get fucking roasted for his weird cloak

NINTHHHH welcome back to DADWC!! Hope this inspires you to get back in the swing of things: Confess to me. I'll be your judge; promise I'll condemn. - from the Salvation lyric prompts!
@dadrunkwriting Okay so what if the rebel mages, knowing about all the fuckshit Cullen pulled as a templar, decided to actually put him on trial for his crimes? And what if the Inquisitor oversaw the trial and...the execution ⚔️⚔️⚔️⚔️ (idk why I put swords here; Shielan is a mage lmfao) ANYWAY here it is!! (and I'm NOT editing it because i am being good and staying aligned with the SPIRIT of the EVENT dammit!! so sorry if typos lol)
_
Cullen stood before the the statue of Andraste. The Chantry, dimly lit and silent, save for the distant shouting of the crowd outside, served as his final refuge. For years, he'd thought about dying. His life had always belonged to the Maker, and he'd spent most of it bending to His will, though not happily. Dutifully. It wasn't a pleasant task, guarding the mages - so many had been resistant to His will. But at the time, he'd thought it necessary. Sometimes he still thought it necessary.
He never could make that thought go away. Couldn't replace it with any other thoughts, couldn't wish or pray it into nonexistence. It stuck there, hard against his softening heart, like black tar, almost as unbending as the Maker's will. Almost.
In the weeks before his trial, he'd come off lyrium - and damn near died doing it. Inquisition mages, once known as rebels and now heralded as leaders among the revolution, sent him letters of rage. Occasionally one had popped down to the dungeon themselves to berate him - always accompanied by guards, because for reasons he hadn't understood then, the Inquisitor wanted him alive.
Today, this morning, as he stood before Fiona and the Inquisitor, it all came together. The mages' petition to have him incarcerated was merely the beginning. While he struggled day after day in the cells below Skyhold, they waited, praying for his demise. When he lived, they raged. It wasn't enough that he suffered. They needed payment and they demanded it in blood.
He turned from Andraste and stepped into the crisp, mountain air. The crowd bellowed, pulsating with anger. It was time.
Inquisitor Lavellan stepped forward. "Cullen Stanton Rutherford, former Knight-Commander of Kirkwall, you have seen a fair and honest trial for your crimes.
Let this be a lesson to all who would dare turn their back on the Inquisition and its people: crimes against Thedosian mages by former templars will not be tolerated, nor taken lightly. Regardless of penance, your stain upon our people remains, and today it will be paid for in blood."
The crowd cheered, ravenous. Cullen sank to his knees and bowed his head. The Inquisitor readied her staff.
"On this day, Cullen Rutherford, you are condemned."

If I remember correctly, Cullen also smugly says "you were always weak" to Samson during the trial. That always rubbed me the wrong way. Cullen goes from a cushy position in the Templars to a cushy position in the Inquisition. He is warm, a place to sleep and food in his belly. Samson literally had to survive on the street with an awful addiction. Yet the game tries to sell us the idea of Cullen as the "good" addict while Samson as the bad one.
With Cullen you really do get the impression that the events of Broken Circle are the only bad thing that's ever happened to him. Every other part of his life has gone perfectly for him. He spends the series getting put into more and more cushy positions! Templar to Knight-Captain to Knight-Commander to commander of the Inquisition's forces? Come on, everything's been coming up Cullen for the past decade. And when things don't go his way he immediately falls to pieces and can't do more than tell other people to murder innocents for him. And then he looks at Samson, who was thrown out of the Templars for showing a mage basic kindness and spent the next decade on the streets scrambling for survival while suffering from an addiction that he knew was destroying him but couldn't shake, and tells him he was weak? Samson shows far more strength than Cullen ever does!
...Also, it does give just a slight impression that Cullen—who shakes his lyrium addiction with only one cutscene even slightly suggesting that going cold turkey is having a negative effect on him—is calling Samson weak for not being able to shake off his addiction, which is bullshit on so many levels. Notably Samson was having to survive on the streets in Kirkwall while Cullen first had the second-highest position in the Gallows (which he was given because he hated mages and Meredith liked that) and was then just handed the role of Inquisition commander despite having zero qualifications beyond "was a high-ranking Templar who led death squads". It's not Samson who freaks out and either tries to incite others to murder or throws tantrums like an impotent child the moment things stop going his way, Cully-Wully.

idk Cully wully maybe it’s bc Thomwall actually feels bad for the awful things he’s done and is willing to own up to it and make it right
instead of pretending that it didn’t happen or that he was ““““lied to by Meredith”“““ or literally only turning around and standing up at the last second bc his corrupt boss was threatening a human noble and not doing something sooner
ya know. like how a redemption arc actually works. my Hawkes absolutely gave this Zapp Brannigan lookalike tool the lip scar

Cullen Rutherford is trans now because I said so and because I hate Greg Ellis, so now my Inquisitor Oretta Lavellan is a trans elf mage because tbh, I always had her being Trans in mind but, because I rushed through her playthrough, I never really expanded on her character to make her my OC, so now I'm gonna do exactly that.
So she and her Cully Wully are a tft couple.

I keep seeing c*llen-positive dragon age things and I am so strongly resisting the urge to start shit because it's not like the straight women are ever gonna fucking listen to criticism of their "precious little cully-wully" but I really just want to stop seeing c*llen-positive everything when I'm looking for dragon age stuff
