Super Fly is the third studio album from legendary multi-hyphenate musician Curtis Mayfield and serves as the official soundtrack to the hugely successful 1970’s Blaxploitation film of the same name. Released ahead of its box office debut, Super Fly the album outperformed its movie companion with the help of two RIAA Certified Gold singles, which both sold over a million copies each by year’s end. The first was Grammy-nominated “Freddie’s Dead”, which enjoyed
peak chart position at #4 on the US Billboard Hot 100 and #2 on the R&B chart that year; followed by the title track “Super Fly”, which peaked #8 and #5 respectively on the same charts.
Mayfield, an accomplished singer/songwriter and self-taught guitar virtuoso, wrote and composed the entire album using the movie script as a guide. His groundbreaking lyrics paint a stark picture of poverty and drug abuse in urban centers, not too dissimilar from Mayfield’s own upbringing in Chicago’s notorious Cabrini-Green housing projects. This definitive album set the tone for a new era of socially conscious funk and soul music – a natural extension of Mayfield’s leading role as a cultural voice of the Black Power movement and early involvement in the Civil Rights era the decade before. Mayfield’s ability to use his music as a platform for civil rights and black pride paved the way for generations of artists to come.
The legacy of Super Fly and Curtis Mayfield continues with an exclusive merchandise capsule collection and vinyl re-release. The capsule collection will include a hat, keychain, and button-up T-shirt inspired by the earthy-tones of the 1970’s and distinct Super Fly album logo.
The vinyl re-release of Super Fly has been meticulously reproduced using the original album lacquers cut from the master analog tapes and beautifully repackaged in a stunning gold color variant.
