I'm really digging Tezuka's Black Jack. I'm unfamiliar with most of his works but the new sf6 collab made me realize I should know more about him for being so influential so I went to go and read it, there's something really cool about how grounded and dark all of these chapters are while still being super fantastical? A murder victim's donated cornea showing the patient visions of the murderer, a teratoid cystoma that actively doesn't want to be excised (and by that metric, killed) getting put into a synthetic body. I love this

Inspired by Kurō Hazama (aka Black Jack), and his work on Pinoko, Dr. Mohou Han decided to save a teratoid cystoma. However unlike Pinoko, this cystoma does not have a complete set of organs necessary to construct a full human being. In fact, it had multiple copies of certain organs and missing on some. But Dr. Han was persistent. He arranged what organs and tissues were available into something that was at least barely alive. He knew that whatever creature he will be creating will lead a life of pain, a monster if ever it will survive. So, he decided to sever all nerves into its thalamus to spare it from feeling pain. After hours of painstaking surgery, finally, Dr. Han had finished and declared “You are Kiruto!” Kiruto stood up laboriously. From its multiple eyes tears started flowing. I really want a Black Jack anime that’s closer to the original manga in content and tone.

The 2004 anime does stick pretty closely to the manga stories but it bends over backwards to make it more appealing to little kids by significantly expanding Pinoko’s role, including school scenes with kids Pinoko knows, and even turning a silly dog that was in one chapter of the manga into a staple of the Black Jack household.

The OVA series on the other hand is very good but the 50 minute episodes significantly expanding upon short 15-20 page chapters, the darker tone, very loose adapting of stories, and emphasis mostly on the chapters with supernatural elements, make it feel like an entirely different beast from the original manga.

God I would kill just for a proper adaptation of the Teratoid Cystoma chapter. It was too dark for the tv anime to include and its only partially included in the OVA as a flashback.

@surelytomorrow I had this heartbreaking scenario that Pinoko, after the events of Teratoid Cystoma Part 2, she dreams that she's in the dark space again. Even though it's pointless, Pinoko calls out to her would-be brother, says that she's sorry for not saving him, sobbing that it's all her fault that he isn't alive anymore - maybe even goes as far as to say that Pinoko was the one who killed him.

(Scenario aside, manga Pinoko really doesn't have any named friends that she could go hang out with, unlike the anime (which I am forever grateful for in that regard). She only has Black Jack. Pinoko might've even developed the mindset to not get too close with any kid patients because they might hate her or straight up leave and/or die.)

Telemedicine System Proves Effective [May 25 Juche 107 (2018)]

Not long ago a pregnant woman in critical condition was taken to the Tongsinhung-ri People’s Hospital in Jaeryong County, South Hwanghae Province.

In previous cases she would have been sent to provincial or central hospitals, but the hospital took correct measures for treatment in consultation with Pyongyang Maternity Hospital through telemedicine system and saved the mother and baby.

The Hwaphyong County People’s Hospital in Jagang Province, too, had technical consultation with competent medical staff of Kim Man Yu Hospital in Pyongyang through the telemedicine system and succeeded in the operation on a patient for pancreatic cystoma. At present the telemedicine system is established between central hospitals, including Pyongyang Medical College Hospital of Kim Il Sung University, Kim Man Yu Hospital, Okryu Children’s Hospital and Pyongyang Maternity Hospital, and people’s hospitals in every province, city and county, even in several ris.

The local hospitals would consult central hospitals online to confirm their uncertain diagnoses and give correct and timely treatment. They would also ask for medical services for the patients suffering from chronic diseases and in preoperative situations, so that the latter receives medical treatment in local hospitals without being sent to the central hospitals.

The telemedicine system enables the local staff to regularly take technical lectures and raise their qualifications. It makes a tangible contribution to eliminate mortality from tetanus and improve the treatment of diabetes and other diseases.

Ri Myong Chol from Kapsan County, Ryanggang Province, who is suffering from a third-degree burn, says, “Though far away from Pyongyang, I am now seeing competent doctors in the central hospital through the telemedicine system. I’m sure of my recovery.”

Pak Kyong Hui from Taean District, Nampho, says, “Thanks to the telemedicine system, Pyongyang Maternity Hospital conducts regular medical check-ups for women across the country and treats their diseases. This is very good.”

The telemedicine system accessible to everyone free of charge benefits them greatly in health promotion.
