BREAKING NEWS!!!
Queen Margrethe of Denmark announced during her New Years Eve Speech she will abdicate on 14 January 2024. Crown Prince Frederik will become King.
"In February this year I underwent extensive back surgery. It went well, thanks to the skilled healthcare staff who took care of me. Of course, the operation also gave rise to thinking about the future - whether the time had come to leave the responsibility to the next generation.
I have decided that now is the right time. On 14 January 2024 – 52 years after I succeeded my beloved father – I will step down as Queen of Denmark. I leave the throne to my son Crown Prince Frederik." - Queen Margrethe of Denmark

FROM PUBLIC MOURNING TO PUBLIC CELEBRATION ✨
—15 January 1972: Little under a day after her father, King Frederik IX, had died and she had become Denmark's first official female monarch, 31-year-old Margrethe II was proclaimed Queen from the balcony of Christiansborg Palace by Prime Minister Jens Otto Krag.
—14 January 2024: Little under an hour after his mother, Queen Margrethe II, had signed a declaration of her abdication at a Council of State – becoming the first Danish monarch in 878 years to do so – 55-year-old Frederik X was proclaimed King from the balcony of Christiansborg Palace by Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen.

Her Majesty Queen Margrethe II of Denmark has chosen to abdicate from the Danish throne the 14th of January, after 52 years on the throne.
She told the whole kingdom of Denmark, and the rest of the world, live on television during her new year speech to the people.
There has not been a voluntary abdication in Denmark since the early medieval times (1100-1200)
The Queen has always said that she will sit on the throne until her last breath, which is why her abdication comes as a surprise to everyone.
Her son Crown Prince Frederik and his wife Crown Princess Mary will take over as King Frederik X and Queen Mary.
Thank you, your majesty, for all you have done for us and how you have always shown your love and respect to the Danish people. We look forward to seeing you hopefully enjoy your abdication and hopefully we will still see more of your incredible creative mind . We have trust in our new King and Queen as we already know that you have prepared them well for their new job.
Thank you ❤️

Queen Margrethe 2. of Denmark abdicates
This has nothing to with TMNT, but since I'm Danish, this is a big deal to me.
Last night, during her New Years speech, the queen officially said she abdicates, reason being her health and age. I fully understand and respect her decision, but I will miss my chain smoking, hotdog eating queen.
From the 14th of January 2024, Denmark's reigning monarchs will be King Frederik 10. along side his wife, the soon to be Queen Mary.
Long live the Queen in all her future endeavors, and long live the future King.

QUEEN MARGETHE II OF DENMARK ABDICATES
The world's only Queen regnant announced in her live broadcast New Year's Speech that she intends to abdicate in favour of her son, Frederik (who will become Frederik X of Denmark) on 14 January 2024 – the 52nd anniversary of her ascension to the throne.
In February this year I underwent extensive back surgery. Everything went well, thanks to the competent health personnel, who took care of me. Inevitably, the operation gave cause to thoughts about the future – whether now would be an appropriate time to pass on the responsibility to the next generation.
I have decided that now is the right time. On 14th January, 2024 – 52 years after I succeeded my beloved father – I will step down as Queen of Denmark. I will hand over the throne to my son Crown Prince Frederik.

Highlights of todays abdication and accession to the throne.
Queen Margrethe II leaving the Kingdom in the hands of her son after signing her abdication and giving the seat at the end of the table to his majesty King Frederik X.
"Her Majesty Queen Margrethe II has abdicated. Long live his majesty King Frederik X" - Mette Frederiksen, prime minister of Denmark. There are no coronation in Denmark. Instead, the prime minister will make a proclamation on the balcony of the Danish Parliament, Christiansborg. She will say the words three times before the entire kingdom will shout "Hurra" (Hurray) nine times.
The police of Copenhagen had estimated that about 150.000 people would make their way to Copenhagen where most of them would be at Christiansborg Castle to witness the proclamation
The Royal family from left to right:
Princess Isabella, Crown Prince Christian, King Frederik X, Queen Mary, Princess Josephine and Prince Vincent.
The King receiving applause and thanking the Danes by putting his hands on his heart.
The King and Queen receiving the love from those many thousands of people who celebrated and congratulated them on this historical day.
The King and Queen leaving Christiansborg castle and making their way to their home at Amalienborg Castle in the carriage Queen Margrethe II arrived in.
Truly an amazing day with an indescribable love from the entire kingdom of Denmark 🇩🇰 Greenland 🇬🇱 and the Faroe Islands 🇫🇴.
As the incredible Queen Margrethe said before leaving the room.
God Bless the King 👑

My 2 cents on the abdication:
1. This has nothing to do with the cheating scandal. You don't make a monumental decision like this based on rumours
2. I don't think there's anything noble about "hanging on to your last breath", when you no longer can attend engagements and work. Your heir is basically doing the King role anyway at this point
3. In interviews Margaret has always said she'd stick with it till she died but really what else is she going to say to the public? Like be realistic it would be a PR nightmare to say "oh maybe ill do this for a few years then when I dont feel like it will give it up ". But also people's feelings can change, maybe she had planned to do it until she died but can see now that she wants to enjoy the rest of her time quietly.
4. I think abdication is great cos you can still be around to offer support to your heir and on a personal note be there to support your child and see them grow
