okay so, I cannot include "the folk of the air" series by Holly Black in this. enemies to lovers, faes, women with daggers, betrayal, angst *chef's kiss*

if you'd like some fantasy romance I'd say:

"An enchantment of ravens" by Margaret Rogerson (faes), "Neon Gods" by Katee Roberts (only if you're 18+!) and if you enjoy Greek mythology retellings. This is steamy so be aware. Still, in the greek mythology romance, we have "Hades" by Carly Spade. She had a whole series with other Gods too (Apollo and Eros among others) if you're interested.

(I have more recs for greek mythology let me know if you want more.)

"A deal with the elf king" by Elize Kova is amazing and I loved it. strangers to enemies to lovers. beauty and the beast and hades and Persephone retelling.

if you like pirates and strong female characters, I really enjoyed "The daughter of the pirate king".

Since I'm reading a thriller at the moment, I have to include "The secret history" by Donna Tartt. It's a must-read, it's a classic, it's dark academia with references to Greek literature.

Oh and also, anything Dan Brown is a wonderful read. My favourite is "Inferno".

There’s a throbbing behind your eyes, and your side aches as you shift beneath the soft silk covers. Then you frown. Silk covers? Where are you?

Then you remember.

Climbing through the pillars of stone that support the foundations of the Cavern of Stygia - known for its pitch black tunnels and the low survival rate of explorers who dare to brave the darkness. The torch lighting your way had gone out, and you had squeezed your way through a large fissure in the rock after catching a glimpse of light.

Feeling your way through the dark, you thought you could hear voices in the distance. Then there was a sickening crack, and the floor seemed to dissolve beneath you. You must have lost consciousness. But that still doesn’t explain the silk sheets.

The low light in the room helps with your aching head, as you open your eyes slowly to adjust to your surroundings. As you tilt your head to survey everything in your vicinity, you hear a voice remark softly,

“You’re awake.”

Sitting up hurriedly in alarm, you ignore the searing pain as your body protests against the sudden motion. A cushioned headboard presses into your spine as you back away from the figure standing at the end of the bed.

A pair of impossibly dark eyes meet your frantic ones, and a shiver runs through you as you note his lack of irises.

Swallowing hard, you try to keep your breathing steady as you come to the realisation that you are in the company of a Dark Elf - meaning that you are in a colossal amount of trouble.

If the pitch black eyes weren’t indication enough, as your eyes adjust to the dim light more of his features become clear to you.

Pale skin, with deep scars that trace their way over his cheeks and forehead. There’s some dark facial hair surrounding his lips that creeps over his jawline. His hair looks thick, though it’s currently slicked back, and it’s just as dark as his eyes.

Your eyes flicker briefly over the room, taking note of the contents. Everything looks ornate and luxurious - all in varying shades of black with shimmering silver accents threaded throughout the room.

“You’re a clever little thing aren’t you?” he muses, and you raise your eyebrows questioningly, hardly daring to voice your thoughts. “Awake for barely a minute and you’ve already picked up on three exits.”

Trying to minimise your shaking, you keep your eyes fixed on him.

“I hope I don’t have to tell you not to bother. You won’t get through me.”

He’s right. There’s no chance of you fighting him off. Out of all the species of Elves, Dark Elves are the most dangerous. They pride themselves on their ruthlessness, and are trained to kill from infancy. His smile twists dangerously,

“Though I wouldn’t mind if you tried.”

They’re also known for their sadistic nature.

You remain still, every muscle in your body tensed in wary anticipation. The elf in front of you is still watching you with his dark eyes, a spark of curiosity dancing in their depths.

“You know what I am?” he asks, and you nod slowly. There’s a small crease of confusion that crinkles his forehead, making the scars there shift slightly. “And you’re not screaming?”

Your voice is a little hoarse as you remark quietly,

“I doubt screaming would help me.”

He laughs, and it’s a clear, chilling sound.

“So clever,” he remarks in a sigh, before asking in a small voice, “Will you say it?”

“A Dark Elf.”

He grins, leaning closer, his hands press onto the obsidian covers at the foot of the bed.

“Would the clever little human like to share their knowledge?” He phrases it like a question, but you scour your memory quickly.

“Dark Elves live deep underground. They rarely visit the world above, and are known for their efficiency with weapons and fighting.”

As your voice trembles, you keep your focus on his body language, waiting for him to move towards you, and your words trail off at the end. His gaze is far too direct and you don’t know whether you should meet his eyes or look away.

“Anything else?” he prompts, knowing that there’s one fact in particular that’s been burning bright in your thoughts.

After a shaky breath you add,

“Dark Elves enjoy torturing humans.”

He shrugs lightly as he moves slowly around the bed. There isn’t a moment where you take your eyes off him.

“That’s actually a common misconception.”

A tentative frown pulls at your features before you ask quietly,

“You don’t like torturing humans?”

“I didn’t say that,” he says with a smirk. “It’s usually more of a personal preference.”

Not certain whether you’ll like the answer, you decide not to ask him what his particular preference is. He doesn’t seem eager to hurt you, but that doesn’t mean anything.

He leans his hip against the bed, his eyes still fixed on you.

“Did you know we have a matriarchal society?” he asks, his head tilted to watch your reaction. You shake your head, and he continues. “Meaning that, whilst I have value as a Lieutenant, my standing in society will always be lesser - without a wife.”

The corner of his mouth curls when he catches the confusion in your eyes, and he shifts closer.

“Humans are quite the rarity for us. Every elf dreams of having a human spouse.” His eyes roam appreciatively over you, and your cheeks warm instinctively. “Soft and warm, where we are cold and hard.”

There’s an edge of longing in his voice, before he sits down on the bed beside your legs, and he remarks offhandedly,

“You have no idea how many people I had to fight off to bring you home with me.”

Your eyes widen when you realise what he means. That he had most likely killed the other elves that had tried to take you for themselves.

He reaches out, tracing a finger over your cheek delicately. His fingers are pale and cold, and a shiver runs through you at the feeling of his skin brushing so tenderly against yours. His voice is quiet as he purrs,

“With a little treasure like you for a wife, I’d be practically royalty.”

You retreat, shaking your head as your heart hammers in your chest. Your fingers curl tight in the pillow beneath you, and the elf in front of you tilts his head as he watches your reaction.

“No?” he asks softly, and you swallow hard.

“I can’t marry you.” He pushes himself off the bed, crossing over to the drawn curtains. Narrowing your eyes in expectation, you wait for the room to be bathed in light.

Instead, the level of light barely increases.

“You think you’d survive out there on your own?”

The smooth wooden floor is cold against your bare feet as you cross the room, eyeing the man beside you warily before you turn to look out from behind the glass. As you stare out of the window you feel the weight of his gaze on you, but you’re too shocked to care.

You’re in an underground cavern, dark rock enclosed around you for as far as you can see. Roads and pathways have been carved into the stone, which allow elves to wind their way along the streets. Strange, pale lanterns provide the only light, as well as the low light from the windows of houses.

You’re surprised by how beautiful the buildings are, all made of stone with intricate carvings that include mixtures of precious stones and metals which simmer in the muted glow of the lanterns.

His voice is low, and he’s closer than you realised as he speaks.

“There’s countless elves that would see you as their own personal toy. Your only purpose would be a pretty thing for them to break.”

“And you don’t?”

“I won’t hurt you,” he insists, his voice serious. Then he smirks. “Not unless you ask me to.”

“How can I trust you?” you reason, and he shrugs lightly.

“You can’t. But I have an offer for you.” You eye him cautiously as he continues, “You can’t go back to your own world yet.” You frown at him, alarmed by his assurance.

“Why?”

“The only way out is through climbing the Starless Steps.” Your frown deepens, and he continues. “The only time the Steps are visible is during the height of the Full Moon, meaning that you have a whole month until you can leave.”

The Starless Steps. The moon must have been at its height when you climbed down, and it must have shifted when you were plunged into darkness. Which was how you had ended up falling down and losing consciousness.

“What’s your offer?” you ask warily.

“Spend the month with me.” Your eyes widen, and he hurries to continue his explanation. “If, by the day before the next Full Moon, you don’t want to marry me then I will personally take you to the Steps.”

“And if I try to leave now?”

“I’d say that’s a waste of a good opportunity - for us both.”

“For us both?” you remark, with doubt in your voice. He nods,

“Yes. I get granted the social status I want, and you get to live a life of luxury.”

“Who says I want that?”

“Everybody wants that.” He looks around the room. “All of this could be yours, clothes, jewels, the house itself.”

“I don’t even know your name,” you say softly, and he turns back to study you with his dark eyes. There’s a crease between his brows for a moment, then his expression softens,

“It’s Billy.”

Such a normal name - you’re rather taken aback by it. You look down at the floor briefly.

“Just Billy?”

He shakes his head lightly, with a soft grin,

“Billy Russo.”

Pairing: Dark Elf!Billy Russo x Fem!Reader

Summary: Billy introduces you to his world, and the two of you grow closer together.

Turning to look at Billy for the third time, you frown at him. The two of you have been walking through the streets together, but he keeps trailing behind you, much to your confusion.

It’s been a few days since you first woke up in Billy’s bed. He had insisted that you stay in the house for your own safety, which has been fine by you. The thought of being around so many Dark Elves makes you nervous, though you’ve slowly been getting used to Billy’s company. The two of you get along well, though you’ve been trying to keep your distance by reminding yourself that you’ll be leaving in a month.

After an uneasy night’s sleep, you had joined Billy for breakfast. The two of you had hardly enough time to start a conversation before the mail arrived, including an invitation to dine with the Sovereignia.

Billy had explained to you that she was the ruler of the Dark Elves of Stygia, and that she approved all marriages amongst her people. Due to your eventful arrival, and Billy’s apparently very public claim on you, she had extended an invitation to you both for her to approve your impending marriage.

Billy had assured you that this wouldn’t effect the deal between you both, so you had agreed to join him for dinner at the palace.

Understandably, you are on edge. The other Dark Elves stare at you as they make their way by you, clearly curious at the sight of a human walking through their city. Billy had told you humans were a rarity, but you hadn’t realised how much you would stand out.

“Little human?” Billy murmurs in an attempt to gain your attention. In response you hum quietly, not exactly thrilled by his nickname for you but not wanting to argue with this many eyes on you. “You need to walk in front of me.”

“Why?” you ask quietly. He leans closer to talk beside your ear.

“I told you, we have a matriarchal society. Women walk in front.”

You look back at him sharply.

“That’s so stupid.” He tilts his head, amusement in his eyes, and your frustrated expression falters. “Not to insult your culture, it’s just… can’t you walk next to me?” He shakes his head. You sigh in defeat, before adding weakly, “I don’t even know where we’re going.”

“I’ll give you the directions, and I’ll only be two steps behind you.”

“Can you at least hold my hand?” you ask tentatively.

Billy has seen horrific things over the course of his life, but nothing has tugged at his heartstrings like the sound of you asking to hold his hand. He entwines his fingers with yours, revelling in the small point of contact.

Your skin is so much warmer than his, and he has the sudden urge to move closer and nestle his entire body against yours. He can only imagine what it would be like to fall asleep beside you. Holding your warm body in his arms as you sleep.

Dark elves are light sleepers, he would end up waking up with every shift of your body, allowing him to admire your sleeping face.

He shakes his head lightly, trying to focus on where he’s directing you. It’s only then that he notices how tight your grip is, and he realises that you’re afraid. He squeezes your fingers between his own in what he hopes is a reassuring gesture.

He doesn’t know much about humans, he’s been relying on the similarities between you both to ensure he doesn’t do anything wrong.

It doesn’t take too long for you to reach the entranceway of the palace, which is a huge building made of black marble with slivers of gold running through the veins.

“Wait a second,” Billy says, his hand slipping from yours to curl around your bicep briefly. You turn to look at him as he tugs at the bottom of his pants. He slides a knife out, and you frown at him. “There’s no weapons allowed in the palace.”

“None at all?” you ask, your brows furrowed in thought, and he nods as he approaches a table with a series of trays on it.

Billy removes the knife from each of his sleeves, and pulls the one from his waist. He turns to return to your side, frowning when you brush by him.

His eyes widen when he sees you produce your own knife, setting it down on the tray beside his. You pull out another two knives from underneath the skirt of your dress. Then another one from your sleeve. His mouth parts slightly.

He’s not sure if he should be amused, impressed, or afraid - especially when he recognises the knives as pieces from his own collection.

“Where…?”

“You really shouldn’t leave these lying around the house,” you remark, a small smirk tugging at the corner of your lips. His own lips curl into a small grin.

“I’ll keep that in mind.”

When he hears you breathe out a small laugh, Billy’s heart soars at the sound.

“Is there anything important I should know before we go in there?” you ask, eyeing the doors with uncertainty.

Billy takes your hand again, and he sees some of the tension leave your shoulders.

“I’ll try and do the majority of the talking, though they’ll prefer it from you.” You nod, only having a brief idea of what the Dark Elves social rules are.

Billy’s thumb traces over your fingers as you make your way through the entrance hall. He gives you the directions and you’re soon in the company of a group of Dark Elves. You glance back at Billy, and he steps closer to you, placing a reassuring hand at the base of your spine.

You shake hands with a large number of random dignitaries, before Billy introduces you to the Chancellor and the Sovereignia. The two of them regard you with dignified restraint, and you can tell immediately that neither of them like you.

Luckily, the small talk doesn’t last long, and soon you’re taking your seat for dinner. You have been placed next to the Chancellor, meaning that you’re opposite Billy. The General sits beside Billy and at the end of the table the Sovereignia keeps her eye on you.

As the food is served Billy observes your face, which has gone almost impressively blank, but he can see the suppressed horror in your eyes. As your gaze flickers up to meet his, your eyes narrow slightly at the sight of the amusement glittering in his eyes. A thrill runs through him. No one has ever been able to read him like you can, even after only a few days of knowing him.

He bites down on his lower lip to suppress his laughter at your reaction to the dishes in front of you.

“You seem surprised, are they not to your liking?” the Sovereignia asks you with faux concern. As you glance over at her, you’re aware that everyone is watching your interaction.

“Not at all, my lady. It’s truly an impressive spread.” You swallow hard, gesturing towards what looks like a very large, very live snake. It’s scales are unlike anything you’ve ever seen, they look almost pure black. The middle of its body is pinned to the silver platter, preventing it from escaping. “Is that…?”

“The umbranguis?”

“Yes, the umbranguis.” You nod, certain you’ve just butchered the name completely. “Is it still alive?”

She grins.

“Why of course. How do humans prefer such a delicacy?”

We don’t? you think to yourself, though you don’t believe that would be a suitable response.

“We usually kill it before serving,” you lie in a light voice, hoping she believes you.

Billy looks down at his plate, unable to watch your expression in fear that he’ll start laughing.

“Surely that takes all the fun out of it,” she remarks, selecting a very large knife before she stands.

Leaning over the table, she tilts the knife sideways before slicing the creature’s head off with one forceful motion. You can feel the blood leave your face, and you hope it isn’t too noticeable.

You pick at your food, finding that you enjoy very little of it, whilst you and Billy suffer through an extensive number of questions from a variety of different dignitaries. Though the Chancellor, and Sovereignia in particular, appear to enjoy questioning the appeal of Billy.

“And the scars don’t bother you?” the Sovereignia asks with a raised brow. Stunned, your mouth parts at her audacity, and you answer without a moment’s thought.

“No,” you say, turning your fork over in your hand to distract yourself from reacting too strongly, but your voice is firm as you add, “They don’t.”

She hums, leaning back in her chair as she sips from her goblet.

“It’s a shame. He had such a pretty face.” You place your fork down carefully, straightening as you link your fingers together and prop your chin against them.

“I think he suits them.”

There’s a glint in her eyes, a smirk curling at her lips as you meet her stare unflinchingly. The two of you hold each other’s gaze for a long moment, and a few dignitaries shift uncomfortably.

Billy is in absolute awe of you.

Meanwhile, you’re utterly terrified. But you’re not backing down. For some reason, you feel strangely protective of Billy, and you don’t like the looks that the Sovereignia keeps sending his way.

Her smirk twists into a near vicious grin.

“Well, aren’t you two a perfect match.”

She sets her goblet down, and you decide to drop your gaze respectfully. You’re certain she would be a very powerful enemy, who would delight in making your life a living hell. Then she says,

“When is the happy occasion?”

Both you and Billy share a look of relief.

The door behind you opens and Billy steps out onto the balcony. You had retreated out to escape the near endless flood of questions about your supposed wedding.

Billy’s hands are tucked behind his back, and he’s practically beaming at you. You can’t help but smile back at him, despite your narrowed eyes.

“Why are you smiling?”

“Only because I’m the best husband ever.”

Trying to ignore the way your heart skips a beat in response to his words, you concentrate on what he has in his hands.

He steps closer to you, placing a small cloth bundle on the stone wall that encloses the balcony. The bundle opens, revealing a tiny feast of berries, cheese, and bread. Your mouth waters at the sight, and you realise how little you had eaten at the dinner.

“Oh God. You’re an angel!” you gasp, picking up a handful of berries. Billy’s heart warms at the compliment, and the sight of you tucking into the food so eagerly. “How did you know what I’d like?”

“The Sovereignia’s servants are all human, so I asked them.”

The delighted expression on your face softens and your smile turns almost shy.

“Thank you Billy.”

His smile widens.

“You’re welcome.”

Billy’s demeanour shifts slightly, and he steps closer to you, pressing his body against your back and curling an arm around your waist.

“What are you doing?”

“The Chancellor’s watching us.”

“Oh,” you say softly, relaxing in his hold immediately.

Resting your head against his chest, you glance up at Billy to find him already staring down at you. The two of you stare into each other’s eyes for a long moment, before your gaze flickers down to his lips. As your mouth parts, you’re suddenly aware of how good his body feels pressed firmly against yours. You shift in his arms, turning to nearly face him.

“Billy,” you breathe out softly.

“Yes, little treasure?”

You melt at the nickname, and feel a rush of longing for his lips against yours.

“Nothing,” you say, turning your head away from him.

Over the past few days you’ve resisted him, despite the magnetic pull you feel to always be at his side. His head dips down, and you feel his nose nuzzling against your pulse point. You’re certain he can feel your heart pounding. His lips trace feather light kisses over your skin, and you shiver in his arms.

“Don’t fight your instincts,” he murmurs gently. “I know you want me, just as much as I want you.”

Eyes widened, you turn back to face him.

“You want me?”

“Was the marriage proposal not enough?” he teases.

“I thought that was just an opportunity for you.”

“It still is,” he agrees softly. “But after tonight, can you really blame me?”

You shake your head. You hated how everyone had treated Billy. His eyes drop down to stare at your body appreciatively, and warmth blooms under your skin.

“But yes, of course I want you. What’s not to want?” He purrs the question and your eyes flutter closed as you squeeze your thighs together. Billy is hyper aware of your every move.

You lean closer, your breathing already ragged with need as you whisper against his lips,

“I want you too.”

His mouth is on yours, and you grip tightly to the front of his shirt. Your whines and moans are muffled against his lips, but the sound of them has a shiver running down Billy’s spine. Your lips are so soft against his, and he can taste the berries, and the wine from earlier.

Billy stiffens suddenly and you frown as he pulls away.

“How much have you had to drink?”

“Only three glasses. I’m not drunk Billy.”

“Humans have a much lower tolerance than elves,” he reasons. “And our alcohol is quite different from yours.” You nuzzle your nose against his throat, feeling intoxicated by his scent. “So, whilst you might not feel drunk, everything feels really good right now, doesn’t it treasure?”

His voice is so soft, you could listen to him talk to you like this forever. His hands drift down your sides, and he’s right, it feels so good. A small moan gets caught in your throat, you want him so badly it nearly hurts not to have his hands over your bare skin.

“It also takes a while for it to hit your system.”

He cups your face in his hand, and you let out a small hum at the contact. His thumb circles over your cheek tenderly, his cool fingers against your flushed skin.

“So, you’re not even feeling the full effects yet.”

You whine quietly, rocking your hips against his, and he breathes in sharply, biting down hard on his lip.

“Such sweet noises,” he says in a whisper as his lips capture yours again.

“Please Billy,” you plead when he pulls away.

He kisses you once again.

“You’re drunk, little treasure. I’m not taking advantage of that,” he states firmly.

“But you’re kissing me.”

“Kissing can be innocent. The things I want to do to you… are far from innocent.” You swallow hard, your dizzy mind running wild with thoughts of Billy.

“Please Billy, I need you.”

“No you don’t, little treasure.”

“I do.”

You whine in protest, and he sighs,

“If you still need me in the morning, then you can have me. But I doubt you’ll even remember this conversation.”

A pout puckers at your lips, and Billy is tempted to kiss you again as you argue,

“I will.”

He chuckles softly, pressing a kiss to your forehead which seems to pacify your increasing need for physical contact.

“We’ll see about that. Now let’s get you home.”

I’m about half way through writing the next part, so in the meantime here’s a little snippet:

In the Dark - Part 3

“Do you need anything?” He asks softly, and the question might be innocent but the only responses you can think of are far from innocent. You shake your head, your eyes closed.

“No.” You answer in a quiet voice.

“No?” He repeats, sliding closer to you to drape an arm around your waist. You bite your lip, and Billy can see the conflict on your face. “You don’t need anything?” You shake your head. He hums in thought, not believing you for a second. He pulls you closer, until you can feel his body against yours, and you force yourself not to whine with need. “You know you can ask for anything you want.” He says softly, his lips brushing delicately against the skin of your throat.

He looks up at you, his head tilted aside.

“Do you remember last night?” He asks, and you bite your lip as you hesitate. You do remember last night, but he’s currently giving you an out. Your mind drifts back to being in his arms, his lips against yours, and you come to a decision. You nod your head, and he grins. “Have you changed your mind?”

“No.” You say softly.

His nails aren’t long, but at the right angle they’re sharp. He traces a line down your spine with his finger, tilting his nail to catch against your skin, and he’s shocked at the needy whine that escapes your throat. His eyes darken to near pitch black, and his smile widens into something wicked.

“Does my little treasure like some pain with her pleasure?”
