WTW Ghost Gala - Days 11 - 16
↳ [Day 11] Bats: How would your wip change if a minor character became the protagonist?
Honestly...not that much. What would happen is that the focus of the wip's events would shift to include scenes, events, and plot elements that the current main characters would never know or see. Leda or Sola as protagonists, for example, would showcase more espionage and take a deeper look into their relationships from before the start of the story. Characters like Ambrosius would shift the genre into more romance/tragedy and allow for Charles to have more screentime from the very first book.
But the actual progression of the King's Game and Fenice's fight for the throne wouldn't change significantly in terms of who wins, loses, lives, or dies.
Unless, of course, the protagonists end up being Charles, Isandros, or Aretos. In any other story, they'd be the natural protagonists. Unfortunately, they're in this one.
↳ [Day 12] Candles: After naming all your characters: tell us the meaning behind their names
Yeah, the names in WCTD are a mix of purposefully chosen names, names I picked out of a database without looking into meanings, and names I just made up, so this was...hard.
Let's get started with the only 2 characters whose name I deliberately chose:
Fenice (Italian) - Phoenix (what a shocker, I know)
Carolus/Charles (Latin/German) - Free man
And then the characters whose names I just picked at random:
Isandros (Greek) - Like a man
Leda (Greek) - possibly "Happy/Gladly"? Couldn't find a proper source. Mother of Helen of Troy, Clytemnestra, Castor, and Pollux.
Ambrosius (Latin) - From the greek Ambrosios, meaning "immortal, divine." (hahaha)
Euphemia (Greek) - Well-Spoken
Basil (Greek) - derived from the word Basileus meaning "King"
Konstantine (Latin) - "constant, steadfast."
Nikephoros (Greek) - "carrying victory"
And last but not least, characters whose I just made up
Illysandre -Lady of Illyosa
Meidira - Creation's gift
Eliskander - Defender of Men
Kaelstansa - He who stands ahead
↳ [Day 13] Coffin: Where's your favorite place to write?
I don't really have much of a favorite. I just like writing in places that are relatively quiet and my back is to a wall so I'm not paranoid that people are looking over my shoulder
↳ [Day 14] Haunted Mansion: Describe a setting in your wip
The Imperial Palace in Kaelstanopoli-- often called the Khrysopalati-- is the seat of Aetierian governance and the home of the vi Aetiers."It's a sprawling series of pavilions and gardens, set upon a gently sloping hill that overlooked [Kaelstanopoli] the city proper. In the middle of the palace was the octagonal shape of the Great Hall. It glinted gold in the sunlight, each wall-face masterfully embellished with jeweled mosaics telling legends of the Empire's first ruler."
"It was grand, ostentatious, and decadent in its display of wealth. The perfect nest for the pit of vipers that made up the Aetierian imperial court."
↳ [Day 15] Black Cat: Flesh out your antagonist: Who are they? What are they? What do they want?
Aretos vi Aetier. The ghost of a child long thought dead. Or at least, that's what he's been told he is. He is his mother's son, her legacy, and her vengeance. What exists beyond those truths can be easily twisted to suit his needs. He has as many faces as the thousand-faced god himself, and he'll use whatever is at is disposal to accomplish his goals.
↳ [Day 16] Pumpkin Spice Latte
Yeah...I'm just gonna use the one from my wip intro
FENICE VI AETIER, a portent of ill omens and the estranged daughter of the Vasilier, ignites a dangerous succession game between her and her half-siblings, where losing means death and winning means an empire.
The end of the Hes-Aei war brings with it a chance to prove her worth to her father. The challenge is simple: bring him the head of the deposed king of Hesperia, and Fenice will be granted an Ascension, marking her as a legitimate contender for the throne. But finding the defeated king in his own lands would prove to be harder than Fenice imagined— especially when the remnants of her father’s last war starts rearing its head.

In a nation that considers itself peaceful and civilized, the case for military action should be overwhelmingly stronger than the case against. It must face, and survive, aggressive questioning.
Dan Froomkin at Press Watch. “Complicit enablers”: 20 years later, the press corps has learned nothing
I am a fan of Dan Froomkin's writing on journalism. I saved this link because I've wanted to address the anniversary of The Invasion of Iraq. I have felt sadness and shame. This piece captures a a crucial part of the public support for the war. And provide constructive criticism for journalism. Change is needed, but I share  his concerns that it difficult to imagine change is on the horizon.
I am not a particularly knowledgeable about the big events of my lifetime. Knowing that, I keep quiet about suspicions I harbor. I do try not to magnify mistrust for myself and others. But that doesn't make dark suspicions go away. So the revelation by Ben Barnes that he worked with John Connally to convince Iran to refrain from  releasing hostages held from the seizure of the American Embassy in Tehran during the revolution while Carter was President. The goal was to aid in the Election of Ronald Reagan.
Reagan's treachery ranks with Richard Nixon's sabotage of the 1968 Vietnam War peace talks. In both instances the outlines of the conspiracies were known, but strongly and repeatedly denied by  the principals as well as the establishment press. We continue to experience repercussions from the history of the Reagan administration policies in the Greater Middle East areto this day.
A decade after Reagan's election committee's sabotage, a respected Iran scholar, Gary Sick wrote about "The October Surprise." In 1992 a House Task Force was instituted to investigate. Basically the task force found there was no "there" there.
In 1986 a US Senate subcommittee on Terrorism, Narcotics, and International Operations headed by John Kerry examined drug trafficking and the Nicaraguan Contras. There is some meat in the report. A year later joint hearings between the House Select Committee and the Senate Select Committee on Secret Military Assistance to Iran and the Nicaraguan Opposition were held.
There is a feeling that twenty years after the Iraq War "nobody cares." As I say, I am no expert, but I not so sure that's right. I rememeber that lots of people cared about the sabotage of Peace Talks. Lots of people cared about the American hostages in Iran. Lots of people cared about the drugs and gun running implicit in Iran Contra. There was great skepticism about the first Invasion of Iraq. Giant public demonstrations against the second show there was less unanimity that we're told. Many have cared and still care.
"Complicit enablers" applies not just to the Press. What the trope "nobody cares" obscures is how  consent is manufactured.

when comes the dawn ; the vi drochona dynasty
the imperial family ; the vi Aetiers
Since the founding of the Aetierian Empire by Kaelstansa the Great, officially there has only ever been one family, one dynasty, the ruled over Aetier. Those bearing the surname vi Aetier (literally meaning "of Aetier") have since then become synonymous with the empire, and the empire synonymous with the imperial family. That does not mean however that there were not sub-dynasties within the empire. Families who, by their own good fortune and the ill fortune of others, found themselves seated on the Phoenix throne with the right to take the vi Aetier names for themselves.
ascendance of the drochonan dynasty ;
When Emperor Alexios V died of an illness and left no blood heirs to assume his throne, the short-lived and tragic Arkadian dynasy came to an end. Ascending the phoenix throne in its place are the vi Drochonas—first cousins once removed—whose reigns are as bloody as they are prosperous.
Below is a partial list of all known members of the Drochonan dynasty since Empress Saphynia's coronation.
/ SAPHYNIA I “THE IRON QUEEN’
The younger of the vi Drochona twins and the one who assumed the crown upon her coming of age at eighteen. Her reign saw the end of the Cal-Aei war and the expansion of the Aetierian Empire, brining victory to the empire after almost half a century of gruelling losses. Her sexuality gained her the criticism of her advisors and the nobility, as her adamant refusal to take a male consort sprung up questions of heirs. A problem easily remedied when she adopted her brother’s son.
/ KAREO “THE INDOLENT”
The elder of the vi Drochona twins and the duke of Rubello, the seat of the vi Drochonans. He famously refused to the crown in favor of his twin sister citing that the crown was ‘too much work’ and would drive him to an early grave. This did not stop him, however, from being one of Empress Saphynia’s most trusted advisors and he had even ruled as regent for long stretches of time in his sister’s absence.
/ KARLEON III
Kareo’s son and Saphynia’s appointed heir. His reigns saw relative prosperity, though it is during his time that Aetier declined its expansion eastward towards the Taulan Plains. Their efforts stymied by the rising power of the Iskaavar and the threat of the unification of the numerous Taulan tribes. He is most known for his numerous children and was killed by his fifth son, Dantalion I.
/ AREIONA
The first child of Karleon III and his first wife Empress Meidira of Aranthia. She was praised for her brilliance in numerous subjects such as history, science, theology, literature, and military tactics. She was named reilma-imperessa but perished from an undisclosed illness, though there are rumors that foul play was involved.
/ ARETOS
The second child of Karleon III with consort Silvia. The blood-sibling of Astaria vi Aetier. He was confirmed as the next reilma-imperessor a decade after Areiona’s death and was the first of Karleon’s children to die in the King’s Game.
/ ASTARIA
The third child of Karleon III with consort Silvia. The blood-sibling of Astaria vi Aetier. She was Dantalion’s main contender for the crown, with their feud lasting six years as she fought for her crown and revenge for her family. She died at the Siege of Konstantinye, marking the end of the King’s Game. Astaria only had one child, though it is rumored to have died during the Siege.
/ DANTALION I “THE GREAT”
The fifth child of Karleon III with consort Ruona. The blood-sibling of Andras vi Aetier. He was Astaria’s main contender for the crown. He was sent as a political hostage to the Iskavaar atthe age of 10 and would not see his homeland for more than seven years. He distinguished himself in the military with the reclamation of the Islands of Cer and his nigh prodigious control of arcana. He is known by many epithets, including “Areia-blessed” “favri deori” “the Lionheart” and most famously “the Kinslayer” for the assassination of his father and his many siblings.
/ ANDRAS
The seventh child of Karleon III with consort Ruona. The blood-sibling of Dantalion vi Aetier and the current Duke of Rubello. He is the only one of Dantalion’s siblings (sans those who married into other kingdoms) that survived the King’s Games. He helped Dantalion secure strategic victories during the King’s Games and often acted as his brother’s representative in gaining supporters.
/ FENICE
The first child of Dantalion I with his first wife, the once-empress Titania of Taul. What was supposed to be the herald of a new age and a source of stability for his reign turned into an ill omen. Adeadborne, she grew up far from the eyes of court in the dukedom of Isidore.
/ CHARLES
The second child of Dantalion I with his second wife the consort-premier Illysandre vi Soresi. Beloved amongst many, he is expected to take up his father’s mantle as the next emperor of Aetier. He is known as the gentlest of the vi Aetiers.

I am having quite a bit of trouble finding decent speeds for a very small business office in the downtown Los Angeles area. The only two options I have areTo get a decade old service through ATT of 6down/??up at $40/month plus installation and fees under a one year contractPay roughly $22,000 to get Spectrum cable dredged and hooked up from one block away to get 200/10 for 84.99/monthI run a business which relies on sending 10 -100 files daily quickly and to many different recipients that range from 500mb to 1.5gb. This is a thoroughly modern business that relies on the speed of the modern internet to function properly.Has anyone in DTLA been able to find ways to either fund the installation fees for such a project or found other services that are not extremely costly to set up? I am in need of help fast, if its out there.

Months after seeing Thanatos for what he believes to be the last time, a sour note interrupts Ares' dreams of a fonder time.
Or: Ares misses his boyfriend and receives a premonition of Thanatos calling out to him from Sisyphus's dungeon.
A redraw of a comic that I originally drew in 2016, then redrew in 2018.
