OMG. Ok. OK! First of all sorry for taking forever- this ask made me so happy and I wanted to make sure to do it justice. This was in reply to sth I reblogged about what character you love from an obscure show that not enough people talk about. My reply was Abigail Armstrong from the Australian kids show Dance Academy (2010-2013). So *deep breath*…

First of all Dance Academy is so incredibly joyful. It’s about a group of teens who are chosen to attend a prestigious ballet school in Sydney. I’d say it skews slightly younger than say Gossip Girl or Elite, is more realistic/less scandalous than those shows and makes you feel warm and happy (except for that one storyline that’ll rip your heart out and leave you sobbing on the ground- IYKYK). The actors are a lot better than in most shows targeted at young teens, you get to see a lot of ballet, which is always good, and the characters are well-rounded and grow throughout the show. Which brings me to…

Abigail Armstrong, played by Dena Kaplan. Abigail starts the show as the antagonist to wide-eyed newbie Tara, the protagonist (and least interesting character IMO). Abigail is the quintessential mean girl: arrogant, snippy, wants to be the best at all costs- kind of a bitch. But it doesn’t take long for her to open up and begin to make friends w the main group. We learn about the sacrifices she’s had to make to get to where she is, and how she’s struggling because her body isn’t as naturally thin and ballet-dancer-like as Tara’s, for example. In short, she’s exactly the type of character I love on every show I watch 😅 Abigail is also witty, a beautifully expressive dancer, and one half of the show‘s sweetest relationship once she starts falling for her pas-de-deux partner Sammy. She’s mean to him at first because his dancing isn’t up to her standards, then he slowly warms her heart- it’s the best. Abigail is a really interesting character and Dena does a great job revealing all her layers over time. I just really, really love Abigail and I wish more people I know watched Dance Academy! All the episodes are on YouTube and Netflix (at least in Germany), so what are you waiting for?

Bonus: Today Dena teaches dance classes in various Australian cities, is a DJ and openly talks about her struggles with mental health and prescription medication on Instagram in an effort to destigmatize the conversation around mental health. She seems really cool. Most recently she had a supporting role in the romcom Long story short, which I highly recommend!

Dance Academy will always have my respect for casting an Asian actor as the love interest and a South African actress as the mean girl when they could’ve cast a white person.

Abigail could’ve easily been a blonde white girl but they didn’t go that way. (Ngl though, the promo pictures made it look like Kat was the mean girl haha.)

And especially after seeing the ways media desexualises Asian men, seeing Jordan as the bad boy/male lead/love interest made me so happy!! 

Dena and Jordan slayed their roles too. That is why films and shows need to give POC more opportunities. They can do just as well as white actors.
