Moe The Cult of the Child
This was an article written by Jason Thompson on the subject of moe and pedophilic manga about single men caring for female children. Reposting part of the article because it’s seemingly been wiped from the web and is now only available on archival sites:
https://web.archive.org/web/20140811010814/https://pulllist.comixology.com/articles/265/Moe-The-Cult-of-the-Child
The word moe actually comes from a kanji meaning “to sprout.” “My vegetable love should grow,” to misuse a quote from Andrew Marvell—a slow budding affection, like a tender young plant.
Or like an underage girl, unfortunately. The moe which makes me periodically ashamed to read manga in public, and which has caused a raging debate in the Otaku USA letter column, is a particular kind of moe which has its roots in the Japanese love of cuteness, domesticity and—one element among many—the lingering lolicon trend. It’s the moe of stories like Azumanga Daioh and Strawberry Marshmallow and Tori Koro and Yotsuba&!, in which adorable girls do adorable things.
Going a step further, it’s the moe of stories like Kanna and Tsukuyomi: Moon Phase and Hinadori Girl and Blood Alone, in which adorable girls do adorable things while living in questionable situations with adult men. And if I went just another step further, it’d be the moe of Nymphet, in which adorable girls sexually tease adult men, but that manga crossed the line and got everybody offended and was never translated (Seven Seas Entertainment canceled it in 2007 after a chain of negative reactions to the announcement), even though, frankly, it’s probably more honest about its intentions than some of the other titles I just mentioned.
Yes, the web of moe is like a complex mesh stretching from almost totally innocent titles like Azumanga Daioh, in which the reader gets to peep at the chaste world of girls, to yuri (lesbian) stories aimed at men (Strawberry Panic being one of the most pandering examples), to open lolicon fantasies. Of course, in pure moe, there’s never sex, just as in bishonen beautiful-boy manga (as opposed to true Boy’s Love) the characters just bicker suggestively and never actually rip each other’s clothes off and get down to it. In fact, it is often so sweet and gentle, like Azumanga, that it can be enjoyed at face value as a children’s manga—even though Dengeki Daioh, the magazine in which Azumanga ran, is aimed at teenage through twentysomething men. Blatant sexuality would destroy the illusion of innocence that is part of the moe appeal.
But still, in Tsukuyomi Moon Phase for instance, it’s just assumed that there will be sexual tension between college-age Kouhei and Hazuki, who looks like a 10-year-old girl. “You better not touch her,” his relatives warn. If my relatives felt they had to tell me this, I’d either (a) get new relatives or (b) take a long hard look at my life. Even in Yotsuba&!, in which an adorable green-haired girl lives in the care of Koiwai, a cheerful twentysomething slacker, couldn’t Koiwai have actually been Yotsuba’s real father? Does he have to be her mysterious, vague adoptive father? Is the idea of Koiwai actually having sex with an adult woman and producing Yotsuba really that much of a wet blanket on the story?
Not gonna quote the blatant pedophile apologism from Scott Von Schilling, click the original link if you want to read that. If moe crap really was about fatherly love why are most moe girls so sexualized, and why do moe fans buy things like fuckpillows of their “daughters”? Yotsuba is an exception as it seemingly doesn’t have that sort of fanbase, but most moe series do. Why don’t hetero male moe fans want a little boy to take care of? It always has to be a girl they can molest.
The desire to nurture and the sex drive are all too easily combined, as anyone who’s studied child abuse knows. Stu-Hiro’s untranslated manga Otaku no Musume-san (“Otaku’s Daughter”) confronts this dilemma a little more bluntly than other manga of its type. The protagonist, Kouta, is a 26-year-old nerd who is suddenly reunited with his 9-year-old daughter Kanau, the spawn of a single sexual encounter in high school. At first eager to meet her dad, Kanau is appalled to discover that her father is a doll-collecting pervert and porn manga author (actually one of his more positive traits – at least he’s working) whose apartment is full of body pillows and art of little girls in panties.
Kouta (who, we eventually learn, turned to the dark path of the otaku because he still pines for his lost high school love) at least has the good sense to be embarrassed, and tries to clean up his act, at least in front of her. (“Once you enter this world you start forgetting what things are like in the real world…since you’re living here now I’ll have to be more careful from now on. Sorry.”) So Kanau ends up being raised in an environment full of borderline pedophilic imagery, without the suggestion of actual abuse taking place.
Not sure if Thompson is praising Otaku no Musume-san, if so he shouldn’t because it’s a very revolting manga.
The most disturbing element of Otaku no Musume-san, perhaps, is that Kouta’s nine-year-old daughter cooks dinner for him. Even with the explicitly sexual element removed, moe is a fantasy of girlhood seen through chauvinistic male eyes. It’s a fantasy of returning to the nursery—to the state of pampered childhood that so many real girls find stifling, but which to a young adult male with an emotionally stunted life and no job prospects, might seem like a retreat into paradise.
Even when moe girls are “competent,” like 10-year-old cook/laundrywoman/ dishwasher Sasami in Tenchi Muyo!, these little girls represent house and home and the most stereotypical view of womanhood—little mothers who cook and clean and aren’t as scary as real adult women. It’s no surprise that one of the manga formats which has embraced moe is four-panel manga, which, like traditional American comic strips, trades on a similar set of clichés: reassuring domestic situations, the warmth of family, and cute characters who never grow old.
Thompson goes on to call the sentencing of a man who was convicted for drawn childporn tragic, not gonna quote that bit of pedophilia apologism. The guy was convicted for straight up lolicon hentai and not something like a skeevy bathing scene in an otherwise normal manga. His conviction is only tragic if you believe drawn childporn should be legal.
My review of Azumanga Daioh in Manga: The Complete Guide, in which I gave the series 3.5 stars but mentioned some readers might be turned off by the “vaguely pedophilic teacher,” sparked a debate on the talk page for Azumanga Daioh’s wikipedia article. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Talk:Azumanga_Daioh#Kimura.27s_.27obsession.27
Creepy how defensive these Azumanga fanboys got over the completely accurate statement that the teacher in the series is a pedophile and the manga makes light of it.
He ends the article with:
It was a civil debate, but whenever people use the word “ephebophile,” I have to think they’re splitting hairs. When I say “pedophile,” I don’t want to hang a lightning rod over the house of anime and manga, but I do feel that it is the only word to describe this aspect of moe.

Dengeki B’s Log 2015 Nightshade Chojiro Story Translation
Salutations.... I seriously hate how there are no translations for this fandom T_T lol. going to rectify that now.
Edit: I managed to find the publication info for this so I’ve adjusted the post accordingly.
As this is the first thing i've translated for Nightshade... I am going to state that I DO NOT and CANNOT read/understand Japanese and that my translations are all done from Chinese into English with my not-exactly great Chinese reading skills so whatever I translate might not be entirely accurate since I also rely on mtl help. That means I have to find someone else's translations for content in Chinese before doing anything and am severely limited in what I can translate... which in this case is 5 things counting this story.
Anyway, I chose to translate this Nightshade story first... because I am super biased for Chojiro lol (i will do hanzo’s next... whenever the hell that is since I’m swamped with Hakuoki stuff). This story was published in the 2015 October Dengeki B's Log magazine (though it might also have been originally posted at the following link though it no longer works: http://www.bs-log.com/sp/otomebu/hyakka/ss03.html )... it should be the magazine where this post's scans were from (https://kiminosekaisoshitewatashinosekai.tumblr.com//post/131722446050/requested-百花百狼-戦国忍法帖-scan-from-bs-log-please).
I use square brackets for my translation notes. Also do not repost elsewhere.
Tumblr media
Kinda did this on a whim. Enjoy....!

Dengeki B’s Log 2015 Nightshade Chojiro Story Translation “Respite from the Rain”
Translation by KumoriYami
"That hurts——"
Even if it was to take a single step, Enju was incapable of enduring the pain in her ankle. If she forced herself to walk the swelling would only get worse. As she started to wonder about what to do next, Enju heard the sound of tree leaves rustling.
"It's raining......."
Her mood was gloomy. Even if she wanted to go back to the village before becoming drenched, that wouldn't be possible. Originally she wanted to train and slipped away from her guard, Gekkomaru, but she had accidentally twisted her ankle.  She let out a sigh, bending over to sit under the shade of a tree, and it felt that the rain was coming down harder now as she looked up towards the sky.
"Nii-sama."
Enju didn't know when her master, Chojiro, started standing beside her, [and] she hadn't been able to detect his breathing at all.
"Is your foot in pain?" "It just twisted a bit, I was trying to head back to the village——"
Chojiro pressed down on Enju's shoulders, who was barely standing up [perhaps trying to stand up given that she sat down], and asked her to sit back down. He then tore off a part of his clothes, and tightly wrapped Enju's ankle with it.
"Ah......!" "Sorry, I wasn't able to control my strength." "N, no, it's alright."
Chojiro always used weapons that required strength to wield, thus he found it difficult to grasp his own strength.
"......Does it hurt?" "No but...... I should be the one apologizing, you just returned from a mission right?"
Because Chojiro had gone out on a mission, Enju was alone and training hard. Perhaps he anticipated her doing so, that as soon as he finished his mission, he came to check on the status of his disciples.
"That doesn't matter. You're not with Gekkomaru?" "Gekkomaru——he would immediately ask if I got hurt, got tired or worried, so I sent him away." "Is that so? It's not hard to imagine your guard's expression."
Enju heard him let out a soft sigh. Chojiro was almost always expressionless, and while she couldn't be certain that he hadn't laughed, the atmosphere around them however became calm.
"It's beginning to let up, for now we wait." "Yes."
Their conversation stopped after that, and the two of them did not say a word while under the shade of the tree. As master and disciple, Chojiro and Enju spent a lot of time together, but it wasn't for the sake of talking. Most of that time was for training, and even if he spoke, he would only be saying "you should be training more to get stronger," and "you should be working hard on improving your ninjitsu." Not only that, even though the two of them were together in the same place because of the rain now, Enju couldn't think of a subject to a talk about with him.
"Um...... where did you go for your mission this time?" "Wakasa." Wakasa...... that's quite far. "It's not that far...... but it isn't close."
The topic came to a close again. Although it wasn't difficult for them to talk to one another, Chojiro found it difficult to engage in subjects unrelated to ninjitsu and training. As a shinobi, perhaps that was as it should be. Enju believed he was that sort of person, which proved that he was an excellent ninja.
"......I'd love to go out earlier." "To Wakasa?" "No, on a mission."
Chojiro received an unexpected response. He looked into the distance and started to contemplate. Chojiro was usually on a mission and not at the village, and in comparison, Enju still hasn't gone on her first mission. To complete a mission for the sake of the village...... it could be said that sentence was Enju's mantra.
".......If you keep twisting your ankle while training, that will not be possible." "That's true......"
To actually forget about her current condition, Enju felt ashamed, [but] Chojiro was indifferent as he looked towards he sky. As the black clouds started drifting eastward, the sight of the blue sky slowly became more visible.
"The sky's [starting to] clear up. Let's return." "Okay...... Ah!"
Enju wanted to stand up with Chojiro, but the pain in her ankle made her groan. Chojiro who turned and saw her reaction, contemplated for a short moment before he suddenly lifted Enju into his arms.
"Nii-sama!?" "Curl your body up. That way you won't get wet from the rain." "B-But...... I'm quite heavy......" "How could you be heavy."
Before Chojiro's astonishing arm strength, Enju could say nothing, and had no choice but to do as he said. He must have thought that if she was carried on his back, she would have gotten soaked. Enju was very pleased by the the level of attention shown by Chojiro who always had a cold and detached expression, and it made her feel very happy.
End
---------
*sigh*
I can seriously swear that it’s not cuz Chojiro’s VA is the same as Saito’s from Hakuoki that I romanced Chojiro first.
It’s just that I just really have a thing for characters who are quiet, loyal, duty-first, angsty, unable to to figure out their own feelings or put themselves first and are conflicted when it comes to actually feeling... and characters who would do anything for the sake of their significant other....
lol. that’s probably why Snake-Eyes form G.I. Joe, Solas and Fenris from Dragon Age and Batman are some of my all-time favourite characters.... also Quiet from MGSV TPP.

So... a package from Japan arrived a little over a week ago--around Oct 19--but I’ve been so busy I’m only now getting to share it on Tumblr. There are six items in total. Starting with the poster, then moving counter-clockwise:
A poster for the Baccano! NDS game (bigger than expected).
『バッカーノ! 1931 時刻表 The Grand Punk Railroad』 aka “Baccano! 1931 Timetable The Grand Punk Railroad,” aka 90 pages of a choose-your-own-story branch type of novella which was a reservation privilege for those who reserved the NDS game in advance.
Baccano! mousepad--one of the few pieces of official anime merch out there (I assume this one is real because who would want to create a knockoff version of this?? Where’s the demand??)
Dengeki HP Vol 48 (Jun 2007) edition: Contains four pages on the upcoming Baccano! anime and Vol 11, as well as Shijin’s manga.
Dengeki April Fool (April 2007 edition): Has a Durarara!! story entertaining a “What if Shizuo and Izaya were friends” scenario, and a Baccano! story which I think asks the question of what resides in Chané’s heart as set on April 1, 193X. Neither story is canon, I believe (obv not Drrr!! one)--at least, I don’t think Chané’s is related to the main story?
Dengeki BUNKOYOMI 2006: Has drawings for every month of the year. The August section has both a Durarara!! x Etsusa Bridge!! spread by Yasuda w/a bit of dialogue, as well as the Baccano! x Vamp! spread by Enami w/a bit of dialogue. Didn’t include photo of the latter above because people have likely seen the B! x V spread already--though the dialogue perhaps not, so I might take photos of the dialogue later.
More details about the items under the cut.
Starting with Paragraph 1, you wake up at 10 AM on December 31, 1931 in anticipation for a certain passenger’s (?) arrival on the Flying Pussyfoot train scheduled to arrive in two hours’ time. Paragraph 1 gives you two paths to choose from; you flip to whatever paragraph number you picked, and so on.
From what I understand so far, the reader will encounter familiar characters along the way (Graham, Maria, potentially Maiza and Ronny) but also DS characters like Nancy Lute + the Lute sisters (it seems Maria might be friends with them?)...a guy called Darius... (in one of the pages to which I flipped, I saw something about Darius wanting to marry one of Bartolo’s daughters...or was it a daughter of one of Bartolo’s nephews??) Anyway, it was a big shock to see this up for auction; glad I got it.
A Baccano! mousepad that was one of the few pieces of merchandise Baccano! ever got (you can see it on the official website’s goods page). I don’t have any reason to think this is a fake, because honestly Baccano! merch has never been in high enough demand to warrant knock-offs. This one has a crack in it, but the crack can be hidden.
Dengeki HP Vol 48 (June 2007) edition, which didn’t have as much Narita content as I’d hoped; it had four pages on the upcoming anime (Jul 2007) broadcast as well as Shijin’s manga and the upcoming Vol 11 release, which I took quick photos of above. To my surprise, though, the magazine did happen to contain one of Narita’s Hariyama-san short stories--I assume this one ended up in Vol 3, since its illustrations were of the bamboo girl.
The 2007 Dengeki April Fool magazine, which is saturated with far more lewd art than I wanted to see or wanted to own, dammit Japan. The seller did mention it in the product description in retrospect but I didn’t truly comprehend the extent... Dammit, Dengeki.
The magazine contains April Fool content by various authors for their series, and this one has both a two-page Drrr!! story and a two-page Baccano! story. The Durarara!! story I think entertains a “what-if” scenario along the lines of “What if Shizuo and Izaya were friends?” while the Baccano! one is Chané-related...something about ‘what resides in the heart of a girl who gave up her voice for her father’, I think?
Looks like it starts off in the year 193X, on April 1st; I think I see the year 1564 mentioned on the second page, and the date April 1, 1928... I guess the story is discussing the history of April Fools’ Day? For a hot second I was excited by the year 1564 (shame), then I saw the katakana for France...after looking it up, I think Narita is likely discussing one theory wherein: some areas in France celebrated New Years’ Day in a holiday which ended on April 1, and January 1 was only officially adopted as the date in 1564 via the Edict of Roussillon.
Not sure what this has to do with Chané’s heart yet, but oh well.
Dengeki BUNKOYOMI 2006 edition, which featured a Durarara!! x Etsusa Bridge double-page spread drawn by Yasuda for the August section as well as the Baccano! x Vamp! double spread by Enami that Baccano! fans likely have already seen (which is why I didn’t include a photo of it like I did the Drrr!!xEB one). Then again the B/V crossover spread does have a couple dialogue lines like Yasuda’s image, and I don’t know if those have been seen/translated yet; maybe I’ll share the dialogue at a later point?
I think there’s a special Boogiepop-related essay or interview or something in this edition; at the very least the Boogiepop illustration has an accompanying few pages of text. I remember a Boogiepop fan contacted me about one of the magazines I bought before; maybe they’d be interested in this one?

Hitting 100 translations
I started working on translations for this fandom back in April 2018 and I’m already very close to hitting 100 translations. Currently a total of 92 translations were counted (including what I happened to posted on other accounts, but excluding tweets translations)
Since this is a special occasion, I’ll be taking up a translation request for my 100th translation! I did something similar back in December but as a Christmas thing. All you have to do is basically look over the list below and send me an ask (it can be anonymous too, but don’t cheat by sending more asks that way) with what you’d like me to translate. The winning request will be translated.
Of course, I might not cover all the things I have for tsukiuta/tsukipro, so you’re free to send me requests that don’t appear on the list. But if by any chance I don’t have it, I will let you know so you can change your request. You can send me requests until I hit my 99th translation.
Since the list might be long, I’ll put a read more. And sorry if somehow I put by mistake titles there that were translated (if I find any, I’ll remove them from the list)

Awww… the July 2018 issue of Dengeki Girl’s Style is the last print version of the magazine. Dengeki Girl’s Style magazine will be completely digital from now on.
But the images on their online version are usually low quality and watermarked... Hope they will change that. Well, guess I'll be able to save a bit of money each month then as only have to get B's Log each month then. It's the only other otome gaming mag I regularly get. As for the rest, it depends on the cover, pin-ups/posters & furoku that comes with them.

Enstars: Dengeki Girl’s Style March 2017
[UPDATE 20/4/17] added links to Enstage ~Take your marks~ DVD/BD on Animate International
Released in February 2017.
Many thanks to Nhi for the scans!! She just finished translating Athletics event story. Check out her translations on Dreamwidth!
Switch decorates the cover of this issue, which also includes B2-sized poster of the cover illustration as a bonus (Yuri!!! on Ice on the other side). The magazine’s Valentine’s day special compiles sweets-themed cards from past events and gacha. There are also previews of recent events and gacha. I translated an interview with Kuro and Nazuna’s voice actors before they went live on Monthly Ensemble Studio in December 2016 (where all Knight Killers voice actors were present). Finally, I also summarized Ensemble Stars! on Stage ~Take your marks!~ Report (ie a summary of a summary).
Translations after the jump!
Monthly Ensemble Studio:
A direct interview with Kuro and Nazuna’s voice actors, Shin’ichiro Kamio and Yuki Yonai right before recording! (25 December 2016) This interview was also published in B’s-Log March 2017, released in January 2017.
How did you feel when you knew you’re participating as guests?
Kamio: Before, I participated in the public recording at KYOMAF [1], but that was an event, so there was a limit to the broadcasting time. I thought one day I wanted to participate in something where I don’t have to mind about the time as much. And I’m really grateful seeing it realized in 2016. Other than that, I’m so happy that everyone from Knight Killers is here!
Yonai: As for me, I’m the first guest from Ra*bits, so I’m bearing that responsibility. Also, Nazuna and Kuro are the top two most sensible people among the third years, so…
Kamio: In 3-B, we’re the only ones with conscience, aren’t we.
Yonai: Exactly! Today, I’m just hoping the two of us will be able to keep the king and the emperor in check. I’m looking forward to it.
Kamio: I think we’ll be alright? (Laugh)
Yonai: I don’t think so, though. (Laugh)
Today is Christmas. If you were to give Asanuma-san and Midorikawa-san presents, what would they be?
Yonai: I want to give Asanuma-san a planetarium. He writes scripts and the like, so I thought it would be nice if inspiration can well up while he looks at the planetarium.
Kamio: Then we’ll have Yonai-kun purchase a planetarium from the countryside for him.
Yonai: What? You mean the entire building?!
Kamio: Yeah. It’ll be so expensive here in the city, so we’ll get you to either buy the planetarium in the suburbs, or maybe renovate Asanuma-san’s home in secret (laugh).
Yonai: (Laugh) Then, for Midorikawa-san it would be tea…?
Kamio: Midorikawa-san can gulp down bitter tea with ease saying it’s delicious, so if that’s the case, we can probably get him coffee? Civet cat coffee (Luwak coffee), how about that? I want to give him something a bit unusual.
Yonai: As a surprise, huh?
Kamio: Yeah, that’s it. Other than that, if it’s something that suits him, I want to give him a whole field of flowers.
Yonai: Aah, I know what you mean!
Kamio: Purchase it from the countryside, alright? We can get it from my hometown, Hokkaido somewhere…maybe? (laugh)
Please tell us your Christmas memories!
Yonai: My birthday is on the 23rd of December, so it’s pretty much lumped together with Christmas. But yesterday, I participated in my agency’s reading theater, and all the performers and the audience celebrated my birthday. It was my first time experiencing the joy of celebrating it with everyone, and I was happy I got a job on Christmas Eve. I made a really wonderful memory.
Kamio: For me, spending Christmas with my family is the most memorable memory I have. I have older and younger sisters, and all three of us were born in January. So we would order cakes from the same shop on Christmas and three times in January.
Yonai: At home, we also prepare cakes for my birthday and Christmas separately.
Kamio: Kids won’t like it if their birthdays are lumped together with other things, huh (laugh).
Are there any characters you want them to be in the same unit as Kuro or Nazuna?
Kamio: I want to create the unit “The Tall Guyz”. Rei, Wataru, Adonis… also Midori. If you gather all the tall boys, Midori will be the only first-year, so I thought I wanted to see his troubled look (laugh).
Yonai: I want to make a unit with third-years who don’t call Nazuna “Nii-chan”. Like Kanata or Izumi. I want him to act together with those who are portrayed to be getting along with him.
What about excluding Kuro and Nazuna?
Kamio: Sakuma brothers and Aoi brothers, a brothers&brothers unit, maybe. Also, I want to see more temporary units. The first-years team up a lot, but I’d like the third years too. Please! (laugh)
Yonai: As for me, I want to see how it’ll turn out if the two from Valkyrie team up with different people.
Lastly, please give a message to all the fans out there!
Yonai: Soon, it’ll be two years since the game was released. The number of transfer students and idols are increasing little by little, and I feel this student life has become vibrant. I believe they will reveal more about every character’s charms, past, and relationships with other characters, so please look forward to it.
Kamio: I second the guy next to me (laugh). Everything about Enstars is dear to me, and I myself also find the game to be enjoyable, so I hope everyone can find their own way to enjoy and play it.
Yonai: I agree. We’re really having fun as transfer students ourselves, so let’s move forward from the same line of view!
Kamio: By the way, today’s the last day of the event! (laugh)
--(t/n)--
1. Monthly Ensemble Studio in September 2016 was held in Kyoto Animation and Manga Fair, a public event held in Kyoto. Voice actors of Leo, Mika, Sora, and Kuro (Shintaro Asanuma, Jun Oosuka, Kazutomi Yamamoto, and Kamio) made an appearance.
Ensemble Stars! on Stage ~Take your marks!~ Report
(Paraphrased) The plot was introduced by members of Ryuseitai, the first to appear on the stage. Right after Trickstar’s victory over Akatsuki, Eichi the student council president came back. Fine members showed their prowess and “publicly executed” UNDEAD. Trickstar, on the verge of disbanding, started to grow apart because of their different views. They sang an original song to express that, Wish upon a Stars. In other scenes, other units sang their unit songs. UNDEAD sang DESTRUCTION ROAD with “powerful dance moves”, Akatsuki sang Weaving Memories “utilising Japanese traditional umbrellas”, and 2wink sang Heart Prism Symmetry with “amazing synchronization”. In curtain call, the whole cast sang Singin’☆Shine! along with the audience.
There was also an event to promote Enstage BD/DVD release, and there was a talk segment with the stage actors. Apparently, without fail, before every performance they would do a group hug and shake hands with everyone. They would look at each other in the eye and motivate each other. But since Akira, Adonis’ actor wore thick foundation, everyone instead just gave him gentle pats on the back.
The second Enstage BD/DVD will be released on the 25th of May 2017. Pre-order at Animate (BD/DVD)/Animate International (BD/DVD) includes bonus of 2 bromides chosen at random. Early bird pre-order before 31st of March (oops D:) will give you special BD/DVD cover jacket with 6 different designs available, each design for each unit.

Hakuoki Short Story: Saito-san’s Days of Practice
First translation posts of the month (1 of 2 for translations +1 update [that one will not be tagged with hakuoki]), so please support me if you can either on ko-fi (https://ko-fi.com/V7V2W0HO) or through paypal (paypal.me/KumoriYami )…. also let me know if you have any hakuoki drama cds that you’d be willing to share that are on my looking for list since i don’t have the audio for those…..
In regards to this translation, I honestly don’t know where this short story came from, but I’ve assumed that it showed up in one of the Dengeki or B-log magazines as they, in the past, have had other various Hakuoki short stories in them....I think? If anyone has information in regards to this,  I’d appreciate it to put that down here....
Aside from Saito’s story, I’ve only been able to find Chinese translations for Souji and Heisuke for these (don’t have a timeline on those right now, cuz holy shit these feel extreeeemely long. seriously!).... and have no intention of looking for the others at the moment (i gave up after more than an hour). If anyone does happen to find the others in Chinese... feel free to send them my way since I will add those to my list of torturous translations (i don’t wanna update my lookout list rn + plus I don’t want to add these to that list without knowing where these come from).
Anyway, this story is told from Chizuru’s point of view, also the image is not mine.
Enjoy~<3

Hakuoki Short Story - Saito-san’s Days of Practice
Translation by KumoriYami
The silence of the temple was disturbed by the sound of Saito-san slicing the air with a wooden sword. He repeated his movements smoothly, from top to bottom, [then] from left to right.
During this quiet morning, after hearing the sound of sword practice in the temple as I was heading to the kitchen to prepare breakfast, I couldn't help but stop.
"Ah......Saito-san?"
“Yukimura, today you woke up early? Are you going to prepare breakfast?”
"Yes, Saito-san, you are also up early."
Before my arrival, Saito-san had been practising for a while, [and] his cheeks were sweaty. I handed him the handkerchief I had with me to him, tilting my head as I asked:
“Why are you practising so early? What's the matter? [alt: Is there anything going on/something wrong?]”
“Yes, I was thinking about something.”
“Thinking about something?”
“A few days ago, vice-commander asked me to train some of the new recruits..... but I don't know what training arrangements should be made.
Saito-san frowned slightly and continued to speak.
From his words, it sounded as if the new warriors who joined [the Shinsengumi] had good swordsmanship.
“Sword skills can be ordinarily improved through normal training, but mental capabilities are different to improve, [and/but I] don't know of any good methods to improve them.”
"A good method...."
Early morning birds chirping echoed in my ears, I looked over the Nishi Honwanji temple courtyard together with Saito-san thinking of his concerns.
After thinking for a moment, I clasped my hands together and spoke:  "Ah, I have heard that the monks of Nishi Honwanji usually sit in meditation to improve their minds.
"Indeed, meditation can really improve/hone a person's mind. However, merely siting in meditation does not seem adequate,  and something else must be done."
------------
Regardless of if it's plants [says trees] or animals, all living things will hide themselves until spring as it was winter
The wind blowing off the river wasn't just cold, but painful.  Just breathing made my throat feel frozen.
——Even so, today Saito-san was only wearing a single strip of cloth [fundoshi... probably?], tightly holding his arm(s) [probably: tightly crossing his arms], quietly looking down towards the torrential waterfall before us.
"Sai-saito-san, you truly want to sit underneath  that waterfall?
Yes, since ancient times to the present, when it comes to mediation, it's best to use a waterfall.
"But, the weather is so cold, you might die accidentally...."
If there is no risk to one's life, then it will not be training.
Saito-san nodded seriously, then went towards the cold river. The moment his toe touched the water, Saito-san shook violently. I was absolutely not imagining it.
Saito-san continued his movements, obviously stiffly because of the cold.
I worriedly called out to him:
"Saito-san, d-don't do this....."
"It's okay, do not worry."
"But......"
"Do not worry."
Saito-san whispered to himself, then showed no hesitation as he put one foot into the water.
He used his frozen legs to wade through the river and after, moved underneath the waterfall without hesitation.
"If, if only one's mind [thinks it] is cold, [then] even fire can be [thought of as] cold...... [the tl i saw had the word “cold” in place of where I put in “fire”, and the 2nd 'cold’ that I wrote as “fire/hot,” so I switched these around]
Saito-san endured waterfall falling down on his head, softly/gently [slowly] closing his eyes.
「……」
“No, no [don't do this] Saito-san! Now that you've meditated, hurry up and get out, or you really will catch a cold."
「……」
"......Saito-san?"
「……」
"Saito-san? Saito-san——" ------------
"Therefore/as a result/so, in order to improve one's willpower/mind, not only meditation, but also doing that beneath a waterfall [will help]?
"That....the last part is too dangerous..."
"It was only because the water was so cool and comfortable, that I almost fell asleep.”
Almost froze to death—— though that could not be said, I was once again made aware of the present.
"Now that it is no longer winter, it is now longer possible to ind a cold waterfall."
"Yes. other methods to practice need to be thought of."
What other ways were there? We fell into deep contemplation again.
The time, the first who thought [of something] was Saito-san.
"It would better to go into the mountains to live in seclusion, this is also [a] basic [form of] training."
------------
Through the roof made/built of tree leaves and branches, the familiar sunlight,  only the sound of birds from the quiet mountain roads/paths, shrouded [the area] with a tranquil/quiet atmosphere.
[Alt (since my ^ tl for this was more literal):  The sunlight passing through the roof made of tree leaves and branches and the sound of birds chirping on the mountain paths created a tranquil atmosphere.][also im guessing they built a shelter?]
[We have] Been living in seclusion in the mountains for [a few] days [now].
Saito-san and I were living(/surviving) in the mountains by picking wild vegetables, and fishing to eat.
"......[I] Really didn't think/expect that it would be so quiet."
"Yes..... Saito-san, is this also a form of practise/training?
"In a sense, there is no type of training stricter/more rigourous than this, than/with just the two of us living secluded in the mountains."
"Eh?"
I couldn't help but make a sound as I looked at Saito-san, however I didn't understand why he looked away.
Then while not looking at me, whispered.
"I mean, there is nothing here, I don't know if you're bored being together with me......"
"There is no such problem, I like being together with Saito-san."
"Is, is that so? That's good... Well, actually, me being together with you also...." [alt: being together with you, I also...]
Just now [he] said——
Saito-san's voice was muffled by another noise, [one] that suddenly [started] coming from the rustling of the nearby bushes.
The sounds coming from the bushes got louder and louder, until finally, it turned into the low roar of a wild beast.
I immediately assumed a defensive position, [and] at this moment, I saw a giant beast with sharp claws appear.
"Sai-saito-san, there's a bear! Quick, run away/get out of here!"
I hurriedly pulled at Saito-san's sleeves, trying to pull him so that we could escape together, but I don't know why he wanted to continue what he was saying to me, and did not move.
「……」
It absolutely wasn't because of fear that he refused to budge.  Because he was glaring straight at the bear with a terrible look.
"Yukimura, retreat."
"Are-are you going to fight it? You might not be a bear's opponent...."
"Encountering these type of circumstances should be avoided, [alt?: Coming across /having such an opportunity  is rare,/This situation was supposed to be a retreat/ I was supposed to be getting away from these types of situations,] but I am suddenly, no, I am very angry."
[^ if you can’t tell, i had looots of difficulties with the first half of this, lol. so I just put down all my interpretations... though I'd assume it's probably more  along the lines of: Having such an opportunity (with you) is rare, so I am suddenly...]
Saito-san looked straight at the bear with a sharp gaze and put his left hand on his katana's hilt, emitting killing intent/a murderous aura, as if the bear was a punching bag.
"Living in seclusion in the wilderness requires fighting a bear——Prepare to die, bear." [may say: To live  (in seclusion) in the mountain wilderness is to fight a bear/means fighting a bear]
------------
".....Well, we can discuss about how else to hone/improve one's mind/willpower. Will it/should it need to involve fighting bears?
Ordinary humans should not be able to defeat bears, but Saito-san is not without the possibility of winning. With these types of  thoughts, I lowered my head.
"Disregarding minor details, we cannot be away from headquarters for long, [and] living in seclusion in the mountains is not realistic.”
"Yes, to hone your mind/will, you shouldn't need to go living in seclusion in the mountains."
Once again, our thoughts were disrupted, [and] we sighed, together looking towards the sky again.
"[This is] Really difficult. Is there an effective training method that doesn't require [a lot of] time?"
Thinking about this general idea, I thought:
"Nn.....what about fasting? A few days ago, Heisuke-kun, Harada-san, [and] Nagakura-san didn't eat anything for the entire day, [and were] so hungry that they cried."
"Fasting? This sounds worthwhile, though I do not know its effectiveness."
After hearing this, I suddenly remembered,  this talk about eating——
"Ah, that's right! I need to go make breakfast!"
“Sorry, I have kept you for so long. What is for breakfast today?"
"Turnip soup, [and] Kyoto-styled cooked vegetables [lit: Kyoto cooked vegetables]. Although it's yesterday's leftovers, the taste is very rich and is very delicious."
Ghrgh....
Saito-san responded to what I said with his stomach, which sounded like the stomach of a hungry animal.
"........It appears that my training is insufficient, [and that] I must correct what I said as fasting appears to be an effective form of practice/training."
Saito-san turned his head and blushed because of his stomach's gurgling.
I responded with a smile and looked away.
"Breakfast will be ready soon, please wait a moment."
"Today I'll help you cook, as thanks to you for speaking with me."
"Ah......okay, I'll be troubling you Saito-san!"
Saito-san spoke as he quickly walked forward, and I hurried to catch up.
the end
--------
The title of this might actually be Day of Practice instead of plural days... but I left it at days since I think it made more sense.... Unfortunately, identifying if something is either singular or plural in Chinese isn’t the easiest thing to do unless there’s more context.... and titles certainly lack that. Nouns without context... it’s like they’re all like the word ‘moose’ (only English comparison I can think of off the top of my head atm...). It’s both singular and plural and without further information, it’s impossible to figure out if one moose is being talked about or multiple moose....
^I only wrote this blurb cuz i spent a good 5 min pondering about what the title should be lol. Using day sounds better, and I’m kinda particular about how the way things both look and sound, but days did make more sense.....
^^i’m kinda feeling random rn... and i’ve probably had too much sugar just now. tired too. also i don’t have a habit of writing translation notes like this nor do i really intend to do so notes like this again in the future... though perhaps again when im felt like i’ve had too much sugar? lol w/e...
>_<
nother post will be up shortly. tsukikage countdown.
