#depp heard trial
Text
in 10 years, people are gonna look back at this depp-heard trial, realize how awful the misogyny surrounding it was, and say, “we behaved horribly.” yeah, leave me and others out of that ‘we’, because a bunch of us have been warning about how awful the disinformation is and how harmful it is for survivors to see. but ofc, any reasonable takes are drowned out by ridiculous things like a viral tweet of amber blowing her nose which has been framed as her ‘snorting coke in court’. you people have been behaving like demons and i can’t wait for your asses to realize how stupid some of you acted.

i find it so fucking fascinating (read: horrifying) how the heard/depp case is being spun into the exact same "the wokelib mainstream media is lying to you" rhetoric that the alt-right uses, that QAnon uses, and somehow this newest group falling for it doesn't see the warning signs. obviously there are plenty people amongst the deppfenders who were already on the conspiracy right, but this whole ordeal seems to have turned into a big fat recruitment tool. if the only news outlets you "can trust" are fox and the daily wire, well that's a problem isn't it?
media criticism is good and necessary especially in the united states, but just separating it into "outlets who agree with me" and "outlets who don't" is myopic and proves bad analysis. yes, the media lies and distorts and covers up, quite frequently in fact, but there are clear trends you can observe (such as more reactionary, conservative or status quo ideas being pushed), and when outlets who have been especially guilty of proven distortion and outright lies (like fox) are being presented to you as "the good ones", that should give you pause. like, a lot of pause.
what we desperately need is better media literacy, the ability to critically evaluate information and intent, the ability to distinguish good from bad science, know when a source isn't reliable, the ability to research and, barring that, the ability to identify the journalists and outlets who do good research. what we got, unfortunately, is the idea that if your in-group believes something, that thing must be true.
and i'm pointing the finger at all of you here too because you constantly fall for that shit and while it's usually about comparably harmless things, it has lead to harassment campaigns in the past. you need to learn how to read sources and do research, or you need to stop sharing hearsay as facts. this is exactly the kind of disinformation culture that has been fostered on tiktok to radicalized teens into mass supporting an abuser and mocking his victim. what is the next step in the funnel towards conspiratorial belief and reactionary talking points?
"oh but people of all walks of life believe this, not just right-wing weirdos" yeah, well, the wellness and new age movements were overwhelmingly not full of right-wingers and now look how many have become QAnon.

Remember all the self-proclaimed activists and feminists who refused to comment on the Depp/Heard trial? Those who always said „Educate yourself if you don’t know anything or not enough about a topic!“ Those who always demanded to speak up if you experienced some sort of injustice.
They refused to comment on this because they wouldn’t allow themselves to think that a woman might be an abuser spreading lies. They couldn’t admit that yes, there are actually women who abuse other people (and in this particular case, men) mentally and physically. They just closed their ears and eyes and pretended that this wasn’t real. That it didn’t happen. Although the entire world witnessed it (fortunately). They are such pathetic hypocrites and I can’t take them seriously anymore.

A must read from a former JD supporter. ( For the record: I also fell for this crap once upon a time, so I get it. If you don’t do the research, it’s very easy to believe JD and his team—even when it makes no logical sense. )

i know celebrity bs is beneath you. i know. but if you can't see how watching an abuse survivor get dragged back to court by her abuser over and over again while the entire internet makes a fucking mockery of her is going to do irreparable damage to women's rights and to survivors of abuse then you're a fucking idiot.

I’ve been trying to write up a post explaining the misinformation storm around the Heard and Depp case but thankfully Michael Hobbes stepped in and did it far better than I ever could. Please give it a read especially if you think Depp’s win was justice. You’re being manipulated and while this might not change your mind, I hope it will at least make you see why people are so upset regarding this outcome.

i think the worst thing about the depp verdict is seeing people i know on social media come out and celebrate it. these aren’t regular randos either, these are close friends, these are people i respect, these are people who call themselves feminists. it makes me feel like these people who i respect and love won’t ever believe me if i ever find myself in a violent situation. so just make note of that before you go spam likes on depp’s post.

Johnny Depp winning this trial against defamation is NOT villainizing every women who ever spoke out against domestic and/or sexual abuse. I watched the live streams. I am a feminist. Women can be abusers and men can be victims too. Amber Heard not only lied under oath several times, but also admitted on audio tapes of hitting him and showing psychological disorders in evidences and during the live trial. MEN CAN BE VICTIMS TOO. And this "celebrity case" showed that it is even harder for men to be believed as survivors of abuse than women. The outcome of this case however does not and more importantly should not mean that women shouldn't speak out about their own personal experiences of abuse and violence. It is always important for the TRUTH to come out. The outcome of this trial is not a throwback for the #Metoo movement.

To this day, I’m still affected by the JD AH case. I think maybe it’s the media I watch, but it keeps coming up.
There are recordings where Amber admits to hitting Johny, and making light of it because it “wasn’t a proper punch”, and the whole relationship is Johny “splitting” running away whilst Amber chases after him, upset when he leaves. How she had 10 (or was it 11?) months with 7 million dollars to donate to charity and didn’t, and lies to say she did. How she got caught in lie after lie. Admits to hitting him, to starting fights, cheats on him, takes embarrassing pictures of him. She laughs at him in recordings and belittles him. This is all proved as evidence in court. She got arrested for abusing her ex.
And JD wins this case. That legally, the jury found that he did not abuse her. And yet, people continue to see her as the victim and not the abuser. They read the horrible (like nasty, disgusting) texts that he sent to his mates about her, and the fact he did drugs (like she did) and drunk too much alcohol (like she did) and decide he’s the abuser.
It makes me sad, because she’s the abuser and she has made it harder for victims to come out. She’s hurt Johny (and her ex according to the police report) and continues to hurt the cases of all victims coming forward. People will see her lies and will question victims more and worry that they will lie like she did. It’s hard because I believed her. I truly did. I was furious at JD because I believed he abused her. But then I watched the court case, and obviously now I see how she abused him. And how she’s continuing to try to abuse him.
Anyway, just needed to get this out into words because it’s been months since she was found to have defamed him by lying about him abusing her, and it’s still so emotional to me.

I love how Heard's lawyer was like "There's no way for you to prove that he never hit her." Like what do you want???? 24/7 cameras???? A live feed of his life? He doesn't have to prove he didn't you have to prove he did. That's how innocent til proven guilty works!!!!!
Like... I just... I cant

Okay so while Johnny Depp won the trial, Amber Heard technically lost, but I just got a Twitter notif, and it was a post from a woman who claims she's studying domestic abuse and provides a lot of evidence on how Amber Heard actually was abused and Johnny Depp wasn't yet people believe Johnny Depp because he was like, Jack Sparrow or something. I don't know what to believe anymore. I feel like this is going to destroy the future trust of people who know others who have or will be abused and there is nothing we can do about it

“Even if my US appeal is successful, the best outcome would be a re-trial where a new jury would have to consider the evidence again. I simply cannot go through that for a third time.”
"I cannot afford to risk an impossible bill – one that is not just financial, but also psychological, physical and emotional. Women shouldn’t have to face abuse or bankruptcy for speaking her truth, but unfortunately, it is not uncommon.”
Amber has chosen to settle the defamation case. 💔
