A Lake Born out of an Earthquake
At their most deadly and destructive, earthquakes can topple buildings, crumple roads, and trigger tsunamis. They can also fundamentally reshape the landscape, reroute rivers, and even form new lakes.
The latter took place in the northwest corner of Tennessee in the early 19th century. Between December 1811 and February 1812, three earthquakes with magnitudes greater than 7 occurred in the New Madrid seismic zone, which encompasses southeastern Missouri, northeastern Arkansas, and neighboring parts of Tennessee and Kentucky. The last of these quakes, on February 7, 1812, centered near New Madrid, Missouri, was especially notable: It temporarily rerouted the Mississippi River, permanently dammed the Reelfoot River, and directed water to fill in a low-lying area to form Reelfoot Lake.
More than two centuries later, Reelfoot Lake remains a persistent feature on the Tennessee landscape. The OLI-2 (Operational Land Imager-2) on Landsat 9 captured this image of the lake, surrounding wetlands, and the nearby Mississippi River on November 27, 2023.
Rivers that run over fault lines are susceptible to being stopped abruptly and wrenched askew when the ground shifts. Earthquake-induced river avulsions, or sudden changes of course, have been documented throughout history. In 2016, for example, the Kaikōura earthquake in New Zealand effectively dammed the Waiau Toa (Clarence River) and forced it into an entirely new channel.
In the case of the earthquake that formed Reelfoot Lake, lore has it that the shaking even made the Mississippi flow in reverse for a time; however, that may have been an illusion from earthquake-generated water waves traveling upriver. The shaking virtually destroyed the small Missouri town of New Madrid. Eyewitnesses near the epicenter also described trees being uprooted and the ground rising, falling, and cracking open. People in distant cities such as Boston, Detroit, and New Orleans reported to have felt the shaking.
Some geologists consider the New Madrid seismic zone the most hazardous earthquake region east of the Rocky Mountains. Yet its history of large quakes and risk of future destructive activity remain sources of inquiry and debate. Geologists understand less about what causes earthquakes in the middle of tectonic plates than they do about ones at plate boundaries. What they do know is that seismic waves in the eastern U.S. travel much farther than they do in the west, so tremors of the same magnitude affect a larger area.
The Reelfoot Lake of today is a haven for boating, fishing, and watching wildlife. Bald cypress (Taxodium distichum) trees grow in marshy areas, while stumps from pre-flood forests are submerged in the water. The lake is surrounded by wetlands that comprise a state park and national wildlife refuge. Bald eagles and waterfowl overwinter in the area, while songbirds, frogs, and other aquatic life abound in the spring and summer.

The right way to Make Your Product Stand Out With New York City
It is a commuter ferry, (runs each 30 minutesall day, and as soon as an hour midnight to 5 AM), so it's less crowded before and after rush hours. Jennings’ filings show no expense for any meals that day, though did pay $350 for “fundraising,” probably for a catered event. He claimed mentioned research present illegal sports activities betting generates greater than $a hundred billion nationally. My mates and that i tried to snag May tickets to The Tonight Present Starring Jimmy Fallon, following all instructions listed in their web site and Twitter account; however after only eight minutes of being on the web queue for Might show passes, we had been knowledgeable that all tickets have been bought out. Scoring low cost Broadway tickets is feasible all due to TKTS, with 3 ticket sales space areas in Brooklyn and Manhattan. Buying advance tickets Hello! Nonetheless, this food courtroom is really nice, reminiscent of the food courts one finds in enclosed buying malls. Overshadowed by a food fight over $83.5 million in tax breaks and grants for Contemporary Direct at the Harlem River Rail Yards, the smaller bundle requires Manhattan Beer to spend $60 million on land, renovations and equipment.
youtube
CEO Simon Bergson said the mission will permit the firm to develop without leaving the Bronx, the place it arrange shop in 1979. Manhattan Beer is at present primarily based on Walnut Ave. in Port Morris. For travellers looking for memorable New York City souvenirs, the MoMA can be an amazing place to shop. This 4-minute video compilation shows union officials throughout 2008 saying, and testifying to the New York City Council on the record concerning, an settlement that requires a residing wage provision to be included in the Request for Proposals seeking developer firms to implement the Willets Level development. Jennings, who did not return telephone calls looking for comment, is barred from receiving taxpayer matching funds within the four-way southeast Queens Council race because he has not repaid his $45,000 debt. It plans to shift routes from Brooklyn to Queens and the Bronx. Jennings has also regularly held “meetings” at gas stations from Queens to New Jersey, racking up fees as excessive as $seventy five for a single one. On Might 9, for instance, Jennings tipped a waiter named Pasquale Gattuso $100. Signed by Mayor Bloomberg on Could 26, 2009, this legislation requires the town to create a technique with the general objectives to conserve, protect, improve, stabilize, restore, and broaden wetlands and related buffer areas in town.
Below a plan supported by Mayor Michael Bloomberg, USDA brokers killed 1,509 wild geese in parks all through New York City and 167 extra in Lengthy Island in 2010. Last yr, 575 geese have been killed. Mayor Michael Bloomberg mentioned the U.S. In the past, geese have been eliminated by being rounded up, stuffed into crates and gassed to dying by agents with the U.S. Geese are nesting right now, said Birnkrant, so it’s both adult geese and goslings that might be killed underneath Gillibrand's plan. For the previous two years now, the USDA has culled geese within a seven-mile radius of John F. Kennedy and LaGuardia airports. Phillip Broyles states that the FBI was dismantled over 10 years ago. As an illustration, over 5 years of historical past, there were more than 100,000 circumstances of rides above 300 kilometers. Over the last 12 months, the commission added about 60 enforcement brokers, bringing its whole to over 150. In 2011, 1,737 automobiles have been seized, in accordance with the commission. After finalizing its merger with Northwest Airways in 2010, Delta inherited hubs at Minneapolis (MSP) and Detroit (DTW) and upgraded its presence in Boston (SEA) in 2019 bringing its complete hub count to nine. A moment later he said he had upgraded us to a suite.
When it first opened, Macy's was a reducing-edge store with 33 elevators and 4 picket escalators (the first US store to make the most of them). It occupies approximately 14 sq. kilometers and has nine terminals, four runways, and 132 gates. For the rides in bigger autos - sometimes indicating extra passengers and/or more luggage - travelers took nine additional minutes to be on their approach, for both home and international flights. Queens: Superb for travelers on a finances. It's my understanding that you can not use a tripod in NYC with out a permit. This draft strategy advances the City’s understanding of the quantity and ownership of these vulnerable wetlands and proposes methods that may enhance protection. Specifically, taxi jfk to nyc and this draft wetlands technique deal with the question of how to raised protect small weak wetlands parcels. When the E is operating specific, it doesn’t take that lengthy, but when the E is operating local or has service points it may well appear like it takes perpetually. Take a look at the web site www.buffalorising.com- Buffalo will suprise you. Worth will likely be roughly the identical as two Uber XL's, possibly even a bit much less.

Detroit River International Wildlife Refuge in Michigan was established in 2001 as a result of efforts from politicians, conservation leaders and local communities in America and Canada to build a sustainable future for the Detroit River and western Lake Erie ecosystems. Because of this collaboration, international status was given to the refuge - making it the first of its kind in North America. The refuge consists of nearly 6,000 acres of unique habitat, including islands, coastal wetlands, marshes, shoals and waterfront lands. Gorgeous sunrise above the refuge by Tom Kachelmeyer, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.

Michigan in confrontation with Alberta’s Line 5 pipeline, and other significant Great Lakes oil pipeline shenanigans, June 2020: Enbridge struggles to begin their $500-million pipeline expansion under the Straits of Mackinac, a project originally scheduled to begin this year; pollution regulators in Minnesota also cause Enbridge to “miss prime construction season” for a $2.6-billion Line 3 pipeline expansion in Minnesota; Enbridge pays US EPA a $6.7-million fine over Line 5 oil pipeline neglect in Michigan; and, less than a week after the fine payment, more pipeline malfunctions are discovered beneath the Straits of Mackinac and Michigan’s attorney general asks judge for a restraining order against Enbridge, requesting the “permanent closure” of Line 5.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Enbridge’s (based in Calgary) Line 3 pipeline carries oil and natural gas from Alberta’s tar sands, through northern Minnesota, before reaching Duluth-Superior, from where Enbridge’s Line 5 pipeline then carries the fossil fuel from Duluth to Sarnia (Ontario, just north of Detroit), which requires Line 5 to cross through Michigan and Straits of Mackinac, before the fuel’s eventual export through Atlantic Canada. There is significant community and legal resistance against Line 3 in Minnesota. And, for months, Michigan’s governor and attorney general have been trying to overturn legislation enabling expansion of Line 5 originally passed by the (Republican-controlled) state legislature and earlier approved by previous governor, Snyder (of Flint-poisoning infamy). Enbridge has been trying to publicize and begin their $500-million expansion/reconstruction of the Line 5 pipeline portion beneath the waves of the Straits.

A little history on Enbridge’s Line 5, their $6.7-million fine, and their relationship with Michigan:
Tumblr media
Enbridge said Thursday that the Alberta, Canada-based company has settled with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and agreed to pay the fines, levied in May. Regulators alleged that Enbridge violated a 2017 consent decree. Among other things, the EPA said Enbridge neglected to properly evaluate thousands of “shallow dents” on its Lakehead Pipeline System, which runs through both of Michigan's peninsulas and includes an underwater stretch of twin pipelines through the Straits of Mackinac. [...]
More than 1.1 million gallons of oil spilled from a rupture in Enbridge's 30-inch transmission pipeline near Marshall beginning July 25, 2010. The spill devastated Talmadge Creek and surrounding wetlands and fouled about 38 miles of the Kalamazoo River. Thinners in the thick, sludgy, diluted bitumen evaporated, causing significant amounts of the oil to sink to the river bottom, clump with sediments and other materials, and complicate the cleanup. Enbridge officials did not discover or address the ongoing oil spill for 17 hours. It was discovered only after being reported by a third party who came upon the spreading environmental disaster along Talmadge Creek.
Enbridge's Line 5 moves 23 million gallons of oil and natural gas liquids per day east through the Upper Peninsula, splitting into twin underwater pipelines through the Straits, before returning to a single transmission pipeline through the Lower Peninsula that runs south to Sarnia, Ontario. Many have expressed concern about the aging pipes over several years, noting that a pipeline disaster in the Straits  such as the one that occurred in Marshall would devastate the Great Lakes, shoreline and island communities, and the state economy. Enbridge officials have steadfastly maintained the pipes are safe.

So:
4 June 2020: “Minnesota pollution regulators make decision that will delay $2.6B Enbridge pipeline project” pending a contested case hearing on necessary water permits, to be held in summer 2020.
11 June 2020: The Michigan Court of Appeals upheld the Michigan state legislature’s older pipeline-expansion legislation and sided with Enbridge.
18 June 2020: Then, Enbridge announces they have paid a $6.7-million fine to the EPA because Enbridge “violated” a consent decree from 2017 by neglecting “thousands” of dangerous dents in the Line 3 pipeline in the wetlands of northern Minnesota.
23 June 2020: After further underwater infrastructure was found to be malfunctioning in the Straits of Mackinac, Michigan’s attorney general requests a judge to enforce permanent closure of Line 5.

Great Lakes Moment: River otters return to western Lake Erie
Most people know river otters from zoos or YouTube videos as endearing playful creatures that can put a smile on anyone’s face.
The river otter, once common throughout much of North America, was first reduced by trapping and then displaced from many areas by loss of habitat from urbanization and pollution. But sightings along western Lake Erie at Ottawa National Wildlife Refuge in Ohio and Point Pelee National Park in Leamington, Ontario, and evidence of a return of river otter to Toronto Harbour, raise the prospects that they just might return one day to the Detroit River too.
The river otter makes its home near the water. They live in a den by the edge of a lake, stream, or marsh. One fun fact is that River Otters don’t dig their own dens, they either use a natural hollow or burrow made by another animal. Otter dens feature numerous tunnels with easy access to water, especially for night hunting for fish, amphibians, crayfish and other aquatic delicacies. They can even close their nostrils to keep water out during long dives and stay underwater for up to 8 minutes.
Tumblr media
Trail cam photo of a river otter from the Toronto and region watershed. (Photo credit: Toronto Region Conservation Authority).
Historically, river otters were present throughout most of North America, including southeast Michigan and southwest Ontario. One Monroe County, Michigan, creek is even named Otter Creek, a testament to how common they were during the late 1700s. However, that all changed during the Fur Trade Era when river otters were harvested in large numbers for their valuable water-resistant pelts. While hunting and trapping reduced otter numbers in Michigan, Ontario and Ohio, urbanization and water pollution proved to be the final blows. By the early 1900s these semi-aquatic mammals were gone.
In 1986, the Ohio Department of Natural Resources began a 7-year project to reintroduce river otters to areas with clean water and abundant food supply. More than 100 River Otters were captured in Arkansas and Louisiana, where they were still common, and transported to eastern Ohio. They were then released in the Grand River (a tributary of the central basin of Lake Erie) and Killbuck Creek, Little Muskingum River and Stillwater Creek, which flow into rivers that are part of the Mississippi River watershed.
By all accounts the river otter has not only survived but thrived in these watersheds. Monitoring has shown slow but steady growth of the population, and in 2002 it was even removed from Ohio’s list of state endangered species. But as the river otter population grew, individual otters began to adventure out to new watersheds – what scientists call expanding their range.
Some of the adventurous otters have now found a home in western Ohio. River otter sightings have occurred annually for more than 10 years from Cedar Point south to Darby, Ohio, near Columbus. Along the southern shore of western Lake Erie, not only have they been seen in Cedar Point, but Ottawa National Wildlife Refuge located just 15 miles east of Toledo, Magee Marsh Wildlife Area and the Toussaint River. Ottawa National Wildlife Refuge manages 6,500 acres of wetlands, grasslands and woodlands for protection of a wide diversity of waterfowl and other migratory birds, resident wildlife, and threatened and endangered species. Refuge biologists and volunteers have confirmed that they are now reproducing in refuge. What a thrill for conservationists and nature lovers to see them frolicking in the waters of western Lake Erie after an 80-year absence.
In March 2019, a naturalist discovered a set of tracks in the snow at Point Pelee National Park in Leamington, Ontario, on the northern shore of western Lake Erie. The tracks were discovered near the DeLaurier Canal and immediately they knew that they were not the mink tracks often seen in the park. There was a set of mink tracks nearby for comparison, which were much smaller, narrower and of course did not have the “slide” marks characteristic of otters.
Tumblr media
Suspected river otter tracks at DeLaurier Canal, 2019. (Photo courtesy of Point Pelee National Park.)
Then in June 2019, two Parks Canada team members were in a boat entering the channel to West Cranberry Pond in the park marsh when an otter swam very close to their boat before diving underneath. Within a couple of weeks of that sighting, another team member working at the marsh boardwalk saw an otter swimming in the open water just to the left of the marsh tower. You can imagine how exciting it would be for a naturalist to see the return of river otters to this revered national park for the first time since it was established in 1918.
Situated on the northern shore of Lake Ontario is Toronto – Canada’s largest city and a key hub of the nation’s commercial, financial, industrial and cultural life. It has long been recognized as a pollution hotspot. In 1985 the International Joint Commission identified Toronto and region as a Great Lakes pollution hotspot and area of concern. Since then, substantial cleanup of pollution and habitat restoration have occurred, resulting in a surprising ecological revival.
More than $80 million alone have been invested in habitat restoration in Toronto and region since 1987. One exciting wetland restoration project has been Corner Marsh at Duffins Creek. For decades it had been in a degraded state, and over 10 years ago it was restored to the point where wetland vegetation, nesting birds and amphibians were flourishing again. Corner Marsh now has the highest population density of muskrats on the north shore of Lake Ontario, which attracted river otters to the area. River otters then spread from Duffins Creek and now occupy the entire Toronto waterfront. It has been over a hundred years since river otters freely inhabited the Toronto waterfront.
Knowing that river otters have returned to the once heavily polluted Toronto Harbour, that they have been successfully reintroduced into eastern Ohio, and that they have now been seen along western Lake Erie in Point Pelee National Park, Ottawa National Wildlife Refuge and other locations, is it possible that they just might return one day to the Detroit River?
I say yes.
Skeptics might say no. But we must all remember that as recently as 1985 there were no bald eagles, peregrine falcons, or osprey reproducing in the Detroit River watershed because of eggshell thinning caused by pesticides like DDT, no lake sturgeon or lake whitefish were reproducing in the Detroit River, and beavers had long disappeared.
Today they are all back. Wouldn’t it be wonderful if we had one more ecological surprise?
Check out the Detroit Zoo’s live otter cam HERE.

Excerpt from this EcoWatch story:
Nestlé cannot claim that its Ice Mountain bottled water brand is an essential public service, according to Michigan's second highest court, which delivered a legal blow to the food and beverage giant in a unanimous decision.
The three-judge panel that sits on Michigan's Court of Appeals said bottled water is not a public water supply, and Osceola Township was completely within its rights to reject Nestlé's bid to put a booster pumping structure in an area zoned for agricultural use, as the Detroit Free Press reported.
"The circuit court's conclusion that [Nestlé's] commercial water bottling operation is an 'essential public service' is clearly erroneous," the judges wrote, as The Guardian reported. "Other than in areas with no other source of water, bottled water is not essential."
The issue in question is that Nestlé wants to increase the amount of water it takes from the groundwater in Michigan's Osceola County from 250 gallons per minute to 400 gallons per minute. Environmental groups say the 250 gallons per minute that Nestlé takes from the groundwater is already too much. They say the effect is already seen in lower levels of nearby wetlands, rivers and streams, according to the Detroit Free Press. Nestlé, however, contends that its operation causes no harm.
Michigan's Department of Environmental Quality approved a permit for the increase last year, but that decision is awaiting an appeal. In order to extract so much water, the Nestlé needs a booster pump station along the pipeline that carries water from the well to tanker trucks, as the AP reported.
The owner of the property where Nestlé wants to install the booster pump station agreed to the project, but the township said the structure is not allowed in an area zoned for agriculture, according to the AP.
For Nestlé to carry out its plan, it has to prove that it provides an essential public service, which the court rejected as implausible. The ruling may have a ripple effect on Nestlé's ambition to privatize water around the country, as The Guardian reported.

Big Data Suggests Big Potential For Urban Farming
CONTENT SOURCED FROM CITYLAB
Gotham Greens’ boxed lettuces have been popping up on the shelves of high-end grocers in New York and the Upper Midwest since 2009, and with names like “Windy City Crunch,” “Queens Crisp,” and “Blooming Brooklyn Iceberg,” it’s clear the company is selling a story as much as it is selling salad.
Grown in hydroponic greenhouses on the rooftops of buildings in New York and Chicago, the greens are shipped to nearby stores and restaurants within hours of being harvested. That means a fresher product, less spoilage, and lower transportation emissions than a similar rural operation might have—plus, for the customer, the warm feeling of participating in a local food web.
“As a company, we want to connect urban residents to their food, with produce grown a few short miles from where you are,” said Viraj Puri, Gotham Greens’ co-founder and CEO.
Gotham Greens’ appealing narrative and eight-figure annual revenues suggest a healthy future for urban agriculture. But while it makes intuitive sense that growing crops as close as possible to the people who will eat them is more environmentally friendly than shipping them across continents, evidence that urban agriculture is good for the environment has been harder to pin down.
A widely cited 2008 study by researchers at Carnegie Mellon University found that transportation from producer to store only accounts for 4 percent of food’s total greenhouse gas emissions, which calls into question the concern over “food miles.” Meanwhile, some forms of urban farming may be more energy-intensive than rural agriculture, especially indoor vertical farms that rely on artificial lighting and climate control.
An operation like Gotham Greens can recycle water through its hydroponic system, but outdoor farms such as the ones sprouting on vacant lots in Detroit usually require irrigation, a potential problem when many municipal water systems are struggling to keep up with demand. And many urban farms struggle financially; in a 2016 survey of urban farmers in the U.S., only one in three said they made a living from the farm.
Although cities and states have begun to loosen restrictions on urban agriculture, and even to encourage it with financial incentives, it has remained an open question whether growing food in cities is ultimately going to make them greener. Will the amount of food produced be worth the tradeoffs? A recent analysis of urban agriculture’s global potential, published in the journal Earth’s Future, has taken a big step toward an answer—and the news looks good for urban farming.
“Not only could urban agriculture account for several percent of global food production, but there are added co-benefits beyond that, and beyond the social impacts,” said Matei Georgescu, a professor of geographical sciences and urban planning at Arizona State University and a co-author of the study, along with other researchers at Arizona State, Google, China’s Tsinghua University, the University of California, Berkeley, and the University of Hawaii.

Using Google’s Earth Engine software, as well as population, meteorological, and other datasets, the researchers determined that, if fully implemented in cities around the world, urban agriculture could produce as much as 180 million metric tons of food a year—perhaps 10 percent of the global output of legumes, roots and tubers, and vegetable crops.
Those numbers are big. Researchers hope they encourage other scientists, as well as urban planners and local leaders, to begin to take urban agriculture more seriously as a potential force for sustainability.
The study also looks at “ecosystem services” associated with urban agriculture, including reduction of the urban heat-island effect, avoided stormwater runoff, nitrogen fixation, pest control, and energy savings. Taken together, these additional benefits make urban agriculture worth as much as $160 billion annually around the globe. The concept of ecosystem services has been around for decades, but it is growing in popularity as a way to account, in economic terms, for the benefits that humans gain from healthy ecosystems. Georgescu and his collaborators decided to investigate the potential ecosystem services that could be provided through widespread adoption of urban agriculture, something that had not been attempted before.
The team began with satellite imagery, using pre-existing analyses to determine which pixels in the images were likely to represent vegetation and urban infrastructure. Looking at existing vegetation in cities (it can be difficult to determine, from satellite imagery, what’s a park and what’s a farm), as well as suitable roofs, vacant land, and potential locations for vertical farms, they created a system for analyzing the benefits of so-called “natural capital”—here, that means soil and plants—on a global and country-wide scale.
Beyond the benefits we already enjoy from having street trees and parks in our cities, the researchers estimated that fully-realized urban agriculture could provide as much as 15 billion kilowatt hours of annual energy savings worldwide—equivalent to nearly half the power generated by solar panels in the U.S. It could also sequester up to 170,000 tons of nitrogen and prevent as much as 57 billion cubic meters of stormwater runoff, a major source of pollution in rivers and streams.
“We had no notion of what we would find until we developed the algorithm and the models and made the calculation,” Georgescu said. “And that work had never been done before. This is a benchmark study, and our hope with this work is that others now know what sort of data to look for.”
Robert Costanza, a professor of public policy at Australian National University, cofounded the International Society for Ecological Economics and researches sustainable urbanism and the economic relationship between humans and our environment. He called the study (in which he played no part) “a major advance.”
“This is the first global estimate of the potential for urban agriculture,” Costanza wrote in an email. “Urban agriculture will never feed the world, and this paper confirms that, but the important point is that natural capital in cities can be vastly improved and this would produce a range of benefits, not just food.”
Costanza said he would like to see the researchers’ big data approach become standard in urban planning, as a way to determine the best balance between urban infrastructure and green space—whether it’s farms, forests, parks, or wetlands. That is the researchers’ hope as well, and they’ve released their code to allow other scientists and urban planners to run their own data, especially at the local level.
“Somebody, maybe in Romania, say, could just plug their values in and that will produce local estimates,” Georgescu said. “If they have a grand vision of developing or expanding some city with X amount of available land where urban agriculture can be grown, they can now quantify these added co-benefits.”
That could be very valuable, said Sabina Shaikh, director of the Program on the Global Environment at the University of Chicago, who researches the urban environment and the economics of environmental policy.
“Ecosystem services is something that is very site-specific,” she said. “But this research may help people make comparisons a little bit better, particularly policymakers who want to think through, ‘What’s the benefit of a park vs. food production?’ or some combination of things. It doesn’t necessarily mean, because it has the additional benefit of food production, that a farm is going to be more highly valued than a park. But it gives policymakers another tool, another thing to consider.”

East Harbor State Park
1169 N. Buck Rd.
Lakeside-Marblehead, OH 43440 Ohio’s 1,831-acre East Harbor State Park is located on the shores of Lake Erie, and offers unlimited opportunities for outdoor recreation. This park includes a beach area, campground, marina, seven miles of hiking trails, and wetland wildlife preserve areas. Visitors can enjoy boating, fishing, swimming, picnicking, hunting, camping, and disc golf. Nature enthusiasts will enjoy the abundance of waterfowl, shorebirds, and other species of wildlife found in the park’s scenic wetlands. A thin stretch of sand beach juts north-ward into the waters of Erie, separating Middle Harbor from the lake. Part of this beach was damaged in 1972 by a storm, washing away a large section of the two-mile beach. The current beach is a much smaller area to the north of the park, where swimming is permitted. Four segmented offshore breakwaters have been constructed on the Northern section of beach, to sustain what is left of the sandy shoreline.
Before European settlement, the East Harbor region was home to Native Americans including the Ottawa and Wyandot tribes. Ottawa in native tongue means “trader.” An east-west trail skirted the southern shore of Lake Erie connecting the Pittsburgh and Detroit settlements, and also linked with the famed Scioto Trail from the south. This important area remained occupied by Native Americans until the War of 1812. After the Great Black Swamp was eventually drained, the land became highly productive. Fruits, particularly peaches and grapes, were grown extensively. The grape culture became very successful as a result of quality soil, natural drainage, and suitable climate. Marblehead Lighthouse was erected in 1821 east of the park on the Marblehead Peninsula to aid navigation in and out of Sandusky Bay. Johnson’s Island, on the bay side of the peninsula, was the site of a prison for Confederate soldiers captured during the Civil War. A Confederate cemetery still remains on the island. The region has long been valued as a recreation area. The unique plant and animal life, sandy beaches, marshland, and the lake itself led to the development of East Harbor State Park. The park is one of northern Ohio’s most popular vacation spots.
East Harbor State Park is situated on a peninsula of land stretching into the waters of Lake Erie. A 2-mile-long strip of beaches and dunes separates the harbor from the open waters of the lake. The harbor itself is the former mouth of the Portage River, which once crossed the Catawba Island peninsula to flow into Lake Erie thousands of years ago. Lake Erie was created during a glacial period when massive sheets of ice gouged and scoured the bedrock of Ohio. The glaciers retreated years ago leaving behind deep depressions that filled with meltwater forming the Great Lakes. Evidence of the force of the ice is found throughout the lake area. Small scratches in the rock surface, known as glacial striations, are common, whereas major glacial grooves, such as those found on Kelleys Island, are rare. East Harbor lies on the fringe of Ohio’s prairie marsh zone. These wetlands are remnants of the Great Black Swamp that once covered an area 120 miles long and 30 to 40 miles wide. After a period of intense lumbering and draining in the late 1800s, the swamp was nearly destroyed. Only 10 percent of Ohio’s original wetlands now remain. These wetlands harbor more wildlife than any other type of habitat in Ohio. Reptiles and amphibians are numerous including the green frog, American toad, water snake, fox snake, and painted turtle. Large numbers of ducks, geese, gulls, terns, and other migratory waterfowl delight birdwatchers. Middle Harbor is a birding hotspot where black-crowned night herons, egrets, great blue herons, and other shorebirds find refuge. Furbearers in the park include muskrat and red fox. Hundreds of migrating songbirds rest here before flying north across the lake.

Alligators make terrible pets: 'You're basically dealing with a dinosaur.'
New Mexico officials seized this seven-foot American alligator (seen here at his new home, the ABQ BioPark Zoo) from a private home, where he'd been kept illegally for a decade.
A rise in the abandoned reptiles around the United States—including two recently found in a Kansas creek—has raised concern among experts.
JULY 31, 2020
Something unusual was lurking in Wildcat Creek, in Manhattan, Kansas, a small college town on the prairie. In June, townsfolk spotted two American alligators swimming in a body of water better known for reptiles such as garter snakes and painted turtles.
Further investigation revealed that a thief—still at large—had stolen the gators from a local pet shop and released them into the creek. Rescuers set humane traps to catch the animals, but the female, Pebbles, died after falling into the water inside one of these traps. The male, Beauregard, eluded capture until late July, when a construction worker caught and returned him to his owners at Manhattan Reptile World, according to their Facebook page.
The two gators, kept at Manhattan Reptile World under a state zoo permit, had previously been illegal pets, living in a pool and a bathtub in Manhattan and Kansas City, according to a news release. (Learn more about why people want exotic pets.)
The incident—particularly the female’s untimely death—highlights the often problematic, yet not widely known, phenomenon of keeping pet American alligators, which are native to the U.S. Southeast, experts say. (Read more about the exotic pet trade.)
Formerly endangered, American alligators reached their nadir in the 1950s because of overhunting and habitat loss, but conservation efforts returned the species to healthy numbers by the mid-1980s. Weighing up to a thousand pounds, these behemoths live in wetlands, rivers, lakes, and swamps, feeding primarily on fish, turtles, snakes, and small mammals. (Watch alligators on the hunt.)
Official numbers on how many American alligators are kept as pets don’t exist, but some states have estimates. There are likely 5,000 in Michigan; at least 50 in Phoenix, Arizona; and as many as 52 of the prehistoric reptiles are surrendered to the city of Chicago each year.
American Alligator, Alligator mississippiensis
TYPE: Reptile
DIET: Carnivore
GROUP NAME: Congregation
AVERAGE LIFE SPAN IN THE WILD: 35-50 years
SIZE: 10-15 feet
WEIGHT: 1,000#
In recent years, wildlife officials across the nation have noticed an uptick in alligators abandoned in parks, creeks, and other public places. In 2019, six pet alligators went on the loose in Detroit (one was shot to death), and in August, the New Mexico Department of Game and Fish seized an alligator from a Santa Fe man who had kept the animal illegally for 10 years.
Gator laws
Ownership laws for alligators vary by state and municipality. While keeping them is legal in Michigan, parts of Detroit ban private ownership. In other states, such as New Mexico, pet gators are illegal without a permit, and in Arizona and New York, private ownership is banned.
Such regulations don’t faze many collectors who covet palm-size baby gators. A quick search for pet alligators turns up dozens of websites that sell juvenile alligators for anywhere from $150 to $15,000 (for an albino animal). Most of these young reptiles come from legal alligator breeders in the Southeast who sell the animals wholesale to vendors.
The black market trade of these animals has long been “a big problem,” according to Matt Eschenbrenner, director of animal care and conservation at the Great Plains Zoo and Delbridge Museum of Natural History, in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. It’s likely that most of these animals originate in Florida, says Russ Johnson, president of the Phoenix Herpetological Society.
Florida has strict alligator farming laws and inspection protocols, but not all breeders play by the rules. In 2018, the state reported 21 active alligator farms that produced legal hides and meat. Not present on this list are unlicensed operations that illegally breed gators as pets. (Read about the largest seizure to date of illegally caught reptiles.)
Bone breakers
Most gator pet owners are unprepared to care for an adult animal that can reach 14 feet and live 80 years, Johnson says. When that cute baby gets bigger and less manageable, the owner faces a real conundrum. “It’s not like owning a cat or dog that will return love,” he adds. “You’re basically dealing with a dinosaur.”
To capture their prey, alligators are armed with strong jaws lined with up to 80 teeth. If captive gators don’t get enough food—a common problem—they can get cranky and bite, easily breaking through human bone. “It’s not the alligator’s fault,” Johnson says. “The alligator was just being an alligator.”
This happens, he says, because feeding an alligator is expensive. Adults need nourishment such as whole chickens or pork with the bone, and Johnson says he pays about $150 a month to feed each adult alligator at his rescue facility.
Alligators also need a large pool of water to thrive. Bathtubs and kiddie pools, preferred by many pet owners, aren’t good enough, Eschenbrenner says. Buoyancy relieves the weight of an alligator’s internal organs, and if the water isn’t deep enough for a gator to float, it can suffer pain and even die from the pressure of its own internal weight. Plentiful water helps alligators feel safe and calm in their environment, he adds.
The right temperature is a requirement too. As natives of the U.S. Southeast, alligators are used to living in a warm-to-hot environment, and pet owners may need to use several heat lamps to keep the cold-blooded animals warm, Eschenbrenner says.
Health woes
Because many people keep pet alligators illegally, the animals miss out on routine veterinary care. As a result, serious health problems may go unchecked for years.
Eschenbrenner recalls one alligator rescued from a home in New Mexico that had been kept in a kiddie pool for a decade. The animal was obese, but even so, poor nutrition had stunted its growth and caused dental problems—it was unable to fully close its mouth because the top and bottom jaws were misaligned.
Many pet alligators develop weakened bones because of a nutrient-poor diet, such as hamburger meat or deboned chicken. One alligator rescued in Arizona was so low on calcium that its jaws were “like a rubber band,” Johnson says. Another was so malnourished that it broke its back leg while trying to escape rescuers.
Unnatural surfaces can be harmful: One alligator raised on a glass platform had a disfigured skeleton because of improperly settled bones.
Considering the difficulties of keeping an alligator, much less a healthy one, it’s no surprise that when the animals become too difficult to care for, their owners abandon or kill them—or surrender them to the authorities, Johnson says.
Good homes for gators
There are people trying to make life better for abandoned alligators. For example, the Phoenix Herpetological Society, in Arizona, provides a natural, semi-wild habitat for 15 rescued alligators at its 2.5-acre sanctuary—along with a number of other abandoned, abused, and confiscated reptiles. The facility, which has an on-site reptile clinic and research center, aims to find permanent homes for many of its animals, often sending them to other reputable sanctuaries around the country.
Female crocs lay their eggs in clutches of 20 to 60. After the eggs have incubated for about three months, the mother opens the nest and helps her young out of their shells.
Alligators' heads are shorter and wider than crocodiles'. Although heavy and slow on land, they can ambush their prey from the water by lunging at speeds of 30 miles (48 kilometers) per hour.
Nile crocodiles are the largest crocodilians in Africa, sometimes reaching 20 feet (6 meters) long.
Saved from the brink of extinction, the American alligator now thrives in its native habitat: the swamps and wetlands of the southeastern United States.
Critically endangered, the prehistoric-looking American crocodile struggles to survive in pockets of shrinking habitat.
The largest crocodilians on Earth, saltwater crocs, or "salties," are excellent swimmers and have often been spotted far out at sea.
American alligators are found in freshwater coastal wetlands across the southeastern United States, from Louisiana to the Carolinas.
Mother Nile crocodiles lay their eggs in a buried nest, opening it when high-pitched squeaks are heard from within. The sex of baby crocs is dependent upon the temperature of the nest rather than genetics.
The best solution, Eschenbrenner says, is not to own an alligator in the first place. “I would never have an animal like this as a pet, period.”
A good option for alligator enthusiasts is to appreciate them from a distance by supporting conservation groups or a certified zoo that keeps the animals properly for public education, he says.
Owning one is “doing an injustice to this animal,” Eschenbrenner says. “You’re causing it more harm than good.”
