At Katmai National Park and Preserve in #Alaska, #salmon are the lifeblood of a fertile coastal ecosystem. At #BrooksFalls, the salmon must run a gauntlet of hungry bears, wolves, birds and other fish-eaters before proceeding further inland to spawn. Every summer, tens of thousands of sockeye salmon migrate from Bristol Bay to #spawn in rivers adjacent to large lakes, such as the #BrooksRiver, which connects Lake Brooks and Naknek Lake in the park. These homecoming salmon—weighing an average of 5-7 pounds—spend their first years of life in freshwater and their last 2-3 years in the ocean, where they attain the bulk of their mass. A #SockeyeSalmon fresh from the sea in July contains around 4,500 calories; a spawned out salmon in September may only have half that many. The Bears feast on them and turn into the celebrities from #FatBearWeek we all love. Baby fox kisses = mood improved📈
Bombay Hook National Wildlife Refuge in Delaware protects one of the largest remaining expanses of tidal salt marsh in the mid-Atlantic region and provides excellent habitat for a terrific variety of wildlife. The refuge is home to eagles, hawks, ducks, geese, and litters of cute baby fox or kits.
Dependent on their mothers through the spring and summer, fox kits will become independent in autumn. With excellent hearing, quick reflexes and sharp wits, it won’t be long before these little fuzzies turn into skilled hunters.

Find us another tail wag that’s cuter. We’ll wait.
Wildlife cameras like this one at the National Elk Refuge in Wyoming, are a great way for scientists to study wildlife movements, health, and population.
It's also a great way to see baby deer or fawns running cutely after mom.

Great Basin National Park in Nevada is one of the darkest spots in the United States. What better time to appreciate this park's clear night sky, then on International Day of Clean Air? Good air quality coupled with a lack of light pollution give visitors majestic starry views of Wheeler Peak. On clear, moonless nights at Great Basin, thousands of stars, numerous planets, star clusters, meteors, man-made satellites, the Andromeda Galaxy, and the Milky Way can be seen with the naked eye. The area boasts some of the darkest night skies left in the country. Low humidity, good air quality, and minimal light pollution, combined with high elevation, create a unique window to the universe. Watch as the color of Crater Lake National Park's famous blue water deepens brilliantly.
The park's water comes directly from snow and rain -- there are no other water sources, which means there is no sediment or minerals, helping it maintain its rich color and making it one of the cleanest and clearest lakes in the world.

Wave your hands in the air if you're ready for Fat Bear Week 2021! 🐻🐟
The time honored tradition of rooting for your favorite rotund Katmai National Park and Preserve bear is back. As the fall comes and goes in Alaska, brown bears have been going through a process called hyperphagia — an overwhelming urge to eat as much as possible to prepare for winter.
Fattening up is a matter of life and death for these beefy bears. The ones that pack on the most pounds are the bears most likely to survive the dark, cold months ahead. So always remember, a fat bear is a healthy bear.
Voting starts tomorrow and you can participate in all the virtual fun on the Katmai social media sites.
Video by Lian Law, NPS. Video description: A bear laying on its back in a lumpy grassy area, sticks its paws straight up in the air and waves them back and forth as it wiggles for 12 seconds.

Stories shared by Tribal communities, especially those of the Great Plains and Black Hills region, indicate that the Tower was and still is a sacred site.
Many Tribes still utilize the park for traditional ceremonies. Visitors will observe prayer cloths and prayer bundles attached to trees around the park, especially along the Tower Trail. These represent a tangible connection which Native people still maintain with this area. Please do not touch, disturb, or photograph these cloths.
Connections to this place are as important today as they were for generations before it became Devil’s Tower National Monument.

Do you hear the buzzing of spring? The desert lily’s sweet fragrance attracts many types of bees and butterflies. The flower grows in southeastern California and western Arizona, and this photo was taken at Bureau of Land Management’s Desert Lily Preserve. Desert lilies grow from a bulb deep within the ground, with a thick stem of 1-4 feet tall. Its large flowers are cream-colored and funnel-shaped and appear in clusters that can be up to a foot long. When spring hits the desert, these blooms are a welcome sight. Photo by Bob Wick, Bureau of Land Management

Ahhhhh nature. It’s so healing, right?
With towering cliffs, flowing water and a rich diversity of flora and fauna, Aravaipa Canyon Wilderness remains one of Arizona's truly unique areas. Seven species of native desert fish, desert bighorn sheep, and over 200 species of birds live among shady cottonwoods along the perennial waters of Aravaipa Creek.
