Faithful Angel Ch. 5: Amina Semi-Defies Jimmy~...

Amina pouted as she was driven home to the hotel in a taxi. It wasn't fair that she had to wait for Jimmy to return after the club. Why couldn't she go too? She didn't have to drink.

She didn't have to do anything really.

But then it hit her...

Seeing as she was in a taxi...

Perhaps she didn't have to go home after all either.

Checking her bag she found her lipstick in her fave shade of Bitten Cherry Red & began slicking it across her lips. Using a light touch to apply some to the apples of her cheeks with her fingers as a blush. Cleaning her fingers with a handkerchief & then swiping frosty blue eyeshadow across her lids similarly before giving her fingers yet another wipe.

Tapping the driver on the shoulder as they got into the center of town, Amina alerted him to her change of plans for the night.

"Club Boa please..."

Jimmy felt uneasy. The kids dancing around him to the thumping beat. Robert holding court amidst a gaggle of insipidly giggling fraulein & yelling his song requests to the DJ nearby. Bonzo talking cars with their host & the owner of the club. Jonesy chatting up a pretty brunette. All the girls on the floor seemingly trying to catch their eye. Trying to catch them. Trying to catch him. He felt caught as it is.

And then she walked in...

He saw her in pieces as she made her way in the mass of raving humanity this part of Germany called a top club. He couldn't get a good full look at her amidst the darkness & the darting strobes but what he see piqued his interest & got him out of his own head if only for the moment.

Red blushed cheeks & lips & red slashed eyelids mixed with tinges of frosty blue lids. Very au courant. Making her soft brown eyes all the more striking. The angles of her cheekbones defined against the baby fat of her pouting countenance. A petulant German expressionistic face.

Seductive... Yet dismissive... Uncaring of the glitterati around her it seemed... All that mattered was the music... The moment... The beat... And she gave herself willingly up to it all...

Determined... Yet lost... A strong sense of anchoredness amidst being adrift... Directionless in the sea of similarly misspent youth... A Weimar baby born 50 years too late it seemed...

To watch her dance was to see her come alive. To see something fluid amidst all the jerking & bobbing & pogoing on the discolit dance floor. The music moved her. It moved through her. Just as she seemed to breathe through it.

He watched as her spirits seemed to lift... As her arms lifted... As her shirt did as well... Cropped or tied though it was he couldn't tell from here... As it lifted, he noticed something... A birthmark...

A very familiar birthmark indeed...

He had seen it a time or two before...

In hotel pools...

In hotel rooms...

In dressing rooms...

In the most secret & private of moments...

When he'd lifted her shirt amidst wandering caresses...

It couldn't be...

He brushed his hair, still damp from his shower, away from his eyes in order to get a better look. Regarding her in full now that he could see all of her. Gazing at her more intently now... Incredulously... Through the haze of the club & the soft fog of his cigarette as the strobe light flashed her way & she danced closer to the center of the dance floor. More in his line of sight. Yet still seemingly unseeing of him as she lost herself in the music.

Petulant pout... Full cheeks made more streamlined & less babyfaced with slashes of red... Arresting, warm, sleepy brown eyes... Moody countenance... A face both indolent & insolent... Ravishingly beautiful... Suspended in time... Between time seemingly... Multiple eras combined in one girl... Weimar & Modern... Dressed in what seemed to be Victorian or Edwardian chemise top & a long red bohemian skirt slung low on her hips with a purple scarf as a belt...

The same skirt & scarf he'd often see her with in the wings of the stage he realized... The top he might've seen a time or two though he supposed it was new... Now he could see clearly... Jimmy feeling a shiver rattling his spine, growing suddenly cold then with realization...

He didn't know how he didn't recognize her by the clothes alone!... It must've been the dim lighting & fog & darting strobes mixed with mirrorball reflections getting in his eyes...

It was her...

Her...

Amina...

Sweet Amina...

Little Amina...

His Amina...

His Aminadear...

His Aminadearest...

His Aminadarling...

And now she was being accosted...

By a tall sandy haired ne'er do well he'd heard of in passing...

Adam Denis...

A snotnosed playboy punk he knew had NO business being around her...

No...

Not Amina...

Not His Amina...

Denis could have his pick of Germany, Europe & parts abroad & Jimmy wouldn't mind or care one bit...

But not HIS Amina...

Not dear sweet little Amina...

Aminadarling...

And yet there he was...

Trying to chat her up by the looks of it...

Getting too close for comfort it seemed...

Both for young Amina...

Seeing how she seemed to shrink away from him...

And DEFINITELY for Jimmy...

His jaw clenching, hands balling up into whiteknuckled fists, with one clenching the now empty packet of cigarettes at the sight...

That was it!...

He had to do something about it!...

The Evolution of music videos (history)

Throughout the years thanks to advancements in science and technology and access to greater media, Music videos have improved in terms of quality, sound and plot development from when they were initially introduced. There are obvious differences in music videos we see now in comparison to those that were released twenty years ago. This post will only discuss brief information regarding the changes in music videos over a period of time and will reflect on what music videos were like twenty to thirty years back. I have selected a time frame at random discussing a popular video style and ideology and then compare to what is trending now. Thee were several channels and networks that developed over the years so people could watch and listen to music.

Top of the pops:

Top of the Pops, also known as TOTP, is a British music chart television programme, made by the BBC and originally broadcast weekly between 1 January 1964 and 30 July 2006. It was traditionally shown every Thursday evening on BBC, except for a short period on Fridays in mid-1973 before being again moved to Fridays in 1996, and then to Sundays on BBC Two in 2005. Each weekly programme consisted of performances from some of that week's best-selling popular music artists, with a rundown of that week's singles chart.

The show saw many changes through the decades, in style, design, fashion and taste. It periodically had some aspect of its title sequence, logo and theme tune, format, or set design altered in some way, keeping the show looking modern despite its age.

The end: The magazine and TOTP2 have both survived despite the show's axing, and the Christmas editions also continue after returning to BBC One. However, the TOTP website, which the BBC had originally promised would continue, is now no longer updated, although many of the old features of the site – interviews, music news, reviews – have remained, now in the form of the Radio 1-affiliated TOTP Chart Blog accessible via the remains of the old website.

The early era (1965)

This track by the Rolling stones was popular because its lyrics were considered too sexually suggestive.It later became the Rolling Stones' fourth number one in the United Kingdom. A live performance in Hampton Roads, Virginia, in 1981 was released as an official music video. The footage was in black and white because of the art style and the band was just playing live music, so to add an edge to the video they made it black and white. This is a performance based video but the camera quality and angles are not nearly as flattering or High definition as compared to videos of today, however despite the suggestive lyrics the video had no connection to the song, thus making this a combination of performance and concept based music video.

Another popular track

"We Can Work It Out" is a song by the English rock band the Beatles, written by Paul McCartney and John Lennon. It was first issued as a double A-side single with "Day Tripper" in December 1965. Filming took place at Twickenham Film Studios in south-west London on 23 November 1965, The Beatles made a total of ten black-and-white promos that day. In the 1960s rock music was much more popular than other music genres, most videos shared common factors and styles, similarly a lot of music videos that are released now share the same color combinations and ideas too.

(1985)

"We Built This City" is a 1985 song written by Bernie Taupin, Martin Page, Dennis Lambert, and Peter Wolf, and originally recorded by US rock group Starship and released as their debut single on their album Knee Deep in the Hoopla. Surprisingly In 2011 a Rolling Stone magazine online readers poll named "We Built This City" as the worst song of the 1980s. The song's winning margin was so large that the magazine reported it "could be the biggest blow-out victory in the history of the Rolling Stone Readers Poll".

This video has much better camera quality and there is a variety of colors that are no visible to the screen, the videos had improved as such in terms of quality and creativity, there is a concept and narrative in the music videos of 1985, unlike 1965 where they were mostly performance based with bad reception.

Introducing MTV:

The channel originally aired music videos as guided by television personalities known as "video jockeys". In its early years, MTV's main target demographic was young adults, but today it is primarily towards teenagers, particularly high school and college students. Several other ideas for music video-based television programming had been around since the early 1960s. The Beatles had used music videos to promote their records starting in the mid-1960s. The creative use of music videos within their 1964 film A Hard Day's Night, particularly the performance of the song "Can't Buy Me Love", led MTV later on June 26, 1999, to honor the film's director Richard Lester with an award for "basically inventing the music video".

How did it become so popular?

The music video that practically invented MTV 7 years before its launch. This song is “widely credited as the first global hit single for which an accompanying video was central to the marketing strategy”(Fowles, Paul (2009). A Concise History of Rock Music. Mel Bay Publications, Inc. p. 243.)

YouTube:

YouTube allows users to upload, view, rate, share, add to favorites, report, comment on videos, and subscribe to other users.YouTube is the most used and easily accessible network for viewing music videos and listening to new upcoming music for free. Unfortunately if videos have been uploaded from unauthorized or fake accounts belonging to fans or celebrities they are taken down, because of copyright issues. Many celebrities have switched to Tidal or Apple music because they earn more revenue using those networks but undoubtedly music becomes more popular and reaches the charts through YouTube. Videos become extremely popular and get the most videos than on any other channel on YouTube, it is factually the best channel to market a song or execute a release of an album.

What is Vevo?

Vevo only hosts music videos from both Universal Music Group and Sony Music Entertainment syndicated on YouTube and its website, Many artists sell their music to Vevo and the company helps in the production, release and execution of the song, many artists Do not use Vevo and have their own YouTube channels for maximum revenue and because they already have their own directors, co-producers, other channels on YouTube such as Mrsuicidesheep Only play music and add visually impressive, concept based videos with the song.

In my opinion, 2005-2008 was the golden era of music style, song and videos. There were more women issue related songs, with much more creative choreography and miscense, improvement in the quality of videos and style.

Clearly the image and video quality is much clearer, better equipment and advanced cameras have clearly been used to shoot the video, not only is the song a popular hit but it is a strange mixture of pop and rock, it is a depiction of how women feel or how the performer feels towards being catcalled.

"Boulevard of Broken Dreams" is a song by American punk rock band Green Day, recorded for their seventh studio album American Idiot (2004). Reprise Records released "Boulevard of Broken Dreams" as the second single from American Idiot. The video depicts the band members after their car has stalled in the desert, and they begin a melancholy walk down a dusty road. Scenes are interspersed with film footage, taken from around Los Angeles, of homeless people and other miserable sights. The video also features performance footage of the band playing the song in an abandoned warehouse.

Artists in 2005 became more honest and explicit about sexual desires and sexuality in general so many shots and angles were taken from sexually attractive or provocative angles, to generate feelings of curiosity and excitement. Women began showing more skin in music videos and now in modern times, rarely is any music video produced without overly sexualizing and objectifying women.

(2008)

Released in May 2008,and is based on the thematic content of the song of being in a party. The video begins with Gaga arriving with her background dancers at a house party, which seems to have ended. One of the dancers puts a Discolite Boombox on, blaring the music through the house. The crowd at the party appear to be sleeping in different areas, and are awoken by the music they begin to dance. Party culture was the trend and inspiration for most videos in 2008, to have a very messy atomosphere with music blasting and people in funky outfits dancing out of sync uncordinately cordinated dancing.

Party culture mostly trended and was reused by pop artists for pop music, for rap and hiphop usually artists had strange concept based videos, with no actual narrative, these could be called performance based since the rappers were rapping while there were moving images showing them in different places.

(2012)

"HYFR (Hell Ya Fucking Right)", also known as just "HYFR", is a song by Canadian recording artist Drake from his second studio album Take Care (2011).

According to my understanding, with the imrpovement of sound and video quality, there is a major setback which is the type of content and images sometimes used in videos that too sexual or too explicit, in some hip hop and RNB music videos there is a lot of swearing, cussing and objectifying of women. Constant showcasing of cars, wealth and half naked women around one person, like an indication of power.

In 2012, the end of the world was predicted so many songs were based on living life to the fullest and music videos showed people partying, or enjoying, having a good time. This basically shows that whatever popular idea, thought, joke, theory was trending or being shared on social media at the time, it was later incorporated into song or shown in music videos.

(2013)

Breaking the internet!

In 2013 Popular Disney kid show star and pop singer Miley Cyrus made “wrecking ball”, The execution, content, and nudity of the video was too much for the viewers to handle, it was uploaded on YouTube, many people were disgusted by the nudity unjustly stating that women should not be using their bodies for views, but it was an art style, there was much more to the video, very suggestive images and scenes from a star that children looked up to, this gave way to the idea and gave access to other artists to use women and money in videos for views. Pop Music videos dropped in quality content and it gave rise to other genres becoming more popular.

(2015)

RNB culture:

Rhythm Ray Charles and blues (R&B), which combines soulful singing and a strong back beat, was the most popular music created by and for African Americans But now many artists that are not African american do create music and videos within the same genre. From 2015-2017 music celebrating black pride and homosexuality became very popular with videos showing gay and people of color as the performer or the actor, meaningful music is much easier to find in recent years.

Many dark skinned artists such as Beyonce, Nicki Minaj and Jay Z made music videos celebrating color and ethnicity, Beyonce made “formation”

Possibly one of the most iconic videos of 2016, the mise-en-scene, sound quality and styling of the video was very well done and now many videos have amazing quality in terms of videogrpahy, dance choreography,but the narrative, and concept is not well thought out.

Another video that received negative feedback because of the singer’s controversial image and the meaning she tried to create was “blank space”

In 2017

“humble” kendrick lamar in his video and through lyrics tackles social issues like standardizing women bodies and to lessen the showcasing of money and wealth, videos on 2017 do tackle social issues, telling story through moving images, this is the latest song discussing social issues.

another video that has gone viral is

a song about homosexuality, suicide and race, but not through lyrics but through the images, strong, powerful visuals and now videos have much greater meanings behind the songs, there are pointless videos oversexualisation but that culture has died down and there is a hopeful future for music videos countering social problems and serious issues.
