i've still got a lot of problems with the rtd era but i will literally never stop talking about how warm the colour palettes in early nuwho were. so much modern sci-fi is sterile and minimalistic (which i understand considering it's a trademark of the genre), but series 1-4 felt warm and dirty and lived in. the set design wasn't always the best, but you could feel that the people had homes and lives before the doctor. rewatching it feels like coming home from a very, very long day and sitting in front of the fire and i love that so much

(first time watcher here teehee) losing my mind over this exchange. the common consensus is apparently that this episode is below-mid grade filler, but i beg to differ, not even only because it would have been a lifeline to little withdrawn artistic autistic girl me had i watched it at chloe's age. just– look at the subtext. they're talking about themselves, each other, their own mutual codependency. sure, rose wasn't lonely before meeting him per se, but she had been living day-to-day unfulfilled and underappreciated. and four billion? that's close to the population of a decent sized planet. i don't know how many gallifreyans there were and i'm not delving into the wiki for this because it's about words, not numbers. words very particularly chosen. two lonely kids who needed each other, desperate to be loved. 'it' (the relationship, the symbiosis, the empathic link, the isolus as doctor and chloe as rose) will just keep pulling 'kids' in: people, lives. mostly strangers for now, apart from mickey, but it's as if the writers this whole series have been beating over the audience's head with the message... this is the story of a love doom(sday)ed by the narrative. the doctor gets more arrogant, rose gets more infatuated; the little inside jokes and side glances and sarcastic private detective duo dynamic they've got going on, so easygoing and carefree and invincible – it's all set to crash and burn.

The appeal of NuWho s2 is that it’s blatantly obvious that these two idiots are both hopelessly head-over-heels fathoms deep if-I-loved-you-less-I-might-be-able-to-talk-about-it-more in love with each other from the very first episode of the season, and there’s no way that they’re not aware of that fact, they both definitely know, and are almost definitely aware that the other person is in love with them, but neither of them can actually manage to say anything about it because if they were to get serious for half a second they’d have to reckon with Ten’s belief that he destroys everything he touches (which won’t stop being proven correct over and over again) or the fact that Rose will die someday and he won’t or if something were to happen to him he could regenerate and become a completely different person, so you just watch them grin at each other like lovesick fools and be all cute with each other to avoid thinking about how their time together is finite (but oh they ARE thinking about it and there’s so much longing and pining) and every side character they run into assumes they’re an item because look at them they MUST be and they just roll with it because wouldn’t it just be nice to pretend for a second and say things like “aww that was our first date” but never actually come out and say anything to each other directly and so you just have to watch as they do this elaborate dance around the freaking giant elephant in the TARDIS for an entire season and it’s infuriating but you’re eating it up and whoopsie-daisy now your heart’s broken
