“Have you asked your breeder?”

We see this a lot. With health questions, conformation questions, breeding questions, really anything you post online regarding your purebred dog. And right now, it’s getting on my last nerve.

When a post asking for advice has tens of comments all amounting to “talk to your breeder”, the poster has nothing. No answers, no advice, possibly nowhere else to ask.

Because let’s face it y’all- sometimes your breeder ain’t shit. Sometimes they’re unethical and you don’t find out until you’ve had your puppy a full year. Or until you’ve built your foundation with their breedings only to finally make friends outside of their circle and learn about what they’ve been hiding. Or you learn after an election season that they’re not the person you thought they were and continuing a relationship with them could be dangerous for you.

Sometimes your breeder is fine but sucks at communicating. Maybe they’ve got a busy, high stress job. Maybe they aren’t good at texting and you have anxiety around phone calls. Maybe your teaching and learning styles just don’t mesh. Maybe they don’t know anything about what you’re asking- it’s not their sport, not their first language, not their kennel club, not something they’ve dealt with before. Maybe your breeder is ill or has died.

There are so many reasons why reaching out to their breeder is not the right answer. And so many people refuse to acknowledge this, instead just parroting this same tired line. So sure, go ahead and throw in the “talk to your breeder” if you must. But please, please, for the sake of the person who may be new and looking for a little guidance, for the person who may be discouraged by being told to turn to a breeder who has been less than helpful or downright harmful, please answer the damn question.

I fucking ADORE poodles.

So you can imagine my dissatisfaction and even feelings of betrayal, when there was no Pink Poodle. Like why couldn't Gladolia show up? I know that poodles are more than smart enough and dyeing your dog fun colors is not abuse.

Is MC's dog meant to be a service dog or just an emotional support animal?

It's not a service dog in the slightest. I'd say it's closer to an emotional support dog, but the term isn't ever truly used. It's a topic that's brought up as a way to help the MC, or make them feel a bit safer because for various reasons, along their path. It's a companion that's desperately needed in the end.

People of Tumblr, I need your help! I mentioned the other day that my dog had a little procedure. It's left her with three stitches over a sizeable incision.

The problem is, it's on her neck, in a place where a cone would do as much damage as help. She can't get at it to lick it, but she can scratch it and has been trying to. Right now, the only thing stopping her is me telling her no whenever she tries. But I can't have my eyes on her every single second.

The vet suggested cutting up an old t-shirt to make her a scarf. So I cut off a sleeve from a large shirt. It fit over her neck but slipped down a lot. I tried to secure it (to itself, not to her) with a few different things (bobby pins, etc) but one good shake, and it was gone. So then I tried cutting a much bigger loop out of the t-shirt, so that I could knot it and the same thing happened, one or two good shakes and it slipped down her neck.

I'm kind of at my wits end here. She doesn't get the stitches out for two weeks and I'm going to have to leave my house eventually. Does anyone have any ideas???

A good boy.

To the best of my knowledge he's part blue heeler, but he's bigger than a full heeler and mostly black (but I don't think labrador). Also has a curly tail.

Thinking about this poem Empress Dowager Cixi wrote,

She wrote a poem that actually kinda doubles as a breed standard. About the Pekingese dog, one of the oldest dog breeds known to man, so old that it and other ancient Chinese dog breeds share incredible levels of gene relation to wolves. So ancient that part of them is the strongest link to the history of the domestication of wolves.

i wish more people understood that mental stimulation is just as important for dogs as physical exercise!! of course exercise is important in keeping your dog healthy and everything but i think a lot of people who have crazy dogs that feel they wont calm down should try tiring their dog out mentally. i think a lot (NOT ALL) of surrendering dogs to shelters for having too much energy could be avoided if people knew more how to wear their dogs out using their noggins! and i do think mental stimulation and puzzle toys and stuff are becoming more common these days which is good!! plus if you have a crazy energetic dog, only wearing them out with physical exercise builds their endurance and makes them more crazy energetic 🥴
