how to stand in solidarity with the WGA as non-screenwriting writers
if you're a writer with adaptable material, do not negotiate or even discuss contracts for adaptations with struck studios. do not sign documents. do not turn in materials.
if you have an agent and your agent has been negotiating, ask them to halt negotiations. don't provide struck studios with material while screenwriters are on strike!
I hope it goes without saying that you should not do any screenwriting for struck studios during the strike. if solidarity isn't a good enough reason for you not to take on projects, the WGA is apparently very strict and will not allow you membership in the future if you've scabbed in the past. additionally, there's a REASON the WGA is striking. if you think the studios are going to treat you any better than they do current members after you get a foot in the door as a scab, think again.
the WGA provides information about not crossing the picket line here.
you can also find a list of struck companies here. (it's a csv download just fyi, the actual list is not on the linked webpage)
finally: please remember during strikes to always listen to UNION asks!! unions know how to achieve what they want and will provide specific action items. when in doubt, boost their social media posts. listen to the union. do not take matters into your own hands and decide on actions that the union has not asked for. LISTEN TO THE UNION.

Honestly, even if it was possible to catch up on every single piece of media I haven't consumed yet, and I was enormously bored because of the writer/actor strike, I would STILL rather them be on strike than not. Because I want them to have safe working conditions and for them to be properly compensated for their work.
In the same vein, I have no intention of joining the writer's guild or the screen actor's guild ever in my life- I'm in an entirely unrelated industry. I still wouldn't promote struck work. Not because of my own future, but for the future of these people, and their livelihoods.
We shouldn't need to frame everything about the strike in terms of how it affects us personally. Its important enough that these people deserve to be paid fairly and treated well. Stand with unions, not because it benefits us, but because it benefits them.

As one of my posts about a company unionbusting got traction, the chatter in the notes has reminded me to remind us all that: solidarity isn't supposed to be easy. If it were easy, we probably wouldn't need it or it would be ineffective anyway. So many things that are RIGHT are not easy.
YES companies you love sometimes are going to do heinous shit, and boycotting can sometimes be the only way to hold them accountable. That WILL mean at a minimum inconvenience on your part, and possibly even substantial sacrifice. Yes it sucks when we can't buy/go/do what we like. Yes it sucks when brands we trusted show their seedy underbellies. But if boycotting or complaining helps workers be able to live, work, and be safe in doing so, we've gotta just do the damn thing. This is so much bigger than needing to find a new vegetarian frozen food supplier. This is so much bigger than having to give up a movie theatre you love. This is so much bigger than taking a break from Etsy or Kroger.
We've GOT to step back to the big picture; solidarity demands it. I hope it's clear here that I'm not talking about, "If I do [X], my basic survival/needs won't be met" but because it's Tumblr, let me officially disclaim, I'm not talking about that. But I AM talking about the "UGH this fucking sucks I hate that I can't shop there" feeling and then NOT FUCKING SHOPPING THERE. Not easy, not fun...fully necessary.

beyond the fact that the last thing anyone should be complaining about with the strike is "but what new shows will we watch?!".... literally TAKE YOUR PICK! maybe we won't get new shows and seasons while writers and actors are fighting for their livelihoods... deal with it?? yeah there's stuff i'm looking forward to as well. but y'know what?? there is so much media out there.
have your friends whip up lists of media you should watch!
watch all the star wars things! the movies, the shows!
how about you watch the ten star trek shows there are! it'll take a good long while. don't forget the movies as well!
rewatch your old favorites! the comfort media! rebinge that decade-long show you adore but have never found the time to sit through again beginning to end!
how about classic doctor who! twenty-six seasons! all camp and wonderful! haven't gotten in to doctor who yet? watch the thirteen seasons of the revival! already into doctor who? watch class, or the sarah jane adventures, or torchwood (although caution is advised).
hell, do you like media that isn't film or tv? READ A BOOK! READ SO MANY BOOKS! GET INTO AUDIO DRAMAS! OR PODCASTS!
doctor who has the most expansive media out there go crazy go nuts! listen to the magnus archives or welcome to night vale!
and that's just a fragment of the nerd shit i could think of let alone more mainstream stuff. go watch the stargate series or red dwarf. watch the different batman shows. i don't know!
there is literally *so much media* out there, no matter what your tastes and interests are. maybe ofmd is gonna get delayed, maybe we don't get marvel shows (beyond the things already filmed) for a while, THERE'S SO MUCH YOU CAN STILL ENGAGE WITH
i, personally, will be combing through the five-page-and-counting google doc of media i want to rewatch/reread and media i want to get around to (all while watching all the things still coming out like good omens and strange new worlds and wwdits). i've gotten through nine books in a seventy-three book series right now. yeah! it's the eighth doctor adventures (edas) from doctor who and they SLAP. and while i'm waiting for these brilliant and hard-working people to get an iota of what they're deserved, i will gladly be reading the remaining sixty-four.
(also idk who needs to tell you this but fucking pirate. media corporations don't deserve your money and ESPECIALLY don't while this travesty is happening)

I feel really bad for people who worked on their movie or TV-related cosplays for months only for this to be asked of them now, tbh.
But here's a last minute costume idea: that executive that wants people to be homeless, the WGA strikers when they heard SAG was joining them, or just go with a fun picket sign.
ETA: Oh! Or Ron Perlman beating some executive up?

I gotta say, collage can be a trip sometimes (in a good way)
I started my first class today, video editing, and it was the usual going over the syllabus and it ended with the teacher going "Any ways, their might be a strike and I'm not crossing the picket line so I'm going to be staying home until then and also protesting with other teachers and students. Also, the collage has a link that encourages students to snitch on their teachers for not going to school/ are protesting and, IDK, you could mess around with collage, maybe put anyone other than your teachers names, maybe pull a Bart Simson, IDk :> *Wink Wink Nudge Nudge"
Also had a dude on roller blades roller blade up to me, say "Fortune told sister" and gave me a queen of diamonds card with the words fortune written on it that was taped to a incense stick.

It’s just WILD to see basically every major corporation and billionaire has apparently looked at the gray, soulless futures in dystopian media, where humans are allowed to express no creativity and no purpose other than to provide mindless labor... and went ‘yeah, that’s the future I want’
It’s also insane to watch as the INSTANT that AI was introduced to the world, it has been used to try and get rid of real, human creatives. (Continuing on this path, the creative fields would turn into creating things specifically to feed into AI to train it better, and not creating art for the art itself. Dystopia indeed.)

I wonder how much time it’ll take for film companies to do promotional campaigns where you can send them pictures of your face for the privilege of being in a movie so they don’t have to pay even for that.

I fucking hope enough people at my work vote no on the new contract. I want corporate to be quivering in their fucking boots at the IDEA that we would strike. We're a grocery store. We're a necessity for people. If we strike, the store will lose millions in just a day. They do NOT want us to strike and they're trying to convince us that striking would be bad for US. No, motherfuckers, striking is bad for YOU. The union has a fund to cover worker's pay so we don't have to choose between fighting for better wages or becoming homeless. For corporate? It's millions and we know the CEO wouldn't want to have to sell his fifth yacht or his eighth beach house.
Don't fuck with necessary workers. WE have the fucking power here. Pay us better or enjoy spoiled food, angry customers, and millions of lost revenue.
