On a recent post, a conversation about protecting food storage during an earthquake came up. This is a pretty good guide for options to implement.
One thing it doesn’t quite fully address is protecting canning jars. Sturdy and secure shelves with non-slip liners is certainly part of the solution. But as the contents shift within the jar, it could still cause rocking. Jars clanking together will probably break. So putting them in boxes with dividers, wrapping in bubble wrap, or any other method of keeping them from cracking against each other is also necessary. In a separate article, I saw where a woman had crocheted what amounted to a beer cozy for each of her jars to cushion them from each other. They would be easy to use, washable, and reusable. I’m pretty sure they would be inexpensive to make as well.

Every couple of years the New Yorker drops an absolutely banger earthquake story (see also: the 2015 Cascadia subduction zone and Oklahoma induced earthquakes articles) but this one has the additional benefit of an optimistic ending 😍
The idea of using fiber optic cables as ad hoc earthquake sensors has been out there for awhile now - I think I remember an AGU talk about it around 2015 or 2016 - but it's so fascinating to me because it's such an elegant, economical idea. We have a massive data gap in earthquake monitoring because, spoiler alert, it's incredibly difficult to put seismometers on the ocean floor. But we do have undersea cables constantly passing signals back and forth, and those signals have been recording earthquakes all along - in the slight changes to the way they behave that reflect the cable movements caused by earthquakes. The data already exists, we just have to use it properly!

"why do you watch so many earthquake videos?" / "Why do you have a hyperfixation on earthquakes."
Because The Big One is gonna happen in my life time where the Juan de Fuca Plate is gonna plunge beneath the North America plate and cause a huge earthquake that is WAY overdue
AND fun fact, people didn't know the Pacific Northwest was a subduction zone until 1988
So don't trust buildings here that are made before the mid 90s
Also with the 'duck and hold' bullshit won't work in most places bcs a lot of old buildings (ex. My school) might pancake depending on how it's built and your best bet there is to get OUT
Also Seattle is built on dirt that was filled in after the Great Seattle Fire so a lot of that ground is going to move/liquify and a lot of buildings are going down whether they were built with earthquake precautions or not
This isn't intended to spread fear, it's purely intended to be like, partially educational. I'm also just kinda spitballing here.
But part of what made me want to write this is I was trying to explain to my brother how bad it'll be and he started making jokes about "the West side will have it worse 🤓" because he GENUINELY thinks the only damage an earthquake can cause is a tsunami
Yes a tsunami will most likely hit the coast but places that aren't the coast will still be in danger
Also, thing about subduction earthquakes, you have time to react! The p waves arrive first and they're less destructive, harder to feel, kind of like a warning.
Then the more destructive s waves hit which is what caused the most damage
And if your a costal area, then shortly after the s waves hit a tsunami will probably hit

Earthquake-Resistant Building Design: A Guide to Safer Structures
In regions prone to seismic activity, earthquake-resistant building design is not a luxury but a necessity. The primary goal of such design is to ensure that structures can withstand the shaking and shifting of the earth without catastrophic failure. This is achieved through a deep understanding of geotechnical engineering principles, materials science, and the dynamics of seismic forces. By…

10.津波から7年後の釜石でサマースクール/Summer school in Kamaishi seven years after the tsunami

I assume many of you in Southern California stumbling on this blog have gone through Yogi Bear's Quaky-Shaky Vans as part of earthquake-preparedness instruction ...
(Joe Barbera, in fact, got inspiration for the concept when he was in Japan on business in the mid-1980's and noticed earthquake-simulator vans in wide use as part of emergency-preparedness training. In time, he was able to import several such into the United States and donated them to local emergency-preparedness agencies in Southern California, which uses such in elementary schools.)

Noticed something a little funky in the world around you and want to figure out what's up? Especially if there might be something you ought to be doing about it? Not sure what information sources to trust these days? If you're in the US, federal agencies like NOAA, USGS, EPA and more collect massive amounts of scientific data every day, much of which is publicly available online - if you know where to look.
A PDF version with clickable links is available for free on my itchio page (quakeandquiver); I'll add a direct link in a reblog.
