It's not the fault of the student who has not read Nick Joaquin, who does not know "May Day Eve." I think it's a structural issue. I think it's an education issue. I think it's a political issue. I think it's a government issue. Shame on the government. Shame on the educational institutions that don't move the Filipinos to read the work of their own writers from the time they're little. I grew up reading Philippine Journal of Education in a really backwards, teeny tiny river town in Leyte. Not even in Tacloban, in my mom's hometown Barugo, Leyte. [...] But in that hometown, people had, my aunt had Philippine Journal of Education. I would read the stories of Nick Joaquin there... and so many books were available to me. Martial Law really changed the kinds of books that were offered to me. From reading the Victorian Era poets, and [other] English language poets, and Nick Joaquin, we ended up reading stories about aswang... I don't know what happened with my English education... But I would always go to have generosity with the Filipino who is the victim here. They're not the ones who are perpetuating their own ignorance. It is the government that's doing that; it is the schools. And I think it is our job to have that generosity for the Filipino reader. To say "the Filipino is not a reading public" already puts the burden on that Filipino. The burden should be on the government, that should have a better educational system for all of us.

Looking at her(?) post, myrddin is the incarnation of the stereotype of the american who thinks their country only do good vs the evils other dicatorships. I saw that post not long ago where she was talking about rusame fans and basically she saids it brushed her the wrong way that people where making content about this meanwhile russia is a pariah/mafia state waging a genocidal war since 2014 (or before if you go back to chechnya and georgia). Considering she lost a friend in ukraine it's understable that she has these feelings. The problem is that it became very hypocrite when someone pointed out that she don't gave a fuck about the countries her nation had destroyed and the thousands of civilians merely considered as collateral damage, (so it was kind of weird to ask people to cancel a country because they do horrible things but it surprisingly doesn't apply to your). And she answered by posting an article about a russian nationalist killed and called the poster a vatnik. adding the facts that often she post about nato that she considere a 100% peaceful organisation (hi libya and afhganistan who were NOT asked by UN),Usa (hi MeNa/LatAm), that people who posted about iraq war where russians trolls (no way it's people who gets hurt by us intervention, huh ?) everyone who disagree with her is paid by the kremlin and because usa are the 1st global power they should be kind of the world police. It looks like she just is an american nationalist who doesn't aknowledge that her country is as much of a terrorist state as russia, and the millions lives who gets destroyed are barely collateral damages(or they deserved it, these damn 7 yo jihadist).
Sorry for the long post and for the possible non-comprehension, english is not my first language and i wanted to talk about it without being treated as a russian agent.^^'
Disclaimer: Do not send threats to myrddin ffs
The myth of American benevolence and American exceptionalism is a plague lmao. Yeah as someone who's country (Philippines) was directly affected by American imperialism and who's suffering under American imperialism is constantly downplayed because of the myth of American exceptionalism I really don't appreciate any mention of America's imperialist reality being met with "YOU'RE A VATNIK! YOU'RE A RUSSIAN SPY!"
Yeah it's incredibly hypocritical to get mad at people for drawing hetalia Russia art because of the invasion of Ukraine but be completely fine with hetalia America art despite... Everything about America's imperialist legacy which persists to this day. The U.S helped implement a racial hierarchy system in the Philippines and the affects are still felt to this day. American imperialism/interventionism is still tearing people lives apart.
I do sympathise with the fact that they've lost a friend in Ukraine - that's terrible. However that doesn't mean that in some sort of logical sequence it then justifies running around with a blindfold on trying to ignore America's faults.
I admit that I get annoyed myself when people woobify Russia too much because surprise - I'm not a fan of the Russian state either (I despise it) despite the vatnik accusations, and I've been quite vocal about my distaste for their actions myself, but unless the content is crossing the line into Russian (or American) imperialist apologia, it's just content that annoys me/is annoying at the end of the day and that's that. By their logic they should not be America posting then? They hate rusame art/content because of Russian imperialism but... Nothing about American imperialism?
But wait - the U.S and NATO have done nothing wrong, right? And anyone and everyone who levels well founded criticisms at them MUST be being paid off by the Kremlin, right? Including people whose families' lives, countrymen's lives, and even own lives who were ripped apart due to their actions? Right?
Their lived experiences = Russian agent now I guess.
The fact that it got to the point where myrddin defended what they thought was a Ukrainian using "Mongol" as an insult towards Russians because I said it was racist/had it's basis in Nazi eugenicist science and that it should not be tolerated, and accused me of spreading Russian propaganda of "Ukrainians being Nazis"... Yeah myrddin, you're just racist lol. The fact that they had the gall to make (really bad) posts about hetalia Mongolia beforehand too. The gall of it all.
Considering English isn't your first language - if you sent an ask into Myrddin anyways they'd probably point that out and laugh at you. Because they're like that (saying this because they've explicity made fun of a LatAms grammar before when they sent in criticism) I guess.
If you're so American imperialist brainrotted that it comes to that, please get the fuck off my blog.

Ok so the idea for dear emperor is that in schools (elementary school, not higher education) kids are treated like crap and are taught nationalist propaganda. They're at an era where people are vaguely aware it's propaganda so everyone dislikes the royal family a little. Basically, the school system is just absolute trash because the royal family keeps trying to change it to turn kids into hardcore monarchists.
Ira never attended elementary school because he lived out on a farm. He attended a military school and later a college, but those were both in adulthood so he didn't get the horrible treatment and abuse of elementary school.
Because of this, Ira cannot understand Edith's desire to change the school system either. All he attended was college and he's best friends with Volker, so he doesn't understand how Volker's family could've created such a horrible school system when they seem to be such nice people.
Because Ira missed out on this universal experience of going to school, he's alienated from part of Edith's views and refuses to see it her way because he's too stubborn in his belief that Volker is perfect
Sorry for my tardiness!
Ah, so an elementary school that keeps having to revise the syllabi to prop up the national narratives du jour? And yet everyone knows that it's just propagandist rewrites. It's historical revisionism based entirely on which narrative helps the royal family (instead of new evidence and interpretations uncovered by continuous historical studies and findings; these are two kinds of historical revisionism)!
Very interesting! I can totally imagine that. In fact, I don't have to imagine. Such a thing is happening in (some states in) the U.S., India [1] [2] [3], Japan, and even my own country. China has its own whole thing. And the Philippines has its own thing, and... really, I kinda wonder which country isn't guilty of this, haha. (I suppose the more pressing issue is the severity of it.)
But this makes me wonder about the degree of freedom in Volker's country. How free are the people to criticize the government?
Have they been free before, but are now less free? My anecdotal impression is that losing a right you used to have often generates way more resentment and urgency to act than never possessing that right, to begin with. The latter is usually a lot more slow-burning than the first as social movements.
Are there other countries around Volker's Country by which information, knowledge, and ideas trade? And I do mean free trading of ideas/the freedom of ideas. While social movements can be homebrew for sure, seeds of ideas have to come somewhere, and across history, these ideas are often cosmopolitan in nature. They are not "grown out of one person or a few in a local and never escaping it to other areas." Instead, ideas are traded across regions, cities, and countries, and they altogether build something grander that can then also be spread to other parts of the world—before assimilating and adapting for local needs. I ask, because Brandi specifically touts democracy. Whence did it come? The best and most viable ideas are built by many instead of one, so I kinda wanna know how an idea like democracy comes to thrive in Volker's Country. (Is it via some books? Some manifestos from far-away land? Some salons within the country?)
There are probably other questions that can flesh out this particular aspect. Why I thought about it is this: the target of these nationalist ideas is children first and foremost, right?
When nationalist revisions happen in education, the ones who shout the loudest are the adults who know what's up. Because these adults can read the curricula, compare it to their own realities/experience/history, and realize it's crap. Kids, however, are statistically less predisposed to do so. They are young and less experienced about the world than an adult. They may also be sheltered from reality—not a fault, because children are supposed to be sheltered in some ways for their development anyway (ex: who the fuck thinks it's good to expose children to war or backbreaking labor?). Their own history is also just starting to grow, being young and all.
However, since you mentioned "everyone knows the education system is trying to make kids hardcore nationalists," I assume that "everyone" does indeed include the kids themselves.
And how would these kids know that their education is shit? The most plausible way I can imagine is "because most of the adults around them tell 'em about it." But for most adults to be able to talk about these things would imply a certain degree of freedom of speech. After all, if only a few kids knew that their education is crap—because their parents told them behind closed doors or because they saw some events with their own eyes—then it wouldn't be "everyone," innit?
Hence my question above!
So yea, just some asides I couldn't help but pursue for a bit hahaha. I hope it's useful for your worldbuilding or plot planning somewhat!
-----
Back to Ira and Edith!
Yes! I think the backstory you give makes a ton of causal sense!!!
Of course Edith would think of education reform! She was once its recipient, and therefore easily projects her lived experience under the system to the the kids of today. She knows the stakes of education because she's been through it. That awards her the necessary sensitivity—or at least, it gives her the potential to be sensitive.
I also like how Ira's personal relationship with Volker while studying influences much of his reluctance to "demonize" Volker.
There is a bit more stuff in your lore that can also add to why Ira doesn't want to see Volker as bad! You might have already known that while conceiving Ira's backstory (he's your baby after all! Hahahhaha), but just in case you missed it:
First, the military school. If I had to imagine a place where the most cynical anti-establishment people and the most diehard patriots will be spawned, I'd think a military school too. Patriotism directed either to the ideal of "the motherland" or to the ideal of "the ruler/royal family" is kinda required to be drilled into all soldiers because it will be important for their job.
Second, Ira's transformation from an illiterate kid to a literate soon-to-be governor. I can imagine how someone will see this transformation as a second wind worthy of gratitude. Imagine never knowing you could be good at art until someone gives you the chance, tutors you, supports you... and then finally awards you a position to do this secret talent you never knew existed in you. I imagine that is how Ira could feel, and it's only logical that he would then feel grateful and a sense of "I owe you." And why wouldn't it be directed to Volker?
Coupled that with Ira's own relationship with Volker's nephew: I assume, for now, that the young prince is a lot more noble and open-minded than his uncle despite also being a recipient of the current education system. Ira could then justify that there is no need for extreme/large-scale/sweeping education reform if the same system could produce someone like This Young Prince. "If the system is so bad, then why is This Young Prince coming out of it pretty good? Clearly, the problem is just Volker losing his touch with reality. The fault is a few individuals and not the system."
This will oppose Edith and Brandi's foundational stance, right? "The fault is in the system, beyond just a few individuals."
----
Honestly, I really wanna know how are you gonna resolve this tension between Ira and Edith now! Will either one of them have to be sacrificed for the other person's cause? Will Edith have to remove Ira for her goal? Will Ira have to remove Edith for his goal? Will they cause a civil war? Will there be a compromise?
Such exciting scenarios!!!
What an exciting story you have there,  π!!! GAH
I gleefully await more Dear Emperor lore from you, brutha!!!
KEEP 'EM COMING!

Filipino* Hetalians are bothered by how vocal people are to criticize the US state but not CN. We only wished for others to be as critical, because Filipino Hetalians have been criticizing the CN state for trespassing — no, literally violating international law that was settled years ago and ineffectively implemented after our former president elected to court the CN state in the name of anti-US imperialism. The coast guard of the CN state rammed the boats of our fisherfolk — one of the, if not the, poorest sectors of the Philippines. It doesn't matter who you are, if you are in their way, they won't hesitate. Why they do this has more to do with capitalism than racism per se (even while racism is ultimately rooted in capitalism).
We're critical because WE DON'T WANT IT TO ESCALATE INTO A CONFLICT THE LIKES OF PALESTINE RIGHT NOW. The White House is literally intervening because the CN state refuses to take accountability. We are forced to invoke a law that most of us did not even exist to protest before. It doesn't help that they have used the military bases they built here as a jumping point for other wars (one example with the keywords: Clark Air Base, Allen Lawrence Pope, 1958 PRRI/Permesta Rebellion). What happens is we end up holding some level of responsibility for something we as a people did not sign up for. Then, we have to pay reparations but our taxes literally get pocketed, so we only further suffer for the sins of capitalist pigs.
But since no children have died yet, I guess it doesn't matter? Our government is debating over the reimplementation of mandatory ROTC for university students. One student was killed years ago for exposing the hazing rituals that have been normalized in the ROTC system. This is the same ROTC that obliges us into military service when the state calls for our specific names, only this time everyone has to go through it, and therefore anyone can be called on. Of course, that is unlikely unless there is war. Now put that next to our West Philippine Sea issue and you see the dots connect.
You would have known that if you had just listened to Filipino Hetalians from the start, instead of scrambling for excuses and copy-pasting racist rhetoric as a clapback to defend your victim complexes.
Nobody asked for you to explain your trauma. Nobody asked because we're completely aware and SYMPATHIZE with that. That's not our problem. That was never our problem. Your trauma is not our oppression. The problem is a neighboring government refuses to acknowledge and intervene in the aggression of its own resources. Nobody said iT's yOuR fAuLt ThEy'Re DoInG tHiS, it's honestly worrisome how people hear things that were never uttered...
But what are we supposed to expect when you have informants everywhere to keep track of any form of disagreement so you're basically a panopticon over the fandom that nobody wanted in the first place? Do Filipino Hetalians have to go into detail now about how we here are under constant surveillance from the Philippine state because any form of vocal disagreement will get us red-tagged and possibly killed as retaliation for offending the egos of those in power?
You demand we respect your trauma while irrationally labeling someone else's trigger as racism? Did you actually believe that would contribute one step closer to a ceasefire? Be honest with yourselves and think it through realistically: Did you actually believe that your online, inflammatory retaliation will contribute a step towards a ceasefire?
The honest and realistic answer is NO, because you wasted energy that could have been put into organizing on the ground. You wouldn’t have to get snarky about how you spend time helping elsewhere because your lack of training in working with fellow organizers with mental health issues indicates your lack of experience. Your lack of experience indicates you have yet to touch real grass and organize beyond huddling your friends into online harassment campaigns.
You don’t get to sprinkle disclaimers of not harassing people while adding #hater tag. You literally gossiped about me in your circle. You cherry pick receipts in your favor. The worst part is I’m not the first person you’ve done this, and I doubt I will be the last one. You only visibly condemn public harassment in order to wash your hands clean of your private harassment.
And I’m not even white, yet you spit inflammatory statements about me as if I was a white racist. Between us, who’s the Westerner to the other?
This is not about racism from white supremacists anymore. This is elitism, and we Filipino Hetalians have too much of that already. It’s elitism because you constantly enforce your intellectual superiority over us like some evangelizing conqueror holding dominion over the poor, unenlightened savages. It’s elitism because being Asian by blood doesn’t change the fact that you’re entitled to privileges not so within the means of non-migrants. Note that I write “by blood” because tying identities to the state is conclusively dehumanizing. Does my being Filipino automatically make me anti-indigenous? Does someone being American by citizenship make them racist freaks, regardless if they are also black/indigenous/Asian/Pacific Islander?
We’re as upset over the racist-motivated attacks of Chinese people because of the racist framing of the CN state as the source of COVID-19. We’re as ashamed of the lingering sinophobia in SEA. At the same time, we here in SEA are in closer geographical proximity to the CN state puts us in a higher vulnerability to exposure to aggressions on a state level. You could have also learned of our genuine opinions if you had just asked. Instead, you assumed for us. We may both be Asians by blood, but what happened to the whole respecting our nuances because Asians aren’t a monolith? Please understand where the nuances lie.
Elitism is also satisfying your freedom to freely speak of your traumas while policing the traumas of other people not shared by you, because the conditions you have grown under have instilled a hostile and ableist perspective for mental health breaks in general. That is the fault of the normalization of capitalism that every one of us must live under. The good news is that it can be dismantled. The bad news is having a petty fight with someone you dislike because they explained why they disagreed with your fandom opinion on the internet is not going to leave a scratch on the foundation of capitalism we mutually want to destroy.
Lastly, elitism is also the combination of residing in Western countries — all the more in the core of all cores of imperialism today that is the United States of America — and having a significantly larger following, and therefore influence, on social media than most non-migrant SEAsians in the Hetalia fandom. You hold a privilege and leverage over other voices; I mean, just look at how much traction the racebending disk horse received. As far as I can speak for my commentary — though I wasn’t the only one — we only wish for acknowledgement of the nuances alongside the impossibility of total depoliticization of nation-state personifications.
You speak of fighting racism, yet you constantly patronize the people from the communities you demand more representation of. It should not be any harder to realize the unappreciated double standards than the history of racism against diaspora communities in white-majority countries. I hate that it happens. We hate that it happens. But the internet is not restricted to the Western experience alone. The internet is not occupied solely by Westerners. Sheesh, guys, I know the US is even colonizing the digital space but don't give them that validation lmao?
And at the end of the day, this bizarre drama was never about the Chinese identity or the anti-Asian racism or the genocide of Palestinians. It was about a neurodivergent SEAsian expressing that her sudden quiet presence on social media is because she needed to recover from an anxiety attack that was preventing her from functioning, which includes platforming her support for Palestinians and other obligations in her every day life with sincere intentions. Understand that you are enforcing an unwanted power dynamic every time you make everything about you, again and again and again and again.
Understand that in creating a false rumor in mocking someone's trigger, you are establishing that the Hetalia fandom is not a safe space for the neurodivergent.
Understand that in creating a false rumor in mocking someone's trigger, you are establishing that the neurodivergent are useless, and therefore have no right to participate, in the fight for the freedom of Palestine.
UNDERSTAND THAT YOU ARE A VICTIM OF RACISM AS MUCH AS YOU ARE AN ENABLER OF ABLEISM.
THE GOOD NEWS IS THIS: It can be unpacked. Here are some articles on the impact of frequent media exposure to extreme violence. Mental health wellness is as much a part of the peace process.
Media Exposure to Collective Trauma, Mental Health, and Functioning: Does It Matter What You See?
Witnessing images of extreme violence: a psychological study of journalists in the newsroom
Media’s role in broadcasting acute stress following the Boston Marathon bombings
You are free to email the authors to argue about why dedicating time for recovery is morally wrong and a privilege that can never be a right. Don't take it to me or to any other Filipino Hetalian anymore, take it to the specialists in the field. Argue against the foundations of their profession. Shake them to the core, for all we care. Tell them how you think their works supplement racism because you want so desperately to be right about your bad-faith reading. Understand that your stubborn inability to hold others in good faith for once is toxic and destructive.
EDIT (01/09/24): Here are abridged infographics of a webinar addressing mental health and systemic violence, and organized by an advocacy network that works with indigenous communities and environmentalists. To quote them: "mental health must be addressed with collective care that is inseparable from collective action in solidarity with the Palestinian people's national liberation movement." If that still does not humble you, then accept that there are Hetalians — not just the non-migrant Filipinos — who are actually uncomfortable with your constant aggression and you just don't know it because you don't listen when they choose to speak up about it.
Now that that’s all said, take the time to comprehend how our pains now stand as equals in magnitude with respect to our dignities as humans.
*Bluntly, me and my friends and mutuals in the Hetalia fandom who are all non-migrant Filipinos. I don’t want to assume for others not in my circle, but I am extremely tired of all the cop behavior over us. This is not Martial Law.
P.S. Stop using “mainlander” like a slur. Not even as a joke. Stop it before it blows into full-out racism.

System W01210 booting up...
> Hello helloooooo~ Greetings! System W01210 at your service!(◕‿◕)♡
> Having a good day? I hope you are! Now, sit down and get comfy because I'm gonna be telling you about my favooooorite host, Miss Anna! Hooray! Lemme pull out her profile... it should be here somewhere...
profile.jpg opening...
Tumblr media Tumblr media
> There we go! Isn't she adorable???( ´ ∀ `)ノ~ ♡ Her sense of style is 1000/10, don'cha think? Bet you wanna learn more about her, right? Right? Of course you do! Cause it's Miss Anna after all! Let's see... her lore... maybe I should have used powerpoint... too many files!
lore.txt opening...
In her original world, Anna was a normal girl living in the Philippines. Due to some unfortunate circumstances, she got murdered by an insane woman that had a grudge against her father.
After she died, her soul met a mysterious system that wanted to make her happy. It has the ability to bring her soul to a different world and giving her a new life since her original one had a tragic ending. But Anna didn't want to live in a new world. She wanted to go back to her original one; back to her family and friends.
Unfortunately, she was already considered dead, so the system can't do that. It's the natural Law of Worlds - once someone dies, they can never return. But still, Anna insisted. She wanted to be with her loved ones until the very end. Seeing that she was adamant about her decision, the system made a deal with her.
It will bring her to different worlds, each with their own story and Anna's task would be to achieve the happy endings of those worlds. Obtaining the happy ending gives Anna points and those would be used to give the system more power. Gain enough points, and the system would be able to defy the Law and bring her back to her original world.
> Sounds super exciting, right? So thrilling! ...And very tragic.
> Can I tell you a secret? This stays between us, okay?
> ...I lied.
> There's no point system. Nothing could ever give me enough power to defy the Law. I just didn't want Miss Anna to die. I made that deal so I can show her different worlds, hoping that one of them would compel her to let go of her lingering attachment to her old world. I think Miss Anna knows that I'm lying... but she's always been stubborn... clinging to that small ray of hope no matter how fake it is.
> That's why, I'm glad that I found 14 Days With You! The world suits Miss Anna's tastes! It's such a good match. A normal world where she lives a peaceful life... and there's someone that absolutely loves her there too! Hehe~ (─‿‿─)♡
14dwy_plot.txt opening...
Anna views the worlds she's been to as stepping stones. They were just ways for her to get more points. She never bothered to get close with anything or anyone she met in them. She just needed to act, complete the missions given to her by the system, achieve the ending, get out. Rinse and repeat.
It was the same with the 14DWY world at first. Achieve the happy ending with Ren and get out. Which is why she picks the 'red flag' options earlier on, such as inviting Ren to her apartment and letting him spend the night. (She does not go into the woohoo zone however. That's too much. If she was going to do that, then it's with someone she genuinely loves.)
But over time, she starts to like the 14DWY world. She feels content with the life she has and that scares her.
She starts to fall for Ren as well, despite all his glaring faults brought to light by information the system gave her. Ren is a stalker, he's unstable, capable of murder, he's a dangerous person. But he's also the one that follows her around like a lost puppy with that soft smile on his face, he calls her Angel with such a happy and gentle tone, he asks for her consent and makes sure not to cross her boundaries - it made her feel light... and sick at the same time.
After these realizations, Anna closes herself off even more. She shoves her feelings aside and starts to act like a generic game protagonist. A blank slate, only relying on the system's options.
Once the 14 days are up, Anna prepares to leave - only for Ren to discover her secret.
> Ahh... Miss Anna... really, super stubborn. So I had to pull some strings~ Otherwise, she would have -

> Uwah! look what you did! you corrupted some of the files... ugh, fine. I'll tell the ending myself...

> Ahem! Sorry about that! Just experienced a brief error. No big deal~ Anyways...
> Ren found out about her world hopping and they had a... confrontation. It contained a lot of yelling, tears, and breakdowns... but that's a private affair between the two love birds, so I won't go into much detail. Though it did end with Anna giving up her butterfly charm to Ren.
> Why would the butterfly charm matter? Well, it's what establishes the connection between Miss Anna and I! That's why she always carries it around! And I must say, it makes a good accessory, yeah? Very stylish! Have I not mentioned that before? Oops. Teehee~ Now you know!
> Okay, back to Miss Anna giving Ren the butterfly charm. I'm in the way, you see? As long as Miss Anna has the butterfly charm, then she'll be able to travel through worlds. As I've said before, it's a fake ray of hope that she can cling to. That's why, in order for her to finally let go, Ren destroys it, thus severing the connection.
> After those events, Miss Anna will go on to live her life in Corland Bay with Ren! Happy ending! Woohoo!
> I'm a bit sad that my connection to Miss Anna is destroyed. I'm gonna miss her so much (;人;) I can still watch over her, but I can't talk to her anymore...
> Oh well. It was necessary.

As much as how the elections here is rigged, it seems so weird that people would rather have a dictator's son (bongbong) be in a political position rather than a human rights lawyer's son (Chel Diokno)
there's a lack of nuance to simply blame people for voting for the wrong candidate— obviously, there are many rich assholes with proper education who voted for shitty people, but we also have to remember that many people voted for bbm, sara, and everyone else under their hand, because they were manipulated by them.
bbm is rich. we know he handed out money during the campaign season and elections. the philippines is poor. a lot of people also don't have the privilege to be politically educated because our education system is unpolished by politicians who are scared of educated voters.
these politicians preyed on filipinos' vulnerability. many people who are bbm supporters are brainwashed into thinking this because of bbm's constant efforts to manipulate, bribe, and rewrite history. many of them are not doing this by choice, and as much as i want to get mad, the real person we have to get mad at are those who are rich and still consciously voted for bbm and bbm, sara, and all the other people under them. it's their fault, not their victims'.

one is distinct from another: me from you, you from them. Out of seven billion people in this world, I am distinct from y'all! No one in this world exists without a purpose. We individuals have a purpose in life. We humans are the best creation of god, and each one is special.
Hi! My name is Lauren Jay Simeon, and I come from a middle-class family in Lubo Sto Ninio Cagayan. Nobody enters this world without the love and support of family and friends. Actually, everything you become is solely due to your family. My father is a well-known Farmer in our neighborhood. My mom is a housewife. My parents taught me the value of time, honesty, hard work, and dedication to a goal.
We are two siblings. My brother is in Manila right now, applying for military duty. Being the youngest is exhausting. Not because I'm the only one who does the housework, but I'm rarely blamed for anything. I am the most responsible of my brothers. Even though I was the youngest, I wanted to guide and care for my siblings.
I am currently studying at the best school in my city which is the St. Paul University Philippines(SPUP). I am presently in class 11th STEM. I feel happy to be a part of this great school with good friends, helpful and loving teachers and sound school administration. Were my learnings in SPUP are vital to where I am leading to? Yes, because thru SPUP, I am able to acquire knowledge that cements my intellectual capabilities and veers my direction into where I should go—to where I belong.
I chose STEM since it is relevant to my college subject and also because I know it is applicable to any type of college subject. We all know that this strand is much more difficult than others, but it also helps our minds progress and prepares us for college life. STEM was the best choice! Reconsidering studying AE or AERONAUTICAL ENGINEERING in college, STEM is the perfect fit as it focuses on the field of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. These four fields emphasize innovation, problem-solving, and critical thinking.
I have extraordinary skills in some subjects whereas I am very weak in a few. As for my favorite subject, well I would say math because it is challenging, and I can always find new ways to solve problems. I also like the feeling of satisfaction that comes from understanding a difficult concept, or getting a correct answer. I love math because it teaches me on how to think logically and solve problems. It is also a useful tool for communication. Some people find math’s difficult, but I think that it is just a matter of understanding the concepts. Once you understand how something works, it is usually not so difficult.
Every man has flaws, and I am no exception. I am a little lazy in several places that I dislike. I spend a lot of time playing, which is not a good habit, but I try my hardest to conquer my faults. Everyone has a goal in life. Aim or ambition is man's inner aspiration. Without a goal, no man can do anything. As a result, each of us should be very clear about our goals in life.
I haven't lived much of my life, that’s why it's difficult to imagine my own unique future. There are numerous options available to me. I'm not sure where I'll be going tomorrow or if my mind will alter the next day or the day after. I can only hope that I make reasonable and prudent life decisions. Every decision I make has an impact on my future. I am convinced that I have a bright future and that I am on the right track.
I aspired to be an aeronautical engineer, something I had wanted to do since I was a child. Since high school, I've wanted to become an aerospace engineer. This is mostly because engineering is a tough career that will have a significant impact on the future of the entire human population. The implications of aerospace engineering inspire me to work on spacecraft that will advance humankind, develop increasingly effective propulsion systems, and develop aerospace engineering technology that will enhance life on Earth. But I recognize there are other more measures I must take in order to reach these so-called objectives. This involves finishing college, finding that special someone, and landing the ideal career.
I've realized that I've yet to begin my life; everything up until now has been practice as if I've been in a cage, and it's only now that I'm breaking free and doing things for myself. I need to work really hard to provide my kids a better future so they can concentrate more in school because without education, no one has a future.
Despite the fact that I have no idea what tomorrow will bring. I hope that every day is an experience and that my future is filled with adventure and love. All I can do now is concentrate on the present and plan for the future. Just remember what Matthew 6:34 said “So do not be worry about tomorrow; for tomorrow will care for itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own”. My future is determined by my decisions and life experiences, and I am excited to discover what the future has for me.

Some hot takes re: the Philippine elections and other stuff in general
"The elections were rigged through voter dis- and misinfornation, disenfranchisement and other deceitful means" and "Filipinos are uneducated voters who would rather vote for a famous last name than actual qualifications and concrete platforms" are statements that can and do co-exist
Our education system is geared toward making productive members of the economy. "Having good manners" and being functionally literate makes us sellable as workers which is why these are emphasized in schools
Sadly we conflate this with being productive members of society, which requires one to be discerning and critical. However, this is often seen as detrimental, and it is not encouraged.
It also requires a strong foundation in social sciences like civics, history and political science, which our education system does not have. These have been weaponized against us in the form of historical revisionism and red-tagging.
Internet literacy should also be taught as part of basic ed. Especially skills like fact checking, searching for credible primary sources, and using social media responsibly (which includes things like recognizing trolling, dis- and misinformation and reporting such incidences instead of just ignoring/engaging them)
Respect for elders and family members is not a reason to not call them out for their false beliefs and support of corrupt officials. It is the reason you do it.
Parents/elders in this country usually see youth and children as things to be seen and not heard. Thus their reaction to young people pointing out faults in their logic or mistakes is to lash out and say they are young and so, they know nothing. Even if they cannot prove that they are right.
The Marcoses should've been barred from any public office from the get-go. Local and national positions, elected and appointed, all of it.
Marcos may not have cheated the numbers but he didn't win fairly.
Fuck the Marcoses, fuck their fucking trolls, fuck their fucking supporters. I'd say burn in hell if I believed in it but I don't even believe in any god anymore thanks to you motherfuckers existing. I wish you all a very screw you 🖕

OPINION: It's Nut That Simple (To Choose a Legume Leader)
Tumblr media
Deciding what kind of nut to pick and eat could not find a greater distance between itself and that set of actions going by the adjective “easy”. With over 20 different kinds of edible nuts[1] and a mere 10 digits on the average human’s hands[2], this speaks to the arduous challenge of choosing nuts, as well as the diligence and prowess of man in undertaking it.
These very qualities will prove critical in identifying the attributes that must be displayed by the nation’s 17th president. Just as different nuts bearing diverse characteristics satisfy varying tastes, so do different candidates boast distinct traits that could solve the more-than-handful of the country’s issues.
Even the leading presidentiables stand to learn and emulate a thing or two from nuts; first and foremost is the ambition of an almond. Typically consumed after roasting in a fire, this symbolizes the red-hot passion and boldness to reach for a better future. Labor leader Leody de Guzman is one candidate who possesses a daring ambition to adopt a low-carbon economy and democratically-owned renewable energy systems.[3] Success in this will certainly help curb the dizzying rise of agricultural commodities’ prices which, in no small part, is the fault of climate change.[4]
Aside from just having the ambition of an almond, it is also prudent to look for a president who exhibits the might of a macadamia. Having the hardest shell in all nutdom, this represents firm resolve even when under exceptional pressure.[5] Senator Manny Pacquiao surely has such a trait in spades, declaring a crackdown on corrupt officials as his top priority upon the occasion of his electoral victory.[6] Among other matters, this could lead to a greater effective portion of the annual government budget, up to 20% of which was reportedly lost to corruption in 2017 and 2018.[7]
Indispensable in a candidate as well is wit such as that embodied by the walnut. Being rich in an Omega-3 fatty acid known as DHA, researchers have suggested that the nut can bring about a significantly positive effect on one’s brain performance.[8] Senator Panfilo Lacson’s brain will certainly be putting on an awe-inspiring performance if he is to carry out his plan to foster automation and improve interoperability among government agencies.[9] Progress in this field may significantly lessen the occurrence of incidents like the 2021 PNP-PDEA shootout, which left 4 individuals dead because of failure to coordinate between the agencies in question.[10]
The next nut worth taking inspiration from is the Vine-nut. Its fictional (Plants vs Zombies) origin is nothing to scoff at. Being able to block zombies as well as damage them, it is the epitome of versatility.[11] Ferdinand Marcos Jr. seeks to model himself on such an aspect of the Vine-nut by continuing the Duterte administration’s war on drugs but with an approach emphasizing prevention, education, and rehabilitation.[12] Perhaps success in this endeavor can ensure that future programs combating the drug trade will never again spill thousands of victims’ worth of blood.[13]
Penultimate among the lot of exemplary nuts, the Pine nut holds the distinction of being the smallest.[14] This represents how a leader should pay attention to even the littlest constituent details in chasing objectives. Aiming to enhance the local marine, tech, and manufacturing industry, Vice President Leni Robredo best displays the virtue of fastidiousness in her plan to strengthen Philippine industries.[15] Improvement here will favorably shift the country’s problematic import-export situation, with the trade deficit having been recorded at USD 4.6 million last January.[16]
Rounding out ambition, might, wit, versatility, and fastidiousness, is heart—specifically, the heart of a hazelnut. For sweet compassion distills leadership from tyranny, the 17th Philippine president must not be anything but hazelnut-sweet.[17] Manila Mayor Isko Moreno Domagoso seeks to espouse this quality in his proposed socialized housing program which will follow the example of Manila’s local projects for nationwide implementation.[18] Informal residences, especially in urban areas, foster disease and overcrowding.[19] Greater effort in providing housing will be key to raising living standards all over the country.
With all that said, it can be concluded that every nut has its own forte and so does each presidential candidate. However, this does not mean that each nut or person bears just a single aspect, rather there are simply particular ones in which they shine better than in others. It is up to the thinking individual then, to find the many different qualities of any one nut and weigh its whole character.
As with many things, it would be foolish to select for only one desirable attribute. That is why when choosing national leaders, we must keep in mind that the best choices are not those that put the biggest check on any single box. Such a label belongs to those who show an optimal balance of degree and diversity. Any path of reasoning and determination which we take must be that which leads to a nuanced and expansive perspective because any sort of logic that leads to anything less is, quite frankly, nuts. //by Adrian Mayo and Mary Rodriguez

that sadness of going almost 700K into a super-long novel before realizing, nope, it's not actually getting better
I'm going to be so mean and petty in this rant (but I'll be nice and not name the novel on this blog)
It comes down to the protagonist/narrator coming off as a bit mean-spirited and really not as smart as the novel would like you to believe, in a mary sue-ish plot will validate them every single time.
The protagonist transmigrates into an alternate history as a newborn shu-son of a noble family. He has all the memories and cognitive functioning from his previous adult life in the modern world, and a lot of his "wins" from the first story arc comes down him, an adult in the body of a child, is competing with literal babies and children.
The protagonist is a shu-son born to a concubine, and they are both not treated well under the polygamous system. However, the narrator emphasizes that his mother is a "respectable concubine" who is legally a free citizen, as opposed to a "common concubine", whose legal status is a slave. The narrative brings it up again and again (like almost every chapter) that she has some legal protection and cannot be bullied like the other concubines for this reason. It's feels like they want to both be an underdog, but at the same time want to lord it over other people who are beneath them in the food chain.
And then, most people are awful and not likeable. ("Nothing is my fault.") The father is a spineless and greedy philanderer. His official wife, the di-mother, is jealous, stupid, and cruel. His half siblings are either spoiled and shallow (di-siblings) or weak-willed and useless (shu-siblings). The other adults are only focused on their own interests. The only exception being the protagonist's long-lost uncle (who cares about his sister and nephew), and other teachers the protagonist wins over or recruits later. Basically, the only good people are the people like him, and vice versa.
The setting is basically a Han Chinese imperialist fantasy. The Ming Dynasty is toppled by a Han Chinese rebellion instead of the Manchurians, creating an alternate history in which the Han Chinese maintains control of Central Plains, and more. Japan and Korea have been made into vassal states after aggressive military campaigns at the founding of the dynasty, and before I stopped reading, the main story line hints at the Navy establishing control over parts of the Philippines 🙃 The founder of the dynasty is hinted to be also have been a transmigrator, who did all these military things precisely because of modern political sentiments, but still keeps polygamy system, and adds a law that forces women to get married at 20, like WTF man
And later, we go full-scale transmigrator golden thumb. He knows a an effective home remedy for chickenpox. He invents multiple types of ammunition. He is introducing arabic numerals and double-entry accounting. He establishes a successful "cram school" to help all his buddies pass the Imperial examinations. He places first in the Provincial Exams as a teenager. He is building a warship and giving input on military strategy based on his expertise from surfing on the web in his original lifetime.
The prose is ridiculously and unnecessarily wordy. The author seems to write out everything little thing they have researched and every tangent their thoughts went on to boost the word count. Some of it reads like a laundry list. A few times information is repeated word-for-word (copy & pasted) from a previous chapter.
One of the first chapters introduces the entire extended family and where they live on the estate. Most of that chapter is completely irrelevant because not only do most of those people turns out to have no role in the plot, half of those people move out of the estate (and drops out of the plot) and everyone else's living situation is re-arranged before they start to become involved in the plot!
The protagonist's mother gets a promotion as a titled madame, and we get a laundry list of the entire nine-tier ranking system for women along with the jewellery and behavioral protocol for each tier, even though only one is relevant to the story.
The protagonist needs a medical ingredient, and we spend paragraphs after paragraphs of trivia on Chinese medicine.
I can live with the meandering plot and slow pacing in this genre because I can believe that this author is enthusiastic about the universe and wants to explore all the ideas they came up with, but the effort that went into the technical aspects of writing is abysmal.
And it just made me appreciate who another novel which handled a similar premise much better: 嫡子为难 by 石头与水. In both stories, the main character transmigrates into an alternate history as a newborn and needs to deal with the conflicts in large polygamous households. In DZWN, the main character Mingzhan is the the di-son born to the official consort whom his father does not like; he is also born mute (though he is able to talk much later in the story) not a very good-looking as a kid despite his intelligence, so the plot feels more balanced.
But where 嫡子为难 really wins in this is that the cast is much more intriguing and likeable. This is by no means an idealized novel or romance, but most people are not going out of their way to act like a one-dimensional villain. Everyone is just looking out of their own interests, they have their own strengths and loved ones.
The protagonist is a di-son, and while he has conflicting and competing interests with his shu siblings, he still treats them like siblings and vice versa outside of direct conflicts of interests. The older half-brother isn't as smart as the protagonist, but you can tell he has tried his best and has his own morals and principals. The protagonist's father does not like him, but makes reasonable decisions in the best interest of the entire family and doesn't back off from his parental responsibilities. The protagonist's mother does love him and is super smart and well-respected, but between the lines you realize she is incredibly ruthless and possibly one of the scariest people in the entire story. And to this day I can't stop thinking about the Emperor and the decision he makes at the end of the story, like it's such a painful sacrifice but it's so self-serving in a strange way.
(Anyways, yeah, I went and reread a lot of 嫡子为难 recently because of that abandoned novel)

Article 1189 of the New Civil Code
ARTICLE 1189. When the conditions have been imposed with the intention of suspending the efficacy of an obligation to give, the following rules shall be observed in case of the improvement, loss or deterioration of the thing during the pendency of the condition:
(1) If the thing is lost without the fault of the debtor, the obligation shall be extinguished;
(2) If the thing is lost through the fault of the debtor, he shall be obliged to pay damages; it is understood that the thing is lost when it perishes, or goes out of commerce, or disappears in such a way that its existence is unknown or it cannot be recovered;
(3) When the thing deteriorates without the fault of the debtor, the impairment is to be borne by the creditor;
(4) If it deteriorates through the fault of the debtor, the creditor may choose between the rescission of the obligation and its fulfillment, with indemnity for damages in either case;
(5) If the thing is improved by its nature, or by time, the improvement shall inure to the benefit of the creditor;
(6) If it is improved at the expense of the debtor, he shall have no other right than that granted to the usufructuary.
The rules in Article 1189 refer to obligations to give a determinate thing which is subject to a suspensive condition. Usufruct gives a right to enjoy the property of another with the obligation of preserving its form and substance, unless the title constituting it or the law provides otherwise.
SPOUSES ALEXANDER AND JULIE LAM, DOING BUSINESS UNDER THE NAME AND STYLE "COLORKWIK LABORATORIES" AND "COLORKWIK PHOTO SUPPLY", PETITIONERS, VS. KODAK PHILIPPINES, LTD., RESPONDENT.
G.R. No. 167615, January 11, 2016
FACTS
On January 8, 1992, the Lam Spouses and Kodak Philippines, Ltd. entered into an agreement for the sale of three (3) units of the Kodak Minilab System 22XL (Minilab Equipment) in the amount of 1.796M per unit for the proposed outlets in Rizal Avenue (Manila); Tagum (Davao del Norte); and in Cotabato City.
On January 15, 1992, Kodak Philippines, Ltd. delivered one (1) unit of the Minilab Equipment in Tagum, Davao Province. The delivered unit was installed by Noritsu representatives on March 9, 1992. The Lam Spouses issued postdated checks amounting to P35,000.00 each for 12 months as payment for the first delivered unit, with the first check due on March 31, 1992.
Kodak Philippines, Ltd. canceled the sale and demanded that the Lam Spouses return the unit it delivered together with its accessories. The Lam Spouses ignored the demand but also rescinded the contract through the letter dated November 18, 1992 on account of Kodak Philippines, Ltd.'s failure to deliver the two (2) remaining Minilab Equipment units.
ISSUE
Whether the breach entitled them to the remedy of rescission and damages under Article 1191 of the New Civil Code.
HELD
The breach committed by petitioners was the nonperformance of a reciprocal obligation, not a violation of the terms and conditions of the mortgage contract. Therefore, the automatic rescission and forfeiture of payment clauses stipulated in the contract does not apply.
When a party fails to comply with his or her obligation, the other party's right to resolve the contract is triggered. The resolution immediately produces legal effects if the non-performing party does not question the resolution. Court intervention only becomes necessary when the party who allegedly failed to comply with his or her obligation disputes the resolution of the contract. Since both parties in this case have exercised their right to resolve under Article 1191, there is no need for a judicial decree before the resolution produces effects.

Week 027
I've been seeing a lot of posts about mental health in my timeline on Twitter (it's Twitter and will always refer to it as that) after Liza Soberano's statements on mental health in the Philippines. Many agreed with her statements and called her brave for it. Then there were the others that demonized her because 'she's making Filipinoes look bad'.
Well, this is what I think ... SHUT THE FUCK UP AND ACCEPT THE TRUTH ABOUT OUR CULTURE'S FLAWS.
Tumblr media
Why must we always present as this undaunted sort of people and just accept what we were dealt with without taking the time to actually take it in? 'Don't complain about what you were given.' 'Just be thankful.' 'After what's been done for you you still have the nerve?' I've heard that in many moments of my life---seen it on faces and felt it from people's actions--- and I've done and lived my life to please people I owe. I was a happy child because they wanted me to be that. I should always be happy child.
Then, I was overwhelmed.
By doing what was asked of me because I owed people my life and I should live my life for them, I ruined the chances that were given to me because they were not what I wanted. Even when it was what I wanted, I missed it because I was thinking of the people I owed my life to. So, yeah I ruined my life by living up to expectations.
I accepted that I needed help.
I attended therapy. Took medicine for it. I was open with my depression and separated myself from people to rewire my brain. I need to get me back and erase traces of others and what they installed in my head.
I didn't stay the happy child I was and became the depressed adult that bloomed from the happy child trying to please everyone. That's when I noticed a lot ---and really many people in my life--- just faded. They were still there, they just didn't want to recognize the honesty I was showing.
Some friends tried to stay but then they stopped making the effort to stay with me. Family hurt me the most.
They were hurt because of me separating myself from them. Not because I blamed them. I never did because it was my choice to make them happy. I just didn't want to interact with them because I was ashamed that I couldn't continue to make them happy.
They stood on this ground that it was my fault and that I hurt them. If I did in some way then maybe it is my fault but there really was nothing in my actions that should have hurt them. I isolated myself for myself.
I regained a piece of myself from isolation. Still trying to piece pieces of myself even after all these years.
I've lost them. However, as painful as being abandoned by people who knew me the longest to most of my life, I found the gems of living.
The people who saw happy me still loved depressed me. They never expected me to always be the sunshine in their lives. They were okay if I was the storm. They accepted the dark clouds. They held umbrellas over my head and lit fire to keep me warm. They kept their hands on my heart and made sure that it would keep beating. They love me without expectation and I understood my existence from them.
I'm living my life for those people. Not because I owe it to them or because they want me to. I want to live because of them. Because of them I got excited over things again. I want to share things with them. I think of things I want to do with them. I want to accept my existence and be happy with it. Living for the spontaneity of every day and the expectations of what I set.
I could take my time on living and they will be there to take or wait at my slow pace. Actually, we're taking each other's slow and fast paces. We just defined a different kind of time is relative.
Anyway, watch Lisa Frankenstein and accept the flaws of your own culture. It's okay not to be proud of it. We can be ashamed of our history and still love the country we grew up in. There is nothing wrong with patriotism. Let's just not delude ourselves into thinking the system is perfect.

Case Digest:
ALFREDO M. VELAYO, in his capacity as Assignee of the insolvent COMMERCIAL AIR LINES, INC. (CALI), Plaintiff-Appellant, vs. SHELL COMPANY OF THE PHILIPPINE ISLANDS, LTD., Defendant-Appellee, YEK HUA TRADING CORPORATION, PAUL SYCIP and MABASA & CO., intervenors.
G.R. No. L-7817, EN BANC, October 31, 1956, FELIX, J.
A moral wrong or injury, even if it does not constitute a violation of a statute law, should be compensated by damages. In this case, the defendant clearly acted in bad faith when it schemed and effected the attachment of the C-54 plane of its debtor CALI by assigning its credit to its sister company in the US. Therefore, the defendant is liable to pay damages.
FACTS:
Shell supplies fuel needs of CALI. However, due to financial crisis CALI failed to pay Shell and its other creditors. Thus, they entered into an agreement that they would present suits against the corporation but to strive for a pro-rata division of the assets, and only in the case of non-agreement would the creditors file insolvency proceedings. However, when Shell PH assigned the credit to Shell Oil, its American Sister Corporation, the latter filed a case against CALI for the collection of assigned Credit attaching the C-54 plane of CALI which the creditors opposed and filed damages against Shell for breach of their agreement.
ISSUE:
Whether or not Shell shall be liable for damages. (YES)
RULING:
Article 21 of the Civil Code states that any person who wilfully causes loss or injury to another in a manner that is contrary to morals, good customs or public policy shall compensate the latter for the damage. This is the legal remedy for that untold numbers of moral wrongs which is impossible for human foresight to provide for specifically in the statutes.
Another rule is expressed in Article 23 which compels the return of a thing acquired ‘without just or legal grounds’. This provision embodies the doctrine that no person should unjustly enrich himself at the expense of another, which has been one of the mainstays of every legal system for centuries. Now, if Article 23 of the Civil Code goes as far as to provide that: “Even if an act or event causing damage to another’s property was not due to the fault or negligence of the Shell, the latter shall be liable for indemnity if through the act or event he was benefited” with mere much more reason the Shell should be liable for indemnity for acts it committed in bad faith and with betrayal of confidence. Shell taking advantage of his knowledge that insolvency proceedings were to be instituted by CALI if the creditors did not come to an understanding as to the manner of distribution of the insolvent asset among them, and believing it most probable that they would not arrive at such understanding as it was really the case — schemed and effected the transfer of its sister corporation in the United States, where CALI’s plane C-54 was by that swift and unsuspected operation efficaciously disposed of said insolvent’s property depriving the latter, of the opportunity to recover said plane –to the detriment of the other creditors.
