Just outside sprawling Phoenix, a car-free neighborhood built from scratch has gone up, the first one of its kind in the US. Modeled after walkable villages of yesteryear, Culdesac Tempe sits next to a light rail stop and has its own grocery store, restaurant, coffee shop, used clothing store, gym, and plenty of gathering spaces.

The 17-acre community will eventually have 1000 residents, but no parking except for guests (the city of Tempe waived mandated parking minimums) though there is plenty of bike parking and free annual light rail passes for all residents.

Culdesac resembles a Mediterranean white village, but it also is aiming at “desert urbanism” to provide relief from the local heat. There are no cement sidewalks (using instead pavers and decomposed granite), white paint to reflect the sun and native plants to help create a microclimate. Culdesac’s Erin Boyd explained that temperatures on their walkways have been measured at 90F (32C) on days when the pavement outside Culdesac is 120F (48C).

While currently units here are only for rent, Boyd explained that Culdesac’s expansion plans include options for residents to buy as well.

So I love my electric bike. It makes getting around fantastic. But there's been one issue, there's a pedestrian underpass between my house and the train station I want to use. By law, I have to dismount and walk the bike while using the underpass, and given the ramp is far too steep to ride, this makes sense. It's a walking area for safety, and that's a good thing.

The issue is pushing the bike up the ramp to leave. Electric bikes are fuck off levels heavy, especially with a baby chilling on the back. Pushing them uphill is fucking hard.

I figured someone had to have figured out a trick to this, pedestrian underpasses are fairly normal in Japan and all.

Turns out there's a walk mode. That's illegal in Japan. Because, apparently, the diet is full of lazy old fucks that think walk mode is going to make everyone turn their electric bikes into scooters.

And I want to force them all to ride an electric bike now for ten minutes. You know, actually do something and learn about what they're passing laws about.

No one is turning their electric bikes into scooters. We just want to safely use underpasses! I mean I don't even give a fuck about the speed limit where the assist stops assisting. I can deal with that.

But I really want a safer way to get out of an underpass than using a hand to gently turn a peddle to get the assist to help. That's not safe, I don't like it, but given how steep the ramp is that's what I'm left with.
