Almost every automaker around the world is busy in the development of their replacement alternatives to gasoline powertrain inventory. So why not the Italians? And by the name of the Italians, we are talking about the renowned Italian luxury car manufacturer brand Maserati. Recently on the 15th of April 2024, Maserati pulled the curtains off its latest GranCabrio Folgore EV in an event hosted in Rimini, Italy. They have unveiled both the gasoline- as well as electric-powered versions of the GranTurismo coupe, along with a gasoline-powered version of the GranCabrio.
The Maserati GranCabrio Folgore EV is a soft-top convertible which is the electric version of the gas-powered GranCabrio and is closely related to the GranTurismo Folgore coupe. Both the cars share similarities in terms of their exterior design language and an 818-hp electric powertrain. There’s not much difference between the GranCabrio Folgore and a GranTurismo Folgore. Everything remains the same: the four-seater setup, the ergonomic design, and the powertrain options except for one slight difference the rooftop being a convertible and a fast Formula-E derived 800-volt electric powertrain.

It's probably time to admit Nico's monaco based youtuber days are over 🥲
in 2023 he only posted 1 video, 8 months ago. In 2022, when he got his rimac his videos popped off among car enthusiasts with over a million views (he was the very first! that's where the monaco based youtuber headline came from lol) and he promised a bunch of stuff he was gonna film with it, like drag racing and 0-1s accelerations but he never did. nicotube was always a passion project, he never did ads or sponsors. in 2017/2018 he was using it to find his post f1 career footing, those videos were more car porn, driving around in fancy sportscars, vlogs of boats or even f1 race vlogs and recaps, starting his own karting team (which kimi antonelli raced in!), and finally dipping his toes into sustainability with greentech festival. he started doing one hour podcast sessions with f1 and then other notable figures, which really popped off during covid. also doing f1 simulator races of every track and talking about the best ways/corners to drive and optimise the track. even tracks he never drove, like he did the sim for Miami in 2022, but not vegas. f1 is ofc his childhood love, he talks about the sport and his career fondly but even that with his sky commentary duties he only attends like 5 races, and no more race vlogs or his driver rankings of the season.
these days, his most used social media is linkedin actually. he's big on tech, startups, and specifically sustainability. esp with Rosberg Philanthropies where he's funding scholarships to phd grads in Oxford who research in sustainability and environmentally friendly tech. so making videos of ferrari car porn doesn't really align with the brand unless it's to promote electric cars.
does that mean his YouTube channel is over? no. I wouldn't be surprised if he drops another video whenever he feels like it, but the olden days of a bunch of sleekly produced videos every other week are long gone. he's moved past it and gotten into other projects he cares about and knowing the rosbergs I wouldn't be surprised if he slowly transitions into more projects where he's not the public facing front of it anymore.
I loved nicotube. i probably wouldn't be as big of a fan if I hadn't discovered it because it allowed a glimpse into nico outside of f1 driver, outside of sky sports narrative, just nico rosberg the person who is genuine in his enthusiasm of explaining how car wings work, who is cringe and funny and endearing and embarrassing. there's some absolute gems there. I'm sad there won't be more but hey, people change and people grow. 🥹 nico especially f1 fandom at large likes to box into unchanging, fixed category, like he was f1 driver til 2016, then monaco youtuber from 2017-♾️, but that's not exactly true and I'm acknowledging one of the changes.

What cars does Anne and Tim own
They have owned several different cars throughout the years! 🚘
Most famously Anne has owned a Reliant Scimitar from 1971, with a private reg. 1420 refers to her to her position as Colonel-in-Chief of the Royal 14/20th Hussars!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
In the nineties (and probably for years before that) Tim drove a mustard colour MG sports car, that might have looked something like this (it’s so tiny and he’s so tall how did he fit?)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
They’ve owned various Rangerovers and Landrovers throughout their marriage and Anne did even before they met! (Being farmers it’s the norm to have them to move things around the farm I suppose)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I don’t think they have one but Tim was seen driving a very snazzy Aston Martin sportscar at Sandringham with Anne’s cousin David in January 2022 (taking it out for a spin!)
Tumblr media
Then they have the royal Bentleys, which they get taken to engagements in, I think the newest is an electric one, we stan! (The heart eyes 😭)

Talk to us more about miatas. The sillies
There's so much I could say about it, but I feel like a nice thing to do is to start from Miataland, the wonderful place I alluded to in my kei car post (you really ought to read that section before this post) - or more specifically its collection, for despite being some half-hundred Miatas, it's not monotonous at all.
Tumblr media
While sure, there is some bit of "this one's a different color!" going on (which I definitely can't say I understand, but being a collector often comes with being a completionist), the bulk of the collection is extremely varied - not least because the above is just the first of the four generation the Miata has been sold for.
Tumblr media
Well, more accurately the MX-5, since that's the only official name that lasted all throughout, with the American "Mazda Miata" being ditched by the third generation in favor of MX-5 and the Japanese "Eunos Roadster" name turning to "Mazda Roadster" with the second generation since the Eunos brand got nixed. And every generation, known by the two-letter codes that represent the model in their chassis number (VIN for yankees) that span from NA to ND, has further changes within it!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The NB, seen left in the beautiful 10th Anniversary Edition, received interior and exterior updates in 2001, seen right in the rare Mazdaspeed Turbo edition, one of the extremely few factory turbo Miatas (leave it to Mazda to turbocharge a sportscar engine and manage to gain only 26hp out of it) - and, being more of a huge update of the NA than a new car, it retained the two engines, the 1.8L that many have because they say it's the better engine and the 1.6L that many say is the better engine because it's the one they have (though updating the 1.8 with Variable Valve Timing for, in other markets, more power, and, in the US, less more power).
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The NC did it one better - not only did it get an exterior refresh and two engines -1.5 and 2.0- but it even had different tops, with an optional "PRHT" electric metal top that further cemented its reputation as a big fat boat of a Miata, for its outrageous increase in size (two inches all around) and weight (up to 90kg or 200lb). No, seriously. This generation is actually extremely overlooked, so much so that Andrea, the owner of this whole shebang, only has two (which I do appreciate is quite an insane sentence). But that means you can scoop one up for not that much, and I do recommend it!
Tumblr media
The ND, instead, is quite the enthusiast's darling - how many cars these days get smaller and lighter with a newer generation? How many cars out there are no bigger nor heavier now than thirty years ago? Oh and also just look at it. Once again, a refresh (i.e. "The lights are 'new', the mirror's bigger, and there's a software update! Please care :)") was just unveiled, and you can get them in 1.5 and 2.0 flavor and optionally with the "RF" hardtop on the left. Well, not those two you can't, because the one on the right is the only example of the 300-unit 30th Anniversary Edition in Italy, and if you think Mr. Miataland can't flex harder on the Corvette dads of America who insist theirs is super rare because of that specific year (that is no different from the others) with that specific combination of options (that is in no way special) with that (random) color they only made 503 (and yes there's many people like that), the other car in this picture is a 1-of-1 Miataland edition. I should clarify: he didn't just make up his own special edition; Mazda asked him to make up his own special edition for them to build for him to celebrate his collection. Which, I want to stress, Andrea is not at all vain about. And props to him because if that happened to me I cannot fathom being humble about it.
Tumblr media
Hell I am not humble about having sat in this M2 (IT'S INCREDIBLE!!!! IT FEELS NEW IT SMELLS NEW), imagine owning one PAIR.
Which also makes an important point: the Miata is probably one of the cars they made the most special editions of. I mean, G-limited, R-Limited, S-Special, S-Limited, RS-Limited, SR-Limited, VR-Limited A, VR-Limited B, Tokyo Limited, V-Spec II, 93LE, BBR Turbos and of course the M2 1001, 1002 and 1028. And want a kicker? Have three: those are just the first generation ones, and just the ones he owns because there's some he's missing, and they're not even all the special first generation Miatas he has - because we've not even gotten to modifications.
From fiddling with the engine as per the supercharged one in the foreground or outright replacing it as per the 5.0L V8 (!) one in the background...
Tumblr media
...to completely altering its shape by way of changing bumpers and lights, as per this Pitcrew kit-adorned example...
Tumblr media
...to just fucking making it an extremely bad Ferrari 250 GTO... replica? It's so far off I can't even tell if it's sincerely trying.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And such modifications are genuinely innumerable. I could hit the image limit just with full-transformation body kits for the first generation Miata, let alone all the weird bumpers, side skirts, spoilers, mirrors et al across all of them!
And that's the thing about the Miata - it can go in so many directions and will take it just fine. That's what they mean when they say Miata Is Always The Answer (M.I.A.T.A.): classy old roadster cruiser?
Tumblr media
Miata! Get the Nakamae quilted interior bits and any of the plethora of chrome accessories and you're good to go! Barebones weapon?
Tumblr media
Miata! The existence of CarbonMiata alone is proof enough that you'll have no problem sourcing weight reduction bits. Serious track car?
Tumblr media
Miata! Even a stock one will be competent in autocross (oh right, we're trying to be accessible: "What If We Pretended This Parking Lot Was A Racetrack? We Have Cones!") and you're going to spend six digits before you run out of possible upgrades. Silly track car?
Tumblr media
Miata! The thing is so small and light that you can just upgrade it with stock components from bigger cars, and they made a million of 'em (not hyperbole) so even if the bit you're looking for isn't one of the plenty used in many other cheap cars it will still be in plentiful supply. Drift car?
Tumblr media
Miata! Obviously you can get drift modifications for it, it's one of the cheapest rear wheel drive sportscars out there. You can use a stock one or go as hard as you want, DestroyOrDie makes front suspension components that allow for more angle and of course every suspension you could want is available. Rally car?
Tumblr media
Miata! This is an actual 90s picture, they even used a couple for ice racing! Rock climber?
Tumblr media
Miata! Paco Motorsport makes a lift kit for them and the owner of the one in picture, Jimmy Has No Garage, also sells a kit they codeveloped with Godspeed Project, and that's just to talk about off-the-shelf solutions! Four seater?
Tumblr media
Okay, maybe that's a bit of a stretch. Pun intended.
And again, please note: all these are just the first generation.
The Miata really is an insanely versatile car that was so beloved all over the world all through the years that from the most outlandish to the most minute every part of it has been taken in every imaginable direction, most often by people who dedicated their lives to it. The enthusiastic curiosity it oozes has thoroughly proven contagious.
And throughout the years it remains determined to get to experience more adventures! You find a ton of them that racked up hundreds of thousands of miles with nothing but a happy owner to show for them. Road and Track notably bought one with some 350k miles and were, shall we say, impressed.
Tumblr media
(How's that car going now? Who knows, they put it up for sale after eight years and a car chase) Like I like to say of many old Japanese cars, it'll keep going until it dissolves. Its only real problem is it's very prone to dissolving, so look out for rust.
And now, since today is Halloween, y'all have a chance to scare me for good: I have a list of modifications I would do to a Miata were I to own one. (And have lots of money. (And lots of time. (And a clue how to turn a wrench. (And probably other requirements I am forgetting about.)))) It is an extremely, extremely long list. Like, over a hundred items long. WAY too long for one post. Probably too long for a chain of ten. Where was I going with this? Huh, I must have been thinking out loud again. Anyhow, here's a poll. It boosts engagement!
Links in blue are posts of mine about the words in question - if you liked this post, you might like those!

I feel like when you say you're a car nerd, people assume you're either into sportscars/racecars or, like... I don't know what to call the other category. Classic cars? I dunno. I just know that people go wild over cars that aren't currently made and I haven't ever really looked into the reasons why but I'm sure they make sense once you have the right background.
But anyway, there is also a third option? Because I just found out about the Kia Niro PHEV, and man is that a fascinating car. It's far from perfect, but it really seems to hit a sweet spot of market segments that none of the other manufacturers seem to offer (in the US).
Like, look. Say you don't have kids, you want a car, and you're financially well-off enough to follow the Sam Vimes boots principle. You probably want to have at least 4 seats in your car that are actually, legitimately comfortable for adults, yeah? Kind of limiting not to. But beyond that, unless you have specific needs there's no reason to have a larger, more expensive, or less fuel efficient (and thus more expensive, in the long run) car than that. If you can afford the upfront cost, you want to be able to do 80% of your driving trips on electricity because CO2 bad (so, PHEV or EV), but ideally the upfront cost isn't exorbitant. You want to be able to do long trips without borrowing a different car or something, so the range on long trips should be good (no super-short-range EVs, though these days they're all solid) and if you're doing them on gas you still want to be efficient. In a perfect world, your car drives/accelerates well even though it's fuel efficient, it isn't ugly as sin (though you'll likely have to deal with some "I'm an electric vehicle" styling, rip), and you're not handing money to Elon Musk.
The way I see it, we're either okay with a full electric vehicle and the limitations that come with that (I haven't looked into them lately, but presumably something like a Bolt or Ioniq), or we're not. And if we're not... then basically we just want a Prius Prime but normal-shaped, so you don't hit your head on the ceiling, and somehow without a higher price tag or a significant reduction in efficiency. Oh wait, that exists. Wild. I mean, I expected and would honestly have been fine with fuel economy in the mid-30s since you should be on electricity most of the time anyway, but okay, sure, I will take forty eight miles per gallon, yes please, Kia are you cheating on the EPA tests you have to tell me if you're cheating on the EPA tests.
So, yeah. But anyway I feel like when you say you're a car nerd you mean... not like this. So I'm never sure how to, you know, get that across.
(Aside: if you do have a big family and want to throw a lot of money at a super nice electrified 7-seater without actively throwing money away, the Pacifica PHEV and Mazda CX-90 PHEV seem like really interesting options in the absence of a hypothetical Toyota Sienna Prime/Toyota-Highlander-Prime-that's-not-a-Lexus. Another US market segment with a lot of missing options at the moment. Did you know the base model Sienna is a hybrid now, though? That's neat.)

Ah, @morkaischosen there is no genuine frustration quite like being a fan of the mid-60s British sportscar.
Unfortunately, I am that, and that is me. Noted car lesbian Doctor Holligay, Esq, Phd, fucking loves the mid-60s Brits. Actually my FIL, who’s from Leicestershire, decided he liked me based on the fact that we were visiting my wife’s folks in Oklahoma and pulled up to a gas station where there was an old Jag out front, and I look at Guy and go, “What’d’you figure that is? ‘72? Based on the grille?” Immediate hearteyes.
Anyway, for my money the Uk in the 1960s had some of the most beautiful cars on the market. The e-type Jag, of course, and everyone creams themselves over that era of Aston Martin, but I mean even the Lotus Elan, stuff that Triumph was coming out with, or MG,  is some of my absolute favorite stuff in the automotive world.
My dream car is actually not a super spendy wildass classic but a car that can be had quite reasonably (for the collector world. It can be had for between $19,000 and $30,000 USd depending on year and all that)
Tumblr media
That’s a 67, but I would take a pretty wide range of years. I will not get started on my feelings about this car but please know they are potent.
Anyway. The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, making God’s most beautiful cars. Outpacing the Americans in style if not in power, outpacing the Italians in affordability and manufacturing volume. Jaguar, Triumph and MG in particular selling a lot in imports to the US. Killin’ it. Should have been a major world power in at least the luxury car game eternally*.
Defeat snatched from the jaws of victory, it is!
How it all happened is a lot of speculation and some heavy finger-pointing and honestly, it’s a lot of factors, but a solid chunk of what it ended up coming down to is the UK going, “I am going to make a car that is SO unreliable” and, oh, 70% of the trouble with them is the electrical harness. Some of them you find now have had the whole thing reharnessed, which is what I would do if I bought one--frankly the things I would do to the car would probably cost more than the car itself--but yeah, chasing an electrical problem in a car, even an older one that doesn’t have electrical everything, is like chasing ghosts, and very difficult and costly to fix. The engines also are not great and the brakes are made of like, pop cans and dreams.
We have a guy in autocross with a gorgeous Triumph TR4, and every time he brings it out, the whole group goes, “Oh shit! It’s running!” and he laughs like, “Yeah, today.” It’s just a fairly well known thing with vintage British cars moreso than, say, a 60s American or German car.
And this gentleman in his Absolutely Not a Living Room This Is a Coffee Shop in the Orkneys was ALSO aware of this difficulty and we had a good laugh about it, and about how we were both born in the wrong country to have the thing we love best of all cheaply. (I assume you can get an MG Midge just like, on the side of the road in the Uk)
*One could argue that McLaren is certainly trying, though they are mostly supercars which is a slightly different animal but I won’t quibble. Lotus has certainly attempted, but they’ve never gotten the toehold of the Italians, which is a shame. I’m obsessed with Noble, but they have a very small market share. Anyway, the UK is not widely considered a major player in this game in the way Italy or Japan or America is any longer.

Audi announce new simulator driver as they take next step in F1 power unit development
Audi have signed Swiss racing pro Neel Jani as their new simulator driver as they take the next step in developing a power unit for their Formula 1 project. Jani, 39, is a former test and reserve driver for Red Bull Racing and, as a member of the Porsche factory team, he won the FIA World Endurance Championship in 2016 as well as the famous 24-hour race at Le Mans. German brand Audi announced last summer that they would enter F1 from 2026, when new regulations come in, and would be building their own power unit. They soon struck a deal to take over the Sauber works team – currently Alfa Romeo – for their entry. BARRETTO: How Sauber are preparing for Audi’s arrival – and keeping the pressure on in the midfield battle Plenty of preparation has gone into the project, with the likes of Andreas Seidl leaving McLaren in December to join as the new Sauber CEO while former McLaren technical director James Key will join the team in September. Jani, who has also driven in GP2 and Formula E, will now have his own important role to play for Audi as he supports the development of the power unit with his vast experience. An update of the dynamic driving simulator for the work on the F1 hybrid powertrain is also being run at Audi’s Neuberg site in parallel. Audi have signed Neel Jani as a simulator driver to aid in the development of their F1 power unit “I am delighted to accompany Audi on their way into Formula 1,” said Jani. “It is both an honor and a great responsibility to be involved in a project of this magnitude at an early stage. “I am sure that with my experience from Formula 1 and [sportscar] projects I can forge good links between theory and practice.” Oliver Hoffman, Member of the Board of Management for Technical Development of Audi AG, added: “Just like in production development, simulation plays a major role in our Formula 1 project. “Our simulator is an important tool for the power unit development. It requires a development driver who, in addition to a grasp of technology, brings versatile experience to the project, especially in terms of energy management in racing conditions.” Audi have also stated that, since the end of 2022, testing of a one-cylinder engine has been delivering “valuable results” for the development of the power unit. The manufacturer added that the continuing concept phase is laying the groundwork of the power unit for 2026, when the new regulations will provide for increasing electrification. This feature is currently not available because you need to provide consent to functional cookies. Please update your cookie preferences Explainer: F1 sustainable fuels The electric motor will deliver nearly the same output as the internal combustion engine and the 1.6-litre turbo engines will be powered by sustainable synthetic fuel. “At the moment, we are mainly focused on fundamental concept questions with high relevance to performance,” said Adam Baker, CEO of Audi Formula Racing GmbH. READ MORE: 'It's the next revolution' – Tech chief Pat Symonds explains why Formula 1 is leading the push for sustainable fuels “However, in evaluating various technical solutions we rely not only on digital methods. Know-how, experience and practically relevant development are indispensable elements of drawing the right conclusions from the simulation. "With that combination, we can assess various operating strategies at an early stage and pave the way for efficient energy management of the power unit.” Audi have also said the first hybrid power unit, consisting of the internal combustion engine, electric motor, battery and control electronics, is planned to be run on their dyno before the year is out. That will then provide the basis for the future vehicle concept going forward. via Formula 1 News https://www.formula1.com
