Hello, students!
Are you ready for another mini lesson? Today in class we will learn about something that doesn't exactly pertain to magic, but something that may help you understand yourselves better. It can also somewhat explain your wild magic to an extent. We shall learn about the origin and making of Souls. Not many know how souls are born, but I do!
Tumblr media
Souls are made most often through powerful events, be it calm or calamity. I have cast a powerful spell on you all so you may determine where your soul had come from and-
Well...I believe these aren't permanent. The last batch of mishaps have mostly passed. Moving on,
There are many ways to tell how your soul was made, and sometimes even exactly where it was made! I am going to use a personal favorite of mine, though. I have cast a spell over every student here! Sometime in the future a bug will be attracted to you. If you see a certain bug nearby, go to the guide below, for they know your origin.
-----
Apterygota - Your soul was made from something powerful in the Between. The Between is the realm of Monsters. Magic from these realms are wild and unpredictable. Your wild magic may reflect that.
Palaeoptera - Your soul was made from a catastrophic weather event. Magic from storms are overwhelming and strong.
Polyneoptera - Your soul was slowly made over time in the deep wilderness. Magic from nature is scary and beautiful.
Paraneoptera - Your soul was made from someone else's death. Magic from impactful deaths are elusive and perplexing.
Endopterygota - Your soul was made from deep space. Magic from the outer planes are unbounded.
-----
So keep a close eye out for any insect! It just might tell you something about yourself...

Might be a silly question, but do all arthropods have a larval stage?
no, arthropods like spiders and centipedes don’t have larvae and hatch directly into juveniles; and while the bulk of insect diversity is made of species that do have larvae, a lot of insects, like mantises, roaches, and grasshoppers, also have no larval stage.
the insects do that have the larva-pupa-adult lifestyle form a monophyletic group, the Endopterygota, which means larval juveniles only evolved once in insects.
Tumblr media
(from Wikipedia)
ancestrally, insects hatched out of the egg looking like a tiny adult, and kept on molting even after becoming adults (today, bristletails and silverfish are the only ones that still develop like this). at some point, the adult stage of some insects evolved wings, which is where molting stops for an individual (pretty much all of the insects you’re familiar with). these insects still had juveniles that resemble adults, like how cockroach nymphs look and live similarly to adults. eventually, the ancestors of the Endopterygota evolved juveniles that didn’t look or act like adults, which allowed the larvae and adults to efficiently make use of different food sources and habitats.
larval instars, or molting stages, are the same instars that non-holometabolous insects go through, but to support the complex development of a very different body plan, the second-to last doesn’t do much moving—it’s a pupa. a hypothetical exopterygote (no larva) might develop like this: egg, i1 (nymph), i2, i3, i4, i5, i6, i7 (adult). meanwhile, a hypothetical endopterygote with the same number of instars would develop like this: egg, i1 (larva), i2, i3, i4, i5, i6 (pupa), i7 (adult). essentially, larvae and pupae are just highly modified nymphal stages!
however, “larva” is a general term for a juvenile stage that’s very different from the adult. many marine arthropods have tiny juveniles that drift as plankton before growing large enough to live on solid ground. many crustaceans, like crabs and shrimp, do this, but chelicerates like sea spiders and horseshoe crabs, and the extinct trilobites, also have or had tiny planktonic larvae. these larvae don’t share a an evolutionary origin with insect larvae though.

METAZOOA HARD MODE
no drop down menu. WELCOME TO BUG WORLD
Tumblr media
[ID: metazooa, the cladistics puzzle tree, guessed in 9. The tree splits at bilateria, two guesses under gnathostomata: horse and tiger shark. And the rest under neoptera: locust. Two under endopterygota, ladybug and mosquito. Two under aculeata: honey bee, fire ant. And two under vespinae: wasp, and finally the answer, hornet. END ID]
this too is a kind of creature to me

Welcome the virtual representation of my brain!!
This is @soup-crime's side-blog for worldbuilding because god if I don't have a lot of stuff in my head and I wanna share!!
This blog will be (hopefully) well managed and all posts will be tagged with the relevant project name so anyone can find everything (as long as Tumblr allows jfdslagjds).
Most of the posts will be just me talking a little about any particular topic in any of the projects I'm working on. Maybe sometimes they'll be diegetic?
My current projects are as follows:
Beetle Island: A fantasy spec-bio project focusing on an island continent populated by megafaunal descended from insects of the clade Endopterygota where several human groups have accidentally landed and settled.
The Ibria Region: A Fakemon region based on the area I grew up! I kinda wanna see if anyone can guess where it is if I give enough clues hehe =:3c
Project Silver: My giant Sci-Fi project that is basically my excuse to play with the expectations of what sapient life could look like. Do not get me started on normal sci-fi sapient races.
Project Desert Rainbow: A desert populated by 2 groups of people with access to various forms of magic including medicinal alchemy and golemancy as well as a Heavily-regulated organization controlling a style of magic based on summoning constructs of light that manifest in a unique color for each person.
Keti: Basically I wanted a linguistic and cultural playground. The idea is that its like earth but I start over and build the entire history and culture of a planet.
Basinish: The future of the Western United States looks very different from now. Mostly focusing on the linguistic aspect of the language spoken in the area called Basinish but also some of the socio-political landscape.
Various: My catch-all for projects that I don't think have enough quite yet to warrant a tag but maybe someday may get promoted!!

Taxon Tuesday #2: Lepidoptera
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
“Lepidoptera” is the order containing butterflies and moths.  Well over a hundred thousand species have been described, making them one of the most diverse groups of organisms in the entire tree of life.  The first Lepidopterans in the fossil record appear early in the Jurassic, well before the spread of flowering plants.
Both moths and butterflies undergo metamorphosis and have a very distinct larval and adult form.  Their bodies are coated in miniscule scales.  They are key pollinators and prey animals, but can also be pests in human agricultural endeavors, and parasites to plants and other insects.
Lepidoptera is nested within the superorder Amphiesmenoptera, alongside its sister order, Trichoptera, the caddisflies.  This superorder is nested within the larger clade known as Endopterygota, which houses insects with distinct larval, pupal, and adult stages, including wasps, beetles, and ants.  Lepidoptera itself is divided into over 100 families.  I will not list them all <3

Brutal Metazooa for me this morning after getting it in two yesterday. The number of guesses is pretty high so I was able to get it, but neognathae (and the fucking endopterygota) is my nemesis in this game. I made one mistake (I didn't know crows and sparrows were in the same order) and it took me 8 guesses to get the order. I should just start using a hint.

almost afraid to ask but how many, classes? of bugs are there?
Good question! Infodump under the cut
Insecta is the class (though other arthopods could also be considered bugs - like centipedes, millipedes and spiders). Inside it there's the subclasses apterygota (primitive wingless insects - silverfish and so) and pterygota (most have wings, some.. it's complicated)
Inside pterygota there's the infraclasses paleoptera (can't fold wings) and neoptera (foldable wings). Inside neoptera there's most notably exopterygota (incomplete metamorphosis - grasshoppers, roaches, etc) and endopterygota (complete metamorphosis - mosquitoes, butterflies, etc) and another superclass nobody talks about LMAO. Those things change easily so it's hard to find a source on what the current nomenclature is
I don't know all the orders yet, but hopefully i will soon! It's why i want to grab that book from our university's library about arthopod taxonomy and write down all of them

Simbolo della coccinella
Tumblr media
From this flickers an adult who will have an average life between 4 and 6 weeks. The biological cycle begins with the deposition of yellowish eggs by females (about 2,000).įrom these emerges a larva that develops in this stage for about 3 weeks after which it turns into a pupa, a stadium that lasts about a week. An additional defense system consists in the total retraction of the legs under the body to make it more difficult for any predators to catch it. This insect uses stinking excretions produced by the legs and a very colorful livery in order to keep predators away. The common ladybug is a beetle with diurnal habits and the adult appears with the arrival of heat. It has relatively short and rather distant antennas. The garment has powerful jaws and is black. The legs are short both in larvae and in adults and can be completely retracted inside the body. The elytra are bright red, with the presence of three black points for each elitra, and one on the commissure, for a total of seven points (hence the epithet septempunctata). The copro of the Coccinella septempunctata is characterized by a strongly convex, ovoidal shape, with a vividly colored livery. It lives both in natural and agrarian ecosystems but in the latter it is strongly influenced by agricultural techniques with use of insecticides and herbicides. The Coccinella septempunctata is an insect that lives and reproduces in every part of the world especially wherever there are aphids, which are insects that are included in their diet. The common ladybird (Coccinella septempunctata L., 1758) is an insect belonging to the Coccinellidae family.įrom a systematic point of view it belongs to the Eukaryota Domain, Kingdom Animalia, Eumetazoa Subarray, Bilateral Branch, Phylum Arthropoda, Subphylum Tracheata, Superclass Hexapoda, Class Insecta, Subclass Pterygota, Coop Endopterygota, Superorder Oligoneoptera, Section Coleopteroidea, Order Coleoptera, Suborder Polyphaga, Infraorder Cucujiformia, Superfamily Cucujoidea, Coccinellidae Family, Subfamily Coccinellinae, Coccinellini Tribe and therefore to the genus Coccinella and to the C.

I'm trying to figure out my soul origin, but I can't tell what insect group a ladybug is from using your list. Please help?
That would be the Endopterygota group! Your soul was made from deep space. Be it from a planet being formed or a supernova, your spirit was birthed from the strong cosmic energy and found its lonesome way here to Earth :)
