(Cuterebra buccata, a gorgeous botfly which apparently parasitizes bunnies? So large I thought she was a cicada when I first sighted her!)

the feeling of being pestered by flies is universal for land-living animals. this Tenodera sinensis was finishing up her honeybee meal, whose strong flowery aroma brought over a milichiid fly, a kleptoparasite that steal sips of prey that other insects have caught. this behavior has earned them the common name of “freeloader flies.”

interestingly, honeybee scents seem to be strongly attractive to local milichiids despite Apis not being native to the area. watching a spider or mantis devour its honeybee prey is a good way to catch a glimpse of these otherwise elusive flies!

As tasty as we humans might seem to some species of mosquito, there are many other species that simply aren't interested in us! For example, the mosquito Uranotaenia sapphirina much rather prefers the taste of worms and leeches, and can be found using their long proboscises to probe the ground for a potential meal.

Maybe Pterodontia sp? I'd never seen any small-headed flies before, and there's only 3 Florida sightings in the family on iNaturalist. Absolutely bizarre chonky creature. Basically no head. Evolution can't keep getting away with this.
