Thoughts on relationships in PP
Baby's first post on tumblr. But also there's no one here so I can safely yell in the the void. Basically my 'do I ship it or not' list because I'm just a filthy shipper. Anyway.
(btw when I say 'relationship' I mean it in a general sense)
Kougami Gino Yeah this one is popular in jp, they are like 80% of all the doujins I've seen T_T but I get it. Childhood friends to colleagues to 'enemies' (with the lovely angsty flavour of 'his descent into latent criminalhood was a betrayal to me') to 'he's dead to me (but I still care)' to 'we know each other so well we just call each other out on bullshit freely now (but also are back working as colleagues who respect each other for the most part)' (damn now I see why it's shipped) but for me…..I prefer them without the shipping lens Verdict: friends/gen
Gino Mika Ah yes my 50/50. Do I love their little interactions? Plenty. In fact they give us so much little little Gino Mika scenes it's hard to not want to see more of them. Gino is the guy who deals with Mika like it's a given. Mika seems to prefer getting in on what SAD is up to via Gino (probably coz she knows him best, as they worked together) - given she can't stand Frede lmao and seems to not want to touch Kougami with a 10 foot pole. Also between Gino and Sugo Gino is the obvious choice. But I also like them as a big bro/senpai looking out for lil sis/kouhai sort of thing. So. Bothbothisgood.jpg Verdict: 50/50 ship and gen/platonic. Will take either way
Kougami Shion It's very very hc territory but I would be very very interested in FWBs KouShion, just sayin Verdict: fwb only (but I will eat that shit up)
Kougami Sasayama This is only here because I saw some doujin of them lmao But Sasayama had to have some serious impact on Kou's life to make him this mad about him being killed my Makishima. I like to think the suave punk Sasayama took baby Inspector Kougami under his wing and they bonded over manly things like booze and criminal catching. But yeah don't really see it as a romantic thing. Verdict: gen
Kougami Makishima Dgmw after that slightly homoerotic fight in S1 and the fact the series opens with them facing off each other in a way I know will have my fujo homies sitting up, despite that I still just see them as a good (anti-)hero vs villian with nothing deeper to it.
Verdict: don't ship
Kougami Frederica Honeslty I like to think they're colleagues who respect each other and in a way mirror each other (Gino even says she's a female kougami) but part of me won't mind if they hooked up in SS3, coz she's a hot woman in his house and he's just a man with needs
Verdict: don't ship ship but if it's on the table in a very specific flavour I will partake
Gino Akane What can I say, I'm a Gino fan especially with how much he's developed over the seasons, and those scenes of him staunchly showing his loyalty to Akane (esp the end scene in ppm and that Mika conversation scene in S3 that I've rewatched 10 million times) have me by the balls, but at the end of the day subordinate loyalty is a trope that gets me like no other (especially given they were equals to start and now she's his superior, you can't write this any better) but also one I enjoy in gen sometimes and this is one of those times.
Verdict: platonic loyalty only
Kei/arata (+ Maiko) Okay. These guys are like, 100% shippable, right? I mean the whole 'don't go where I can't hold your rope' thing, the fact that Arata 'holds' Kei's 'social' rope in the same way Kei hold's Arata's 'mental' rope, the way they go all the way back as childhood friends, bonding over shared trauma of loss of loved ones. S3/FI did a great job at creating tension within their relationship with their falling out over Maiko's involvement with Heaven's Leap and Kei hiding his Bifrost Inspector shenanigans from Arata and Maiko. Which brings me to Maiko. She is as much a part of the trio as they are a duo at work. Maiko's friendship with Arata just feels pure, and Arata doesn't feel like a third wheel hanging out with them. We know from that real badass scene in Heaven's Leap she isn't a damsel in distress. So while Kei and Arata are just asking to be shipped, because Maiko is lovely and also a badass, I adore the trio as a unit, she's a part of them, rather than a competitor. It's a really well-written relationship triangulation and I adore it.
Verdict: love them as friends, the brot3 trio.
Irie Mao Ngl their whole thing in FI was kind of cute. I just want them to go on a nice Enforcer-friendly date or something. (God the more I delve into parallel media the more I love Irie, to think I thought he was just some thug at the start)(anyway random Irie love over)
Irie Oishi The manga/novels really highlighted this relationship in a way that wasn't showcased in the anime. Irie was like a charismatic gang leader in the slums and Oishi looked up to him and felt betrayed when he left. Angsty shit, love it. But on the whole I see it as more of a brotherhood thing. Verdict: gen
Hinakawa Akane Little bro smitten with big sis, loyal to a fault. Again, the loyalty thing grabs me and refuses to let go. (Then I read the interview that said Sho was a bit of a siscon lmao)(still love him though, my lil druggie) But also I love the way Hinakawa strikes me as the kind of guy who likes to stay out of trouble (for the most part) but for Akane he will bend the rules (speaking to her through an illegal channel in S3 to give her updates).
Verdict: lil bro/big sis with or without the 'complex'
Gino Sugo Dont really ship it. But it's okay.
SAD 3+1 Most fav dynamic ever, love them to bits. 1000% need a spin off (the little omakes in the S3 manga gave me so much life istg) Verdict: LOVE (but also gen)
Division 1 found family-ness The best thing about pp
Frede Mika Fremenies with begrudging respect for one another. Kind of love it. Can't wait to see Mika's face when Frede 'poaches' Akane for the SAD Verdict: gen
Kunikara My og pp ship, way before I fell for ka I think they should get married and buy a cosy little apartment together and have a cavoodle doggo named Finn Verdict: SHIP 100000%
Shizuka Akane
A wildcard if I ever saw one. Firstly, they just look good together. Like Sybil would've matched them or something. But also Shizuka is just an enigma, I can't quite put a finger on him yet (the only thing I know about him is he lives to win, and has an interest in Akane's wellbeing for unspecified reasons.) I hope they reveal more about him in later seasons - he's a bit of a blank slate at the moment, a pluripotent little stem cell with a million ways of potential. He doesn't quite have the history that Akane shares with Kougami or even Gino, but there's enough in the crumbs we got from s3/FI to keep me hopeful.
Verdict: kind of ship but also an 'on probation' ship
Kougami Akane Ah, saving the best for last. Where do I even begin? At the start, when I was a wee 10yearsago-me watching PP1 for the first time, I was sucked into their dynamic. Something stirred, but it wasn't entirely a 'I want them to be together romantically'. It was a second, difficult to define, thing, borne of seeing the amount of trust and respect they had in each other. But also, somehow, somehow, I cannot imagine them sailing off into the sunset together. Like there is just no way. But also I desperately want to see it happen. I call this my Schrodinger's ship because I ship them and can't ship them at the same time. They have a lot of history and that in itself is enough to give me feelings, but I am left feeling conflicted about it. Like I know the creators are not going to remotely hint at any sort of romance with them and that's fine, that's not what PP is all about anyway. But still. They are just. So frustrating in they way they make me feel about them. ~~it's like emotional edging, help me~~ But also I will devour any fic, art, fanwork of them being romantically together or being that elusive third thing - not quite lovers but more than friends - in fact if anything, maybe the third thing is what I really wanted them to be all along.
Verdict: it's complicated (but also yes)
Wow looking at this list it looks like I'm more of a gen relationships person after all lol. Anyway it's all good fun. Sometimes gen is nice too. I will still be here for kouaka or whatever they want to be to each other. It's a private matter between adults after all

Thoughts on atemporal violinspector
Lyffrasir Edda escapes the bifrost
they refuel at hodmimis, and keep running from the destruction of the Yggdrasil system, but hodmimis isn’t necessarily close to the next system and they end up floating soon to die
maybe they do die and bifrost brings them back
mechs pick them up
maybe brian is like yo dying alone in space sucks maybe lets save this person
maybe they try to pirate them
maybe Story Senses twinge and mechs are like “we need to get this story”
mechs pick them up and Lyf is like, “oh no not you again”
mechs are confused
mechs have not yet been to yggdrasil system
misunderstandings happen
lyf agrees to stay on aurora until the next planet
problem: they are light years from next planet
(aurora canonically travels 1% speed of light)
oh no whate v e r  shall lyf do stranded on a ship with a limited number of people
maybe....... fall in love?
violinspector happens babey
so mechs meet lyf and get the story of the bifrost from them and make an album, and lyf and marius are now dating.
marius’s violin breaks/get lost
he is very sad
lyf gifts him eldritchly summonable violin to cheer him up
mechs stumble across yggdrasil system
they know that some of them will be in prison where lyf meets them
also know the story of the bifrost from lyf and have whole set for it
so prison trio gets to cause chaos on midgard
other mechs fuck around and find out ig
lyf is hacking into the transport police and hiding presence of aurora
remember having to deal with transport police hacks from the other side
realises they caused one of their headaches
facepalms
lyf also spends time gathering any relics and recipes and cultural things they missed
slew of heists some connected to prison mechs, some to unknown theives
but is really in preservation of the system
all the mechs help w this
prison mechs (marius esp.) enjoy teasing pre-rainbowified version of their partner
day that the train arrives rainbow!lyf sends gifts and warnings to their family and friends but knows nothing will come of it
sends letters apologising for not being able to save them
inspector!lyf gets calls from family asking for clairification on letters, only adds to their stress b/c they didn’t send those
inspector lyf asks prison mechs for help
marius gets excited, summons violin that lyf gave him, and starts to perform The Bifrost Incident set and gets shut down
rainbow lyf helps prison mechs escape? maybe.
inspector lyf escapes the bifrost
rainbow lyf and mechs take off to the next story
maybe they update album with new information
ends w Lyf getting closure/crying and comfort from marius

Good evening ~ Have you seen the latest trailer of Psycho-Pass season 3? If yes, may I ask what your thoughts on the trailer are? Also, who was your favorite character in season 1? (I’m guessing Shogo? :) )
Oh hallo thar! Why, yes, I certainly have. Admittedly, it left me quite unimpressed so I’m not expecting anything big from the 3rd season. If anything, it might flop as bad as the 2nd season did. It appears they are not bringing the old faces as main charas, and while it’s confirmed Akane and Kougami are returning, they have been listed as supporting characters, meaning it could be a short cameo. Since Urobutcher isn’t at the helm of the project, the writing quality is likely to be wanting. The trailer itself gave me some Ghost in the Shell vibes, esp. the beginning. From the looks of it, they aren’t going to pull a big villain here (afterall, no one can best Makishima at that department). Instead, a shady organization might be the primary antagonist.
I’ve noticed a few fun things though. If I’m not mistaken, someone in the opening mentions “Bifrost”, apparently (?) referring to that glowing golden orb – a hub of sorts? Bifrost is a notion from Norse mythology, a literal bridge that connects the realm of men with the realm of gods. And considering that the people in the opening are seen “joining” something, some network connection perhaps, it brings up a question who “the gods” are here? Could it be that Sybil is “gods”, and this “Bifrost” is a technology that somehow allows tapping into Sybil System?
Peculiarly enough, around 1:22 - 1:23 you can see a hellish wolf-like (or dog-like) figure appearing in the trailer. A monstrous wolf, Fenrir, is yet another prominent figure in Norse mythology. According to the myth, Fenrir eats the Moon and brings about the beginning of the Ragnarok (the apocalypse). Could it be hinting that the Sybil System will be brought down, plummeting Japan into chaos?
Anyway, those are just wild ideas. Still, I’m pretty sure they are deriving some elements from Scandinavian folklore. Considering S3 is just 8 episodes long, there isn’t enough time to pack lots of action here.
Aaaand, bingo! Shogo IS my favourite character. Sadly the dub doesn’t convey his charisma one bit, so only the Japanese version for me. I have never been keen on the characters that quote philosophers and literature non-stop, but Shogo won me over. He is a truly scary villain to my mind. What’s scary is that he is absolutely right about Sybil, he wants to destroy it just as passionately as viewers do, and with that, it’s easy to forget that in reality, he’s a brutal murderer. Once you find yourself agreeing with him, you know he’s won. His murderous tendencies aside, Makishima is a fascinating character with a lot of poignant ideas. One of my favourite scenes is when he fights gang and tells them people have lost their ability to assess the danger in front of them – that line rings very true to life. Overall, Makishima’s machinations were what kept me watching the show.

I hate people who wrote off Loki's crimes. He's so much fun as a villain and at times even a hero but only when he has to be or Thor annoys him enough. He's a bad person who does good things occasionally.
I was one of those people because I projected hard on him. Basically I’d reblog those ‘all Asgardians are imperialists esp Odin, Thor and his friends went to Jotunheim to kill frost giants so why is Loki using the Bifrost a unique type of evil’ which I still sort of agree with but now I see him as a morally complex character and I don’t feel like defending him all the time

Not necessarily a prompt (unless you want it to be lol) but I wanted to share what's been stuck in my head: post-Ragnarok, as New Asgard is being established, Thor shows up to some Avengers get-together with a black eye. When asked what happened, Thor says (quietly, solemnly) 'Loki.' A few people (Clint esp.) are ready to Throw Down until Bruce (who lives in New Asgard) jumps in and says no, guys, Thor kinda deserved it. Thor agrees, and the story outs: (1/2)
he made some comment (maybe blasé, maybe while in an angry moment) about how Loki doesn’t know how much it hurts to have lost the Warriors Three, and Loki straight-up decked him. Which is how Thor found out that Loki and Fandral were a pretty serious thing, for a long time. And Thor never even noticed. (2/2)
GEE, ANON, YOU’RE KILLING ME HERE
seriously tho i love this concept.
because like... I think in general, right, if we put fandral aside for a second, loki would be upset and offended at thor’s implication that he doesn’t care. like, as much as the warriors three distrusted him, even hated him, like... loki kinda loved them. and don’t get me wrong, i think loki most certainly had his issues with the warriors three, and undoubtedly felt bitter and angry that they would never really trust him, no matter how much he tried, especially bc loki didn’t have anywhere else to go--
but the warriors three and he fought side by side for nearly as long as thor and loki together. that’s a long-standing relationship.
and just the fact that thor would have the gall to claim loki wouldn’t care would make loki so angry he wouldn’t be able to function. he would be furious and upset and would like, straight up lose it.
but then. then, you have the added grief. fandral. not just a shield mate he had a complicated relationship with, not just another warrior loki prickled and argued with, but a lover - a lover he gave up when he fell from the bifrost, and a lover he was probs reuinted with after TDW (bc lbr, fandral wouldn’t fall for gay ass odin shit for a hot minute)
especially if it comes off the back of loki’s survival on sakaar, which necessitated his whole dealing with the grandmaster, like... loki’s gone through enough trying to survive on sakaar without thor acting as if he’s the only person to lose anything.
and of all the things to lose, like... to lose fandral. not content with ripping his mother from him, not content with setting odin adrift on the stars, not content with even tearing loki’s very bloodline from him, and revealing him as a different monster entirely--
now, fandral.
the universe leaves him with just thor - thor, who acts as if he’s the only one to ever lose somebody.
loki would be absolutely shattered by it, i think, and i think he and thor would really have a hard time kinda acting normal around each other afterwards, bc loki’s grief is raw and open and ugly, and thor wants to connect to him about it, but when loki’s in pain, he doesn’t want to connect with anybody. i think they’re very different in that way - loki isolates where thor tries to connect.

5 headcanons meme #1
Sifki AU where Ullr was born before the first Thor movie - @gaslightgallows
and an anon asked:   How about au where Sif and Loki were together during the events of Thor?
These are basically the same, so I’ll answer them together. First, as a note, I did sorta write this: The Littlest Star, is an AU where Loki&Sif have a one-night stand before Thor(2011) and Ullr is born after Loki falls off the Bifrost.
In general, I see this as ...quite a happy ‘verse.
Specifics:
1. I think a ‘verse where they’re already together and especially with a child, would have to be a more contented Loki, first of all. Partly because it’s pretty clear Sif wouldn’t put up with him otherwise, and also because I think an earlier outside form of validation, such as someone distinctly choosing him over Thor (esp adding in a popular headcanons that Sif was always sort of ‘intended’ for Thor) would help him recognize his own value. I mean, he’d always be the second bro, but at least he’s got a family of his own (and Thor doesn’t) that takes the sting out of it, a bit.
2. Additionally, because I also headcanon that Loki’s actual bloodline would appear in any child, he must find out earlier. So when Odin and Frigga tell him, either he freaked out or not, but at this point he’s come to some acceptance. He still won’t like it, but learning the truth earlier and having help to deal with it, would help a lot push him down the road past the self-loathing/disgust stage. So another plus.
3. Because Sif is still a warrior, she often goes adventuring with Thor. Sometimes Loki goes with and Frigga dotes on her grandbaby, but other times he stays in Asgard with Ullr.
4. Thor is, at this time, still reckless, and Loki doubts he’ll be a decent king. But because Loki’s more responsible in this ‘verse (and because he knows Asgard’s throne won’t be his, and yes, occasionally he get s little bitter that adopted sons aren’t heirs), Odin also has him do more of the day-to-day, which Loki finds pretty boring, but he does it. That eases some of Odin’s concern that the boys will be prepared, plus it’s not such a strain trying to keep it all running himself, so he’s not so anxious to hand it all to Thor right away. Loki is trying to convince Odin to let the other Realms govern themselves more (Odin listens to this, hiding his relief that this black-and-green clad child opposes conquest, but shush that’s still a secret he wants to put off, preferably forever).
5. Loki wants nothing to do with Jotunheim, or Laufey. But Odin still has dreams that both his sons will rule, and first stage of his plan is to have Loki to negotiate a true peace with Jotunheim. He goes, Sif at his side with the W3 and Thor as backup and to learn. Loki’s not very impressed with his first view of Jotunheim, but he doesn’t hate it either, to his surprise.
Thor acts impulsively to an insult and there’s very nearly a war and really I should just write the rest, because it’s now a story in my head and *shakes fists at you people*. HOW DARE U.

so I saw Thor: Ragnarok!
as always, spoilers under the cut as I give my initial thoughts.
SO
WOW
That was an awesome movie. I wouldn’t rank it my number one, but definitely in top 5 I think. Ok, where to start, where to start...
The cinematography. Good stuff. I like what Taika Waititi brought to the table aesthetically. A real crowning moment for me was Valkyrie’s flashback - that was absolutely stunning, the best shot of the whole film to me. All I could see in my mind was Asgårdsreien, Odin’s Hunt. Truly beautiful. An interesting thing that stuck out to me also, neither good nor bad per se but, the lack of extreme closeups. Were there any, actually? That showed just part of the face? I suppose the Hulk had a few, maybe one for Thor summoning his powers. But the lighting in the film would have looked phenomenal on like, some silhouettes of Loki or Hela. I want the closeups man, give them to me.
The Plot. Lot to say here. So obviously, this is not the Ragnarok of legend. At all. While some of the key players were there (Baldr?? Where art thou?) and some of the principles remained, they really took it in a different direction. I’m ambivalent on that. If they had stuck to the real apocalyptic Ragnarok, the comedy aspect they worked into the film would not have fit whatsoever. It would have been Winter Soldier, not Guardians of the Galaxy. Can’t really have both. Because the real Ragnarok would have been extremely dark and sad and serious, with all our favs dying bloody, the world being destroyed, and probably a lot of slow-mo shots of Jormungandr’s gaping maw and dripping fangs descending upon the Aesir, etc etc. It would have been awesome ngl. But utterly out of place with that comedy. They went for a more lighthearted, less dire version of events - while the in-universe situation was dire for Thor and kin, I... didn’t feel it emotionally. Not saying that’s good or bad. There were no moments in the movie I felt real suspense, or that I shed any tears. There was no Loki dying in Thor’s arms, or Frigga getting stabbed, no startling turn of event situations that tugged at your heartstrings apart from a few mild melancholy Thor and Loki brother interactions. I suppose if you went into the film expecting those scenes, you may be a bit disappointed. A lighthearted apocalypse seems like something of a contradiction, and yet they pulled it off fairly well, and I think worked better if you dropped the context of real Norse myth Ragnarok or any Marvel comic Ragnarok and just experienced the film for what it was.
This whole atmosphere they went with is, I’m sure, a response to the success of films like GOTG (colorful space comedy) vs Civil War or Ultron (gritty uber-serious graytone manpain). But even GOTG had scenes that were far more serious and emotional - I cried a hell of a lot during GOTG2 - despite also having scenes that were further on the funny/raunchy spectrum. They struck a perfect, surprising balance with GOTG that made you feel almost every emotion possible in the span of two hours - this Thor film tried to be more muted on either end. They really downplayed the lasting enmity between Thor and Loki, the fear and sorrow associated with the literal end of their world (esp by the common folk), and Odin’s death. Like, seriously, Thor or Loki didn’t even mourn or cry at their father’s death? I would have liked to see some scenes of Thor trying to cope with that. Any scenes at all showing some emotional vulnerability or struggle, by any of the characters - Valkyrie was really the only one who got that.
Now, seriously, I’m not saying I didn’t enjoy the film - I did!! I really liked that they added some comedy to Thor’s character, because the last two Thor films didn’t give him much character at all. This made him more charismatic and relatable. And I do love Loki in this. I am 1000% here for them being brothers and not focusing on them constantly at war with each other - what Thor said, about, at the end of the day, I’m me and you’re you, is I think really the heart of it. They’re brothers, but they’re fundamentally different, and that’s ok. Loki will always be a trickster, he’ll sometimes betray Thor, but that’s just his role, and Thor doesn’t have to hate him for it. So I’m glad they had that relationship in this film, and Loki got a lot of great scenes. But yes, again I’ll say there wasn’t much emotional turmoil by anyone in the film, likely because it was all focused on the big bad, the time for feelings is later, yadda yadda. But there is still a lot to work out, and I hope they eventually do.
Other notes -
Is the Grandmaster the brother of the Collector? I feel like he is. Having him in the film gave off such a GOTG vibe, gosh.
SO THEY MADE HELA THEIR BROTHER INSTEAD OF LOKI’S DAUGHTER TO DODGE THAT BULLET LMAO
NO ROMANTIC SUBPLOTS, OH MY GOD, BLESS YOU
So much was changed from the trailers! Thor losing his eye was definitely not in the equivalent trailer scene from the Bifrost.
Some of the green screen was... not great, I feel. It was really obvious at times. A little surprised by that. Knowing that they changed an entire scene with Hela (from the city to the cliffside in Norway) made me wonder what was going on in the editors room that they made so many major changes and possibly had to redo the greenscreen vfx at the last minute?
THEY KILLED OFF VOLSTAG, HOGUN, AND FANDRAL JUST LIKE THAT, WHAT
The fact that Thor knew it was Loki disguised as Odin and just let it go on for that long..? And so few people were startled by it?
Idk a few reactions I thought were just not as grave or extreme as they realistically should have been.
Bruce, COME BACK TO US
Surtur’s voice was weird tbh, they should have put some filter on it to make it sound like it was coming from a rock/fire being
I just want to say that I listened to Amon Amarth’s Surtur Rising before the film because how could I not
Hmmm that’s all I can think of right now. Thoughts? I’m assuming it was Thanos’s ship in the PCS there?
I did like the film a lot. Despite my complaining. I’m just a perfectionist. I’m not really settled in my mind of how I think they should have treated that plotline. There’s a lot of potential with something as big as Ragnarok, and they downplayed it as much as possible. It worked in its own way, but man, it could have been huge.
Overall? Maybe an A-?

Nine Worlds 2017
So, Nine Worlds happened this weekend.
It’s a lovely con full of enthusiastic geeks being enthusiastic about things. “We are founded on the belief that geekdom should not be restricted by class, age, gender, sexuality, disability, ethnicity, or the ability to cite Wookiepedia in arguments.”
And Nine Worlds is a bit weird for me. I feel more disabled there than in most places, because I push myself more, have less down time and react in ways that are rare for me in everyday life. (Thank you friends who dealt with my silence on Saturday night). At the same time my disabilities feel like much less of a big deal. Accessible seating is abundant, the quiet room is the loveliest place, and the hotel is filled with awesome disabled people.
(If you’re running anything, ever please do consider their accessibility and harassment policies).
My Nine Worlds is pretty academic. I like to come away with a years’ worth of reading, and ideas to apply to my studies & volunteer work. Your Nine Worlds could be full of games and fandoms and sing-a-longs. Nine Worlds is great.
Right, now on to things I have notes about. Feel free to ask me about these things.
The use of British Values as an anti-terrorism measure in schools.
Important take-away: the government defines extremism as “vocal or active opposition to fundamental British values, including democracy, the rule of law, individual liberty and mutual respect and tolerance of different faiths and beliefs. We also include in our definition of extremism calls for the death of members of our armed forces”.
Police and the supernatural in Rivers of London and Shadow Police.
Peter Grant as a ‘gobby probby’, the byzantine structures of the Met, the police mind-set (and the smell of police stations) plus a couple of great anecdotes. (I love Nine Worlds for these).
Alternative roles for women in west African history.
Warrior Queens are great, but what about the administrators, traders, murderous concubines? I have a list of names to google. Here’s the speaker’s blog:  cosmicyoruba.xyz
Security and privacy for activists.
A slightly weird experience for non-techy me, with a reminder at the start not to incriminate anyone. Interesting ideas about strategy, the GDPR, dealing with the ‘angry-ex problem’, machine hygiene, and using Tor & VPNs.
History’s forgotten heroes.
One of my favourite panels. Four interesting  people telling us about other interesting people. Sophia Duleep Singh, a suffragette. Tutankhamun (not through the lens of Howard Carter). Irene Harand, human rights and antisemitism activist. Sayyida al-Hurra, city ruler and pirate queen. Regina Jonas, first ordained woman Rabbi, in Berlin 1935.
Designing an escape room.
So many ideas. ‘How do you want the players to feel?’ driving decisions from puzzle choice to the colour grading (a la films) of your set.
Truth or fact in historical fiction.
I have book recs. The tricky subject of balancing historical mindsets and characters people want to read about. Bone-deep authenticity & emotional truths. The implausibly liberal Spencean Philanthropists. What do we think it’s important to get right?- Material culture/weapons specs vs. nature of society. Black Sails is highly recommended.
Education in childrens’ fantasy.
Based on social constructivism & social learning. Hogwarts’ teachers are awful apart from Lupin (and Harry). On the Discworld education has to be grounded in society (as the Witches do) or it’s useless & ridiculous (like the Wizards). Academics in the room recognise Unseen University well.
Game design principles to reduce player toxicity.
A thought provoking talk, with references here: https://www.dropbox.com/s/bko7bz6rct7q6vc/Screenshot%202017-08-06%2015.26.36.png?dl=0
The finding that is isn’t really a small group of terrible players, but most players having an occasional bad day & taking it out on others was really important.
Robots, AI & the labour market
Some people with a grounding in economics! Hooray! Only the latest wave of globalization. Consider industrial revolution. Automation changes the value of labour (incl. in a Marxist sense). Tech as a multiplier of labour rather than a replacement. Work is a gas, it expands in a vacuum. But also the cultural “myth of full employment”- will prevent us building an economy of creators? Machine learning and algorithms we can’t explain. Many mentions of Peter Bretts’ Blind Sight (contains torture) and Frederick Pohl’s The Midas Plague.
Miss Fisher!
Isn’t Miss Fisher’s Murder Mysteries good? Recommendation of Razor by Larry Writer for true crime in 1920s-30s Sydney.
Plus fantastic entertainment at the Bifrost cabaret (esp. filks from @A_Mere_Kat (your Night Vale tribute <3, and the genius of Starklife) and Runesmith’s 1980s microprocessor problems to Bonny ship the diamond), and @websterpoet and his excellent show ‘Poor life choices’.
