Former Life:

Phil is a half-breed from Nottingham with little interest in anything other than video games and nerd stuff. He thinks magic is great, but he doesn't understand why wizards and witches don't use electricity. He lives with his parents in a cozy house just outside of town. His father is a wizard and his mother is a muggle. Phil has no siblings.

As mentioned above, Phil's biggest passions are video games and J-culture. Accordingly, he speaks a lot of nerds, so that hardly anyone understands him. But that doesn't interest him very much. Most of the time he has a relaxed, almost sleepy look.

In Hogwarts:

Phil get sortedinto the house of Gryffindor and is quite happy with the decision. He likes adventures and actually likes to explore the castle while pretending to be in a dungeon from one of his games.

In the beginning, Phil had a hard time getting used to the lack of technique. That's why he likes to sneak out of the castle to look for a signal for his mobile phone. Due to the lack of the ability to play video games, he is actually constantly looking for pen and paper players. Only because of his different language, many do not understand him.

More by accident, he becomes a commentator on the Qudditch matches because of Reva Amari. Also, his way of talking is surprising at first, but people quickly got used to it, because Phil, who is otherwise so calm, really thaws out as a commentator and shows his lively side (you usually only have that when he plays games)

His grades are mediocre and he only learns when it's really necessary. He often doesn't do his homework and therefore often has to do detention or loses points.

His parents send him regular mail because his father has to send him the latest patch notes for his online games from home. And energy drinks.

From the 5th grade Phil has a passion for energy drinks and even likes to share them with his friends (which sometimes has devastating consequences).

Normally, the other students leave him alone, but on Halloween, Phil's second great passion comes to the fore - cosplay.

Phil is largely responsible for the fact that the students at Hogwarts dress up for Halloween. He sews most of the costumes himself, especially for himself and his friends. He proves his talent for handicrafts and sewing. However, one should not approach him during this time as he seems to be easily stressed. It's especially bad when he's wearing his headband.

Adult Life:

Through an internship he was forced to do, Phil discovered the wonders of wandmaking for himself.

His skill in handicrafts shows his great talent and after the internship he gets more and more involved with the materials and the topic. After graduating from Hogwarts, Phil opens his own wand shop, which is known for its unusual designs.

Whoo! This'll take a minute -- let's do this!

🌌 MILKY WAY - what was the inspiration behind your oc? what was the first thing you decided about them?

Carewyn, as better explained here, is a fusion of my mum and myself as kids!

Jacob, as better explained here, was inspired by the stories my mum used to tell me about her late brother!

Erik was inspired largely by a friend of mine from high school who had this very cherubic face and also the largest, sassiest potty mouth of all of my friends. His name was also inspired by two of my favorite Broadway characters -- Erik from The Phantom of the Opera and Enjolras from Les Miserables (affectionately called “Apollo” in the book).

Ana came about because I thought an INFP Gryffindor could be a really fun contrast, but personality-wise, she really took influence from both myself and my dad as kids, since my dad’s a Gryffindor and I’m an INFP.

Farid, as better explained here, was inspired by both Newt and Jacob from Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them and Yugi Mutou from Yu-Gi-Oh.

Jackson, as better explained here, was inspired by historical stage magician Harry Houdini!

Bat, as better explained here, was inspired by Garrett Denali from Twilight and Sirius Black, as well as other “Lancer” type figures like Ron Weasley and Jounouchi Katsuya from Yu-Gi-Oh.

Ru was an evolution of an idea I’d developed much earlier on of a serial killer kelpie that transforms into various forms to eat people, but over time, they developed a love of photography and film that’s largely like my own for film and television, and in doing so developed a much more sympathetic motivation and personality. Their particular feeling of isolation and wanting to be part of this world they could only watch from afar is a feeling I’ve felt off-and-on for years and evoked both Quasimodo from The Hunchback of Notre Dame and Ariel from The Little Mermaid, to me.

Ed’s brain spark largely came down to me thinking it’d be fun to have a 90′s style boy band (i.e. Backstreet Boys, N*SYNC, 98 Degrees) in the Potterverse around the time when Harry and crew were at school. Backstory-wise, I took inspiration from Severus Snape, Andromeda Black-Tonks, and both Sirius and Regulus Black, and obviously Ed’s a Slytherin like Snape, Andromeda, and Regulus...but personality-wise Ed actually ended up taking some inspiration from Anna from Frozen! In fact, one of the character themes I chose for him as a child is a deleted song from Frozen that was originally going to be sung by Anna called More Than Just a Spare.

Desiree came about largely because of the creation of Jules Aquila @kathrynalicemc. His spontaneous, fantasy-loving personality was just so likable (largely because of how in-tune I was with it myself!), so when I was working on a character that I thought could be a fun contrast for someone like Jules, I settled on using my late stepmum as inspiration. I’m a very right-brained, sensitive, imaginative person like Jules, while my stepmum as a girl was a very left-brained, soft-spoken, modest, scientific, nerdy overachiever the way Desiree is. Like Desi as well, my stepmum had to find freedom and happiness by breaking away from her family and home and starting a new life apart from them. Desiree also ended up gaining flickers of my mum (who has always been very sensible and organized and shares a personality type -- ISTJ -- with Desi), as well as Elsa from Frozen, Luisa from Encanto, and Tiana from The Princess and the Frog. Both Kath and I have also found amusement at how much Juliree resembles Aladdin/Jasmine from Aladdin, ship-wise, as well.

Eli was largely inspired by comic film actors Buster Keaton and Charlie Chaplin, as well as Robin Williams and Fiyero from the musical Wicked. Like Robin did, Eli struggles with severe depression, but works hard to keep a smile on so as to make others happy, and like Fiyero, he was the sort to “tune in and drop out” at school from an academic perspective, but he’s actually a lot deeper emotionally than he seems from the outside.

Bairn’s initial spark just came from me finding Brock O’Hurn and wanting to design a character that resembled him, honestly! 😂 I gotta thank @magical-retales for brainstorming a Renaissance-set storyline featuring Merlin, though...it was so much fun to take inspiration from different King Arthur storylines for Bairn’s character, like the Once and Future King series and Disney’s The Sword in the Stone. Bairn also took some cues from both Harry Potter and Charlie Weasley, being a Gryffindor orphan raised by uncaring Muggles with a longing for family and a love of nature and magical creatures!

😨 FEARFUL - when scared, do they go into "flight" or "fight"?

Farid's an interesting case because he is incredibly pacifistic, and so when it comes to most confrontation or conflict, he tends to pacify and submit. He hates when people are shouting or angry and wants to do everything he can to bring down the temperature and prevent any violence from breaking out. But when the threat is more against the creatures he's caring for or the people he loves, or if he's dealing with a dangerous creature, Farid can actually be pretty damn fearless.He isn’t really a “fighter,” exactly, but he will throw himself right out into the heat of danger and become a barricade to protect others.

🍧 SHAVED ICE - do they still have any objects from their childhood? what significance does it have to them? what would their reaction be if they lost it?

Farid didn’t have many friends growing up, so he built up a large library over the course of his childhood, including books he liked reading when he was little and still return to even though they’re way below his reading level, such as The Velveteen Rabbit. When he moved in with his uncle Arif, Farid had to leave a lot of that library behind -- there are plenty of times while he’s with Arif that he wishes so much that he could lay his hands on his old copy of James and the Giant Peach, Charlotte’s Web, or The Kite Runner on those nights when he’s sitting in bed unable to sleep.

🍁 MAPLE LEAF - what is their favourite season? why?

Winter! Farid loved when his family would get together and eat lots of good food, as well as when he and his older brother Malik would play in the snow. Farid's younger sister Rim also is very talented at ice skating, and Farid loves watching her show off out on the ice.

☁️ CLOUD - a soft headcanon

When Farid was growing up, all the cats and dogs in his neighborhood knew and liked him. They would always beg for treats and/or pets from him if they spotted him on his walk home from school. This pattern continued when Farid started living with his uncle Arif and helping Hagrid out with the creatures that lived on the Hogwarts grounds -- every creature from Buckbeak “Witherwings” the hippogriff, to the unicorns and mooncalves, to the chimaera Farid actually named “Miyu” (meaning “meow”) all flock around Farid when they see him in the hopes of pets and snacks. Sometimes Farid’s familiar Fawkes has to spread his wings and squawk pointedly to ward some of them off, if they’re crowding his “buddy” too much.

☄️ COMET - what do people assume about them? are they right?

Many people, upon first meeting Farid, tend to assume he’s a shy, awkward, goody-two-shoes pushover, and honestly, they’re entirely not wrong -- Farid doesn’t like breaking rules or making people unhappy, if he can help it. What people don’t suspect is just how simultaneously fearless and gentle he is when it comes to dealing with animals, nor how intelligent he really is. Yes, Farid’s a very good student, but it’s not just because he’s bookish and a rule follower -- he’s also incredibly thoughtful, intellectual, and prone to daydreaming.

Hello! 👋 😁 Since this week’s TLSQ on Hogwarts Mystery focuses on the Mirror of Erised, I have an interesting question to ask you about all your MCs: If they looked into the mirror, what would they see? And how would they feel afterwards?

Hi there! Oh my gosh, this is such a wonderful question...thank you for sending it in!! 💚💚💚

Now let's see...let's go one at a time...

Carewyn Cromwell ~ Carewyn's greatest dream might be to become a truly great witch who has the power to help and inspire people, but more than anything, all she truly wants more than anything is to spend one more moment with the friends she's lost -- Tonks, Lupin, Dobby, Mad-Eye, Duncan, and more than anyone else, Rowan. If asked what she saw, Carewyn would lie through her teeth and say it was the first, but anyone who knew her well would know it wasn’t true.

Jacob Cromwell ~ In a similar vein to Carewyn, Jacob's greatest wish is to travel the world and do great things, but at his heart, all he truly wishes is that Ashe was still with him and alive, so he could experience all of those amazing things with him. Jacob would probably go silent enough that anyone who knew him could pretty easily figure out what it is he sees without having to ask.

Erik Apollo ~ This reflection wouldn't be as grief-oriented, even though Erik lost both of his parents when he was young. Erik's greatest desire to see every dementor on Earth completely destroyed, and the Mirror of Erised would depict this by showing Erik standing on and holding ripped pieces of cloak that then fade away into nothingness. Erik would probably regard the mirror with a very stony expression, but if one looked closely, one could see the fiery, almost triumphant determination flaring up in his eyes. He will ensure this dream comes true, so that no one else ever has to suffer in the dementors’ hold again.

Anastasia "Ana" Read ~ Yay, finally a happy one! Ana's Erised reflection would be herself surrounded by stacks and stacks of her own published works...and usually "strong and silent" Ana would be friggin' over-the-moon and desperate to know if what she's seeing is the future or not.

Farid Sikander ~ Farid would see himself surrounded by his entire family, including his estranged uncle Arif and Fawkes the phoenix, all embracing each other and him with smiles on their faces. Farid would be enchanted by the magic mirror and probably wouldn't leave it for a while, sitting in front of it and staring at the reflection silently until someone came to find him.

Jackson Knightly ~ Jackson’s ambition and romantic nature would collide here, showing him as Minister of Magic, surrounded by a crowd of cheering people and able to kiss his husband Montelimar @cursebreakerfarrier in public without any fear of other people’s judgment. If he was around anyone else but Monty, he’d withhold that last part with a dashing, confident smile -- only Monty would be privileged enough to know about that particular wish, that he was brave enough to overcome that particular insecurity of his toward public displays of affection.

Robert Harker / Bartholomew “Bat” Varney / Robert Bellamy ~ In Bat’s first life as Robert Harker, his Erised reflection would probably be himself as a Hogwarts professor, surrounded by a whole class of raptly attentive students, some of which look like they could be his children. As the vampire Bat Varney, that reflection would change to solely his old human self, just as he was before. And finally, as Robert Bellamy, strangely enough, he wouldn’t see anything except himself -- because truthfully, what he is in that very moment is all his soul ever truly wanted: his literal second chance at living, both as a human and more importantly as himself. In all three cases, I could see Bat trying to play off what he sees in the mirror with offhanded, scholarly logic, so as to try to mask how deeply emotional he is, seeing those desires reflected back at him.

Ru Ollivander ~ Ru’s reflection would be of an elderly version of themselves, their partner Estrid @thatravenpuffwitch, and their best friends Siobhan @kc-and-co and Galen @cursebreakerfarrier, all laughing and talking together just as easily as they do now. Ru would watch the reflection for a long moment before giving a low snort and dismissing the mirror as clearly being nothing but nonsense.

Desiree Lestrange ~ Yay, another happy one! Desiree’s reflection when she was young would’ve always been her family surrounding her with proud smiles on their faces...but as an adult, Desiree realized that was a dream that would both never happen and not fulfill her. What changed everything was experiencing the truer and purer joy of friendship and loving, respectful companionship...and so her reflection would now be merely standing at Jules’s side. @kathrynalicemc And although Desi might be a bit coy about what she sees if anyone were to ask her, her eyes would be so bright and her smile would be so fond, and she wouldn’t even bother trying to obscure just how happy the image makes her.

Whew! Okay, let's see...

Tea, coffee, hot chocolate or other?

Carewyn: Coffee! Like her good friend Talbott, she's a coffee addict to the extent her other half Orion tries to wean her off of it. Her favorite blend is a caramel macchiato, but she'll also drink it black in a pinch.

Jacob: Hot chocolate. Jacob is a chocoholic and he'll never pass up a good hot chocolate.

Lane: English Breakfast tea.

Erik: Coffee, black as his soul. LMAO just kidding. 🤣

Ana: Good old-fashioned milk, specifically skim, since it's what her mum raised her with in a misguided attempt to help "curb" her weight. She also loves orange and (thanks to her boo Charlie Copper's influence) lemon mimosas.

Farid: Juice!! This boy loves juice, especially orange juice, though he also becomes very fond of pumpkin juice while staying at Hogwarts. Also green tea and almond milk.

Ru: They'll drink most anything that isn't too sweet (they really don't like chocolate, for instance), but in the mornings they tend to like apple juice best.

Ed: Any kind of sweet coffee brew, especially if it's got lots of foam. He actually becomes rather fond of trying out new brews at Muggle coffee shops just for kicks, though one of his favorites so far is the white chocolate mocha. He also loves hot chocolate, especially white hot chocolate.

Desi: Tea! Earl Gray tea is her absolute favorite thing to have in the morning, alongside a French croissant.

Eli: Butterbeer, though after moving to the States and living as a Muggle, he also became very fond of root beer and Coca Cola. (Eli honestly has never had much respect for what drinks/foods belong to which times of the day, especially given how bonkers his schedule can be with rehearsals and the parties he'll stay up all night for, so yes, he will drink soda "for breakfast," so to speak.)

What is your character’s favourite food and who cooks it best?

Carewyn: Potato crisps! Walkers makes good ones.

Jacob: As mentioned before, chocolate! As a kid he loved Cadbury eggs and Yorkie Bars, but as an adult traveling the world, he falls in love with Richart and Ghirardelli chocolate.

Lane: Pikelets! She learned how to make them at home early on and she's always loved making them for her bairns Carewyn and Jacob.

Erik: Cinnamon coffee cake! He also likes Red Hot candies.

Ana: Fresh bread, right out of the oven. Her favorite kind is German brown bread.

Farid: Curry! All kinds. One of his favorite recipes to make himself is a lamb curry with chopped apple, onion, potatoes, and golden raisins, as well as a bunch of spices.

Jackson: Crepes, specifically with strawberries and powdered sugar! He's become very fond of making them in the mornings for both himself and Monty.

Bat: This is going to sound so cliche if you know about Bat's love of Christmas...but figgy pudding. No one can make it like his mum used to!

Ru: Aaaaaaapples. This water horse will eat most anything, but they love apples. Apple pie and apple turnovers are their friend -- it doesn't take long for their other half Estrid @thatravenpuffwitch to figure this out, so she'll sometimes surprise them by going to the market and picking some up from time to time.

Ed: Cheesecake. Ed loves most pastries, but cheesecake is his OTL and it doesn't matter how cheap it is, he will always indulge in some. When he first tried Mrs. Weasley's cheesecake, he went very quiet as he ate the whole thing without stopping and he was grinning and flushed like a happy schoolboy for the entire rest of the day, he was so happy.

Desi: Croissants! Though while traveling she also tries and takes a liking to cornish pasties.

Eli: Custard. He also takes a liking to Jello, pudding, and meatballs, while living in the States.

Okay, so Jacob Kowalski getting a wand in the new Fantastic Beasts 3 trailer...I frankly hope that it’s just a fake wand that can sort of be used as a bluff whenever Jacob’s in more magical settings, kind of like the “fake wand” pen I gave Muggle HPMA cinnamon roll Farid Sikander --

-- because otherwise, I think Jo Rowling has completely forgotten what wands are even for. Wands aren’t where magic comes from -- they are used to CHANNEL the magic inside of magical beings. This is why wizards and witches can use wandless magic at all -- hell, why HOUSE ELVES can do magic without wands. Therefore, a Muggle or Squib wouldn’t be able to cast any spells with a wand, no matter how good their form or how hard they tried! Even in the real-world copy of The Tales of Beedle the Bard, we find this commentary:

While the “rogue” ability to perform magic sometimes appears in those of apparent non-magical descent (though several later studies have suggested that there will have been a witch or wizard somewhere on the family tree), Muggles cannot perform magic. The best — or worst — they could hope for are random and uncontrollable effects generated by a genuine magical wand, which, as an instrument through which magic is supposed to be channeled, sometimes holds residual power, which it may discharge at odd moments.

Jo in a 2006 interview also once said that the result, if a Muggle picked up a wand, would be “something accidental... possibly quite violent. Because a wand, in my world, is merely a vehicle — a vessel for what lies inside the person.”

So yeah, I don’t exactly know what Dumbledore really thinks Jacob’s gonna do with that wand, if it is actually meant to be used like a wand. But really, I’m perfectly content waiting to hear that answer from other people who have gone to see the movie, because The Crimes of Grindelwald really left me so cold and thoroughly unimpressed that I don’t really have any interest in seeing where the story goes from here.

Haha, uh, I largely blame @thatravenpuffwitch for this (though I gather @that-scouse-wizard and @kathrynalicemc have some part in this idea too 💛)...but yeah, here are some aesthetics casting four of my MC’s as D&D classes! I didn’t have full stories developed for these guys in these roles, but I did have a few basic ideas --

Carewyn Cromwell (HPHM) is an elfin bard who travels in the hopes of reuniting with her brother, an up-and-coming court wizard who was conscripted against his will to fight in a war of humans and elves. What she lacks in strength she has in courage, resourcefulness, grace, and wit, and she’s soon able to charm her way through multiple towns on her quest to find her brother and bring him home.

Farid Sikander (HPMA) was born to a family of clerics, but ultimately followed his estranged uncle’s example and became a druid. He may believe in the same higher power his family does and believes in honoring that higher power through living an upstanding life, but his connection with creatures and his incredible ability to both commune with and transform into them has led him to see the divinity within nature itself. This places Farid in direct opposition with both his father and the corrupt Head Clerics who originally trained him.

Jackson Knightly (HPHL) is the illegitimate son of a greedy rogue and a royal handmaiden, who was subsequently kidnapped by that rogue and taken from his mother and home. As if by fate, however, the young boy collided with a peculiar old beggarwoman, and upon helping her to her feet with a smile and a flower, he was granted a boon: the power to control all forms of light, including lightning. Upon using his new uncontrollable gift to escape his father, Jackson was embraced by the court his mother served and treated as the crown’s newest “favorite,” both for his suave charm and good looks as well as the supernatural power boost he could give the kingdom’s army.

Desiree Lestrange (Fantastic Beasts) was born to a prominent family of wizards. Every male member of the family is world-renown for their magic, many serving as the right-hand of royals all across the land. And Desiree as a woman was expected to serve her family just as dutifully as they served those royals -- if nothing else, with her younger brother constantly entertaining the royal court with his own magic, someone had to stick closer to home and magically create more money to help pay off the family’s debts. But although everyone expected Desiree to merely use her magic to care for and carry on her family line, they thoroughly underestimated just how much more this soft-spoken and overly serious, but brilliant mage was capable of.

I don’t know if I’ll do any others (I have done some brainstorming for Bat, Ru, Ana, and Erik as well) or anything, but...well, if you like them, like/reblog/comment and such, yeah? These were fun to work on! 💖

Tortoise Trouble

Happy Birthday to my favourite grumpy boy. Sorry for making everyone near and dear to you giving you a constant headache all of the time. Am I gonna stop? Well...

Farid Sikander belongs to @carewyncromwell, Saffron Summers and Rory McTavish (latter in mention) to my beautiful @the-al-chemist who enjoys winding Dylan up probably even more than I do.

A second shoutout and massive thanks to @the-al-chemist for providing me with proper advice on how to care for a tortoise. Having a vet as your best friend comes in handy in the most unsuspecting ways sometimes. Love you 💛

“Come on, Dylan, please!” Dana begged for what was probably the tenth time. “It’s only for the weekend. I know it’s your birthday on Sunday, and I’m so sorry I won’t be here for that, but he won’t be much bother at all, I promise.”

Dylan had to stifle a sigh. He wasn’t sure how long they’d been having the same conversation now, but it must have been more than ten minutes for sure. It wasn’t that he had a problem with taking care of Dana’s pet tortoise Darwin because it was his birthday while she was away; he wouldn’t want to do it on any other day of the year either.

“Darwin doesn’t like me,” he tried arguing with his troubled friend.

Which is a mutual feeling, he thought, but wouldn’t dream of saying to Dana’s face, which now scrunched up in dismay.

“You’re being dramatic.”

“I’m not being dramatic, I don’t see the point. He’s a tortoise. Tortoises hibernate. Throw your nail varnishes out and stuff him in your drawer, for all that it’s worth.”

Dana looked appalled at the idea, though Dylan wasn’t quite sure whether this was due to the idea of keeping her precious tortoise in a drawer, or his suggested treatment of her ridiculous amount of nail varnishes.

“Darwin will not hibernate in my drawer,” she said pointedly. “I would take him to the duelling contest with me, but that would unsettle him.”

“He’s hibernating. Sleeping. He wouldn’t even notice.”

“He would. He has feelings, you know?”

Dana crossed her arms in front of her chest and Dylan had to try hard not to roll his eyes.

“Could you at least look at the cooling spell I use to keep his temperature down?” Dana asked somewhat annoyed now. “It’s been acting up all week. If the spell breaks and he wakes up in the middle of winter while I’m away…”

Dylan furrowed his brow. Dana was right, actually; if Darwin woke from his hibernation too early, he’d need close monitoring to make sure his metabolism wasn’t thrown off track.

“Why me though?” he asked unhappily. “Can’t one of your friends take care of him?”

“You are one of my friends. And correct me if I’m wrong, but last time I asked your goal was to become a magizoologist. A simple tortoise shouldn’t be that much of a problem, right?”

Dylan made a dismissive sound. “Taking care of a hibernating tortoise is like watching a rock. Anyone could do it.”

A sly smile appeared on Dana’s face. “Well, if that’s the case… Rory actually offered. I might just go and ask him if you’re ever so busy.”

Dylan’s brows drew together into an even deeper scowl. Rory McTavish. Of course he would have offered to jump in. What a prick.

“Fine, I’ll do it,” Dylan grumbled under his breath.

“What was that?”

“I said fine, I’ll do it” he repeated more loudly.

“You’re the best,” Dana beamed at him, looking thoroughly satisfied. “You two are going to have the best time.”

“He’s hiberna-” Dylan started but then thought better of it. Not like she was listening anyway.

When the weekend came and Dana left Darwin in Dylan’s care, Dylan was surprised to find out that they both turned out to be right. Taking care of the hibernating Darwin was like watching a rock, and Dylan had a great time because of it. He had a lot less problems than Dana with letting Darwin sit inside his top drawer, and when Dylan woke on the morning of his birthday, he had all but forgotten about him.

To celebrate, he and his sister Reva did some skateboarding down the shifting stairways of the castle for the morning. When he came back from taking a shower, he was only half surprised to find Saffron Summers waiting for him inside his dormitory.

“Saff,” he sighed.

“Hello Dylan,” Saffron hummed without looking at him. She was busy rearranging the things on Dylan’s nightstand into a pattern more to her liking. “Happy Birthday.”

“Thanks. How did you get in here?”

“Through the door,” Saffron hummed and continued putting three colourful crystals under each corner of Dylan’s mattress.

“Of course.”

Dylan walked over to his bed, took the two bunnies Saffron had brought with her off his pillow and collected the crystals again; meanwhile Saffron had proceeded to draw obscure symbols on the posts of Dylan’s canopy with purple chalk.

“What are you doing?”

“Warding your bed.”

“And why are you warding my bed?” Dylan said and counted down from ten inside his head.

“Because it isn’t warded.”

“Why should it be?”

“Why shouldn’t it be?”

Saffron hummed a happy melody and Dylan pinched the bridge of his nose. “And what else are you doing here? Besides warding my possessions, that is.”

Saffron stopped drawing and tilted her head to the side. She looked very puzzled for a moment before her features lit up.

“Oh, Farid told me to get you. He said there were new Firecrabs arriving today and he thought we’d like to see them. They have very pretty crystals on their shells.”

“They’re jewels.”

“They protect them from harm. Crystals do that.”

Dylan didn’t want to start a discussion he was bound to lose, so he simply grabbed his jacket and scarf and headed for the door. When Saffron wasn’t following him, he looked over his shoulder expectantly.

“Aren’t you coming?”

Saffron had picked her bunnies up, carrying one under each arm and swaying slightly from side to side. One of the bunnies - Bigwig, he was called - was nibbling on the sleeve of Saffron’s coat, but she either didn’t notice or didn’t mind.

“You have forgotten something.”

Her gaze drifted down to Dylan’s nightstand and Dylan had to stifle a sigh. Saffron was Dana’s best friend; of course she would have told her that she had entrusted Darwin to Dylan while she was away.

“He’ll be perfectly fine in there.”

“He might get lonely. Should we leave a bunny with him?”

“No!” Dylan said immediately. The last thing he needed was a bunny running rampant in his dormitory while he was away.

“Poor Darwin,” Saffron said sympathetically.

“What is it with you girls?” Dylan muttered, took Darwin out of the drawer and stuffed him inside the pocket of his jacket. “See? He’s included in all the fun. Can we go now, please?”

When Saffron and Dylan made their way down to Hagrid’s hut, they found Farid waiting for them inside the small compound where their Care of Magical Creatures classes were usually held. He was surrounded by four sturdy Firecrabs reaching up to his knees, their jewel-encrusted shells gleaming in the winter sun. He was beaming happily when he saw Dylan and Saffron approach.

“Dylan!” he called out when they joined him inside the compound. “I was hoping Saffron would find you. Happy birthday!”

“Thanks,” Dylan said and nodded towards the Firecrabs. “Are these the newcomers?”

“Fresh in,” Farid answered and his eyes were sparkling with excitement. “Look at how they interact with each other. It’s fascinating.”

They spent most of their afternoon like this, watching the Firecrabs settling into their new environment and preventing Saffron’s bunnies Bigwig and Tofu from getting roasted by a blast of sparks from the Firecrabs’ rear ends every now and again.

When the three of them were frozen to the bone, they settled inside Hagrid’s hut in front of the fireplace with a steaming cup of tea. Dylan leaned back in one of the gigantic armchairs and laughed at a joke the half-giant had just made. From skateboarding with his sister to tending to the new Firecrabs and now having a good time with his friends, this birthday was one of the best he’d had in a long time; if only Dana was here with them now, it would have been perfect.

Dylan stiffened at the thought and abruptly leaned forward. The thought of Dana consequently led him to another one and he quickly hurried over to the pile of winter clothes lying on the table next to the door. He pulled his jacket out from the bottom of it and reached into its pocket, but he felt nothing but fabric beneath his fingers.

His heart suddenly beating faster in his chest, Dylan immediately checked the other side but - except for a small crystal Saffron had sneaked into it - found it to be empty as well.

“Wha’s wrong, Dylan?” Hagrid said and drew his brows together. “‘ave yer lost somethin’?”

Dylan, who was picking up the jackets and scarfs one by one and shaking them gently, nodded.

“Darwin,” he said tersely, “Dana’s tortoise I’m supposed to watch.”

“A tortoise?” Farid said and frowned. “Tortoises should hibernate this time of the year.”

“Don’t you tell me,” Dylan snapped. “Dana said her cooling charm was wonky. It must have broken and now he’s gone.”

“It’s so warm in here,” Farid said, looking concerned, “there’s no way of telling what it will do with his metabolism.”

“You don’t say,” Dylan muttered while crawling under the table to see where Darwin might have gone. “Dana’s going to kill me on the spot if we don’t find him.”

“Don’ yer worry. Can’t have gone far, can he? Not like tortoises are the fastest ones around, righ’?” Hagrid said and his laugh boomed through the hut. “We’ll find yer pet in no time.”

As it turned out, Hagrid had either severely underestimated Darwin’s speed or cunning, because no matter how hard they were looking, the fugitive tortoise was nowhere to be found. They searched the hut high and low and back again - Hagrid up on the shelves, Farid and Dylan in every nook and corner, and for some reason, Saffron led Tofu and Bigwig sniffing through the room - yet there was no trace of Darwin whatsoever.

The longer they kept looking, the more the panic inside Dylan’s chest grew; it wouldn’t be long before Dana would return from her contest. If she found out Dylan had managed to lose Darwin…

“You need to calm down,” Saffron told him matter-of-factly. “Your aura is all off. It’s distracting the bunnies. Here, hold this.”

Before Dylan could do anything to stop her, she had shoved a crystal between his lips and was pressing two more to his temples.

“Repeat this incantation after me,” she began, but was interrupted by the indistinct noises coming from Dylan’s mouth. “What?”

Dylan plucked the crystal from his mouth impatiently. “Stop the nonsense and help looking.”

“The bunnies are on his trail. You need to say the incantation with me.”

“This is no incantation this is -”

“There you are!” the voice of Farid suddenly interrupted them. He was standing beside Hagrid’s boot rack and held one of the impressively large shoes upside down in his hand. In the other, slowly wiggling his flippers through the air, lay Darwin.

Saffron and her crystals forgotten, Dylan rushed over to him and plucked the tortoise from Farid’s hand. He quickly turned Darwin around, checking if he was alright, but he didn’t seem to be hurt or anything.

“It’s too warm in here,” Farid said softly. “Tortoises dig themselves into the ground to hibernate in the wilderness. Darwin must have been looking for a dark place to go back to sleep.” He gently ran his finger over Darwin’s shell. “What a smart little tortoise you are.”

“Opinions diverge on this,” Dylan mumbled and very carefully sat Darwin onto the table. “What do we with you now, huh?”

“You will need to clean and weigh him,” Farid said, “and find him something to eat, obviously.”

“Can’t we just re-hibernate him?”

“No, that would mess him up for good. Now that he is awake, you’ll have to get him through the winter like he is now.”

“Just my luck. I’d better get him back to the castle where I can regulate the temperature better,” Dylan said and carefully put Darwin back into his pocket. This time, he made sure the zipper was closed. So much for taking care of a rock.

When Dana waited for him outside the Hufflepuff common room later that evening, Dylan tried his best to keep a straight face as she asked him how their weekend had been.

“Ask him yourself,” he shrugged and held Darwin out to her. He poked his little head outside his shell and Dana made a noise that was something between concerned and enamoured.

“Good morning, my little darling,” she cooed. “Did you sleep well?”

A little more seriously, she turned to Dylan. “I told you the cooling charm was off. But it seems like you took brilliant care of him. I’ll take him from here.” She gently took Darwin out of Dylan’s hands, lightly brushing her fingers against his. “I do hope he didn’t cause you any trouble.”

“Not at all,” Dylan shrugged and then suddenly had to inhale sharply. Just before Darwin had left his hands, he had turned his head and bitten into Dylan’s finger.

“Darwin!” Dana said sternly. “Be polite. Dylan took the best care of you all weekend. That’s no way to behave.”

Dylan had to suppress a triumphant grin as the tortoise seemed to glare at him.

“Now, before I forget,” Dana said with a smile and reached into the bag she was carrying.

From it she pulled a colourfully wrapped present with little dogs on the wrapping paper; Dylan had to laugh quietly and shake his head. His mother had always used this wrapping paper when he had been a child. She had long stopped, but Dana found it so cute that she never failed to source some of it year after year.

“Happy Birthday, kiddo,” she said softly as she handed him his gift. “Sorry I wasn’t here for most of it.”

Before Dylan had a chance to thank her, she stood on her tiptoes, pressed a kiss to his cheek and whizzed away in the direction of Gryffindor Tower with a noticeable bounce in her steps. Dylan stared after her, one hand holding his present, the other pressed to his cheek. What in Godric’s name had gone into her?

He shook himself out of his haze, his cheeks feeling decidedly warmer than before, and returned to the common room. He ignored Saffron’s ramblings about his aura and sat down in his favourite armchair to open Dana’s present. A smile crossed his face when his eyes fell on the embossed cover of a brand new copy of Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them. He opened the front page to find a dedication written in Dana’s neat, feminine hand:

To my favourite magizoologist in the making. I knew a tortoise would be no match for you.

He skimmed through the pages, reading through the tiny notes and annotations Dana had made all over the book. Some of them were funny, some ridiculously inaccurate, but each and every one of them was making him smile.

Maybe caring for that blasted tortoise had been worth the trouble after all.
