wouldnt it be sick if in Futures Rewritten Ultimate you have to awaken the primals (kinda like UWU) from Eden's Promise's memory crystals and if you dont then EP uses your party members to as vessel to summon them. and if you do awaken them then in the last phase when youre fighting some crazy Yuri Fusion Oracle of Light and Darkness Prime all the primals come back and do their own captain planet fusion into an overdesigned Eulogia monstrosity that smites the boss. or even your party members summons them as vessels to nuke the boss (because Ultimate LB spam has seen its course I think)
also this would be one last punchline re: the WoL's bad memory because they would be conflating the Primals with the Twelve and their combined form Eulogia

I've also seen it suggested that Zenos is a flat character, and I think that's true! I think he is intentionally drawn both sharply and flatly to make him stand out and to play up his symbolic and thematic role. But I think, especially post-Endwalker, he is frequently reduced to the aspects that serve as metacommentary on gaming and MMOs and FFXIV itself, but equally important (and more important up through Endwalker itself) is his role as imperialism's final output.
Zenos initially feints at being a certain kind of rounded villain. He has cool armor and a signature weapon (these things matter in a game like FFXIV), he's presented as a genuine believer in merit in juxtaposition to his sexist and racist officers, he's well-spoken and takes a personal interest in you. In fact, he's a lot like Gaius van Baelsar, whose brief but charismatic (and, due to MSQ roulette, repeatedly viewed) appearances in ARR suggested to some the impression of a noble figure in service to the wrong ideals, one of gaming's favorites kinds of Rounded Characters With Nuanced Writing.
It's possible to mistakenly believe through just about the Ala Mhigo dungeon itself that maybe Zenos will have a turn, that his relentless torture of conquered peoples accomplishes some greater end in his mind. After all, wasn't Gaius also fixated on violence and strength? Didn't he also believe that man raises himself up through conflict? And Gaius's Praetorium speech has fans and defenders to this day!
This is why the Royal Menagerie and the ultimate flattening of Zenos's character is effective, compelling, and ultimately necessary. Where ARR ends still pretending that maybe Gaius was an interesting dude with things to say, Stormblood finishes the job of (literally) stripping violent imperialism of its mask and showing it for what it is. Prosperity, the Roman peace, technological progress, all of those are incidental outputs to this, imperialism's true engine: the naked exercise of power and glorification of violence for their own sakes, as ends in themselves. Zenos fights so he can fight more. That's the punchline.
And importantly, Endwalker confirms it's always the punchline. Garlemald is drowning in recurring symbols and archetypes. Corvos and Goug and Amaurot and (after its destruction) Garlemald proper all at various points represent for different characters a mythical pre-collapse Eden, the reclamation or realization of which (through the right kind of violence applied to the right kind of people) is the putative goal of the empire. There's multiple ideal imperial men, multiple evil scientists, multiple conflicted collaborators. They serve to enrich each other's stories because you can set Yotsuyu's story against Fordola's against Gosetsu's and learn something from it.
But there is only one future for the Garlean Empire (distinct from the nation and people of Garlemald). Zenos is the Crown Prince when he enters the game, and (probably) the last direct male heir in the line of Galvus when he dies. He is the nameless assassin who commits regicide and the opportunistic tyrant who seizes power in the aftermath. He is both the last corrupt emperor and, through the Telophoroi, the barbarian hordes raging at his own gates.
Zenos is the endpoint of the Garlean Empire. Anyone who has survived him will be part of something different; there are no alternatives to him (most notably, Nerva never appears, except as a blasphemy, and Gaius explicitly declines further involvement with Garlemald). He is the nihilistic, violent dead end that lies at the heart of empire. If you feel his aims are hollow and venal, then all is as it should be.

Character asks: for Thancred, 25 and 8. And 25 for Elidibus as well.
yay! i love doing these! you've poked the stick in the great places here! this got very long, lol, so under a cut it goes!
thancred. my pathetic wet cat. my try-hard disaster bab. my unexpected third leg of my ot3.
8. what's something the fandom does when it comes to this character that you despise?
i can't think of any trend that i see that really irritates me, though part of that may be the corners of fandom i have tucked myself into. he has a lot of layers that i was too stubborn to acknowledge until well into the better part of shb, and i think sometimes fandom isn't forgiving enough after his growth arc, but honestly i'm really not too fussed because i think he skates through on hot white boy appeal in fandom at large. i think it's possible to appreciate where he started, where he wound up, and how he got there without excusing his many mistakes, but i also think it's important to talk about how he worked through it. so that's my answer: i think fandom is either too easy on him or too hard on him with no room for nuance. i keep saying i'm going to write an essay, but idk if thancred needs me to defend him. maybe someday i'll go feral and do it anyway.
25. what was your first impression of this character? how about now?
god i cannot stress enough how much i gave absolutely zero shits about him when i first met him. even given what happens with lahabrea, i wasn't really moved. he screamed 'bland white-haired jrpg protagonist' to me and i only cared because for some reason which wasn't clear to me until i read the short stories, minfilia gave a lot of shits about him, actually. and i adore her. i didn't care about his angst in hw, though he grew more personality and by the end of sb i at least went from indifferent to 'fine, i guess he's here, too'. then, like many people, i spent a good deal of shb utterly pissed off at him until it became obvious to me that he was, despite what i think a lot of people believe, trying his best while drowning in an ocean of trauma with almost no tools to handle it. by this time i'd read his short story content, and understood the context better. i was very ride or die for urianger from arr on, and yamisnuffles teased me that he 'comes with a husband' and i was determined to refuse. i couldn't tell you the exact moment, but sometime around going to the moon i suddenly gave a shit enough to select him as the scion who visits you in your suite at the baldesion annex. and, well, fuck off. i discovered i cared a lot, actually.
now i have a pathetic wet cat in my ot3. i affectionately call the eden raids 'kit's family camping trip'.
same question for elidibus. my ultimate angry murder and get murdered husband.
i have to start by saying that the ascians as villains compel me more than almost any villains in any media i've ever consumed. even accounting for recency bias, they utterly fascinate me, and i don't know if i've ever been so moved by villain motivations. the unsundered specifically strike me as so tragic that it makes me feral. even lahabrea, who i really find difficult to like. but that's retrospect after the entire arc of their part in ffxiv. after lahabrea and nabriales, elidibus came in with a different approach, and that intrigued me. of course i had no idea the larger role he'd play later, but the way he attempted to stand on a moral high ground really hit some buttons. again, i was really into urianger from the get-go, and their apparent partnership gave me a lot of OH NOES to latch onto. i think elidibus is the character that allowed me to really give emet-selch consideration beyond 'my bestie loves him' because he gave me an inclination that there was more to the ascians than had been revealed so far.
he piqued my interest, then enraged me because of ardbert, but the more i learned about his past along the way the more invested i became. the shb patches slowly killed me, and by the end of seat of sacrifice i was sobbing for him. he's just a little guy fighting for the all but forgotten souls of his people. he was pivotal in saving the world, driven to madness by it, and in the end, all alone as the last of the unsundered. yet there are characters within the narrative who lie about him and his motivations. i'm choking up a bit right now thinking about it.
suffice to say pandaemonium rewired my dna and entire brain. by the end of it i was devastated and so in love with him as a character it's almost embarrassing. he was kind, thoughtful, and gave of himself wholly to what he believed in. his connection to wol is so beautifully bookended by it, and the ways he winds himself with them throughout the entirety of the game just hits every character button i have. the very tragic wol/elidibus ship with kit wrote itself in my head from the moment you drop into elpis. i spent a lot of time wondering how he got from the careful man we meet to zodiark and beyond, which is what compelled me to write to the edge (and back again). now i kill him at least three times a week. it's fine. i'm fine. i'm very normal about the unsundered, and most normal about elidibus.
thanks for the asks! what a delight to get to talk about these guys!

So I had my birthday the other day. I still haven't opened anything (mostly cards tbf), because my biggest gift was worsened horrible debilitating vertigo (and an upset stomach. And the standard seizures). I called a non-urgent healthline here in the uk since it was the weekend, they gave me a different anti-nausea med to try but ultimately that cannot stop the room spinning, my GP should really liaise with a neurology specialist? Lololololol neurologists (who care) don't exist in this corner of the realm
Meanwhile, due to the prior vertigo (we're in week 5 now!), I hadn't been able to monitor to my med collection and ran out of some stuff, but I ordered as soon as I realised on Tuesday. My parents came back on my birthday and went to the pharmacy... where we discovered that my doctors just. Didn't do anything. No apparent reason why. Just nothing. So there I was on my birthday, 5 days without antidepressants, feeling horrendous and honestly kinda scared (there is something so up with base of skull/top of neck), my eyes insisted on tears which were irritating my skin...
Luckily the non-urgent call thing could also issue a small amount of meds to tide you over which they have so I'm back on all my meds now, but wow that was all shit.
Still, I got some nice Chinese food, and a streamer I follow streamed the FFXIV Eden raids (more like GAYds) so that was a nice end to the day.
But yeah, things are shit. Don't get me started on the government's 'not a budget for if you care about poor people', that's a whole other thing that it's good I have my mood stabilised for because JFC [text removed to legally avoid incitation of violence]

For the FFXIV meme: 6, 9, 11 and 24!
6. Favorite Scion out of the Scions of the Seventh Dawn?
My ultimate favorite is a spoiler but the twins are also favorites of mine. love my son and daughter gonna cry when they get tall
9. Favorite trial?
My favorite trial is the final trial of Endwalker, and you will know what I mean when you get there: phase 2 of the fight MY ABSOLUTELY BELOVED and also my favorite song in the game.
11. The trial/dungeon that you will never do again unless forced to do so?
Generally I don't go back to ARR trials unless roulette makes me but also. Eden's Verse: Fulmination (Eden 5; Eden is the shadowbringers raid series). Eden raid series is very good and I love it overall but that fight makes me angry its so fucking annoying. (the music slaps though, always does)
24. The next seasonal event provides you with a dating sim like experience, who would you pursue? (Assume all character deaths/disappearances are negated so you may pick from anyone and everyone)
Zalia: Canon LI (spoiler) and for Lauriene: Aymeric. Also Haurchefant if its like a repeatable quest like some of the event stuff is.

he new Ultimate really has me thinking about how if Haurchefant were still here how WELL he would get along with G'raha. how they'd absolutely value each other's hearts of gold, grit, & courage. & G'raha would be in awe of what a perfect model Haurchefant is for a true knight 😭
Either very well or very poorly in their similarities, if and when they get the chance to interact. Though if we still had Haurchefant also we might get to see more of his various personality traits, like the anger so many in the fandom forgets he carries.
As he continued to sit in his desk at Camp Dragonhead, maybe joining the Ilsabard Contingent as that seems a thing he'd do (to both help and also to keep an eye on Emm, who still gets sent along too). Cuz honestly, Haurchefant, as that exemplary knight, has the same situation so many of the city leaders have: he is bound to his Duty, to his Home and Family and Faith, and he's the sort who'd keep working on making Ishgard better in the wake of the War and healing those centuries-old wounds, both personal (as relationships with his father and brothers were improving thanks to the Scions' interactions) and national.
I tend to think a lot of fix-its and everyone lives AUs don't take into account the negative as well as positive impacts of characters not dying; they're meant to be fluffy, happy alternatives in most cases, which might be why a lot of them don't vibe with me. Butterfly effect consequences aren't considered, while the Wandering Minstrel's Acid Trip What If AU Fanfic scenario is giving us a few interesting options and I want to see Masaki "Mr Ozma" Nakagawa's story write up for this fight, as he has for all the Ultimates, to outline the Minstrel's fic and how the fight progresses.
I was musing on this on Twitter the other day, actually, where I said I'd been thinking a lot this week about a time someone said something along the lines of “People remember and fuss about Haurchefant more for his death than for anything he did or who he was in life.”
Because in the end, Haurchefant's role in the story was to die, a Sacrificial Lion to catalyze the plot. Much as it sucks, in story it has a purpose and out of many nonsense deaths this game's had, his is actually the best handled and done, which is a big reason it sticks out in the minds of the players--that, and how it's been noted as a major trauma point for Assumed Default WoL, sometimes to the exclusion of other losses that should feel as keen; Ysayle, for instance, who barely got a mention in Eden despite so many players looking forward to finally getting a cathartic moment there.
(Though seriously, who in the writer's room had it out for Ishikawa's characters? Or is it just cuz all hers are that good and memorable, even in a short time, to make an impact on players?)
I also noted in that Twitter thread that as I get older, while character deaths are sometimes "necessary" for plot, I've grown weary of stories that rely too heavily on death to raise stakes and wring out emotions. Especially after experiencing stories where that isn't the case.
There's a reason I reblogged a big ol' analysis post about Lord of the Rings to this blog the other day; a few major figures die in the course of that epic, but the majority of the main cast? Survive, if forever changed by their experiences. It makes for an example of the kind of story FFXIV has shifted toward (Ishikawa's preference as writing lead) after trying to follow more grimdark fantasy models (Oda's preference as writing lead), which is where we have all the deaths and sacrifices of characters, many of them needless, or to prop up another character. With all the darkness in the world, I much prefer the tales that raise the stakes and get me emotional without having to kill off half the cast to do it.
