#fgo summer 2018

Just as a reminder, FGO always seems to be planning for roughly two years ahead of what's released. This time would account for seeing who/what is popular, writing the storyline and designing servants for certain future events. And since summer is about selling you your fave servants in swimsuits, hey'll take into consideration which characters are popular in 2021 when planning for summer 2023.
You can see this trend in previous summers:
Lostbelts 2 and 3 release in mid-late 2018 -> Yu-Mei Ren and Brynhildr get swimsuits in Summer 2020.
Ooku and Lostbelts 4 and 5.1 are dropped in 2019, 5.2 early 2020. LB5.1 is received very well. -> Summer 2021 features Kama, Caenis and an Atlantis heavy cast: Charlotte Corday, Achilles, Mandricardo. Sei Shonagon, from Valentines 2020, also drops.
Summer 2022 features Ibuki Douji, Proto!Merlin and Erice, all of whom debuted in some form of FGO two years prior.
Why is this important?
Well, Summer 2023 is extremely Lostbelt 6 heavy. And guess what was stupidly, ridiculously, overwhelmingly well-received and exceptionally popular in 2021, skyrocketing to be considered one of the, if not hands-down the, best FGO story chapter of all time?
Yeah. It was Lostbelt 6, Avalon le Fae.
If you thought for a single second the next summer event to be planned after LB6 dropped wasn't going to cash in on that insane popularity, I legitimately don't know what to say. You don't have to like it. You really, really don't. But there was absolutely never going to be any other outcome here.

2011: Chiba Mamoru (Sailor Moon)
2009 & 2010: Kuchiki Rukia (Bleach)
Pre-2009: Who knows? My memory sure doesn't!
And I promised fun facts, so...
The early days...
The reason I can date my first fave to Rukia in 2009 is because that was when I made a Fanfiction.net account and posted my first fanfic. Don't read it I was young and foolish.
Bleach, Inuyasha, and Sailor Moon were my first animes. The first two I definitely watched on Adult Swim back when I still watched cable.
I used to be pretty skilled at self defense and even have a first degree black belt. One of the reasons why Ran from Detective Conan really left an impression on me.
There's a few unnamed faves that I also had from more obscure anime that were from so long ago that I can't pinpoint the exact years. A special shoutout to Asuka from Ask Dr. Rin! This show is in no way affiliated with Tohsaka Rin lol.
And yes, I do have male faves besides Mamoru! I love Hak and his constipated repressed feelings for Yona (Akatsuki no Yona) and my in-game name in FGO is inspired by Kurogane (Tsubasa Reservoir Chronicles). And for whatever reason, Fred is my favorite from Scooby Doo.
Honestly, I have to give Elsa some credit. I think she started the trend of my faves being "blonde/light haired "regal" rich/well off BAMF ladies who seem cold and distant on the surface but are actually dorks over-burdened and forced to grow up too fast, with a dash (or a ton) of family angst dumped on them." I mean, do you see any of my past faves being blonde? xD
The college days...
I was in denial about being queer and swore I was straight until I somehow found Carmilla the Webseries (I don't even know how) during the summer of 2015 and had a multi-step process of acceptance that went something like "Oh the actress for Laura Hollis is hot. Oh the actress for Carmilla is cute, pretty, and a huge dork. Oh everyone is pretty attractive. Wait mostly just the girls. Wait is that why I don't give a shit about men?"
Little Witch Academia is not only the first series where I published fanfic on AO3, but it's also the series that got me to write AND finish longer stories. So congrats, Diana! I really wanted to angst you :D It's also the fandom where I found my closer Discord friends. Love y'all, mwah.
I think Revue Starlight might be the series that squeezed the most faves out of me. It holds a special place in my heart for numerous reasons, but the main one might be the collab fic I worked on with Quill, who is now my partner 😊So thanks, ReLive even if your gacha game is somehow even worse than FGO.
That said, the series I seem to always go back to seem to be the To aru and Fate franchises. Maybe it's because they're still ongoing.
Those two are also the reason I started messaging Quill back in the day, so they hold an extra special place in my heart. Even with all their flaws.
And then Lostbelt 6 hit FGO and blew everything out of the water. I rave about Morgan a lot but that chapter of the game truly had a stellar cast. Nasu wanted us to remember that he can cook lol.
Where is my Lostbelt 6 anime, Aniplex?

I think this year has been one of the strongest in terms of me being utterly confused at people's disdain over FGO's picks, especially in terms of who gets alts.
Like while summer 8 being so heavily LB6 focused was a pain, they could've mixed the characters up a bit more, maybe had Castoria last year as she came out a year before everyone else - people probably would've complained if one of the fairy knight girls had gotten an alt and another hadn't. Summer Morgan being the anni servant was annoying, for sure, but like. She was bound to happen and people like Tonelico?
Even Summer Kuro, while I dislike everything about her implementation, was someone people were theorizing for years.
Then with gudaguda with people upset that Kagetora got an alt when in the first half of her release year she was in the top 5 most grailed servants - and that was in a year with Kama, Junao, Asclepius, big names for grailed servants. And she's always had hints in her profile of an alt, why is it odd then?
And now with Santa Nemo where people are saying like oh why him, he doesn't deserve it it's like - he's part of our party? He's been with us since 2018? Two of the parts of Nemo (Captain and Marine) are like, key players within the story? I'm confused? Where was this disdain prior to now? I whole-heartedly agree with takes about his design but like, people suggesting that he doesn't deserve an alt?? Hello?
I just dont understand this fandom suggestion that oh the characters they're picking dont make sense for alts when we have some of the most popular servants ever getting alts. Just be honest. Just be honest with me.
"I'm sad my blorbo didn't get this."

hnnnngh as much as I find the lostbelt arc timeline fucky and made even fuckier by the timey wimey zero sailing, I still prefer having some concrete timeline with sion's one year wandering sea contract. I mean, yea it's weird that everything from part II prologue to tungunska happened between 2017-2018 december by the time the players themselves are closing in on 2022. but it's still less confusing than having to speculate myself
I still miss how clear cut temple of time arc was tho, with mash canonically meeting the protag on her birthday at the start of the plot and spending 1 summer, 2 halloweens and 2 christmas with doctor present before it ends near the turn of the year. They even fixed mash's birth year from 2000 to 1999 in some YEARS-OLD obscure story text in-game because originally the math wasn't math-ing, like, Lostbelt FGO would NEVER

          MASHU KYRIELITE ( SHIELDER ) || DREAMSCAPE
Expecting a bad time? [Tamamo Cat voice] muhuhu~ Not this time! This time around, things are going to be a little bit different — the trip through memory lane runs through a few of fgo’s lighter and brighter events for some breathing space after all the heavy feelings as of [checks watch] the last year or so.
SERVANT SUMMER FESTIVAL — SUMMER EVENT 2018 (JP) / 2020 (NA)
Hawaii time! Looking to make her debut at the annual ServaFes, Jeanne Alter heads an effort to create the best-selling doujin. While a Foreigner is on the hunt for a perceived threat to humanity lurking on the island, Chaldea do what they can to push her back, only to find that come the end of ServaFes, when Jalter’s doujin isn’t ranked first, they return to the beginning of the week. A time loop instigated by none other than BB to protect Chaldea’s Master from the Lostbelts looming in the near future.
ÉCHIQUIER DE L'APOCALYPSE — REQUIEM CROSSOVER EVENT
Pulled inside a strange game that showed up in Chaldea, the event takes place inside a partially-sunken version of Akihabara. With the company of Voyager, Chaldea plays through various games located within the game world, including a murder mystery, snakes and ladders up a mountain and meeting with Servants who have been integrated into the world to obtain coins of other Heroic Spirits who have lost their Masters and been sealed. The objective is to catch up to Voyager’s previous Master, Erice Utsumi, and help her accept who she is, with an Avenger who bears likeness to an adult Marie Antoinette looking to twist Erice around her finger.
GRAIL LIVE! — MOONLIGHT WALTZ CROSOVER EVENT
It’s time for Battle of the Bands! In a floating city above Tokyo, Miss Crane leads Chaldea Production’s unit, with centre Mysterious Idol X Alter, to the top! The details are a wee fuzzy with this having not had its rerun and happening not long before Avalon, but know it’s very flashy and fun!

I literally have no idea what I have drawn. I just wanted to draw saber Gilles in stupid dolphin costume and summer Jeanne (again). So it ended up like this. What is this dolphin dance ritual? My brain has stopped working, bruh.

I am surprised lb6 didn't get a summer event already. Then again with how things are going it'll just be a Morgan and Castoria event. The devs kind of forgot about the other fae knights.
There seems to be about a 2 year lag on LB servants debuting and them showing up in Summer events - I think I read somewhere that FGO is always about two years or so ahead on its releases, and they probably want to see how well received a servant is before deciding to give them a swimsuit.
Götterdämmerung and SIN late 2018 -> Yu Mei Ren, Bryn unit, Sigurd and Prince of Lanling skin, Consort Yu-centric plot in Summer 2020.
India, Olympus/Atlantis mid-late 2019/early 2020 -> Kama, Caenis, Corday, Achilles & Mandricardo Summer in 2021, etc.
There's definitely a lean towards servants from LBs that released two years prior. That isn't a hard rule though...
That even holds up in Summer 2022; 2020 gave us Heian-Kyo, the Requiem Event and Merlin Prototype dropping in Arcade, and who should show up but Lady Avalon, Summer Ibuki, Summer Erice and a Douman skin.
So if the two year lag theory is true, then British Summer should definitely be next year, once they've confirmed how popular the characters are and have had enough time to write/produce it. The real question is who the welfare and male skins are going to be. Muramasa, CasCu and Percival are all strong contenders...
Also, the Fae Knights featured in the most recent Morgan/Britomart event, though that event didn't have much of a story mode.
