Honestly as much as it's a completely understandable sentiment to hate the fuck out of Shinji, I feel like people who haven't played Hollow Ataraxia and willfully dismiss anything Shinji-adjacent as automatically Bad are missing The Point.

Shinji Matou is a terrible person, yes, but he

1) Only became this terrible because of the systematic abuse that the Matou household heaps onto its every living heir

2) Is undoubtedly made more terrible by the situation around him, AKA the holy grail war, empowering him to vent out his frustration via external violence AND to play into Zouken's unreasonable and abusive expectations

3) Is a minor who had no way out of his situation and has not existed outside it for long enough to ever have a chance to reexamine his life

Not only is his relationship with Sakura a very depressingly honest portrayal of sibling relationships under abusive parental figures, his single serious Hollow Ataraxia skit shows that, when the threat and pressure for him to be bad clears, he's Very Quick to understand not only how much bad he's done, but that the only reasonable way out of it would be to leave town and cut himself off from the Matou household, because with how much hurt there's been it won't do anyone any good for him to stick around the people he's hurt.

Shinji is a terrible dude, but he's still a severely traumatized child, and without that crucial bit of him recognizing his faults in HA a person's view of him is wholly incomplete, because he's nothing much than a villain in the original VA.

In short, HA is the best piece of Stay Night adjacent material and both of the Matou siblings deserve infinitely better.

My favorite bit of Hollow Ataraxia is that scene where a gang of side characters try to figure out who she's dating, and come to the conclusion that she might be dating a girl, doing a whole spiel like "love is love we gotta support them even if their life will be harsh for it." First of all because it's surprisingly based from a game that came out in 2005, but also and most importantly because it's a hilarious dialogue to give in a serie where 90% of the cast is rabidly bisexual. Fate/Stay Night had two girls fucking on screen.
