A few days ago I had called to make a doctor's appointment and had just very quickly written down what the woman on the phone said in Finnish on a notepad. All I had time to write was "tänään, klo 12" and then the doctor's first name, which I had spelt wrong in my haste (I missed the second "t"). So today my partner found a note that just said:
tänään klo 12, riita

How to read Finnish like right now
This is not a complete "how to be instantly perfect at Finnish" post or anything but this will get you far. (I hope you see something...)
You guys liked the other posts I made in this style so I hope this one will help you as well! I know many of you are new learners still so I'm trying to make posts for all levels.

(and the same in English for those of you who are still just starting, or who want to know how well they understood, or what have you)
Here's a post to everyone studying Finnish as a second language:
You are wonderful, incredibly brave, and every one of you speaks better Finnish than you think. Seriously, be proud of yourselves! Finnish is a jungle of grammar rules and if someone tries to mock you for not knowing all of them, I'll crawl in through their vents and steal all of their phone chargers until they learn to behave

Heya,
I'm a junior web-developer just trying to make it lol and a recent finnish citizen still trying to be fluent in the language. I mostly will talk about my programming projects and journaling in finnish. Feel free to stick around!
🌼🌼🌼
my preferred stack: react with typescript, express, mongodb (MERN).
I actually started with C language, and it taught me so much esp. pointers & mem management. I didn't fall in love with it though - and switched to web development. Started learning react with University of Helsinki's course, and found out that I reaaaaally love doing this! so I'm doing small projects here and there to learn more in general.
🌼🌼🌼
besides coding, i love cooking, running, and hoping to go back to bouldering one day. i play the piano a bit and also draw here and there!
i used to play ffxiv a lot - and hopefully i can get back into it when the next big expac comes. right now i'm more into city builders :3
🌼🌼🌼
nice to meet you!

Here are some "opposites" ("vastakohdat").
-> I have to admit "tuima" was a new word for me.
-> Also I put "ujo" as the opposite of "rohkea" (rather than "pelokas" or something meaning fearful), but I have quite often seen "rohkea" used to mean "outgoing" or "out there" as well as "brave", so I think this makes sense in Finnish (even though in English the opposite of "shy" isn't "brave")

Hello Finns (and Finnish speakers)!
I had a question about Finnish grammar. Am I right in thinking that for some islands you use the -lla ending and some the -ssa ending e.g. ‘Olen Islannissa’ vs ’Olen Maltalla’.
Is this difference about the size of the island? And if I don’t know which ending to use which should I hedge my bets with?
Kiitos!
