Five Idiots Look For a Cave - Chapter One
Summary: Laios and his sister Falin are hired to guard a wagon of provisions as it travels from the city of Neverwinter to the small frontier settlement of Phandalin. It seems like a dead easy job, but it quickly becomes more complicated when their employer is kidnapped by goblins, sending them on a wild goose chase across the most dangerous parts of the Sword Coast in search of him with a ragtag group of unlikely allies.
Or, I make the dunmeshi guys play through the Lost Mines of Phandelver, because why not.
A/N: This is such a weird project to tag and explain, but I'm going to try.
For those familiar with Delicious In Dungeon, but not Dungeons & Dragons: The Lost Mines of Phandelver is the scenario/campaign that's provided in the starter set that you can buy for Dungeons & Dragons. I've run this campaign a bunch of times during my years playing Dungeons & Dragons and I thought the characters of dunmeshi were just begging to be dropped into a D&D game. So, that's what I did. The plot of this story is the campaign, Lost Mines of Phandelver, and whenever the characters need to do something, I roll dice to see whether they can do it or not. Combat, investigation, everything. I am literally playing this game by myself and then converting it into a fic.
For those familiar with Dungeons & Dragons, but not Delicious In Dungeon: Delicious In Dungeon is an anime set in a fantasy world where dungeon diving is a well-known career choice. The setting and characters are such a good match to Dungeons & Dragons that I had to change very little to get the characters to fit into a Forgotten Realms setting.
All that to say, the story should be digestible by anyone, even if you're not familiar with both fandoms.
Also, just a warning that I don't really have an in depth plan for this story, so I'm going to add tags and relationships as I go. I really like Chilchuck/Laios and Falin/Marcille, so those are the two pairings most likely to be added, but no promises either way. I'll make sure to warn if I add anything at the beginning of each chapter.
Laios Touden and his sister Falin stood by while the wagon they had been paid to accompany was loaded up with supplies. Young men barely more than boys hauled barrels and burlap sacks of provisions up into the old warped bed of the wagon, more passing up shovels, pickaxes and crowbars. Laios counted about twelve sacks of flour, seven casks of salted pork, two kegs of strong ale, five lanterns, and a small barrel of oil.
It was early, just an hour before dawn, but the south gate out of the city of Neverwinter was already starting to bustle with traffic. Mostly it was wagons not unlike their own, though filled with produce and other products from the farms circling the city that served to feed the swollen populace within the city walls. From farther north the smell of baking bread and roasting meat signaled the beginning of breakfast for the many people packed in close behind thick the stone walls.
Laios was ready to leave the city. He had grown up in the far north, surrounded by rolling fields, freezing cold fjords, and winter lashed forests. He had lived in a lot of places since he had left his home, but cities were never his favorite. There were too many people, too close, all smelling and talking and leaving their things everywhere. He was looking forward to being outside the city walls for a while, but they had to wait until the wagon was full before they could leave.
“Toudens!” a boisterous voice called from the main thoroughfare.
Falin, standing beside him and watching the loading of the wagon with more interest than Laios, smiled and raised her hand at the call. Slower, Laios raised his hand as well, to wave to their most recent employer.
A dwarf with rust colored red hair and beard sitting atop a pretty dapple gray pony split from the little stream of people leaving the city through the south gate and came toward Laios and the steadily filling wagon. Following behind him was an older human man wearing chain mail and riding on a three quarter sized bay mare with another small dwarf with a thick black beard witting sideways on the horse’s haunches behind him.
“Mr. Rockseeker,” Laios greeted him as he pulled his horse up close. He didn’t step down to talk to Laios, but he didn’t begrudge him. Laios wondered how the dwarf had managed to get onto the horse in the first place.
“Please, call me Gundren,” Mr. Rockseeker said with a twinkling smile. His nose and cheeks were ruddy red above his red beard. “Mr. Rockseeker was my father.”
Laios stared at Gundren blankly until he heard Falin snort out a laugh and he realized that the nonsensical statement was a joke. He quickly barked a laugh out that felt false even to his ears. But, if Gundren noticed, it didn’t show on his face that Laios could tell.
“It looks like everyone is here, so I hope you don’t mind if I introduce you to my nephew-” Gundren started to say before being interrupted by Falin.
“Oh, actually! We’re still waiting for a friend of mine who offered to come along,” she explained with a pleasant smile.
Gundren’s face did something too complicated for Laios to follow. “A friend?” he asked uncertainly.
“Who’s everyone?” Laios asked, wondering if Gundren had meant him and Falin. He thought you usually would say ‘both’ instead of ‘everyone’ if you were just addressing two people, though he was no stranger to being wrong when it came to things like that.
“He means me,” a surly voice from near Laios’ hip grumbled, making him jump about a foot in the air and turn around.
Laios hadn’t heard anyone approach, but a halfling man with short brown hair peppered with a few fine gray hairs and big ears was standing right beside him, his arms folded in front of his chest. He had a soft looking green muffler looped around his neck and worn leather armor over a plain white shirt and dark pants. And, he apparently noticed Laios staring, as he threw a nasty look up at Laios after a few second of him looking a little too intently.
He was usually pretty bad at interpreting people’s expressions, but it was hard to misunderstand that kind of look.
Laios tuned back into Falin and Gundren’s conversation just in time to see them get interrupted by Marcille stumbling up to them, panting and bracing her hands on her knees to catch her breath. Her long blonde hair was braided in a complicated style that left half of it piled on top of her head, and half it hanging long down her back and she was wearing a pretty blue dress that looked warm but a little impractical for hard travel. As well as her spell book and quarterstaff of course.
“I’m so sorry I’m late!” she gasped. “I told the innkeeper to wake me up, but she never came! I ran the whole” she paused to take another gasping breath, “way here!”
“I won’t be able to pay another person,” Grundren said to Laios, turning his back on the two women.
“Falin and I will split our pay with her. She’s a good friend of ours. She’s trustworthy,” Laios explained, he hoped sufficiently, for Gundren.
Gundren’s eyebrows did some wiggling, shadowing his small dark eyes for a moment, but then he sighed and his shoulders slumped, and the warm smile and the twinkling eyes were back as if they had never left.
“Well, that’s alright then. Anyway, I wanted to introduce you all to my nephew, Senshi,” he said, turning to gesture to the two men behind him. The human man had helped the dwarf off the tall horse and he was walking up to the small group. “He’ll be accompanying the rest of you on the wagon to Phandalin.”
A chorus of hellos in various levels of enthusiasm came from the small group gathered by the side of the wagon. Senshi looked a lot like Gundren, if the coloring was a lot darker and his face a lot less expressive. Senshi had a long thick wavy beard that matched his thick wavy hair and a slightly receding hairline. His eyebrows were thick and his eyes were small, dark and keen. It was hard to read Senshi’s expression. Laios suspected that was probably true even for people who weren’t him.
“With that, I’ll have to bid farewell,” Gundren said with a little half bow from the top of his pony. “I look forward to meeting with the rest of you in Phandalin.”
“We won’t be traveling together?” the halfling man spoke up. He looked uncertainly at Laios and the others, before turning a frustrated expression up at Gundren.
“It’s faster to travel by horse than by wagon and I have some business to finish up in Phandalin before you all get there. But, you all won’t be far behind me,” Gundren said, already turning his pony around. The human man was mounting his mare, as well, turning her nose toward the south gate. “Take good care of those supplies!” he called over his shoulder as he rejoined the press of people heading toward the walls of the city.
The five left behind awkwardly glanced around at each other. Laios, Falin and Marcille stood together, looking down at the two smaller men who would apparently be their traveling companions for the next two or three days.
While they had been talking, the last of the supplies had been loaded into the wagon and the men who had been doing the loading had left. There was nothing to keep them there but uncertainty about their new companions.
Finally, the halfling man broke the silence with a derisive sniff. “I’ll drive the wagon,” he said. “The rest of you can ride in the back until we get out of the crowd.”
With that, he stepped away from the others and jumped a little to reach the bench at the front of the wagon and confidently took the reins. He looked over his shoulder impatiently and the others took the hint.
“Uh, right. Thanks!” Laios said, probably way too late by the way that the halfling man sucked his teeth at Laios, but Falin always said better late than never.
His chain mail clinking, Laios climbed up into the wagon behind Marcille and Falin, who had already claimed the most comfortable spots on top of the flour sacks. He reached back behind him to help pull the dwarf man, Senshi, up into the wagon as well and got a friendly nod in thanks. Together, he and the other man had to make do trying to find a comfortable spot between the tools and barrels.
Once everyone had stopped shifting, the halfling man flicked the reins and the old horses hitched to the wagon started off, pulling the rattling wooden wheels across cobblestones out of Neverwinter and south along the well maintained High Road toward their destination.
---
They made camp the first night in a little windswept area off the left side of the road alongside a number of other travelers. Their campfires flickered orange in the moonlight, lighting up the worn cobblestones of the road even if it was too dark for anyone to keep moving. The air was brisk since the shoreline was close, close enough that you could hear the soft crashing of waves on the beach in the small silences between the campsites.
“I’m surprised they only gave us five ration packs each,” Marcille said into the silence as they all sat around the fire munching away at the hard bread, dried meat and sharp cheese that had been wrapped up in wax paper for them by the same store that had loaded the wagon up for Gundren.
“It shouldn’t take us more than two days to get to Phandalin,” Chilchuck answered her from around a mouthful of bread. Chilchuck Tims was the halfling man. After half a day of traveling by wagon, Laios had finally worked up the courage to ask and was pleasantly surprised when he answered.
“Still, tis foolish to not prepare for a longer trip. Who knows what trouble we may meet on the road,” the dwarf, Senshi, said as he looked down and rubbed the dried meat between his thick blunt fingers. Laios wondered if he was trying to soften it with his hands first. He wondered if it worked.
“Senshi is right,” Laios said after a second. “If it does end up taking us longer than two days to reach Phandalin, we’ll be in a real bind.”
“We’re not going to die if we have to go a day or two without food,” Chilchuck responded, but he looked a little unhappy at the thought.
Laios shared a look with Falin at that. He supposed that was true, but he had gone without eating before on expeditions that went wrong and it wasn’t something he wanted to repeat if he could help it.
“What made you take this job, Chilchuck?” Marcille asked after an awkward moment of silence. “You seemed surprised to see other people.”
Chilchuck frowned back at her. “What made you take this job?” he asked back.
Undeterred, Marcille answered, “Well, I didn’t really take it so much as I agreed to tag along.” Turning to Falin, she asked, “What made you guys take it?”
“Laios saw the job posting at the guild,” Falin explained as she broke off a piece of her cheese and offered it to Marcille who hummed happily as she popped it in her mouth. “He’s my brother and I often accompany him on jobs that take him out of the city.”
“Yep,” Laios added, thinking back. “Falin has saved my life more times than I could count. But, this job sounded easy and straight forward. ‘10 gold to escort provisions to Phandalin with option to make more. For reliable persons only.’ “ Laios recited from memory. “Seemed just like the thing for me and Falin.”
“Ye belong to an adventurer’s guild, then?” Senshi asked Laios with a raised eyebrow.
Laios wrinkled his nose as he realized that, even if it was true, saying he was part of the adventurer’s guild was probably a little misleading.
“I only just joined a month ago. I’m still pretty green. Easy jobs like this are the only ones I’m qualified for,” Laios said hesitantly.
“But, Laios is really amazing in a fight! That’s how he got into the guild, by proving himself in a tournament. He’ll climb the ranks in no time!” Falin added with an enthusiastic grin thrown in Laios’ direction. Even if the praise made him more self-conscious, it warmed something in his heart to have her support and encouragement.
“Thanks,” he mumbled, scratching at the back of his neck.
“And, you’re just tagging along?” Chilchuck asked Marcille, doubt thick in his tone.
“Uh, well,” Marcille fumbled, seeming a little taken off guard by the question.
“Marcille is a friend of mine from temple,” Falin jumped in to say. “She just moved to Neverwinter and we’ve been showing her around. We didn’t want to leave her alone in the city for however long the job took, so we invited her along.”
Marcille and Falin shared a speaking look, something that Laios could recognize from the outside but not totally understand. Sometimes it seemed like they could have whole conversations with just their faces, in a few brief seconds snatched between words. It seemed an impossible kind of skill, one that he envied and was a little mystified by.
“That’s right,” Marcille agreed, her nose and ears a shade pinker than they had been a moment ago. “But, you still haven’t answered my question. I understand why Mr. Rockseeker wanted someone like Laios to guard his provisions on the road to Phandalin, but I’m not really sure how you fit into this.” She gave Chilchuck a piercing look, one he returned with an unhappy twist of his lips.
But, after only a moment, he sighed and sagged back against the fallen log he had sat himself against.
“Me and Gundren go way back. We used to go dungeon diving together back when I was younger. He was always decent to me. All he told me was that he had some kind of crazy opportunity opening up in Phandalin that I would want to get in on and to meet him there by the gates. He didn’t mention I’d be riding in a wagon with a bunch of strangers while he went on ahead,” Chilchuck finished with a dirty look aimed at the dirt by his foot. Laios didn’t have to be good at understanding people to understand that Chilchuck probably wished he could aim that look at Gundren instead.
“Oh, that’s awful,” Marcille sighed.
“Aye, I’m sorry to hear that. My uncle isn’t always the most considerate. Especially when he’s on a job,” Senshi added with a sorrowful nod of his head.
Chilchuck waved his hand, as if he could swat the condolences offered to him out of the air. “Whatever,” he said. “What’s done is done. I owe you all an apology, anyway. I didn’t mean to take my bad mood out on all of you.”
“Well, it’s a bit understandable,” Falin offered with a smile.
“Yeah, we didn’t take it personally,” Laios said with a shrug. He had assumed that the behavior he’d seen so far had been Chilchuck’s normal personality. It was sort of nice to hear that it wasn’t.
“Gundren is your uncle, huh?” Laios asked, changing the focus to Senshi. “Is there anything you can tell us about him? I only got to speak to him a little bit before taking this job.”
“Aye, he is my uncle, though our family is large and he is one of five uncles of mine,” Senshi explained. “There’s not much I can tell you about him, unfortunately. He and two of my uncles do much treasure hunting in the mountains about Neverwinter. I suspect that’s how you came into contact with him?” Senshi asked Chilchuck.
“Yep,” Chilchuck said. “I’m a locksmith by trade, but I have a reputation for being skilled at disarming dwarvish traps. He hired me way back when I was just starting out and is half the reason I have that reputation.”
“Do you have an interest in treasure hunting, Senshi?” Falin asked curiously.
Senshi stared into their crackling fire, his usually expressionless face becoming sorrowful. “Nay, not I. Not anymore.”
Laios looked around at the others, hoping someone more skilled at talking would interrupt the sad lonesome silence that had descended over Senshi. Unfortunately, it looked like everyone else was casting around to each other for the same thing.
Luckily, it was Senshi himself who broke the long silence. “I suspect my uncle thinks me a bit of a layabout. I don’t do any of the traditional dwarven pursuits. Mining, blacksmithing, gold prospecting. I’m sure whatever job he wants me to help with it will be something like that.”
“And, what is it that you like to do, Senshi?” Falin asked gently.
Senshi looked up for the first time since he had started talking.
“Cooking,” he said decisively. “I love to cook.”
Falin clapped her hands in joy. “Oh that’s wonderful!” she exclaimed.
“What do you like to cook most?” Marcille asked.
“Do you have a specialty?” Chilchuck asked with interest.
Laios smiled as the conversation lightened and turned lively as everyone talked and shared about food, their favorite foods, their family recipes, regional specialties they knew of.
It seemed like the ice had been broken and even if they weren’t friends they were well on their way to getting there.
---
The next morning they got an early start, eating their third ration for breakfast quickly before cleaning up the last embers of their campfire and packing up so they could get back on the road. They were not on the high road for long before they turned left onto a small dirt track with a simple sign marking it as the Triboar Trail.
It’s this road that they would take for the rest of the day and hopefully reach the small settlement town of Phandalin before nightfall.
Laios didn’t know much about the town of Phandalin. From what little he heard from other people in the guild, it was a tiny town just on the edge of the wilderness that was built on the remnants of another older settlement. It sat on the edge of the foothills of the Sword Mountains and was mostly populated by miners and the people who ran businesses that served them.
This part was the part of the journey that he had been hired for. The Triboar Trail was really that, just a worn down dirt trail leading off into untamed and largely uninhabited woods and meadows. All manner of creatures, bandits and beasts populated those lands and would have likely loved to get their hands on a wagon full of supplies like what they had.
A shiver of anticipation ran down Laios’ back as he imagined the types of monsters known to haunt the woods around them. There were stirges, of course, terrible little mosquito like creatures about the length of your arm that attacked suddenly and would try to drain their victims of blood. Ghouls could come out at night, ethereal specters of long dead travelers looking for warm bodies to possess. Ogres preferred the foothills, but they could wander close enough that running into one traveling afield for hunting wouldn’t be out of the question. Then there were goblins, orcs, owlbears! The list just went on.
Laios couldn’t suppress a whine of excitement at the thought. The sound, as quiet as it was, was still noticed by the halfling sitting beside him on the bench at the front of the wagon. Chilchuck jumped a little at the sound and gave Laios an uncertain look.
“Oh, uh,” Laios fumbled, trying to think of an explanation that didn’t include explaining that he was just excited to finally be entering monster country. “Just had a tickle in my throat,” he landed on lamely.
Chilchuck gave him a suspicious squint, but turned back to examining the road in front of them.
They continued on like that throughout the morning. Marcille and Falin occasionally walked beside the horses, the two old things walking slow enough that the women had no issues keeping up with them at a brisk walk. Senshi said his legs were too short to keep up and instead enjoyed relaxing on the flour sacks and making small talk.
It turned out that Senshi had traveled all over the world cooking and learning new cooking techniques. Marcille, the most well traveled of all of them, was especially impressed with him and got him to talking about all the far flung places he had visited.
Unfortunately for Laios, not a single monster accosted them that whole morning, even though both he and Chilchuck in front of the wagon were trying to keep a weather eye out for any movement in the brush on the sides of the road.
That is, until they reached a road block just before noon.
Just as they turned a bend in the road, they came upon a distressing sight. Two horses lying dead on their sides in the center of the road, numerous arrows pointing up out of their sides.
Chilchuck pulled the wagon to a stop as soon as they saw them and everyone stopped and stared.
“Those are Gundren and Sildar’s horses,” Senshi said slowly, looking at the two dead horses from between Chilchuck and Laios.
“Sildar?” Laios asked.
“The human man that was with Gundren yesterday morning. His bodyguard,” Senshi explained.
“I don’t like this. This feels like a set up,” Chilchuck whispered, furrowing his brow and barely raising his voice enough to be heard by the two men sitting right beside him.
“Even if we don’t trust it, we won’t be able to get the wagon past unless we move the horses,” Laios said with a thoughtful frown.
“Maybe you could use your magic to move them?” Falin asked Marcille.
Marcille fidgeted with her cape, tugging on the silky red ribbon at the front. “I couldn’t use mage hand to move them, they’re too heavy. I can only manage ten pounds at most.”
Laios sighed and jumped down from the wagon. “I’ll go investigate and try to move them. You guys take cover and let me know if you see anything, okay?”
Everyone nodded except Senshi who climbed down from the wagon, as well. “I’ll help ye,” he said gruffly. “Moving the horses will go faster if we work together.”
Chilchuck jumped back into the wagon and took cover behind a barrel, drawing his shortbow and knocking an arrow, his keen brown eyes scanning the thick foliage on either side of the road. Marcille also drew close the wagon, crouching down by a wheel and clenching her staff in both hands and looking a little seasick. Falin, however, stepped out front holding her mace menacingly in front of her, the sharp metal edges at the top glinting dangerously in the dappled light through the trees.
Laios tried to approach the horses cautiously, but his armor clicked and rang out as he walked. Senshi was quieter, but much slower. As they approached the horses, Laios agreed that they were the same ones he had seen Gundren and the human man riding yesterday morning. Even the tack on the horses was the same. Examining the blanket and saddle, Laios also noticed that the saddlebags of both horses were open, the insides looking dark and empty.
“I’ll take one set of legs, you take the other,” Senshi said, approaching the back legs of the pony.
“Wait, Senshi. Does it look like their saddlebags have been looted?” Laios asked, pointing at the bag he was looking at on the bay mare.
Senshi barely had time to make an inquisitive hum before the sound of a twig snapping behind him sent him and Laios turning just in time to see a small green creature sneaking through the underbrush with a small rudimentary bow drawn on them.
“LAIOS, LOOK OUT!” Falin shouted, pointing her mace at the goblin who had just startled them both.
Before either of them could react, an arrow was fired at them from the opposite side of the road, arching straight at Laios’ back. A flash of incredible burning pain lanced through his back, the pain so incredible that his vision fuzzed and blurred for a moment. He put his hand to his shoulder and felt hot blood against his fingertips, the soft wood of a small arrow sticking out of his back.
Beside him, Laios heard Senshi grunt and turned his head to see his new friend pierced through with an arrow, as well. Senshi was reaching out to touch a small arrow fletched in black feathers that was protruding from his upper arm, dribbling bright red blood.
“Laios!” Falin shouted again, her voice cracking on his name in a way that made his already racing heart stutter in his chest. Then, Falin quickly shouted a word that made Laios ears ring, her hand tracing a strange pattern in the air, before a flame-like radiance shot down from the sky at the goblin they had first seen.
Just as the light flickered in the air, Falin’s magic building above the goblin, the creature dodged to the side, missing the blast of sacred energy by a hair’s breadth.
The little green man growled, his voice high and stringent, making him sound like a saw working through a green piece of wood. Popping up from his rolling jump, he ran at Laios, a short chipped scimitar appearing in his long fingered hand.
Laios watched the blade come at him as if in slow motion, the goblin’s mouth fixed in a vicious snarl, his thin dark hair flying out behind his bulbous head. At the last second he leaned back out of the way of the strike and drew his own sword, his hand sure on the grip through hours and hours of training.
Behind the first goblin, yet another one appeared, this one also wielding a rusty damaged scimitar. It dodged around Laios, who was still engaged with the first goblin he had seen, and went straight for Senshi. Senshi, who had just yanked the arrow from his arm, threw up a hand desperately to protect himself from the attack, but still suffered a grievous wound across his arm that sprayed blood across the dirt road.
With a grunt, Senshi raised his greataxe high above his head. The goblin, still grinning in glee at landing a hit on the dwarf, didn’t see the axe coming until it cleaved his skull cleanly in half.
“Great job, Senshi,” Laios gasped, raising his own greatsword up at an angle to swipe at the goblin he was facing off with.
His own sword, heavier, longer and carefully maintained, carved through the small body and brittle bones of his attacker like a hot knife through butter. The goblin collapsed in a bloody heap with barely a whimper.
“Shit, shit, shit!” Laios could faintly hear Chilchuck saying from over by the wagon.
An arrow flew from the wagon where Chilchuck was hiding, fired into the bushes where the first two arrows had been shot from.
Laios barely had a moment to process that Chilchuck had joined the fight before another arrow flew, this one decidedly not from Chilchuck, and struck him right in the neck. Laios hit the ground in a spray of dirt, blood welling from his neck. In a matter of seconds his body began to feel cold, his eyesight blurry, his heart sluggish in his chest. He could hear people calling his name, but it all sounded far away.
Time became smeary around Laios. He could hear people shouting, see movement in what little he could still see, but the sound of his own struggling heartbeat took up most of his awareness. He could feel the blood pump out of his own body with each squeeze of his heart, smell the salty copper of his own life spilling out onto the uncaring forest floor.
Then, familiar hands are yanking the arrows out of his body. He could feel the flesh tear and give away under the new violence, but no pain came. He felt cold, so cold. Those same hands pressed tight against his back and a rush of warmth and pain pulsed through him, like unseen hands were yanking his flesh back in place, knitting the holes closed with fury, his body put back together none too gently, but put back together none the less.
Laios gasped as he opened his eyes and they focused on the scene around him. Falin was kneeling over him, her hands still stained with his blood, two bloody arrows discarded on the ground nearby. Senshi was laying on his back beside him in the blood soaked dirt, an arrow sticking out of his chest.
Struggling, still feeling dizzy from blood loss, Laios climbed back to his feet, picking his greatsword up off the ground.
“Thanks,” he whispered to Falin as he stood up between her and the two goblins still hiding in the brush.
“I’m just glad you’re okay,” she said around teary eyes.
“You’ve got to get them out of cover!” Chilchuck shouted as he shot another arrow into the underbrush that the arrows were coming from, though from the sound he didn’t hit anything.
Another arrow flew out of the bushes, this time aimed right at Falin, but pinged the chain mail under her robe and fell uselessly to the ground by her feet.
“Ouch,” she grumbled, rubbing the spot on her chest.
“Did that thing just hit you in the boob?!” Marcille shrieked from near the wagon.
“Uh?” Falin responded uncertainly.
Marcille shouted something in a language that Laios didn’t understand and gestured with her staff. Three darts of light flew from her staff to the bushes, igniting them with pale blue light followed by a sound of agony and a wet thump as something hits the ground. Shortly after, the sound of fast footsteps receding into the woods could be heard.
“Whoa,” Laios said, his eyes huge as he turned back to look at a still panting Marcille, her staff still held out in front of her.
“Did the last one just run away?” Falin asked faintly.
“Forget that! Heal Senshi!” Chilchuck shouted, already crawling over the seat of the wagon and hurrying over to where Senshi was still laid out on his back.
“Oh! Right, of course!” Falin exclaimed, falling back to her knees and pulling the most recent arrow from where it had buried itself in Senshi’s chest. Falin spoke some strange words and traced a symbol on Senshi’s skin. A faint warm yellow glow emanated from her hands where she pressed them to Senshi’s torso and the wounds steadily closed, the blood marching backward back into his body as the puncture wounds pulled back together.
Senshi grunted, his unfocused eyes finally seeming to see them, tracking Falin and Laios and Chilchuck as he ran up to meet them, Marcille trailing behind.
“Did we find victory?” Senshi asked with a harsh groan as he pushed himself to sit up, Laios’ hand on his shoulder to steady him.
“We’re alive and they’re mostly not, but I don’t know if you’d call that victory,” Chilchuck said wryly.
“That was terrifying,” Marcille gasped with a hand to her chest. “Is this really what you two do for a living?” Marcille asked with a concerned look at Falin who only shrugged.
“Usually with less dying, but yeah mostly,” Laios said with a shrug of his own.
“Oh, my god,” Marcille breathed. “OH MY GOD!” she shouted after a second.
“Shush! Not so loud!” Chilchuck hissed at her. “Just because these goblins are dead doesn’t mean there’s not more hiding in the woods. We need to get out of here before the one that got away comes back with his friends.”
“But,” Laios said, sheathing his sword and turning to look at the dead horses still blocking the road. “If Gundren was caught in the same ambush we just were, then the goblins could be holding him hostage. We need to help him, right?” he asked, turning to the others.
“I agree. If Gundren is in trouble, we must help him,” Senshi said with a firm nod.
“I don’t think so!” Marcille exclaimed. “You two almost died and that was only four goblins! Now you want to stomp into their lair and what? Demand to speak to a manager? I don’t think that’s going to go over very well!”
“But, Marcille. The magic you just used was amazing! With you and Falin helping us, we’ll be able to save Gundren. I’m sure of it,” Laios said with a determined nod.
“Well… About that,” Falin said awkwardly. “That last healing spell kind of wiped me out. If someone gets hurt again, I won’t be able to heal them.”
“… Oh,” said Laios, caught flat footed by that thought.
“Yeah, ‘oh’,” Chilchuck sighed. “And, I’m too old to go charging into danger unprepared. The two of you aren’t all the way up to snuff either. Why don’t we take this wagon the rest of the way to Phandalin and then come back to investigate? At least that way our two mages will be at full power and you two will be back to full health.”
Laios looked down at the ground, at the two goblins crumbled and bleeding into the dirt, at the two horses still on their sides in the middle of the road. At the blood still crusted into his sword’s blade and his chain mail, still matted into Senshi’s beard and on Falin’s hands and knees.
“Okay,” he said finally. “You’re right. Let’s to Phandalin and come back tomorrow.”
There were mumbles of agreement as Chilchuck, Marcille and Falin went back to the wagon and Laios and Senshi turned back to their original goal of dragging the horses off the road.
“Do you truly think the goblins took my uncle?” Senshi asked as they stood up from pulling the second horse off the road.
“I do,” Laios said. “Horses have a lot more value to goblins than humans or dwarves do. They use them as pack animals and sometimes eat them. If the goblins shot your uncle’s horse, then they wanted him in particular. And, if they wanted him for some reason, then there’s a good chance he’s still alive wherever they’re hiding him.”
Senshi gave Laios a long calculating look before nodding slowly. “Thank you, Laios,” he said gruffly, before turning and walking back to the wagon.
Laios scratched his head for a moment, not sure what he did to deserve thanks. Whatever the reason, at least Senshi seemed reassured.

Best Underrated Anime Group D Round 2: #D6 vs #D4
#D6: Villainess dating game isekai
#D4: Two kids join in hunting monsters and uncovering secrets
Details and poll under the cut!
Tumblr media
#D6: My Next Life as a Villainess: All Routes Lead to Doom! (Otome Game no Hametsu Flag shika Nai Akuyaku Reijou ni Tensei shiteshimatta…)
youtube
Summary:
Most people would prefer being the protagonist of a world full of adventure, be it in a game or in another world. But, unfortunately, a certain girl is not so lucky. Regaining the memories of her past life, she realizes that she was reborn in the world of Fortune Lover—one of the games she used to play.
Unfortunately, the character she was reincarnated into—Catarina Claes—is the game's main antagonist, who faces utter doom in every ending. Using her extensive knowledge of the game, she takes it upon herself to escape from the chains of this accursed destiny.
However, this will not be an easy feat, especially since she needs to be cautious as to not set off death flags that may speed up the impending doom she is trying to avoid. Even so, to make a change that will affect the lives of everyone around her, she strives—not as the heroine—but as the villainess.
Propaganda:
This show is so much fun. The protagonist is a lovable girl himbo, who is completely oblivious to everyone around falling in love with her. It’s a bit of a harem anime, but with equal opportunities: the girls are just as enamored with the main character as the guys are. The increasingly dumber ways in which she thinks she’s going to meet her doom (she is supposed to be the villain of the story, after all) are a delight to behold.
Trigger Warnings: Incest, Rape/Non-Con. The main character gets assaulted like two or three times, but it’s not graphic. One of these instances, where a kiss is forced on her, is by her adoptive brother, who is also her cousin, who is one of her main love interests.

#D4: Karneval
youtube
Summary:
While in search of his precious friend, a young boy named Nai falls captive to a beautiful woman, whose looks are matched only by her taste for human flesh. Meanwhile Gareki, a clever thief, is in the midst of robbing her luxurious home. After causing a distraction, Gareki agrees to help Nai escape, but they are discovered upon the woman's return. As she transforms into a ghoulish monster, the boys flee.
On the run, Nai and Gareki are found by “Circus,” a government defense agency that deals with criminal activity too difficult for the police to handle and protects civilians from “varuga”—terrible monsters that devour humans for sustenance. In the hope that it will lead Nai to his missing friend, he and Gareki decide to join Circus. On their perilous journey, they face dangerous varuga and begin to uncover the secrets behind a shadowy organization known as Kafka.
Propaganda:
Karneval has two of the best protagonists I’ve ever seen. Gareki is superior to every other teenage boy protagonist in anime. His character arc, even in this one season that covers just a fraction of the manga, is so well-developed. I like that his arc is an emotionally driven coming-of-age and not a power fantasy.
Along with the main characters, Karneval has fantastic characters across the board. There is not a single supporting character I don't love (even the ones who annoy me). None of the female characters are reduced to love interests and are all unique and interesting, which can be hard to find sometimes in anime.
It is made by a female writer, which is always great to see, and for people who aren't really interested in romance, the anime is extremely friendship and found family driven. The found family aspect is really at the forefront of the series as Circus is not a glorified group and they don't get to have families which makes the bond between members so important.
The tone balance is amazing. In one episode, you can go on an emotional journey from laughing to crying in seconds. The plot is engaging with wild reveals and compelling mysteries to follow. The fantastical world is unique with the contrast of the dark monsters in a bright and colorful world. If you watch it in Japanese, the voice cast is so good and the soundtrack is also really good.
TL;DR it’s an interesting story with amazing characters to whom you will get attached.
Trigger Warnings: Graphic Depictions of Cruelty/Violence/Gore, Misrepresentation of Dissociative Identity Disorder (DID)

Ice Cold Part 13

Ice Cold Masterlist Main Masterlist
Tumblr media
It felt like the world had stopped turning. I stood in fearful disbelief, not wanting to accept my fate but unable to see a way out.
Van stood there with a casual stance like he was completely unaffected by my presence. And why would he be? The courageous force that had come over me had started to slip away the moment I heard his voice. Much as I was trying to desperately cling on to a shred of it, it was still slipping now. Pretty soon there would be nothing left.
Van sighed like he was exasperated with me, like he was scolding a naughty child. "Lyla... don't make me have to tell you again." Then his eyes flashed dangerously as he emphasised each word, sharp and precise. "DROP. IT. NOW!"
And just like that my gun slid from my fingers on to the carpet with a thud. I heard a gleeful snigger coming from behind but I ignored it. I couldn't look anywhere else except at Van. He was dressed like the other party goers in an immaculate tuxedo suit, and he cut quite the handsome figure. The thought occurred to me that in another life he probably would have stolen hearts, rather than stopped them from beating.
"Just get it over with then," I said, my voice quiet with a bitter tone.
"What's the rush?" I heard the voice from behind me. "Maybe we can have a little fun first, hey sweetheart?"
I didn't have to look to imagine the lascivious sneer on the piece of shit who stood behind me. I shuddered. Van just lifted his gaze to look at him briefly, then it was back to me, completely impassive.
So this was going to be it? Was he just going to hand me over like an unwanted possession? I couldn't control the surge of dismay that crashed over me, and with it the realisation of the ridiculous notion that I'd thought that maybe there was some kind of connection between the two of us.
He ignored the comments from behind me, sighing again, reaching into the inside pocket of his suit jacket. "How many times I gotta tell you? How many times I gotta tell you not to come after me?"
I stayed quiet, watched fearfully as he pulled out a silencer and began screwing it on to the end of the pistol. He took his time, eyes locked on me whilst he did it. I swallowed, hard, as he brought the gun around to point at me once again.
A grunt of disapproval came from the other man as he chuntered to himself. "Ah man... what a waste..."
I thought I saw a flicker of something cross Van's features, but I couldn't be sure. Tears stung my eyes and I tried to blink them away.
"You know what the drill is... on your knees."
I considered resisting, but what was the point? I quickly sank down on to my knees. At least if Van was going to end my life here and now it would be a small mercy that the creep behind me wouldn't get his filthy murderous hands on me. I heard him now, that repulsive chuckle again. "Who's giving the orders now bitch?"
I kept my eyes fixed firmly on the floor, waiting...
The shot passed clean over my head and although it was muffled by the silencer it still rang in my ears. Shock immediately gave way to confusion as I heard an agonised groan from behind me and I twisted around just in time to see the other man sway and then slump to the floor, a gaping bloody hole where his right eye used to be.
I let out a terrified whimper, my hand going up to my mouth, and I turned again to Van. His expression hadn't changed, not even a ripple on the surface. I opened my mouth to speak, my lips forming wordlessly around a question that never came. Why?
Our eyes locked for what seemed like a long moment but in reality was probably only a few seconds before he wrenched his gaze away, sliding the gun into the waistband of his trousers and striding past me to the lifeless figure on the floor.
"Room 510," he stated, nodding his head to indicate a room across the corridor and then stooping down to grab the man's feet, dragging him roughly. "Open it."
And I did. I followed his orders just like I was politely doing a good deed for the day, not assisting a deadly assassin with hiding a freshly murdered corpse. I could have run away and sounded the alarm. I probably could have even retrieved my gun from the floor and pressed it to Van's head whilst he busied himself dragging his victim across the corridor. But I didn't. I even held the door for him whilst he manoeuvred the body inside the room, leaving a rusty red trail of blood on the patterned carpet.
Van pulled the dead man into the bathroom and then I heard him grunt with exertion as I presumed he was lifting him into the bathtub. I lingered just inside the room, watching the door slowly shut behind me, knowing I should slip through and leave but not being able to do so. I was stunned and frightened but also bound by something invisible. Something that rendered me incapable of being that version of myself I so desperately wanted to be.
Van reappeared in the bathroom doorway, a less pristine version now, dark red spatters stained his white shirt and his hair fell over his eyes. He pulled at his tie, letting it fall open around his neck, loosening the top few buttons of his shirt as he addressed me.
"Do you have any idea what my employers would do to me if they knew what had gone down tonight?"
I pressed my back against the door, suddenly feeling very small without my heels on. Before I could answer, his eyes slipped down to my upper arm where the bullet had grazed me. It stung and a sticky red rivulet of blood had run down my limb and dried there. Van frowned. "You're hurt." He stated.
"I'm fine, it's nothing," I replied, mildly surprised that he'd even commented, but whatever had prompted him to was short-lived. The frown melted away, his mouth set in a hard line as he spoke again, angry now.
"You weren't even supposed to be here tonight. What the fuck changed?"
How the hell did he know that?
I found my voice, clearing my throat before I answered him. "Well... I begged my boss to let me come if you must know."
He lifted an eyebrow quizzically. "And why's that?"
"So I could take you out."
The words just spilled out and I wasn't sure where my boldness came from. Maybe it was the knowledge that Van had killed one of his own tonight so that I could live.
I expected some kind of vicious retort but instead a sly smile appeared on his lips. "Right... so how's that working out for you then?"
I wanted to retaliate, part of me angered by the mocking insinuation that I wasn't a threat to him, but I quickly checked myself. Just because of his actions so far I couldn't lull myself into a false sense of security that he wouldn't kill me himself... or worse. Maybe he just meant to keep me alive to toy with me. But games didn't last forever. There was always a winner and a loser eventually.
I watched him warily as he eyed me with that taunting amusement, stepping closer. I moved sideways, away from the door and away from him, my back sliding against the wall.
"I don't think I can trust you," he said, moving nearer still, countering my movement. "You always seem to have a weapon sneakily tucked away somewhere..."
"I'm unarmed," I stated, indicating my skin tight dress. "You saw me drop my gun. Where the hell would I hide another weapon?"
"I don't know. You tell me..." Van said, the sharp edges gone from his voice now.
As he trailed off he placed both hands on my shoulders and spun me quickly around, roughly pushing me up against the wall. I let out a gasp, my hands splayed on the wall as he grasped my hips with strong fingers and pressed himself into me. I tried to breathe deeply and ignore the spark that immediately lit deep down in my core as his head dipped down so he could whisper in my ear. "Like I said I don't trust you... I'm gonna have to check."
Every nerve in my body bristled as he moved his hands over me, all the time his head bent over so close I could feel the heat of his breath on my neck. He started at the tops of my shoulders and travelled down my spine, then up again to my collar bones and down and over my breasts. My nipples instantly stiffened as his hands slid over the silk material, making my breath hitch.
"Hmm... what about down here?" He whispered into my neck, his fingers continuing their journey south.
Suddenly and without warning he grabbed the material on either side of the slit in my dress and pulled it apart in one swift motion, tearing it all the way up the centre, exposing me right down to my underwear.
"What the fuck are you doing?" I gasped.
He didn't answer, just let out a small, low laugh. I screwed my eyes shut, trying to clear my mind, trying desperately not to show the effect his touch had on me but it was no use. My body betrayed me. My legs trembled as his fingers moved down the outside of my thighs then crept slowly inwards. His touch was surprisingly gentle, his fingertips just lightly grazing the sensitive flesh of my inner thighs.
"You know, one of these days you're gonna have to stop lying to yourself about what you want."
He was so close I could feel his lips brush my neck and I didn't trust myself to reply, knowing he'd be able to hear the arousal in my voice if I did. My breathing was already coming shallow and fast as his fingertips edged ever closer to my heat, just catching the lace of my underwear. I wanted to move, to press my thighs together, the need to feel something so badly it took me all my restraint not to press myself into his hands.
Pull yourself together Lyla!
"I don't know what the hell you're talking about," I managed, voice shaky and unsteady.
Van withdrew his hands and I felt the pressure of his body behind me disappear as he stepped back. I should have been relieved but I immediately yearned for the feeling of his touch again. I took a deep breath, trying to compose myself, grasping at the edges of my torn dress and pulling it across my body before I turned around.
There was a solitary chair backed up against the wall and I watched as Van took a seat, a relaxed pose, his legs splayed, his hands resting loosely in his lap. In contrast to his laidback posture his eyes were hard and unforgiving as he regarded me from across the room. Unease trickled like ice water through my veins.
"How long you gonna keep this up? You think just because you catch a bunch of bad guys it's gonna make up for the fact that deep down inside you're just a bad girl crying out for someone to teach you a lesson?"
Fuck... his words simmered in me as I maintained his challenging stare, wondering how to react. Was it a threat or something else? There wasn't a hint of any emotion evident to help me decide, just the knowledge that if he'd wanted me dead I wouldn't be standing here now, living and breathing.
"What sort of lesson?" I found myself saying, my curious desire overtaking the rational part of my mind that berated me for playing along with his game.
"Come here and I'll show you."
As he spoke he pulled the pistol free and reached over to lay it down on the table top nearby. My eyes flitted between it and him but I didn't move.
"Don't make me come over there Lyla."
The edge of threat in his voice spurred me into action and I slowly moved forwards, still clinging on to the fabric of my ruined dress, taking timid steps forward until I was within his reach. He shot a hand out and grabbed me roughly by the wrist, pulling me even closer and I stumbled forward, knocking into his leg.
"Sit right here," he ordered, pulling me down to his level so I was straddling his right thigh, a leg on either side.
My senses were in overdrive being this close to him, our bodies connected, his captivating gaze burning into me. My heart thudded as I tried to anticipate his next move and I watched as he reached up and pulled the tie from where it hung loosely around his neck, running it through his fingers.
"I know exactly what you need. Don't forget I've seen you. I know the kinda stuff you dream about."
His words stoked the fire already burning in me and I immediately felt resistance. I needed to try and hold on to that minuscule scrap that was left of the moral and righteous part of myself that seemed to be spiralling further and further away with each encounter.
"You don't know anything about me," I countered. "How could you?"
"Oh you'd be surprised," he answered, darting his hands forward to grab both of my wrists in a vice-like grip, forcing me to release my dress which now gaped wide open.
I could do nothing as he used the tie to bind my hands, pulling the material tight enough to make me wince. Then he raised up my bound wrists, slipping them over his head so they came to rest around his neck. I was close, much too close. And there was nothing I could do about it.
"There's nowhere to hide now," he said as if reading my thoughts.
My head was a fog as I tried to think straight and focus on something that wasn't him, but it was impossible. He filled every one of my senses. The musky scent of his cologne, the sounds of his deep measured breathing, his touch as I felt his hands slide on to my hips, the heat of his leg between my thighs. My heart raced so wildly I felt light-headed, intoxicated by him.
His fingers curled firmer around my hips and he suddenly pressed my body down, shifting his leg as he did, creating an unexpected friction that made me suck in a breath.
"All those guys you fuck, letting them use you like the dirty girl you are... not one of them satisfies you do they? Tell me... it's me you think of, isn't it?"
His questions caught me off guard. It was like he was looking into my darkest fantasies. And how could I answer truthfully? If I admitted my true feelings then I wouldn't be able to lie to myself anymore. And then what?
"That's not true!" I protested, but my voice came out breathy, my whole body pulsing with desire and arousal.
"Don't fucking lie to me," he warned. "You've dreamt of me fucking you haven't you? Pinning you up against the wall... my hands around your throat..."
His eyes darkened and his fingers dug into my hips, pushing my body down again as he clenched the muscles in his thigh, sending a shudder through my core which radiated out through my entire body. I was teetering on the edge of control, threatening to fall at any moment, turned on beyond belief.
A small smile flickered on his lips, knowledge and satisfaction of what this was doing to me. "Just admit it... it's that simple..."
I tried desperately not to react to the feel of his warm thigh solid between my legs, how the taut muscle felt rubbing against my sweet spot through the sheer lace of my underwear. He pushed and pulled at my hips, relentlessly again and again. A desperate whimper escaped me even though I tried to hold it back, my cheeks burning with shame.
His eyes simmered with a hunger that seemed to scorch my very soul. "Tell me what you want. I wanna hear you beg for it..."
And just like that something snapped and unravelled inside me. The words tumbled out of me, breathless and needy. "I want you... please... I fucking need you."
His eyes pooled with dark desire. "Good girl... but I don't think you're ready just yet. You're gonna have to work for it. Show me what you want."
He clutched my hips even harder but my body bucked of its own accord, grinding against him, the resulting friction on my sensitive clit so delicious that I closed my eyes and threw my head back. I felt Van's lips on my neck, kissing and sucking hard at my skin, his teeth grazing my flesh.
The sensation made me drive my hips even harder, and once I started I couldn't stop. I could feel the dampness pooling at the apex of my thighs and soaking my panties through, igniting my desire even more as I rolled my hips hard against him. Every fibre of my being was desperate and hungry and yearning. And all for him.
His name fell from my lips repeatedly like some kind of mantra as waves of pressure started to build in my core.
"Look at me!" He commanded. "Don't take your eyes off me."
One of his hands found its way to my hair as he roughly grabbed a fistful and leant in so he was just inches away.
My eyes flicked open to be met by his unrelenting gaze and I was caught there as my climax started to wash over me like a tidal wave, so powerful that I cried out, my whole body convulsing.
I was still shuddering with aftershocks as Van lunged forward, closing the small gap between us, kissing me fiercely and stealing my breath. I responded with the same passion, wild thoughts raging through my head like a hurricane.
He grasped my thighs, pulling my legs up around him so that I was fully straddling his lap, his kisses feverish as his lips left mine and made their way to my neck once more. I pressed myself into him with everything I had, feeling the unmistakeable stiffness of his arousal, coaxing a groan from him.
"Christ... what the fuck are you doing to me?"
I heard him growl into my neck, then suddenly he wrenched his mouth away, rising to his feet and lifting me easily in one swift motion.
He crossed quickly over to the bed, my legs still latched around his hips, my heart racing with anticipation as he bent forward to lay me down, but he didn't press himself into me like I was expecting. He slid my bound wrists from over his neck, hurriedly stepping back, the heat rapidly draining from his eyes as his expression began to harden.
"This wasn't supposed to happen," he muttered, the same conflicted look of anguish staining his features that I'd seen that night in my kitchen.
"But Van..." I began, my words cutting off abruptly as I watched him delve a hand inside his jacket, swiftly withdrawing a sharp flick-blade which caught the moonlight flooding in through the window as he held it up and started advancing on me.
I frantically scrambled backwards on the bed, whimpers of fear clawing their way up my throat. How could our impassioned embrace turn so quickly into this? I held my hands up in front of me in a feeble attempt to push him away, knowing full well that restrained as I was I would just have to accept my fate. "Please... please don't..."
He gripped one of my wrists and I screwed my eyes shut tight, waiting to feel the white hot pain of the blade, but all I felt was the tie loosening around my wrists as he cut it away.
"I think it's quite obvious by now that I don't want you harmed isn't it?"
His voice was the softest I'd ever heard it and my eyes flicked open to see him leaning over me on the bed. He allowed me a small smile but it didn't reach his eyes, there was sadness there, a resigned kind of look. Like he'd accepted the destiny his treacherous life afforded him.
I knew then what was coming. He'd have to slip away, he'd already lingered far too long and with each passing second the chances of him escaping dwindled. My heart twisted with an unexpected ache.
"What now? I don't... I don't know what to do... how to feel. Where do we go from here? It's... it's crazy... it's fucked up!" My voice sounded desperate. A sob burst from me suddenly and I swallowed it down, looking up at Van.
He'd already started backing away, that regret still lingering in his eyes. "Goodbye Lyla... and please... please don't come after me again. I don't know how much longer I can keep you safe."
And then he was gone, slipping through the door like a shadow, the only trace of him left the taste of him still on my lips.

temporarily lifting the self-imposed embargo on fic because chief pilot fairbairn keeps running around my head for some reason and won’t leave
London Heathrow Airport, November 2002
Years have passed since Colin last set foot in Heathrow, and it shows when he steps off the jetbridge of the flight that’s acquiesced to carrying Air Caledonian’s Chief Pilot for the short jump south. He has the feeling that the passengers around him are as forgiving as they are because he’s in uniform—a symbol of authority that hasn’t changed much from the days when liner more often referred to a bulking machine cutting swiftly through waves upon a sea rather than air fronts in the sky.
There still aren’t as many passengers streaming around Colin as there used to be, even a year on—but it’s more than at the beginning of this new era, and Colin takes that as a sign of things bouncing back. Corporate, at least, is optimistic—if their decision to accept new hires and strike out into growth says anything. In fact, that’s indirectly the reason Colin’s here today, navigating through the Heathrow complex until he reaches what he’s looking for.
Air England’s crew lounge is as formidable as its reputation and, in Colin’s humble opinion, impersonally clean because of it—little Air Cal’s spot up in Glasgow can’t compete with the design, but at least it feels more homey than sanitized. He steps up to the front desk and quietly informs the employee working it of his intentions; she gets up to show him to his destination. Passing through, they occasionally run into Air England crews leaving or entering their numerous briefing rooms—the gold bars on Colin’s sleeves and the slightly-rumpled state of his jacket cause more than one double-take from the other airline’s pilots, with their impeccably pressed silver-trimmed uniforms.
Finally, he’s shown into the main pilots’ lounge and the employee surreptitiously points out a man with four bars on his sleeves whose shoes are unweathered from doing walk-arounds in distant airports. Colin thanks her and strides across the lounge to meet him.
He looks up from his paper at the sound of Colin’s polite greeting, recognizes him, and smiles courteously—Colin's not on personal terms with Air England's Heathrow chief exactly, but Colin's predecessor had been an old friend of this man, and recommended that he turn to him if he had any questions about the whole Chief Pilot lark. Colin and Alex had run into each other on other occasions, too, but Colin can't deny that an undercurrent of tension runs beneath this specific meeting: he's never had to approach him on an issue like this before.
"Colin, hello," Alex greets pleasantly, rising from his chair and sticking out a hand to shake. "Pleased to see you again. I trust the flight down here was comfortable?"
Colin nods. "The flight went well, Alex. Thank you for arranging it for me."
Alex smiles again. "You're very welcome. I've got a satellite office just down the hall, would you mind if we talked there?" The question isn't a pleasantry; Colin knows that underneath runs the implication, We cannot speak of what you want to talk about in this place. And he understands, and acquiesces.
They leave the lounge and make their way to Alex's office. "I remember you mentioned your daughter had one last checkride last time we met," Alex says conversationally as he unlocks the door. "How'd that go?"
"Passed," Colin replies with a smile, his tone noticeably warmer; how can it not, when the talk turns to his girl? "She's still building hours instructing, like I did before Cal, but I have a feeling she'll be looking to the airlines any day now if things get better."
"Suppose she might consider crossing Hadrian's Wall?" Alex jokes, showing him into the office and turning on the kettle he keeps in the corner.
Colin takes the seat Alex offers him and chuckles. "I don't know what's on her mind."
"Yes, yes," Alex concedes, "better to let her make her mind up on it first. You must be proud she's following you; none of mine did." He chuckles ruefully before sitting across from Colin. "But anyways. You wanted to speak to me about advice concerning a potential hire?"
Colin shakes himself out of it; if someone gets him talking about his Linda, he can't really stop, and he did come all the way down to Heathrow for a specific reason. "Yes. We've done an initial interview and a simulator evaluation for this one pilot already. Great evaluation, far more hours in command than our usual candidates, good CRM, but some things he said in the panel were...we didn't offer the job yet, we needed more information." Alex raises his eyebrows, and Colin clarifies, "He used to be one of yours."
"Ah." Alex's congenial demeanor seems to have vanished; the man now looks a little wary, and gazes askance in silence. Colin doesn't continue, reckoning that the other Chief Pilot needs time to think. Out of sight of Alex, behind the desk, Colin twists his wedding band to keep himself from nervously scratching the edge of his mustache.
"You see, Colin," Alex says slowly after a few seconds, "there's two in particular I'm thinking of, and where we go from here depends on which one came to you."
By now, this case is such a notable one that Colin can't help it; the pilot's name is committed to memory. "His name is Hercules Shipwright."
In front of him, Alex visibly relaxes. "I see. What was the area of concern during the panel interview?"
"He mentioned being released from his position here. We wanted to know whether that was an honest assessment of what occurred."
"Yes."
Colin notices that Alex doesn't elaborate, and presses, "Are you at liberty to discuss the specifics?"
"Not all of them," Alex says, smiling tightly. "But what I can tell you is that he was not terminated per se. It was a recommendation that he took."
"And what can you tell me about the circumstances leading up to...this recommendation?"
"Again," Alex replies, still wearing the tight little smile, "I'm not at liberty to discuss all the specifics."
Colin relents. "I see."
Alex regards him in silence; Colin doesn't think it's a dismissal, and his assessment is proven correct when Alex says, quieter, "Off the record...he may have involved himself in informant work."
In this moment, Colin is deeply grateful he had never considered becoming an Air England pilot: Air Caledonian is small, and friendly, and nothing like Air England, with informants and recommendations and secrecy and...whatever the hell goes on here.
Their uniforms may be impeccable, their reputation glossy and smooth, and their image one of prestige: but Colin is glad that he has Air Caledonian, with its earnest young pilots and crews, with its heart and its smallness and the fact that a pilot from this grand place was released, and decided to find a place at his harbor.
In this moment, Colin knows what he will say, when he gets to meet Hercules Shipwright face-to-face in his homey office on the outskirts of Glasgow Airport; he knows what he will ask, and how the man will leave headquarters when they are finished.
"I see," Colin says to Alex now, and makes to rise. "I must be going now. Thank you for answering my question, and for your hospitality."
Alex startles a little in his seat at the certainty that must have colored Colin's tone. "Oh. Well. You're very welcome, Colin."
Alex walks him back out, past the front desk to the terminals beyond, and arranges for him to take an Air England flight back up to Glasgow; as they stand before the jet bridge, the crew already preparing the aircraft for flight, Alex turns back to Colin.
"You mentioned your daughter might be looking out for the airlines soon," he says, conversationally. "Let me know if she's open to a chat with me."
And that's a possibility: with Linda's skill, with his connections, there's a chance Air England might be a fit for her. He might not have wanted to be caught dead in those silver-trimmed uniforms, but she might...but something, deep inside, tells Colin that Hercules Shipwright left this place behind for a very good reason.
Maybe he'll get it, when he meets him.
"I can't read her mind," Colin replies simply, and Alex chuckles, bids him farewell, and takes his leave.

hi!! im on the edge of a milestone so i just wanted to make an announcement regarding blank blogs and the likes.
while i dont actively go through each follower's blog to make sure they're not a blank blog, i do occaionsally scroll through my list of followers. if you have a default pfp, that's one sure way to have me check your blog. alternatively, a random username is also something that catches my eye (ie. keysmashes, or smth that seems ... very random). if you're a blank blog, i'm rather likely to soft block (ie. block and then unblock) you.
furthermore, if i end up checking your blog and i see that you havent reblogged anything in the last year or two, i will most likely softblock. if i havent seen you in my notifs recently, i also might softblock, though this is less likely because i dont always check who int'd w my stuff.
if you were following my main while i was writing there, you might know that one of my biggest problems was that the number of followers i had did not match up with the number of notes and interactions at all. of course, there's no reassurance that the notes i get are from the people following me, but when a piece of writing only gets.. say, 30 odd notes, but my folloeing count is much much higher than that, it does leave me wondering why no ones int'ing. yes, some accs may just be imactive bc ive been on here for the last 3-4 years, but still, the numbers didnt.. quite make sense.
anyways yes just a heads up that i will be checking recent followers a little more than before.
and please reblog and leave comments. not only is that a way to prevent you from getting softblocked, its also a way to let me know my work is appreciated! likes are nice, but they alone (and even empty reblogs) sometimes leave me wondering if the piece was actually read at all.
anyways, that's all (for now HAHA) if you read all this,i really appreciate it! i hope everyone has a good day <3<3
ps. sorry about any typos i really did just wake up within the last 15mins

RNM Season 4 Episode 9
I haven't even bothered to read the complaints about the setup for Roswell New Mexico s04e09 because I already know them all from similar plots in other shows. But as you all know, Salmon is The Defender of the Tropes.  So, no, I don't care if people are whining that it's “cheesy” or “dumb” or “overused” - I effin love dreamscape/mindscape scenarios in shows where the cast get to dress up as alternate variations of themselves and the character(/s) have to navigate some world created by someone's dreams/mind.  So, Liz’s Wild West mindscape where she's fighting her dark self?  Yes, yes, yes to infinity.  I love it, I am here for it - it was awesome.
Family and Found family feels were particularly strong this episode. Both outside and inside the mindscape. I am always happy to see Arturo, who remains the absolute best person in all of existence. Dreamscape Rosa being the snarky sidekick to Dreamscape Liz was great. Non-Dreamscape Rosa being equally as awesome, talking both Heath and Michael down from the ledge. Michael having Kyle on speed dial - help me Kyle you are my only hope - was fantastic. Plus, we had some of the best Evans Twins moments we've had kind of all season.
We even have Heath returning to help save Liz, confessing to being worried sick to leave Dallas, and how now that Dallas is missing he’s a mess and needs to be there to help save him? The feels! Honestly, I started season 3 as very Anti-Heath. I literally went around calling him Knock-Off Kyle for half the season. But Heath, like my darling Cam, managed to escape the horror that is being assigned as a Love Foil and came out the other side a great character.  I am so happy to see him back.
What did take me by surprise, however, was the sheer level of Science Bros feels I came away with from the episode. Let us take a moment to remember this is Liz’s mindscape, and everything that is happening reflects on her feelings towards the members of her circle of family and found family.  And Michael is positioned front and center in it. Michael wins a poker game against Clyde for her. Michael comes to her with the clue she needs to find Dark Liz and Max. Michael gives her a whole speech that he is there for her if she needs help - making her remember she can rely on those around her. Michael is who guns down the first Clyde. I mean… damn.
I know I always go off about the friendship Liz and Michael have built being essentially the best friendship on the show, about the parallels in their story and how alike they are to one another.  But I honestly was not expecting a major Echo storyline to come with such a huge side of “Liz thinks the world of her alien science bro.” But it did, and I kinda want to cry over it - in a good way.
Meanwhile, Kyle, while not even in the episode, continues to prove to have the only brain cell in the entire cast. As, apparently, he keeps telling the group over and over again that Michael is their best hope for a solution. Kyle's absolute faith in Michael's genius to help save the day is such a huge thing - it really shows how far Michael and Kyle have also come.  I'm honestly looking very much forward to them teaming up to save Alex next episode.
My main complaint centers around the very confusing line from Max, “I need a real scientist, no offense.”
Um… full offense? Like, if Max had said he needed a real doctor, I'd understand. Michael is not a doctor - which is part of what has him spiraling and uncertain all episode. It also doesn't do anything for his state of mind when Heath flat refuses his assistance - something neither Liz or Kyle would ever have done.
Heath’s refusal probably stemmed at least partly from him seeming to semi-blame Isobel and Michael for Dallas being missing.  He also isn't as familiar with how much Liz and Kyle have relied on Michael's aid for three straight seasons.  So, Heath’s refusal makes sense.
But Max’s lack of trust in Michael?  Saying he isn't a “real scientist”?  What literally was that?
It's particularly jarring following an episode with one of the best Max/Michael scenes in all four seasons, and when combined with everyone else basically saying to Michael over and over, “But Kyle says you're the one we need.”  And to top it all off, it is Michael who once again comes up with exactly the solution needed.
So… um… Max, apparently both the love of your life and your ex-rival/future brother-in-law (who once disliked Michael a lot) have 100% faith in Michael's abilities as a scientist and see him as the person to turn to for solutions to alien problems. So, what exactly is the excuse here for you once again dismissing the abilities of the guy who's supposed to be like a brother to you? I thought we were finally past this!
While I absolutely adored Max holding Michael and swearing to be there for him last episode, I really am gonna need a little more than that. I need Max to show some honest respect for Michael’s abilities.  The kind young Max had no problem giving to Michael. I want to have all the Max and Michael alien siblings feels, but Max’s continued lack of faith in Michael is honestly very frustrating.
I am looking forward to some Dark Liz. Here's hoping it lasts longer than the 5 minutes we got Dark Max.

Win or His Loss?
Inside the controversies surrounding Drake and 21 Savage’s latest album, “Her Loss”
By Karissa Cruz
Tumblr media

Amidst the release of Drake and 21 Savage’s new album, several controversies have arisen between Drake, Vogue Magazine and other artists. Several artists are said to have been disrespected and thrown shade at throughout the chart-topping album, “Her Loss”. Artists like Megan Thee Stallion have fallen victim to the controversies surrounding the Torontonian artist's brand-new release. In addition to Drake receiving backlash for his shots at other artists, Vogue Magazine also filed a lawsuit against him and 21 Savage for their fake Vogue promotion poster. Despite the growing arguments with regards to the integrity of the album occurring on social media platforms, the album’s rapid success has evidently continued to overpower.
November 4, 2022, marked the release of Drake and 21 Savage’s brand new collaboration, “Her Loss”. Streaming on all listening platforms, the love rap album features several themes - women, partying, misogyny, and money. Merely minutes following the release, multiple songs from the album blew up on TikTok, Twitter and Instagram. Over 70k creators from all around the world have recorded themselves lip-synching to songs like “Rich Flex”, comedically mimicking how they think Drake and 21 Savage must’ve looked whilst recording in the studio. However, the success of the album is not solely due to the catchiness of certain songs, in fact, its success is primarily the result of the gossip associated with its lyrics and covert references.
Within minutes of the release of “Her Loss”, Drake and 21 Savage set gossip sites and pop culture news aflame due to references ranging from Serena William’s husband, Alexis Ohanian, to old quarrels within the rap industry, to an insult towards Megan Thee Stallion’s foot injury caused by Tory Lanez.
Back in 2015 before Ohanian and Williams were together, Drake and Williams were exclusively dating. They broke up in 2015, and she later started seeing Ohanian in May of that same year. When she married Ohanian in 2017, Drake began to throw bitter shots at the couple. In “Her Loss”, specifically “Middle of the Ocean” at 3:35, Drake calls out the Reddit founder in the lyrics; "Sidebar, Serena, your husband a groupie; He claim we don't got a problem but; No, boo, it is like you comin' for sushi". Ohanian responds to the subtle diss in his tweet, saying, "The reason I stay winning is because I'm relentless about being the absolute best at whatever I do - including being the best groupie for my wife & daughter." This is not the first time that Drake has made subtly bitter comments towards Williams in his songs. He previously insulted the Olympian’s tennis career, claiming that he could beat her in a match in his 2013 track, “Worst Behavior”.
Despite the disrespectful nature of the rapper’s lyrics, the jab at Ohanian and Williams’ relationship was not the main issue that occupies pop culture websites and gossip columns nowadays. Rather, Drake’s controversial covert remark towards Megan Thee Stallion, whose foot was allegedly shot by Tory Lanez back in 2020, has taken the spotlight. The rapper, Tory Lanez, is currently facing “one count of assault with a semiautomatic firearm and one count of carrying a loaded, concealed firearm in a vehicle”, according to a statement made by the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office. According to police reports, Tory was having an argument with a woman - identified as “Megan P” in a criminal complaint - in a SUV on July 12. As the woman exited the car, she was shot multiple times in the foot. Megan Thee Stallion, formally known as Megan Jovon Ruth Pete talked about the car incident during an Instagram Live on her verified account. She later posted a photo of her wound, which was deleted slightly after. In October 2020, legal authorities charged the rapper with felony assault, but he pleaded not guilty the following month. He is currently placed under house arrest as he waits for his trial after allegedly shooting Megan and assaulting the singer August Alsina in August 2022. If convicted, Lanez faces a maximum sentence of roughly 23 years. Amidst the allegations made against Tory Lanez and Megan’s public complaints, Drake threw his own shot at Megan through his lyrics in his new album, specifically in his song “Circo Loco”; “This b---h lie 'bout getting shots, but she still a stallion.” The singer responded to the underhanded insult on Twitter. She called Drake “lame”, and claimed that such conspiracy theories were weak and that they lacked proper facts or receipts. Artists like Sweetest Pie and other listeners shared their distaste for Drake’s biased lyrics against Megan.
Like previous tracks, Drake’s songs have a history of calling out people who he feels have wronged him through his lyrics. Evidently, the success of his collaborative album with 21 Savage is not solely due to its acquired traction and fame on social media platforms like TikTok, but a large part of it is the controversies surrounding the lyrical references themselves. His album is no doubt a fan favourite, but the issues that it set aflame have definitely caused a divide amongst his supporters and supporters of those he covertly mentioned in his music.

First and Second Impressions of Tunic
You know, I probably should have posted something after my first play session, but I like to be certain I’m hooked before I post impressions, you know? (talking like this is just a regular thing that I do, I guess) Anyway, been playing Tunic, it’s pretty amazing, and even though I haven’t experienced any huge story moments yet, I can already tell there’s something going on beneath the surface. I’ve played up to the West Garden area, so a few early-game spoilers under the cut!
- The Legend of Zelda influence is obvious enough, but there’s a bit of a Dark Souls influence in the way the healing mechanics work (using bonfires/shrines and a flask with multiple charges) as well as the early game difficulty, the stamina management and shield stability mechanics, and most importantly, the very minimalist approach to storytelling and even information about game mechanics. It doesn’t feel like cheap difficulty though, I feel that this is perhaps leading to a theme of discovery.
- The most unique and interesting thing about Tunic so far is the existence of the information booklet pages that you can find in the world. You can literally find pieces of a manual for Tunic in the game Tunic, in the style of one of the old paper booklet manuals you might have gotten with a copy of A Link to the Past back in the day. This is your main source of information for maps, game mechanics, and sometimes puzzle solutions. This leads into...
- Most of the game’s text is utterly incomprehensible. Almost every text box in the game is in some kind of hieroglyph language that neither you nor apparently your character can read. This extends to the manual as well - certain important words are in English, but the vast majority is in gibberish. Apparently this in-game language is a phonetic cipher that’s perfectly understandable if you use a guide, but I’ve also seen hints that deciphering the manual might lead to some major spoilers, so I won’t bother for now. The game appears to be using a language barrier to develop a theme of being lost in a vast and confusing world with limited and often hard-to-understand information about what you can do and where to go. I didn’t realize at first that you can make offerings at the shrines to increase your stats, for example.
This all might sound like a source of cheap difficulty, but the game and especially the manual are designed to convey a lot of information to you visually, and it’s pretty much always possible to figure things out if you pay attention and think about things.
- Speaking of the manual, in addition to the regular text and art, there are notes written in it in what appears to be ballpoint pen. These notes often give you hints to puzzle solutions and make navigation easier. More interestingly, it hints that your character is not the first protagonist that’s gone on an adventure to this land.
- I’ve found at least two areas in the game that are designated as a “Hero’s grave”, with memorial statues of a fox with a tunic and sword that look remarkably similar to your player character. It was a little eerie to come across a grave in the game seemingly belonging to the character I was playing, much less twice. The statues looked miserable, too, suggesting that the hero(s?) had met a tragic end. Granted, the player character’s design is simple enough that the resemblance might be coincidental, but I don’t think it is. Between this and the notes in the manual, I wonder if we’re supposed to be in some sort of time loop?
- There are no other living, sentient beings in the game. There are two other fox characters - a tall and thin robed fox of ambiguous gender who appears to be some kind of deity given they’re depicted at all the healing shrines, and a gigantic fox skeleton with glowing eyes that’s found in a windmill. Every other entity in the game is hostile, and I have yet to find any other foxes. The most common enemy type are called “Rudelings”, which are stated in the manual to be soulless beings that only follow orders. There are no NPCs you can just talk to, at least none yet, and it gives the game a very lonely feeling.
- speaking of the gigantic glowy-eyed fox skeleton, that’s the game’s merchant! They sell you bombs and healing items! Imagine being me, walking into a completely dark room in the back of a windmill, and having a fucking heart attack when that thing appeared out of nowhere, only for it to offer me helpful items. I don’t know why this game’s item shop is being run by a 50-foot-tall fox lich, but somehow I’m glad that it is.
- speaking of the other fox in the game, the deity-like figure depicted in the healing shrines is seemingly this game’s version of Princess Zelda. Just beyond the first healing shrine you find is a large, ornate door made of gold. You go through to a sort of limbo space and find that fox there, trapped in a crystal of multicolored light. They see you and immediately pound on their crystal prison in a futile effort to escape, seemingly trying to reach out to your character at any cost, before the scene gets blotted out by light and your character wakes up back at the healing shrine. You can go to the door again, but it says “Sealed Forever.” and won’t open. This is something you can experience in the first ten minutes. That’s quite an effective hook!
- Just a little detail, but your first weapon in the game is a stick, not a sword. You get it in a cave in a way that feels deliberately reminiscent of getting the sword from the old man in the original Legend of Zelda.  You know; “it’s dangerous to go alone, take this!” But instead of getting it from an old man trying to help you on your journey, you pick it up in an abandoned chest, and instead of a sword, it’s a stick. The stick sucks as a weapon, so you start off feeling helpless and underprepared in this big, expansive world. It makes finding the sword a pretty sweet moment!
Edit: I had to double check something regarding the deity-fox because I realized I didn’t quite remember how the first meeting went, but forgot to make changes to that part of the post.
