Gabriel sits on the rooftop of their apartment, their legs dangling carelessly from the ledge. They take in the crispness of the air, enjoying the way it caresses their skin. It’s a beautiful night, breezy but not cold. Too bad it reminds them badly of another night a year ago, one they would rather forget.

It was going as well as expected, which is to say not well at all.

“You don’t mean that.”

“I do. I can’t do this anymore, Trystan.”

“I know things have been… difficult, but…”

Gabriel snorted. “Difficult. That’s one word for it.”

“But we can make it work. I can…”

“We can’t make it work. We’ve tried. How many times have we seen each other these past six months, Trystan? The number should be easy enough to remember, considering it’s a big fat zero.”

“That’s only because this is my first year on the throne. Once things settle a bit…”

“Settle? You’re a king. You’re never going to have fewer responsibilities than you do now.”

Trystan’s face was a mask of anguish. “Gabriel, please don’t do this. I love you.”

Even as the words cut deep into their heart, Gabriel almost rolled their eyes. Trust Trystan to pick this moment to say those words for the first time.

He took a deep breath. “I think I believe you. I almost wish I didn’t. Maybe this would be easier.”

It wouldn’t, of course. Leaving Trystan could never be easy. It felt more along the lines of undergoing open heart surgery without anesthesia.

“Gabriel, I…” Frustration settled on Trystan’s features at the knock on the door. “Not now!”

“I’m sorry, Your Majesty,” a flustered voice said from the other side. “But this is an emergency.”

Gabriel had no trouble recognizing the voice as that of Luka, Trystan’s new personal assistant. God knew they had spent more time talking to him than to their own partner in the last six months. Notifications of cancelled flights. State emergencies. Trystan didn’t have time for anything but Drakovia anymore. So it wasn’t a surprise when he ran a hand over his face and sighed.

“I’ll be there in a moment,” he said. Then he turned pleading eyes on them. “Gabriel, just… let me get this out of the way and we can talk more. Maybe over a late dinner tonight?” He tried to smile. “I promise escargot isn’t on the menu.”

Gabriel said nothing. This last instance of Trystan choosing Drakovia over them did nothing but cement their certainty. So once Trystan walked out, they went back to their room, left a note for him on their nightstand, and called a cab.

They were going back home.

It’s almost a year to the day since they walked out of the palace and Trystan’s life. It still hurts. They’re all but resigned to the fact that it always will.

Trystan has respected the request in their note not to contact them again. But perversely, part of Gabriel is upset about that. They want it to be as hard for Trystan to resign himself to their separation as it has been for them.

“I had a feeling I’d find you here.”

Gabriel spins around so fast, they almost plummet from the rooftop to their death.

“Trystan?”

“The one and only.” He attempts a grin, but it’s so forced it almost looks painful. “I missed you.”

Unbelievable. “You show up out of the blue, in my own damn home I might add, and all you have to say is ‘I miss you’?”

“It’s all I’ve thought for the past year. So while it’s not all I have to say, it’s certainly a big part of what I have to say.”

Oh no. Absolutely not. Gabriel is not getting sucked into this emotional vortex again.

“What are you doing here, Trystan?”

“I needed to talk to you.”

“Does modern technology no longer exist in Drakovia?”

Oddly, the sarcasm seems to put Trystan more at ease. “It depends on your definition of modern. We installed landlines last week. Truly innovative stuff.”

“And you couldn’t use one of those shiny new landlines to, I don’t know, call?”

There’s not a trace of humor left on Trystan’s expression. “I had to see you.”

“And say what?”

“Haven’t you been checking the news lately?”

“Yes. We’re in the middle of a recession. Now what are you doing here?”

“Would you come with me? I promise I’ll tell you everything, but…”

“I’m not going anywhere with you until you tell me what you’re doing here.”

“I abdicated.”

It’s like a bomb has exploded. Gabriel is stunned speechless. For a moment, they’re not sure they heard correctly.

“What did you say?”

“I abdicated. Gabriel, please. I’ll tell you everything and answer any questions you might have. But come with me.”

They stand slowly. “Okay. But I have a lot of questions, so you had better be ready to answer them all.”

Several minutes later, Gabriel unconsciously lays a hand on Trystan’s arm.

“Are we going where I think we’re going?”

The answering smile is a little shaky. Almost like Trystan is… nervous.

“I once took you to the last place I visited before I left Drakovia. I thought we could do this in the first place you visited when you came back to New York.”

“How do you…”

“I know you,” he says simply.

Gabriel swallows. It’s an exquisite kind of ache, being seen so clearly. In this particular case, it’s dangerous, too. The man in the driver seat has already broken their heart once. And he did it gradually, piece by piece, so that when they tried to put it back together, some pieces were irrevocably lost. A jigsaw puzzle that will never be the same again. Never be whole again.

They can’t put themselves in that position again. No matter how much they love Trystan, how much they have accepted they will always love Trystan, they can’t let themselves become Eveline.

Once they get to the NYC Botanical Gardens, Gabriel looks at the woman opening the doors, then back at Trystan. They roll their eyes.

“How the hell did you manage to get us in so late?” They ask as they walk into the gardens, the mingling scents of flowers a soothing balm.

“My darling detective, even a former king has some influence.”

“Yeah, about that. You say you abdicated. As in gave up the throne?”

“Gabriel, I realize you are but a commoner…” He grins when they throw a wadded-up piece of paper at him. “But even you must know what abdication means.”

“I’m trying to have a conversation here, so dial down the jokes.” But they can’t resist the sly grin. “And you’re a commoner now too.”

“So I am. But as it happens, I couldn’t care less about having a kingdom. I only care about trying to fix the havoc I wreaked upon the single most important part of my life.”

“Trystan…”

He shakes his head. Then he pulls something out of his pocket. Gabriel gasps.

“Is that…?”

“Your note? Yes.” He strokes his thumb over it, automatically. As though it’s a habit so well ingrained, he doesn’t realize he’s doing it. “I’ve carried this note with me everywhere I went, every day for a year.”

They hesitantly hold out a hand. “May I?”

When Trystan hands it over, Gabriel’s fingers trace the creases of the paper. They’re deep, as though the paper has been folded and unfolded countless times throughout the past year. They unfold it once more.

For the record, I love you too. But love isn’t always enough, Trystan. I have to go. We both deserve better than this. Love, Gabriel P.S. Please don’t try to contact me.

“You’ve been carrying this?” They ask softly.

Trystan nods. “At first, it was a reminder to respect your wishes. All I wanted was to call you, to hear your voice, so I had to keep reminding myself you didn’t want that. Then… I guess it became a way to stay close to you.” He straightens, looks Gabriel in the eye. “Last week, a maid took my clothes to be laundered before I had a chance to search through my pockets. I thought I lost it, your note. I panicked.”

“Oh, Trystan.”

“That’s when it hit me.” He takes a hesitant step towards them, then another. He keeps walking until he and Gabriel are mere inches apart. “You mean more to me than Drakovia. How could I possibly be a good leader when I kept resenting my people for keeping me away from you?”

“So you walked away.”

“Yes. And as soon as I had, I jumped on Mags’ plane to get here and beg for another chance.”

Are they dreaming? Gabriel isn’t sure. If they are, they never want to wake up.

Trystan takes their hands. “I love you. I will always love you. Please tell me it isn’t too late for us.”

Blinking back tears, Gabriel shakes their head. “Bold of you to bring me here, though.”

“Why’s that?”

“You know you all but gave me home advantage, right?”

Trystan laughs, running his fingers down their cheek. “You didn’t need a place to have the upper hand. You just had to be you.”

They lean in. If Gabriel had let themselves imagine what a reunion kiss with Trystan would be like, they probably would have thought of something more intense. But this. This soft, tender kiss, a slow reacquaintance where each revels in being reunited… It’s hard to believe anything else could be better.

Because this is Trystan. It’s Gabriel.

It’s everything.

when the stunningly talented and generous @lilyoffandoms offered to gift me some art to celebrate my beating cancer, (first, I just sat there like 🥺 because how are you so sweet??), but second, I jumped at the chance to see Gabriel in a flower crown!

Marigold: joy, warmth, energy, prosperity Cosmos: harmony, peace, determination, resilience

Gabriel's story is one of pain and healing, so seeing him at peace means so freaking much to me. His contentment is my contentment, his joy is my joy.

Coincidentally, we also share a birth month! Marigolds and Cosmos are the October birth flowers, and they have a multitude of meanings that just felt so fitting for this kind of celebration 🌸

This month's Writer of the Month was selected a little differently than normal. We announced that we would be selecting the WOTM from the participants in last month's Writer Appreciation Event. But the eleven writers involved all agreed the honor belonged to Lily. Lily has been a staple in the Choices community for so long, and they continuously go out of their way to support creators and spread positivity while continuing to inspire and create themselves. We couldn't think of anyone better suited for the honor, so please join us in congratulating Lily... September's Writer of the Month!

1- When did you start playing Choices? What was the first book you played?

Best guess would be back in January of 2018. It was a joke at first since a friend saw one of their god-awful ads and said we should both try it. Next thing you know, we were both arguing over which books were better and regretting our decision to start. Though their opinions on what constitutes good books are almost as bad as the Choices ad that got us to jokingly play (and I say this most lovingly because they are awesome and I love them). I started with Most Wanted, and my friend started with The Freshman.

2- When and why did you join Choices fandom?

Oh gods! I joined back in March 2019. I know I’m a Tumblr baby by most everyone’s standards, but that feels like a really long time. I joined when Open Heart book one was released. I had lurked, reading fanfics, for a few months before biting the bullet and creating a blog and actually posting. Only joined because I was taking my editor’s advice and writing something entirely outside my norm to break a particularly bad case of writer’s block. Thought I might as well share those silly things if I was taking the time to write them. Maybe someone would enjoy them. Never did plan on sticking around, but found so many lovely people that I’ve come to call friends.

3- How did you pick your blog name?

It was lilyofchoices. My name + Choices because I am super creative like that with those sorts of naming things 😅 I changed it to lilyoffandoms when I left the Choices fandom for a bit. I’ve thought about changing it more times than I can count but I can’t bring myself to actually follow through on it. How do y’all’s change your blog name with each new book release? You are a crazy different breed of tumblr and you fascinate me.

4- Pull up the first post in your archive, and tell us about it!

I deleted the first one years ago. It was my first drabble. Currently, as it stands, the first thing in my archive is this post about Desire and Decorum, and it still makes me giggle.

5- How long have you been writing fanfiction?

I’ve only been writing fanfic since I joined Tumblr. I never really tried writing fanfic before that. Some nonfiction personal things before that but never anything like this world. It's been an adventure, to say the least haha

6- What is your favorite Choices book, and what is your favorite Choices book to write about?

My favorite book is probably Blades of Light and Shadow, book one, but there are plenty that are really close behind. This is also the book I’d say I enjoy writing for the most because it is my favorite book, contains my favorite LI, and has one of my favorite OCs (Maiele) in it.

Though recently, I’ve been writing more for Crimes of Passion because it's more of a challenge for me. It's a different vibe between the MC and the LI and it's one I don’t often explore so I’m here for that right now. But I have a sneaky suspicion once Blades 2 drops I’ll be back on my bullshit with that again.

7- Share the first fanfic you wrote with us. Do you still like it, or would you change it if you were writing it today?

I don’t think it exists on this site anymore. Maybe in someone’s reblog? I still have it in my files. It was an Ethan x MC drabble featuring my MC, Merida. I still like it. I’d not change it cuz I’m a firm believer in writing it and don’t look back haha.

This is it:

He swallowed the lump forming in his throat, trying to hold back the tears that were threatening to form in his eyes. There it was. He had told her. Dr. Banerji was dying and Ethan was at a loss as to what was ailing his mentor and friend. Ethan stared at the young woman in front of him and then to the floor. He cleared his throat and made a small motion to turn back into Naveen’s room but froze instantly the moment he noticed her take a step towards him.

She threw her arms around him and hugged him, wishing to take away all of his pain, all of his loneliness. Silently willing him to understand that she cared for him. Cared deeply for him and much more than she should. “Ethan. I’m so sorry,” she whispered, one hand stroked through his hair while the other grasped his neck and slowly bent his head toward her shoulders as she raised herself to her tiptoes to meet him halfway.

He tensed upon feeling her arms around him. Arms, he thought to himself, that he had imagined holding him for a number of weeks now. Ever since that night spent sitting up with her watching little baby Ethan. “Merida,” he sighed as he gradually relaxed into the embrace.

She didn’t let up on the hug, squeezing him to her just a bit more tightly. God, she had wanted to comfort him when Dolores died but she didn’t know how he would respond. Now, he was facing the possibility of another friend dying and she couldn’t help herself.

He responded to the increased pressure of her hug and tightened his own hold upon her. Finding himself tracing circles up her spine and imagining what it would feel like to move his hands to tease along the skin of her back where her pants met her shirt.

Her breath caught when she felt his hands move lower. No longer making gentle movements along her spine but increasing their pressure upon her body, nearly massaging their way lower. She brought one of her own hands around to his chest, lightly bunching his white coat in her fist to try and pull him closer to her.

A loud crash echoed down the hall. “Shit!” a construction worker cursed. The two doctors jumped back from each other both staring into each other’s eyes seeming to question if they had both felt the same in the other’s arms. She blushed slightly. “I should see to my other patients. Dr. Banerji’s condition stays between us. Understand, Rookie?” he stated, his eyes narrowing. She nodded and he turned and marched down the hall.

8- What is your favorite fic that you’ve written?

I love asking this question of others but don’t like it asked of me. I’m so bad at self-rep and advertising my wares 😂 But if I had to pick one, I’d say this one. It was so far outside my comfort zone when it came to writing that I almost abandoned it two paragraphs in. But I’m a stubborn person, and I refused to let it beat me. Plus, I had been wanting to write a noir fic for this book since it was released. Furthermore, I adore Hayden’s work too much not to gift a little something back for all the art he shares with us, so I knew I just had to make it work.

9- Do you have a fic that you didn’t expect to be well received, but it was? What about one you expected to be but found could use a little more love?

I didn’t expect last year’s Luck of the Draw fic to garner much love. Attention? Maybe. But not love and definitely not the response I got. I really enjoyed writing that one.

10- If you could write only angst, fluff, or smut for the rest of your writing life, which would it be and why?

Fluff. I’m a sucker for happy-ever-afters and an endless hopeless romantic. Give me the fluff. All the fluff.

I pull a lot of what I toss into my silly drabbles from real life. Always been a believer in writing, most often what you know, and sprinkle that all with a dash of the stuff you don’t as a treat. And my life is pretty fluffy thanks to my incredible partner.

However, I do so adore angst I’m just not able to write it often because it hurts more to write. But I’ll always always read it. That pain is *chef’s kisses*

11- Do you ever recognize yourself in any of your MCs or in your writing?

Maiele, my Blades MC, is most definitely me coded. His whole personality, his choice of partner when it comes to personality, his constant flirting with said partner, his sense of humor, his lack of a filter most times, it’s all pretty much me. Gabriel, my CoP MC, is me when it comes to romantic gestures and Valentine’s Day. I may be a romantic, but I get weird when it’s aimed at me 😂

12- What element of writing do you struggle with most?

Editing. I refuse to do it. I hate it with the burning light of a thousand suns. Those of you that manage to edit your fics have all my admiration. I honestly don’t know how y’all do it. Doesn’t it just bore you to no end?

13- Do you have any neglected work you really want to finish?

I have more drafts than I care to admit. I would like to complete a series I started long ago for Ethan x Merida, but I don’t know if I’ll ever do that. I’d settle for finishing one of my drafts 😅

14- If someone you know in real life (who isn’t involved in fandoms) asked to read your work, would you let them? If yes, what would you recommend they read first?

Nope, haha, I’d not be able to do that. If I were that brave, I’d recommend this one maybe. I do so love Flynn. Or this one, mostly because I do so love the idea of Gabriel just pouting on the couch.

15 - Are there any writers (published authors and/or fanfic writers) who influenced your writing?

Not really. I mean all of em probably. I read a lot of books in a lot of genres. Mostly I use my drabbles as morning warm ups for my day job.

There are definitely fanfic writers I admire around here that encourage me to share my silly things everyday. Especially all those queer writers out there that have a rather thankless existence sometimes around here but keep sharing their stories! They are all my heroes!!

16- Which one of your stories would you most like to see as a movie/series?

Any and all of my Maiele and Tyril stories. I just love them sooooo much!!

17- Do you write original fiction?

Yes, but until recently, I wrote mostly nonfiction.

I do have a fic I began a few years back when I was still teaching. I had a student who hated their writing class, so I promised to write a short story alongside them and read it to the class like all the students had to if they gave it an honest go.

They did and so I did too, and I was asked the following year to do it again by more students and so I continued the same story. I’ve since continued that same fic, and maybe someday I’ll actually go looking to publish it.

18 - What other hobbies do you have?

I love the outdoors. Hiking, spelunking, kayaking, gardening, camping, anything and everything outdoors. My other favorite hobby, which I've done for years and years, is fencing. I still am part of a club and teach a few levels.

19 - What’s your favorite emoji?

😅 because it’s legit my state of existence at this point in life.

20: BONUS - tell us anything you’d like (if you want to).

What is Enid’s favorite thing to steal from Joaquin’s closet and what is his fav from her’s?

we love giving couples an inexplicably queer vibe by having them play w androgynous looks to swap

both of them @ each other: it looks better on me😗💅🏼

joaquin's favorite: a knitted wool sweater (im indecisive, so i don't have an example at the ready- but enid's color palette leans more towards neutral colors w a few stand out pieces that are more striking. the reason: it's that damn soft. has been known to spend a good chunk of time just running his hands over the sleeves in awe.

another favorite of his also falls into the 'it's so dang so soft' category": enid's scarves -> he esp likes the lingering notes of her perfume that clings to the fabric. joaquin (wearing enid's scarf): *inhales deeply*

bonus: i hc that enid is very sensitive to scents (most candles are a no-go bc she finds it too overpowering, air fresheners have to be mild). her lotions/creams are mostly non-scented; the exception- a perfume w/ notes of ginger and citrus -> the aroma is very nostalgic for her as it brings her back to childhood memories eating meals w her family (has filipino/thai background)

enid's favorite: everything lol. she takes on joaquin's offer of 'what's mine is yours' head-on and never looked back. joaquin gets to bask in the satisfaction of seeing enid wear his suits (blazers/shirts) to work and enid gets the satisfaction of looking fucking hot. also repurposes his work attire (dresses it down) to wear in more casual settings.

What constitutes as pajamas for them?

For Nora, it has to be something comfortable to sleep in and that's the only requirement. Trouble is, her outdoor work-clothes prioritize utility over comfort, so she finds herself stocking up on shirts and tracks (reluctantly ofc, she hasn't prioritized self care in a million years) and old button-downs or tank tops or simply just pajamas lmao. She'd either look like a grandmother who'd chuck a newspaper at you or a Victorian child walking down a long hallway with a gas lamp.

Trystan would more or so agree with the same consensus. He likes the nice practicality and has no shame in investing in good sleepware that doesn't have overly large frills or uncomfortable pockets to keep him up at night, along with the already-ransacking effects of insomnia. I'd like to think he opts for more warmer clothes - hoodies, sweatshirts, full-sleeved sweaters under stripey t-shirts - it is such a whiplash of a difference compared to what he wears during the day; but keeps the nice colours.

Nora is going for something like these, minus the shoes because wearing shoes at home is sacrilegious to her) and also most of what she wears can also be considered a 'work outfit' too? Honestly if Nora finds a piece of clothing she can wear at home, at work and run errands with, she is never going to part away with it at all. (Bonus points if it is monochrome so she doesn't have to think too hard to see if the colours go well together.)

Trystan would likely go with something like this:

I'd like to think he drew a lot of inspiration from your typical Boho-style/New York streetwear before he got tired of it, but he still carries this soft spot for clothes with nice, neat patterns. This is the stuff he'd wear on a weekend - on the brink between staying home and going out. He wants to be presentable if someone visits but at the same time, doesn't want to be dealing with swapping out clothes everytime he goes out. Otherwise he's sticking to his pajamas if he doesn't have plans and kind of becomes a chaotic indoor houseplant.

(I hc they're called up in the evening for an emergency case for Mafalda and Nora shows up in like a tracksuit and sweater as if she's been coaching a basketball team and Trystan had just finished saying his hellos in a party, decked out in a silk button-down shirt with waves embroidered on it, and they're both like "what.")

(Bonus: They end up confronting the perpetrator but the perp cannot take them seriously at all, because one looks like he walked straight out of a music festival after-party and one looks like a teacher who is never beating the 'all teachers sleep in the school' allegations)

(Another bonus: They end up kicking ass and taking names anyway, but the perp is still laughing at them even after getting caught)
