I'm going to need a full week to recover. So I had this gut feeling that she was their daughter. There was a setup, you have to pay it off to the people watching eventually. I was a bit afraid to say it, but I've suspected it for a little while now. And I am amazed. Gaal rescuing Salvor from the water was so beautiful it gave me goosebumps.

I am, however, incredibly pissed off. She remained in stasis for over a century. WHich means that, unlike he went into statis as well, Hugo is now dead. That is not ok. I was invested.

I'm extremely surprised by Day's choice regarding Dawn. I thought he would be merciless, but his decision denoted a growth I did not expect. Dusk was a little bitch about it. He doesn't know his place. He's not The Empire anymore, he's merely an advisor who should shut it when his opinion is not required. I was as outraged as Day by the bitchslap.

I was not outraged, however, I was positively flabbergasted by Demerzel's actions. She's losing it. She is going mad. She's going through Rampancy! But now that all Cleons have been adultered, who is she meant to be loyal to? Should she just… kill them all? Or should she consider them all to be Cleons, regardless of their potential differences? She's not dealing well with the news, that we can say.

I have a question. We discussed The 6th Day recently, and you mentioned that it's touched upon in Foundation. I understand that, if needed, a clone that's been decanted at a later stage can be infused with its predecessor's memories. That's all good. But mannerisms aren't genetically encoded, they're learned. So I don't understand why XIV couldn't copy them, when many of his predecessors were apparently adultered, and therefore not as identical as they all initially thought they were. AS I understood it, any new clone is created from the genetic materials of Cleon the First. At some point, it's Cleon the First who was modified. Which means that any new clone of his would carry on this defect. I wonder, then. Are these modifications completely random? They inserted a worm, and the worm will expresses itself in different ways inside each individual? I t doesn't anwser my initial question, I'm rambling. Sorry. But mannerisms are not inherited. I don't get why XIV would behave so differently. I understand that he's left handed, and that's obviously a huge difference if they're all right handed. But there are other things that set him apart that have nothing to do with inherited genes. He didn't eat like them, he didn't move like them. That's not something that can be expressed through genetics. I have so many question, and I'm sorry for this dumping. I need to get them out.

Day's punishment for Azura was beyond cruelty. It was incredible. Rarely have I seen such effective repercusions from a villain. And I don't even think that Day is supposed to be a villain. Mouth was agape during his whole speech. He erased someone from collective memory. Who does that?!

Oh, and I'm so very happy that Mari Hardin said of Hari exactly what I was feeling. His speech smelled like bullshit to me. I really have no idea whether he improvised on the spot or if it was all well rehearsed. To me, it's 50/50. What a charismatic cult leader we have here. I had a hard time believing his story about the true reason behind the feud between Anacreon and Thespis. It sounded entirely plausible, but also so so very convenient. I love him, but I don't trust him.

So anyway, I'm sure I'll have many other thoughts coming to me soon, but as for now, I would say that I'm really glad I gave it a try. It's unlike any other show I've known.

Oh I completely understand your comment re: needing to recover. It's a very heavy show in many respects. It doesn't pull its punches, and it combines a number of extremely dark concepts under very beautiful sci-fi visage.

Re: Gaal and Salvor. Yes... And, I was also very upset that Hugo is gone by now. I secretly hope they will do a silly think like put him in stasis too and he somehow is there in S2... I know the hope is slim but both of them were such gangsters together :-(

Re: Day/Dusk -- Ahahaha yes, see, that's why I was telling you that maybe the experience in the Spiral DID affect Day. I was completely heartbroken. He really took a turn for "this is my son". His breakdown was completely warranted.

Re: Demerzel -- many, many questions remain as to what she did and why. I genuinely hope S2 will answer at least some of them. But that was also part of the reason why I was super inspired to write my fic! I THOUGHT ABOUT HER SO MUCH!

TBH the thing with their mannerisms and your point about Dawn not being able to copy them wasn't THE most well-thought-out, but what I took away is maybe he legit "couldn't" copy. Left-handed vs right-handed, some weird anomalies that make him move differently. But again, that's not something they explicitly defined.

Since insomnia is kicking my arse of late, I naturally tilted into the thoughts about the nature of the 3-act structure and why S2 of OFMD may have felt off and incomplete to a lot of people.

I am fully in agreement that we lost a lot of valuable time with only 8 episodes and a lot of it did feel rushed, but for the amount of story and set-up and growth and development they needed to fit into 4 hours of television, they did astonishing things.

DJenks has said from the very start that this is a story that has been planned out to take 3 seasons. It's literally a 3-act play and we are currently right in the middle of the worst part of that timeline according to every traditional 3-act structure.

Act one/season one is self-explanatory. Like New Hope in the Star Wars Trilogy or Fellowship of the Ring, this is the set-up. We're introduced to our protagonists and antagonists, the relationships are given a foundation.

The beginning is Stede's journey to becoming a real boy. The inciting incident, the one that actually pushes his change beyond "playing pirates" is meeting Ed. The second thoughts come together in episode 8/9 after his confrontations with Jack and Chauncey and episode 10 is the climax.

Act 2/season 2 is never going to be as smooth and simple as act 1/s1. A big part of the A2/S2 job is set up for A3/S3 and this is what we're seeing and why a lot of story threads seem to have been left dangling.

Again, to call back to Empire Strikes Back and The Two Towers, the structure is much the same: the original batch of people are divided and scattered, the big enemy from A1/S1 is looming, new allies make themselves known. In SW, this meant the introduction of Lando and Yoda as allies plus the hint of the Emperor lurking in the background. In LotR, we have the Rohirrim, Gondor and the Ents as allies and the expansion of Sauron's forces in Helm's Deep, Osgiliath and the winged wraiths.

There's a clear trajectory following the A2/S2 structure:

obstacle 1 - the crews separated and struggling

obstacle 2 - the end of episode 2 and the repercussions of his actions

twist - just when things start to settle, the Ned Low situation happen and Stede kills for the first time

obstacle 3 - Ed's struggle with his identity leading to him leaving

disaster - Ricky's assault on the Republic

crisis - do-or-die battle because they have no other choice

climax - the last 15 minutes of ep. 8 live here.

As with SW and LotR, there's an ending, but weighted with the knowledge of a story that is meant to continue. Each of those act 2 films end with the heroes still aware of the looming threat, some of them heading out on new missions, and some of them resting and healing. There's brief pause, brief respite, a moment to take a breath.

We have all the characters in place now and the battle-lines have been drawn. Luke still needs to confront Vader (I see you, impending Ed and Hornigold confrontation), Frodo still needs to destroy the ring, Aragorn still needs to lead the army against the Black Gate, the second Death Star is still hanging in the sky.

I'm so excited to see what S3 brings because we have so many arcs ready to go: Zheng's vengeance trip, the inevitable enforced out-of-retirement arc for Ed and Stede, Hornigold, Ricky trying to maintain his tenuous control of the republic given how many of his people were killed when the crew escaped, the pirate rebellion gathering forces.

Also how often do we get shows/films where the supporting cast are given this much storyline? We have a named/speaking-role cast of upwards of 15 central characters. That is a staggering amount of people to work with, when most shows would only focus on the leads and a couple of their friends. Six is the average for most TV shows, while comedies can inch higher because ensembles, but most ensembles don't get as much as our crew did.

I know a lot of people aren't happy about Izzy's death. I know I would have liked to see him a lot more, because he's such a grumpy old bitch and I love him and him affectionately roasting Ed and Stede would have made my entire month. But I'm also aware that narratively, as a figurehead of the old ways of piracy and "we were Blackbeard", it was a symbolic death as well - a sign of the death of the old ways of piracy and of Blackbeard as was.

(Also, they Obi-Wanned him. I'm not over that. Gave him the "if you strike me down I will become more powerful" speech. I'm just... guys, your star wars nerdery is showing XD)

So while it was flawed in places and pacing, given the scale of the story they're telling, the number of pieces and characters they had in play, and the arcs they have been setting up while also still keeping the humour, I am giving a standing ovation for a remarkable piece of work.

Oh so many!! I was a S1 shipper as well so I've always had the goggles on, which will undoubtedly influence this list (we're talking the littlest of the little moments) - novel quotes are in quotations

Callum glancing back to look at her in 1x03 when she stays behind to battle the smoke wolves

His happy little face when she's 'faced her fears' in 1x05 after they go down the waterfall

Literally every scene between them in 1x06 (which along with 1x05 and 1x04 are the Foundational Rayllum Eps, to me) + bonus shout out to Rayla winking at him twice while she's stretching

Callum admitting to her face that he was so distracted by her / thinking about her that he forgot the food they needed to live

Rayla teasing him in 1x07 just as an excuse to get all up in his space (like seriously, she's not nearly as touchy-feely with Ezran by any means)

"Everyone else started up the mountain, but Callum lingered. 'Are you okay?'"

"And for some reason, she found she wanted to share what she'd seen with Callum, even if she didn't tell anyone else."

"Rayla was now one of the best friends Callum had ever had."

The way Callum trails off for a split second with "She's more like a..." in 2x02 cause he isn't sure what to say / is considering it for probably the first time

Rayla not only admitting that she's scared of hurting him (at all) but that she's scared of hurting him to another Moonshadow elf, even though Moonshadow elves aren't supposed to show fear, ever

Callum being like "yeah we'll walk around an Entire Sea for you" and not caring at all about how long it'd take, only for 5 minutes later when they're going with the boat plan to be like "getting somewhere faster matters!!" like you love Rayla so much it makes you look stupid

Rayla briefly cradling the back of his head as she lays him down in 2x08

How Callum stares at her and just her as she leads him into the canyon in 2x09, only looking around at their surroundings instead of at her when she indicates for him too

Callum forgetting that Sol Regem, the giant dragon actively trying to kill them, is even there because he's so focused on trying to get to Rayla after she's caught in the rockslide in 3x01

The teasing/admiring looks they exchange over the whole fart flower thing. They're best friends <33

The little smile she gives him in 3x05 after she's helped pull him up the ambler

The tiny smile they hold and exchange in 3x07 after their mock flirting as they continue walking up the Storm Spire

What do you think will happen with just Paxton and Devi in S3 either by going by the title names or some made up theories? In my opinion I don't think they'll be together for that long give it till ep 8 or 9 they'll break up..

I assume you've already read my post and are just want my views purely on Devi and Paxton's journey in s3.

While those were very much in favour of Ben x Devi x Paxton journey in s3, I'm going to give some Daxton heavy theories since you asked. Should I take it as you feel I'm a Daxton expert, as I'm really not.

Prior to the titles being leaked, I was very prepared for a very Devi x Ben season, with Devi and Paxton possibly not together by the end of s3 but still hopeful for Daxton endgame in s4.

The titles now lead me to believe they are together for majority of s3 as they explore their monogamous relationship.

In short, s1 was the foundation building of Daxton and s2 was the awkward "friendship vs romanceship" exploration. I'll elaborate in a future post I've got drafted as I started answering this ask.

Devi argues how it would upset Paxton and make him insecure.

They try Jonah and Ben to find dead ends. They try Eric who is revealed as Lady Whistleboy.

Maybe Paxton finds out. Maybe he doesn't.

3x03 ... had a Valentine

Okay... so s2 never gave us a first proper Daxton date.

Let's see some growth from dates that involve the boys, Pizza and call of duty.

S3 ep 1 gives us a snippet of a pizza date but I'm sure they can do better for valentines day.

The pressure will be there and our boy may crumble, or he's going to recruit the help of Rebecca and pull something beautiful.

That is, until Trent hijacks his plans and turns it to a double date. Paxton doesn't know how to say no since Trent is no longer giving the icy shoulder.

If the writers feel like drama it up, let's get Aneesa and Ben on this date too.

I'm not going to suggest any date ideas yet as I'm currently writing some for my fic Grata as Hell.

But hey, if our long awaited Daxton pool scene happens in this ep, I may or may not cry.

If Paxton gets her a donut for Devi (with a card that reads, You look cool in that outfit), I legit will bawl. She's been wanting the damn donut since Ganesh Puja.

3x04 ... made someone jealous

Ben Gross goes to private school and it's all Nalini can talk about to Devi.

He overhears after climbing into her room (still yet to be caught, lol)

The insecurities flood him and oh Paxton, Paxton, Paxton ... green looks good on you.

While I personally don't like jealousy in my own relationship, God I do enjoy this drama on TV.

He's about to retreat back and ice Devi out, but they end up having a deep and meaningful.

She reassures him and all is well again.

UNTIL ... Paxton finds the pro/con board.

Dear lord, jealously ensues... then onto ep 5

3x05 ... been Ghosted.

I just believe this is more referring to Ben ghosting Devi rather than Paxton ghosting.

There is a different between ghosting and being iced out. When Paxton has iced her, we usually knew why. For him to ghost it could be from my unlikely theory for ep4. Also, negative to Paxtons growth with Devi.

The only thing I could think why Paxton would ghost of if tragedy strikes Paxtons family and he doesn't want to burden Devi with it. Very unlikely as he'd want her there.

3x06... had a breakdown

If it's not Andy Samberg narrated episode, and is more referring to Devi having a breakdown (compared to her losing her shit).

Paxton gets offered a scholarship to Stanford University, keeping him here in California. While Devi works towards Princeton and Ben towards Colombia.

The realisation that Devi may have to choose between Paxton, or her future, triggers a breakdown.

Devi gets waitlisted and Ben gets early acceptance (is this a thing when you're not a senior? I'm not from USA so our school system is different).

3x07 ... cheated

I'll elaborate another time on Devi or Paxton possibly cheating in school, as it better not be referring to relationships. I'll be hello pissed.

3x08 ... hooked up with my boyfriend

Devi and Paxton have sex for the first time.

I'm still hoping for Paxton to reveal Devi is his first because everyone assumes Paxton has had alot of sex. Maybe he has. But Daxton heart if here for extra special moments.

Beyond this I'm not ready to elaborate further.

What's been your favorite episode every season of monkie kid?

Honestly? All the specials have been my favorite. It might not be fair to compare what is essentially a mini-movie to individual episodes, but I think the fact that they hold up on their own even against the seasons as a whole, I think the ground is even enough.

A Hero Is Born was a great introduction to everything, made me feel for all the characters, hero, villain, or otherwise in such little time and gave us a great foundation for the world we were about to find ourselves in. The following episodes, while building upon the initial idea with action and hilarity, didn't do much to really leave an impact. I remember very specific moments from certain episodes, knowing they happened at some point in S1, but outside of 1, the racing one, 9, and bits of 10 I couldn't really tell you what happened in each individual episode.

(But if I had to pick an ep, Macaque's episode was absolutely top-notch. It's what got me to watch the show in the first place! Good times.)

Revenge of Spider Queen had some top-tier character interactions and development, showing off some hidden strengths of certain characters and unexpected weaknesses from others all wrapped up in a wonderful self-contained narrative that perfectly brought everyone and everything together while still leaving things open for the future to come. It's probably my favorite piece of LMK overall! The S2 episodes themselves, while more cohesive, engaging, and impactful than S1, still felt like something of a mixed bag. Basically S1 but spicer (and with a tendency to poke fun at itself that I appreciated)

If I had to pick an episode, it'd be Minor Scale (which I thiiiiiink is the one where LBD is mentally taunting MK over trying to save the girl? The cinematography and the emotion in that scene alone was *chef's kiss*. The finale of S2 was pretty incredible too; a very close second in this case)

And in the case of Season 3, it's easily my favorite overall season. All the different forces driving the plot were balanced very well (compared to how some things were handled in the previous seasons) and the sense of continuity helped keep me hooked from one episode to the next. However, this also led to some of the episodes being structured similarly, leading to not a lot of them fully standing out on their own. I'm pretty partial to the Amnesia one because of all the memorable moments that came of it (things that even boomeranged back into focus via the S3 Special), but while I may have it as a favorite episode, it's definitely not the best to come from the batch either.

But that S3 special? Everything came together so nicely that, even if it felt a tad bit contrived and rushed in a few places for the sake of awesome, I can let it go. I'm here to have fun watching, and I had so much fun with it. And that's not the worst complaint to have.

But the fact that I can watch all these episodes over and over and continually feel inspired makes this one of my favorite shows ever! ^^

Ep 1; OH NO

Not all relationships are happy, you and yuji are no exceptions to that. Complication arises as days passes by, instead of getting better the relationship keeps going downhill.

Ep 2; COOL OFF

Both of you started questioning ur relationship which eventually led to a cool off

Megumi comforted u and confession crossed his mind but held himself back

Ep 3; ADVICE

U came to megumi for help, asking him if relationship has to be like that. Like doubting the build up foundation itself

Ep 4; WELL, THIS IS AWKWARD

After many painful months of awkward moments with yuji, be it normal encounter like when the group is hanging out and both of you happen to reach out for the same food cue the awkward tension. The group took it well though, they became a great support for you both respecting the privacy and decision u two made

Ep 5; A LIL PUSH

after the hang out, nobara pulled megumi and told him to confess though find a right moment to but megumi still said no, he's not sure bcs he will feel bad for yuji

Ep 6; DAY OUT WITH BESTIES

yuta and y/n day & junpei and yuji day. talked about the relationship and what went wrong, got advice from their own best friends

Ep 7; NO LONGER A COUPLE?

you and yuji came to a conclusion of breaking up, the group shocked by the news. They thought it will be one hell of an awkward set up but surprisingly it was not like you two both played it off like the mature adults u are

Ep 8; CONFESSION

megumi confessed after months of break up, you considered his feelings but you're still confused on what to feel so u told him u gotta think about it. megumi understands but deep inside he's still regretting not saying it sooner

Ep 9; CONFUSED

you asked yuji to come over since yuta's busy with his career, he's the closest of a best friend u can call. though u chose not to tell him, u just want someone else's presence when you're this confused in life. it was not a good choice though, cuz old habits came back, the two of u unconscious started acting like u two used to back when u were a couple. u told yuji about it and it became awkward again, yuji came home that day, u agreed it's for the best and he does too.

Ep 10; CONCLUSION

u confronted megumi telling him that sadly u don't feel the same and u're sorry. u also assured him that there are lots of people out there willing to be his significant other, he shook his head to that telling u that he's only had this in mind with u only. u can't help but feel bad but he assured u that he's okay with it, later that day yuji asked to meet. he told u that he still have feelings for u but u decided that u don't feel anything anymore, u wanna stay single for a while not wanting to be in a relationship. yuji understood and asked if everything will still be the same as before even if u knew his feelings, u told him it was more than okay but some things might change also.

LOD S6 - Ep 4 - The Rational Thoughts

**SPOILERS FOR LOD6**

So the theories are coming in as to who Jo Davidson is related to. I’ve also had time to process. 

So I’ve re-watched **that** scene and listened to what Steve said and it is clear that the person Jo is related to is male. I missed that the first time, I thought he only used the pronoun “they” and had to check it a few times, but he said HE once. Also closed captions confirmed it as “he”. 

Here are some of my thoughts. 

Firstly, let's keep in mind that Kelly Mcdonald, who plays Jo was around 44/45 born in 1976, when it was made. I'm assuming the actors are playing their approximate real ages. 

As a writer, when it comes to a series, your opening book / programme / series, is laying the foundations for the story. You come back to this time and time again and this has been true of LOD. The characters and themes from S1 are still here in S6. 

There is also another element running through the entire series, all the links to VICE and historical sex abuse, actually including the real case of Jimmy Saville. 

Jo is related to someone we’ve known from the early seasons. 

The most popular theory is:-

Theory 1 - Jo is the daughter of Tommy Hunter. 

Tommy's DoB in LOD is known as 10-May-1965. Jo is going to be around 1976. This theory is therefore pretty unlikely.

Theory 2 - Jo is the sister of Tommy Hunter. 

Age wise, completely plausible. Tommy is canonically from Glasgow - Kelly MacDonald is Glaswegian. 

However, if this is correct, I do not believe she is part of the OCG as mentioned in my previous LOD posts.  Let's also not forget, Tommy Hunter was created by Jed and introduced in series one for a reason. He's massively important to the whole arc. He's so far been linked to seasons one and three.

ACC Milton

Now, the problem with these? If she knows she is related to any of these men, it would probably be in her personnel files. You normally have to declare relationships within an organisation such as the police. If, as I suspect, she’s not a bent copper, but someone trying to get to the same truth as AC-12, when she joined the force she would have no reason to fail to declare a connections to high ranking or long serving officers.

The exceptions to this would be Dot and Danny because she’s a little older than them - likely joined prior to them. There’s nothing in their known histories to link her though.  

If she doesn’t know she is related, well, that’s an interesting can of worms!

I'm confused, if Ricky was in love with Nini @ the start and @ the end of s1, what was the point of trying to develop Rina romantically over 3 eps, only to go back to Rini-centric scenes from ep 8-10. I mean did he spontaneously fall out of love with Nini and was slowly catching feelings for Gina for 3 episodes or do you think the writers did that to set a foundation if/when they eventually explore Rina? Because the Rina thing almost makes no sense, once you realize he has always loved Nini.

I thought it was pretty obvious Ricky initially only took comfort in Gina because he was forced to move on. Nini kept rejecting him so there was nothing he could do about it. And then I guess it was easy with Gina because they don’t have a long history together and they both have the same type of family struggles and so it was easy for them to bond. This is what annoys me because you can relate to someone and enjoy their company without having to twist it into something romantic because that’s not how life works.

I find it funny when Rinas say Rini is predictable or the easy choice and the writers should “take a chance on Rina” when Gina is actually the most easy choice than Nini is. Ricky’s mom told him that relationships are hard and sometimes things don’t work out and so for him to go back to Nini is a HUGE statement. He WANTS to fight for her even through the hard times. He’s not gonna just give up. What he and Nini have is not easy or simple by any means. It was probably easy when they were just friends but that all changed when they started dating.

I keep finding new salt about s7, like: Sendak has 5 warships, which is less than Voltron destroyed in s1 when they went to save Allura. They also had fully recharged the Lion Energy to form Voltron again through the power of friendship. Why why WHY didn't they just fly in, form Voltron, destroy all the ships, and then help sweep up the pieces/defeat Sendak's final ground assault?

My family has a long-running gag about Haley’s Comet. If there’s only one cookie left on the plate, someone will point off in a direction behind everyone and shout, “Oh my god! Haley’s Comet!” and when someone (because someone always does) turns to look, the person who shouted grabs the last cookie for themselves. 

One of the hardest parts of a large-scope story is the final set piece. You need the antagonist (or obstacle) to be big enough that it’ll appear unbeatable, with the odds stacked against the heroes. And you don’t want the heroes coming up with something out of left field (*koff* magic *koff*); the solution is most satisfying when it’s an ingenious extrapolation of some skill or knowledge you’d planted earlier in the story. 

The strategy — defeat the Big Bad — is almost never in doubt. The tension lies in how the heroes will manage that, the tactics they’ll use. Unfortunately, when you dissect most of VLD’s finales, they consist of Attack of the Haley’s Comets. 

S1, they went in with no plan except a frontal attack against an opponent with a thousand times their resources. Good thing they all had plot armor. 

S2, the finale involved getting Zarkon to come to them, so they could shut down his servers to implant a virus (that did what, exactly?) while the rest of the lions dog-fought (lion-fought?) a bunch of sentries for the nth time, then Allura forced the entire station-ship-whatever to go through The Universe’s Largest Teladuv to send Zarkon, uh, far away, for some reason. Then they formed Voltron and sliced at the big station that was again a thousand times larger, fought Zarkon in a Voltron-sized suit of armor and, uh, lastly left the scene via wormhole. Like the station was back online, clearly not destroyed, and besides, Zarkon spent most of S2 easily able to catch up with them, once he knew where they were, so not sure why ‘sending him far away’ had any purpose. 

(This makes Star Wars’ “shoot at this tiny duct on the surface of the Death Star” look downright brilliantly efficient in comparison.) 

S3 had no finale, and S4 involved, uh, Voltron going up against a planet. And almost getting blown up. While two other teams tackled super cannons a system away. Shutting down the relay station to leave a gap for those teams to capture the cannons was possibly the only tactically smart move I’ve seen in a VLD finale, tbh. 

S5′s finale… uh, Oriande, right. S6′s finale was… well, we had the copy-paste Winter Soldier fight between Keith and not-Shiro, followed by Sincline and Voltron facing off. The latter of which seemed to mostly involve a lot of yelling. *yawn*

S6′s finale, well, you already summed it up. I guess ‘just go right for the warships with the cannons’ would’ve ended the battle too soon, so they had to run around for an episode or so. Y’know, make sure we’re suitably distracted from the Haley’s Comet gambit and not realize until too late VLD had stolen yet another cookie.

When it comes to prepping for the finale, Star Wars is a great example of a simple finale that works, because it laid a solid foundation. From very early, the story drives home two things: the plans to the Death Star contain major intel, and Luke’s an amazing and intuitive pilot. We get early chatter about Luke racing, with reminders like his crack about shooting womp rats. Both elements are made credible by the story never contradicting these setups, so when you put together teeny duct + amazing pilot + tunnel-shot cinematography, you get a marvelous heart-pounding finale.  

With the exception of S7 using the shields (a callback to S6E1), VLD has been pretty weak at hinting at skills or knowledge ahead of time. And that’s ignoring that the EPs/writers don’t seem to understand battle tactics vs a solid and efficient strategy. 

They do manage to give Lance consistent tactical smarts (despite fen calling him the best strategist, which he’s not), but otherwise the EPs/writers seem fuzzy on how the two perspectives impact characterization. So right there, they don’t even have a solid sense of how a team would split duties to play to each person’s strength, and that means we end up with battle scenes where Shiro is focused on A, Keith zooms off for B, Lance yells at Keith, while Pidge and Hunk just scream a lot in the background.

A strategy is the big-picture objective: “We need to retrieve Allura.” It’s what must be achieved to consider any action complete: capture that hill, rescue the princess, block the reinforcements. “We come from this direction, move fast, hit here, and hit hard” are tactics: the steps to achieve that objective. Against an enemy with 1000x more resources and size, it’s also a damn stupid tactic. 

The commander sets the strategy, the tactician figures out how the army will manage that. The team’s arrival at the Balmera is one of the few times VLD uses the concepts properly. As the general, Allura defines the main strategic goal. As the field commander, Shiro divides up the labor. Keith and Lance are tasked with blocking reinforcements, and Lance figures out the most efficient tactic: lock the barn doors before the horses get out. 

For the most part, Keith is a strategic thinker, not a tactical one, and that makes him a less useful second-in-command compared to Lance’s pragmatic tactical approach. In fact, those two would be a powerful pair if the writers understood the differences to highlight the two approaches, and how each is crucial for a successful outcome.

What most insults me, as a viewer (and yes, I would’ve said the same at age 10, thanks to reading plenty of history with battle strategies), is that the EPs/writers seem to have decided complicated is a synonym for smart. The result is a series of finales that are actually… pretty stupid. 

I mean, have these people never even read Lao Tzu? Just as a bare minimum. 

What about subterfuge? Like, say, a cloaking mechanism. Wouldn’t that be handy. That got used once for all of Voltron, and it was never mentioned again. Sure, copilot to assist Pidge with the cloaking mechanism? Take your pick: Shiro, Coran, Romelle, I’m sure at least one of them could’ve managed it. Hell, as much effort VLD put into making Kosmo the smartest plot device ever, the damn wolf could’ve done it. 

All warfare is based on deception. It’s not a dishonorable thing to pull one over on the enemy. Wormholing in is only half the sneakage, people. 

Avoid striking at what is strong; hit the enemy’s weak points. Instead, Voltron just goes head-on, over and over, and the only reason it wins is because that’s what’s in the script. Take advantage of chaos: with Zarkon absent in S3, threre should’ve been tremendous opportunities (mostly from previously strong areas now weakened by the internal turmoil), but instead Voltron’s on the outskirts freeing planets like Puig. Well, sure, fine, but is that really the best use of the team’s limited resources? 

Don’t move until you have the advantage, or something to be gained. Aim for what the enemy holds most precious. When the enemy fights blindly and desperately, use their blindness against them to lure them into an ambush (which is possibly the one maxim at use in S2′s finale). Related to that, Lotor does act on at least one principle: rousing and forcing the lions to reveal themselves, so Lotor can determine their vulnerabilities. 

In a war story, I’d look to the uses of strategy and tactics as a way to reveal characterization (of which Lotor circa S3 is the best, if not only, example). But specifically this quote from Sun Tzu: 

If you know the enemy and know yourself, you need not fear the result of a hundred battles. If you know yourself but not the enemy, for every victory gained you will also suffer a defeat. If you know neither the enemy nor yourself, you will succumb in every battle.

It’s a classic trope in war stories to have the strategist insist that knowing the enemy — thinking like them, understanding them — is key to victory. Thing is, it’s true. If you don’t understand the enemy’s assumptions, biases, desires, and dislikes, you won’t know how to use those against the enemy. You won’t be able to divine strength from weakness. 

In S1/S2, Allura (and Coran) was the best-placed to understand Zarkon’s objectives, the way he thought, the reactions he’d have to any action. Shiro was a distant second for strategist, with more immediate (if fuzzy) experiences of the empire. In S3, with Lotor as the new antagonist and a completely unknown variable, this really would’ve been the best time for Keith to come to the forefront as a strategic thinker. Allura or Shiro might assume their understanding of Zarkon could be applied to Lotor, while Keith’s lack of firsthand knowledge meant a lack of bias for seeing Lotor as, well, Lotor. 

There could’ve been some interesting contrasts to play with, there, in terms of the different strategic minds on the team. Especially when places against the differing tactical brains on the team (Lance, Hunk, Pidge). But I guess we’ll have to leave that for fandom to fix, along with that mess of a finale in S7.

Andi Mack 2x23 Review

I was shocked at how pivotal Keep a Lid on It turned out to be! J*rus sunk and Juffy rose and a lot of other interesting stuff. Let’s dig into it.

Positives:

Cyrus’ crush on Jonah was always going to end with him either moving on or getting turned down by straight boy Jonah and I’m glad they went with the former. It gives Cyrus more control over his own life and shows great character growth. He no longer idolizes Jonah but cherishes their close friendship.

I thought J*rus would end closer to the end of the season but in retrospect it’s clear that the show had to sink the ship sooner rather than later. It’s been 10 eps since their last solo scene and they’ve only had solo scenes in 6 out of 23 eps so far (including the space otters dinner in what was 1x13). Terri talks a big game about the importance of momentum and it’s clear that Cyrus’ story line was being stalled until his crush on Jonah ended. 

I noted last week that the show was reaching back to S1 with Cyrus in the vest and we also got Jonah calling Cyrus, Cy-Guy for the first time since S1 I believe as well as a callback to their hug at the space otters dinner.. It’s a very deliberate choice and allows the audience to see the growth and change in their relationship, Cyrus no longer worships Jonah and Jonah has largely dropped his smiley perfect image.

I know some people are still clinging to hope but guys J*rus is over. It was never going to happen, not on this show and not on this network. Hell Terri probably never even asked Disney if Jonah could be bi because she probably never intended him to be bi. Cyrus’ crush was always just a plot device to discover his sexuality. And if you don’t want to listen to the show, listen to Josh, he’s very bluntly told us that J*rus is a dead ship. Take time to heal and then hop aboard Cyrus’ real romantic ship: Tyrus.

I felt a sense of vindication as Juffy rose, I got a lot of scorn for predicting after the 2b promo that Jonah was going to be Buffy’s crush. And so many people told me that the yearbook wasn’t connected to the crush or that she didn’t actually have a crush or that her crush was on some irrelevant extra. But here we are and Juffy is thriving.

I had a moment of doubt last week after learning that Jandi survives past the art show but after seeing 2x23 I’m confident that Juffy is endgame. And yes I’ve seen the extended 2x24 promo and I don’t think that her crush is on Walker. Will she talk to Walker? Almost certainly but Jonah will also be there and I’m sure she’ll talk to him too. I have other reasons why I don’t think Wuffy is in the cards but first I want to talk more about Juffy in this episode.

I’ve been beating the drumbeat about Buffy’s impending crush since 2x15 and until tonight I thought it would be a disaster but I actually think that Juffy will work very well. Buffy knows exactly how to communicate directly with Jonah, something Andi never was able to. It also makes for a neat parallel with 2x22 where Tyrus communicated well while Jandi struggled as usual. And in this ep we also get to see Ham and Celia not communicating well.

When Jonah came over and he and Buffy had their  brief banter it immediately reminded me of that easy chemistry Muffy had. Obviously the show never planned for Juffy but they lucked out big time that the actors have great chemistry. It can’t be ignored how touched Buffy is that Jonah thought of the unburied time capsule and went to such lengths to get her jersey and get the whole team to sign the ball.

And who do they bring up right after talking about Jonah? Marty, Buffy’s old flame. Buffy and the audience get a final bit of closure and it helpfully reminds us that Buffy was sure that she didn’t have a crush on Marty but later this ep she is very sure that she now has a crush on someone. And when she tells Cyrus she has a crush she specifically mentions that it’s new.

Let’s assume for a moment that her crush actually is on Walker. Why would she not want Andi to know? Andi already kissed Jonah and chose him before she moved away. Sure it might be a little awkward at first but Jandi is now official and Andi only went on the one date with Walker so it’s not like she has any claim on him. Jandi, Tyrus, and Wuffy would be neat and tidy but where’s the drama, the angst, the passion? And why would she say that nothing is going to happen? As far as she knows Walker is single, there’s nothing stopping a confident driven woman like Buffy from pursuing Walker if she has a crush on him.

Andi Mack is a tween soap opera and it relies on its twists and turns. I just can’t see what pairing Buffy would Walker would achieve. They’ve had one scene together and they barely talked. Sure the portrait was nice but what kind of connection do they have? And why would Buffy suddenly develop a crush on Walker after learning about the nice things Jonah did for her? And if Wuffy happens that means that Jandi and Tyrus are endgame so why is there a need to pair Buffy with someone? Darius is great but wouldn’t it be easier and cheaper for the show to write him off and just have Buffy stay single?

Which brings me to the big structural reason why I believe Juffy is endgame. Buffy having a crush was a late addition to S2 only because Marty left. If Marty stays then Muffy would have been endgame but with him gone Buffy doesn’t have a partner. Cyrus was always going to end up with TJ so he’s taken care of which just leaves Andi and Jonah. Given how linked Jandi and J*rus have been since the very beginning I think J*rus sinking means that Jandi is doomed soon, even if they make it out of S2 still together. And of course Cyrus has the swing scenes with his endgame partner TJ just two eps before Andi meets her endgame partner Walker.

I think Terri’s original plan was for Muffy, Tyrus, and Wandi to be endgame while Jonah remained single in S3. This would have been a great twist, sinking the two original ships of the show and removing Jonah, who was explicitly introduced as a love interest, from the dating pool. This leaves 3/4ths of the kids in relationships which the show can mine for drama. But once Marty left, Buffy was left without and partner and suddenly you have half of the kids left single which is difficult for a tween oriented show to pull off. And of course Asher’s star has risen dramatically since S1 and Disney almost certainly wants their hottest star to remain a love interest.

Terri has spoken very negatively about Jandi in the past and I can’t imagine her making them endgame unless Disney forced her too. But paring Buffy with Jonah solves those problems: Terri still gets her big twist, half of the kids wont be left without partners, and Disney still gets to market Asher as a romantic lead. Whereas if Jandi is endgame there’s no need to give Buffy a crush as 3/4th’s of the kids will still have partners.

We don’t know when the writers knew for sure that Marty was never coming back but it must have been by the writing of ep 2x21 by the latest as that’s when they wrote that farewell letter from Marty. Not coincidentally it’s also the ep where we get Jonah’s ‘’Buffy likes me doesn’t she?’’ line and we see him spring into action and get Buffy the perfect gift, something he’s never been able to do for Andi.

And Jonah has had foreshadowy lines like that before. In 2x18 he asks if TJ are Cyrus are friends and later that same ep he asks if Bex and Bowie are getting married. We know that Cyrus and TJ will be more than friends and we know that Bex and Bowie will get married so why not Buffy having a crush on Jonah?

We also got Buffy referencing arm wrestling with Jonah which led to their only significant solo interaction back in A Good Hair Day. It reminded me of when Cyrus referenced meeting TJ at the swings when he and Buffy were comforting Jonah in 2x19. The show wanted us to think about the swing scene and what it meant and the show now wants us to think about the arm wrestling scene and what it meant. Juffy at least has some foundation but there’s nothing to support Wuffy.

My guess is that we’ll either get a half assed denial from Buffy next ep that she doesn’t like Jonah or it won’t be brought up directly but Cyrus will keep needling her. And Cyrus knows very well what having a crush on Jonah is like and would understand why Buffy doesn’t believe anything will happen or why she doesn’t want Andi to know. Next ep is also where we’ll get Buffy’s ‘’you two look so cute’’ line delivered to Jandi at the spoon. What did Cyrus do once he realized he liked Jonah? Hid it and became the world’s no 1 Jandi shipper. Perhaps we’ll see Buffy do the same.

One last reason I believe Jandi is doomed is because Andi didn’t make a new bracelet she took the old one from her memory box (ie from S1). But just like Cyrus’ vest wasn’t a magic totem neither will the bracelet be the totem that solves Jandi’s problems. 

I also thought it was a subtle nod to digging up the past and a little hint that we’ll be seeing Gabriel return from Bex’s past (and memory box) in the season finale.

I’m so glad that they didn’t mention the stupid 2 months timeskip. Someone must have realized what a disaster that would be.  And the excuse for Buffy moving back was a lot better than i thought it would be.

I wonder how Cyrus will come out in the future. He can’t say he has a crush on Jonah anymore but he at least has the swing that way reference to use with Tj, or TJ with him.

Negatives:

Not going to sugarcoat this; we just saw Ham have a midlife crisis and effectively decide to end his marriage and abandon his family. Of course he’ll be back and the show will pretend all is well but no man in his mid 50′s leaves his wife and family to go on a months long solo trip unless his marriage has collapsed. A lot of kids will be turning to their parents tonight asking if Ham leaving means he and Celia will be getting a divorce.

One thing I’ve been wondering all season is why haven’t we seen Cyrus in his vest friend shirt? At this point I think Disney forbade it because it would look too coupley.

here’s a thing about s1 eps 10 & 11…and how it makes it clear that shiro and allura and intended perceived to be seen as on equal footing.

so allura decides to come along with the team on the mission. 

she asks if anyone has a problem with her going along with them. of course it’s pretty much less of a genuine question and more of a “i’m going and you can meet me in the pit if you’ve got something to say” tone lol.

none of the paladins object, because even if they did have a problem it’s not their place to say. allura is their leader. the only one with any problems is coran, which is entirely understandable. we know he deeply cares for her like a father would. coran turns to shiro because he’s the only one who would object. while coran could say something if he wanted to, coran probably doesn’t want to appear disrespectful or domineering towards allura. while coran is a father figure to allura, he still respects her leadership. 

coran turns to shiro not because shiro is above her in any sort of way, but because he knows they are coleaders. he’s her equal, so if anyone were to speak up or have any reservations he’d be the only paladin who could do so without appearing entirely disrespectful.

but shiro doesn’t, he doesn’t hesitate to say allura can come. not only because he doesn’t mind it, but because he knows it’s not his place to tell allura where she can and can’t go. from here we can clearly see the difference between coran and shiro’s relationship to allura. regardless of how you interpret allura’s age, he’s not a parental figure to her at all. nor does he view her as his subordinate. lauren montgomery, a showrunner, describes allura’s position on the team in comparison to shiro’s.

“Shiro may be the head of Voltron, but Allura is really the one in charge of the whole operation. They all look to her for guidance, and it’s often she who makes the final call” (source)

they are intended to be seen as coleaders. equals, in which allura often makes the final call. that’s power, and it’s something that shiro clearly recognizes. this doesn’t mean that shiro doesn’t care about allura’s safety. he just knows it’s not his job to boss her around.

so later on, allura rather impulsively decides to go to zarkon’s central command. shiro says that he’ll come with her because of how dangerous the situation is. allura immediately tells shiro she doesn’t need his permission. 

...the paladins reactions are pretty clear, they know it’s not his place to say that she must bring him with her.

but we have to be considerate of shiro’s past here as a former prisoner. he knows what the galra can do to people. it’s already established earlier in the episode that shiro boss allura around or tell her what to do. he’s not doing this because he’s protective or because he thinks that allura is weak.

only when pidge explains why shiro is needed, from a technical standpoint, is allura convinced to bring shiro along. at the end of the day it was allura’s decision to make, and she only allows shiro to come after pidge reasoned with her. even so, it was more of a “well fine i guess if you put it that way”. either way, it was allura who made the final judgement. she’s in control.

so later on, shiro snaps a bit at allura for holding her gun incorrectly. he doesn’t yell at her, just speaks sternly, and actually comes off as disappointed. he expects her to know how to hold the gun correctly. he doesn’t speak in a patronizing tone, or keeps the gun away from her. he moves the gun in the correct position and hands it right back to allura. 

allura doesn’t back down or apologize, either. she snaps right back at shiro and says it’s a tense situation. they’re clearly not afraid to speak their minds to each other.

towards the end of the episode, allura orders shiro to leave her and get in the pod. shiro however refuses to leave her, but not out of disrespect for her authority. he cares for allura as a fellow teammate, and plus knows what it’s like to escape from a dangerous situation leaving a teammate behind. like allura, he’s self-sacrificial. he’d rather go back into the galra’s clutches then leave a teammate behind again.

....of course we all know allura throws him in the pod to safety.

arriving back without her, shiro immediately decides his only choice is to rescue allura. it’s an impulsive and emotionally-charged decision. hunk even points out how he previously said go straight to the central command would be a mistake, and keith reasons that going on the mission is a reckless decision, putting voltron at risk. shiro is not just putting himself at risk, he’s putting the whole team, he’s putting voltron at risk, he’s putting everything at risk.

while shiro is generally the calm and collected leader, he’s determined to get allura back no matter what valid points his team points out. shiro can make impulsive decisions like allura, even if it’s much rarer and under high emotional circumstances.

afterwards, there is a moment where shiro apologizes to coran for letting allura slip away. it’s a quiet moment after coran snaps at shiro. shiro obviously feels guilt here, even though it’s not his fault. 

coran acknowledges that it isn’t his fault. we don’t know if shiro ever told anyone what actually happened outside of him saying “she sacrificed herself for me”.  but we do know that coran is aware about allura’s self-sacrificial tendencies, like her saving the balmera. i think coran kind of put two and two together here.

even if coran doesn’t know the full details of what happened, coran knows shiro was there as a teammate, he wasn’t there to babysit her. even though coran is a fatherly figure to allura, he doesn’t treat her like a reckless child. he respects her decisions. while coran snapped at shiro in the heat of things, he doesn’t blame shiro or treat him like he’s responsible for controlling allura’s decisions and actions.

when the team goes back for allura, she’s immediately upset. even though allura can be impulsive and reckless, that’s not her only quality. we know that allura is a capable leader, even if she’s still has growing to do. she’s aware that bringing voltron to an obvious trap to save her is a risky and reckless decision on shiro’s part.

(i could go on a whole rant about allura being self-sacrifical and her self-worth and but that’s a meta for another day)

no matter how you view shiro and allura, these episodes are important because it gives us further insight to how they interact with each other. it reinforces in their dynamic as coleaders, and establishes a foundation for future character development between shiro and allura.

tl;dr

shiro and coran have very different relationships towards allura

coran’s is like an advisor, and also fatherly, while shiro is her teammate and coleader

neither of them treat her like a reckless kid who doesn’t know what she’s doing, even when they’re concerned for her safety

allura can be reckless but she’s still a capable leader
