Emmure. Yeah I really fuckin' like Emmure, they're a good band and just get a lot of shit from bandwagon jumpers, I don't think Frankie is half as bad as people say, seems like a chilled out dude and let's just talk about Josh Travis, they're constantly labelled as talentless and lazy because of a lot of palm mutes and 0-000-0000 riffs but Josh Travis can play anything and everything that Meshuggah can without breaking a sweat. If he joined Meshuggah tomorrow you wouldn't know the difference. If you like Meshuggah and call Emmure talentless and musically lazy it makes you an image driven elitist hypocrite. Period.

Listening to Frankie Palmeri right before the seated meditation session keeps you from becoming overly flaccid, hands down. Oops, I mean under the belly button.

The new Emmure album is an absolute banger. If you haven’t checked it out yet, you’re sleeping on it.

On This Day (7/2): Warped Tour 2010
Warped Tour: Bring Me the Horizon / Four Year Strong / Whitechapel / Andrew WK / The Dillinger Escape Plan / Parkway Drive / Emmure / Suicide Silence / Enter Shikari (07/02/2010; Sam Houston Race Park, Houston, TX)
Well hell, with this being the last year of Warped Tour and all, I guess this is a fitting one to be writing up. I was never a Warped Tour kid. I only attended this one and I avoided every other year. I’m not paying absurd amounts of money and standing in the heat all day so I can see like one band I give a fuck about. But this year was pretty stacked so I attended the whole thing with my friend Jonathan.
It was marginally more bearable than usual because it rained like hell all day. I’ll take wetness and mud over the Texas heat in the dead of summer. It made it hard to smoke and my phone got ruined, but it is what it is.

We started off with Enter Shikari, who had already pretty much gone to shit but still played enough old material to satisfy us old fucks.
Next up was Suicide Silence. I don’t remember their set so much as I remember afterwards. It was actually a moment I’ll never forget. Shortly after leaving the stage, Jonathan and I saw Mitch Lucker riding a fucking bicycle through the fairgrounds and he stopped and asked us if we knew where an ATM was. We told him the nearest one, then kissed his ass for a while about the set. It was a great interaction with a legend who passed before his time. It was the only time I got to meet Mitch before he died (I obviously have not met him since he died either, you idiots), so it will always stay in my mind.
Emmure and Parkway Drive played back to back and it was perfect. Emmure was just as wonderful and shitty as they always were in those days. Nowadays they’re actually a good live band, against all odds, thanks to the whole band quitting and being replaced by way more talented people to back Frankie up, who has also worked hard to get his voice back, but at this time it was fucked. None of the shittiness ever mattered because their songs were so good.
I’ve never been a big Parkway Drive guy, but they played “Dead Man’s Chest” and it kicked ass, especially the part where Jonathan’s stupid ass managed to break his wrist in the pit for it. My stupid ass was still three years away from breaking my wrist in a different rain soaked pit.
Rather than do the smart thing and leave, Jonathan stuck out the rest of the fest with his broken wrist. We’re men, Dee, it’s what we do. At that point, we split up and I headed over to watch Andrew WK. Dude was awesome as always. It’s Andrew WK. You know what you’re getting. I got some sick pictures with him with my busted phone.

Then off to Dillinger Escape Plan. This was the first time I had seen them in all their fucking glory. If you know anything about Dillinger live shows, you know it blew my fucking mind. This first time still stands out in my mind as one of the greatest times I saw them. They were just such an unstoppable live force. They really had no business among most of the crap at Warped Tour, but they brought it in a way that half the people there did not understand and it was beautiful.
I caught the end of Whitechapel because they were on at the same time as Dillinger, but what I heard was impeccable.
By this time, we really should have left. But Jonathan and I always get our money’s worth, so we stuck around through Four Year Strong (garbage) and Bring Me the Horizon (semi-garbage, by this point). I’ll never forget Oli Sykes’ hilarious calls for walls of death in his British accent, but the music was forgettable for the most part. Should have seen them a year or two earlier when they were actually legit.
Overall, Warped Tour that year was a fucking fun experience that still sticks out in my mind all these years later. It sucks that that will never happen again, but, if you’ve looked at any of the lineups in the last few years, it was never going to happen again regardless. 2010 was just a bizarre outlier where it was worth attending. For the most part, Warped Tour sucked and it pretty much won’t be missed.
