Last week, the New York Times ran a nearly 5,000-word piece about Taylor Swift in its opinion section. The thoughtful essay, by editor Anna Marks, specifically considers the superstar’s creative output by asking the question: What if, as so many of the references in them suggest, some of Swift’s songs are about being in love with women?
Marks is only about the millionth person to suggest that Swift might be dropping clues that she is gay in her work, a theory known as “Gaylor”: Here’s a 2022 feature about the fan theory that ran in Jezebel; here’s an explainer from later that year in Vox that gets into it, which, oh, also references a Vox deep dive from the height of the COVID-19 pandemic on “the queering of Taylor Swift”; here’s a Rolling Stone piece pegged to the release of Midnights; here’s a piece that ran in Slate after the re-release of Red that explored similar theories. I could go on and on. You get it. The Times is not exactly breaking new ground here.
Marks’ piece does stand out in a few ways: It’s very long. It’s in the New York Times, the “paper of record,” and that apparently confers some vague special responsibility to every word it publishes. It does not report on what the fans are saying but instead identifies Marks herself as the fan with the corkboard and red string. If it’s even a conspiracy theory at all, the piece openly muses about its subject: “There are some queer people who would say that … she has already come out, at least to us.”
The opinion piece has “prompted a fair amount of outrage online,” writes Danielle Cohen in the Cut, “where even those of us who enjoy the occasional Gaylor theories found these assertions—and the fact that they were made in an esteemed national newspaper—a few steps too far.” Among the outraged are Swift’s “associates”: “Because of her massive success, in this moment there is a Taylor-shaped hole in people’s ethics,” a “person close to the situation” told a CNN reporter, noting that, were Swift a man, this article “wouldn’t have been allowed to be written.”
Leaving aside that this very same author wrote a piece about Harry Styles’ potential queerness, it’s true enough that Swift isn’t a man. But she’s a cultural phenomenon. Her songs were streamed over 26 billion times last year on Spotify alone. Her celebrity is everywhere you look right now. It has made her a billionaire, and boosted the economy to boot.

I'm not great with words but, What if the "Me" in Anti-hero is the same as in "Me!"?
Now hear me out. She's been trying to come out for a while, and she got really close with "Me!" But ultimately did not. So Anti-hero is the refection on that. Like "got tired of my schemeing" maybe someone got tired of having the beard around. What if she's not looking in the mirror because she knows she already knows what's there. She ostracized herself in saying "I'm the monster on the hill". Some of the general public do truly believe the LGBT+ community are monsters and bad and everything negative you can imagine.

Where the rubber meets the road.
Tumblr media
These two didn't just have a relationship, they had a (soul)utionship. "The Prophecy" Hand on the throttle Thought I caught lightning in a bottle...
What these two had was magical. There is no debate that Karlie Kloss and Taylor Swift were electric: (I am using past tense for the moment, I will refer to them in present tense a bit later in the post)
Tumblr media
Fast forward a decade later to Fortnight. This record did not hit me immediately the way "Folklore" and "Evermore" did, It has almost been a week since its release and I hadn't been fully onboard with TTPD. I was expecting something different, something not familiar and I had quite literally thought maybe Jack Antinoff and Taylor Swift had reached their limit together as collaborators. The music produced by Aaron Dressner had flavors and connections to "Folklore" and "Evermore," while parts of the album was reminiscent of "1989." My next thought that maybe the three of them had done all they could do.
Tumblr media
And then the Matty Healy conversation exploded across the net (le sigh), and I just about gave up on the record.
Tumblr media
I damn near had a sanguinary struggle within myself over The Tortured Poets Department (I know, that is very dramatic lol), and then I finally got it. The brilliance of this woman is unmatched.
The last song "The Manuscript." Now and then she rereads the manuscript Of the entire torrid affair
"The entire torrid affair" meaning the last decade (probably longer, but I am sticking with 2014-2024). The title isn't lost on me and many others - The Man-U-Script.
The last segment of the song
The only thing that's left is the manuscript One last souvenir from my trip to your shores Now and then I reread the manuscript But the story isn't mine anymore
She is closing the chapter on all of it. It's over, the countless theories, the stories we all have created about her. They're our stories now, we built them into a formidable, monstrous entity that took on a life of its own. "The last souvenir" are her words to us on this album. From the Swifities, to the Gaylors/Kaylors, to the haters, critics, industry, fans, media. She won't play this game anymore. Taylor gave enough clues on this album to make EVERYONE'S theory plausible (Karlie, Joe, Matty, Travis, Harry, Kim etc). She connected threads to come full circle, which brings us back to "1989," that 1980s syth-pop (hello! "I Can Do It With A Broken Heart"). This is why she and Jack Antonoff brought us back to where it all began, Karlie Kloss and #Kissgate (Dianna Agron, too, who can forget "Wonderland). Aaron Dressner summons moments within this records of the two albums that fractured my soul, F & E. That folky-pop melody that gets into your skin to change the DNA. No joke, I sobbed listening to "Folklore" and "Evermore."
With TTPD, Taylor comes in like a thrashing, tumultuous storm; at times seething and others admonishing. She is singing to herself, for herself and without need of approval from the mainstream radio (or anyone else). TTPD is messy, too much, not enough, vulnerable, real, relatable and she is tired of our collective shit.
Tumblr media
Back to "The Manuscript" This Era has come to an end and she is leaving us with the ruins, the aftermath of what she went through: being forced to hide who she really is, having to placate the rabid fans who believe the stories of every boy she has ever dated. She has had zero privacy and the only safe place Taylor has ever had was her music, she is the ONLY one who knows to whom she sings. Does she love her fans, of course, but Mother is tired and done. She is ready to come clean and live the life she has crafted to keep in secret in order to protect the innocent.
The beards, NDAs, slight of hand, she is smashing all that we know. It's not her reflection she seeks to shatter, it's the illusions. In "Fortnight" the nurse, a woman (cannot convince me that it's not Karlie. A doorframe is 6'8" and that nurse is about 5" shorter that frame, which would make that person 6'3" :), comes to save her, gives her the key to set her free. The men in the video are the ones who are torturing her. Like the last 10 years, The poet has been tortured by the department of men: Joe, John, Conner, Jake, Harry, Calvin, Tom, Joe, Matty, Travis, Scooter, Scott, and the list goes on.
Tumblr media
It's "Robin" that has got a choke-hold on me.
Buried down deep And out of your reach The secret we all vowed To keep it from you in sweetness
She is singing to a child, a kid, and I am going to say a little boy. Is this song about Levi? I am going to say yes. Hands down the gem of the album, and our cue to realize she is telling us what is next, her family, the loves of her life: Karlie and the kids. That is what she wants and that will be her next chapter. We struggle to interpret the Taylor that is always ten steps ahead of us. Her Eras Tour, this will be the last one for a while. Once it has wrapped, I wouldn't be surprised if she disappeared for a spell. Will she produce more work, sure. Perform, probably, but this last decade has taken a toll, and this tour has been a herculean effort. Hence, its wild success. Could she retire (FLORIDA)? It's possible, but she would never tell us, we would have to figure that out for ourselves.
I have more to say, but it's late and I am sleepy. As I get lost in the piano of "The Manuscript" I am reminded of the book "The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo"
Tumblr media
Not sure if anyone is going to see or read this, but I needed a place to write my thoughts about this extraordinary album that I almost let slip through my fingers. Good night and sleep well everyone <3

hi so the New York Times just published a gaylor manifesto and since you’ve been my main source of info for this stuff I wanted to share it https://www.nytimes.com/2024/01/04/opinion/taylor-swift-queer.html
Tumblr media
sigh.
okay. if anyone wants to read along, check out the unpaywalled article here:
https://archive.is/uHxuV
before we really get into this I just want to say that I looked into author Anna Marks' previous contributions to the NYT opinion column, of which there are two: a piece about how Marks, as a queer fan, is "heartbroken" by Harry Styles 'appropriating" queer culture by wearing ugly clothes, and an audio piece about how women referring to themselves as "girls" on TikTok is actually radical feminist praxis. so. hot mess express up in here.
anyway this piece is a shitshow that basically plays at the greatest hits from Gaylor conspiracy theories, mainly harping on her inability to come out because of some intangible threat it would pose to her career:
While Ms. Swift’s songs, largely written from her own perspective, cannot always conform to the idea of a woman our culture expects, her celebrity can. That separation, between Swift the songwriter and Swift the star, allows Ms. Swift to press against the golden birdcage in which she has found herself. She can write about women’s complexity in her confessional songs, but if ever she chooses not to publicly comply with the dominant culture’s fantasy, she will remain uncategorizable, and therefore, unsellable. Her star — as bright as it is now — would surely dim.
immediately beneath this is an image of Taylor Swift crumpled face-down onstage, looking wet; if nothing else, it's peak melodrama.
the most glaring thing about this, to me, is Marks' willful omission of other queer pop stars. she opens the article with a jarring discussion of lesbian country singer Chely Wright's 2006 suicide attempt and mentions a few contemporary celebrities who have been encouraged to stay closeted -  Cara Delevingne, Colton Haynes, Elliot Page, Kristen Stewart, Raven Symoné and Sam Smith - but with the obvious exception of Smith, they're hardly Swift's peers. as I've said before in my worst and most stupid post, the argument that outing herself would "dim Taylor's star" falls apart pretty significantly when you look at the success of artists like Lil Nas X, Billie Eilish, Doja Cat, Cardi B, and Halsey. Taylor Swift had a bigger year in 2023 than any of them combined, frankly; coming out as queer wouldn't slow her down in the slightest. why the fuck are gaylors so determined to act like she's beholden to a fanbase comprised entirely of conservatives?
also everything about how coming out is sooooo hard for famous people because they're subject to scrutiny and weird behavior as if that's not? something Taylor Swift already deals with? hello hi? get a grip I implore you. why are we wasting webspace on this.

Let the record show that in April of 2024 the Gaylors knew that Taylor Swift was going to retire the pop sensation story book fantasy and would go on to rock the entire entertainment industry because she truly is that queer b*tch.

Alright, hot take:
I don’t know what the intention of these articles were. As always, Gaylors are caught in the crossfire of PR and Swifties.
I don’t know if it was part of the plan to start the conversation or if the op-ed was released unknowingly and it’s going against the grain of Taylor’s plan so they had to pivot.
But I do not believe she is going to say anything else about it.
I’ll say this: I believe that IF she is coming out, she is NOT coming out until 2025.
You want to know the main reason? It’s always the same damn reason that ruins everything in this country: It’s an election year. And we still somehow live in a psychotic world where Trump is probably on the ballot.
Taylor Swift coming out in 2024 would KILL the Democratic chances. Taylor Swift is HUGE click bait. Far right news outlets would immediately pull the gay agenda card.
“This woman convinced your children to love her, threw a massive tour to brainwash and mobilize them into thinking it’s okay to be queer. The gays have an agenda and they are harming your children!”
It would be a massacre to the blue.
The Eras tour conveniently comes to a close right as 2024 ends.
My theory is they are planting seeds for post-tour. But also post-election AND post-inauguration (after what happened on Jan 6).
It’s a messy world we live in. But I also can’t help but think there may be more to the mass coming out theory. I keep coming back to this from the NYT article and the 🎃 anon to @spade-riddles :
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The “glass overflowing” seems to me like a reference to the “glass closet” and maybe she really is leading the revolution of queer celebrities coming out together.
If a ton of them come out, then A LOT of media would have to be boycotted by the right to prove a point. Essentially, I think the majority of those neutral wouldn’t give up entertainment in support of that fight.
Anyway, could be totally wrong. But if I’m right, buckle in, kiddos. It’s going to be a long ride. But 🫚 anon did say to watch for the small things and not focus on the big reveal… probably because it’s going to be a while, if it does happen.

my biggest hope for 2024 is that taylor swift makes a statement on gaylors with an obvious, unobstructed tone of deep disgust and i hope that disgust can't be read in any other way. i hope it's completely and utterly impossible for even the most delusional of blonde bisexual tiktok addicts to understand her comments as anything but condemnation. i hope she sounds like when ed helms found out about what they did to the once-ler. and most of all i hope that in that moment, all the people who banked everything on the straightest woman in history being some kind of secret queer look inward and realize that not only are they the belligerent, lobotomized jesters of the pop culture zeitgeist, clad finely in the most ridiculous, preposterous, parasocial relationship clown makeup, but also, most importantly, her music just isn't very good.

Gaylor Swift has gone mainstream...into the New York Times...
yeah and someone "closely associated" with Swift has already come out to denounce it and the Gaylor subreddits are losing it

Cam I have to say, as a Kaylor favoring Gaylor I disagree with you on a lot but I was blown away (in a good way!) by your most recent podcast episode. That episode was so well done and so validating for ALL Gaylors, not just the ones you agree with. Thank you for doing what you do.
well i'm so glad you enjoyed it! we can disagree sometimes and still come together to make good points!
here are links for anyone else who wants to listen in!

TLDR; speculation on probable Taylor Swift fallout based on 8 year pattern AKA worldwide kickoff of taylor swift's carrer in 2008 with release of debut album, 8 years later falls out of grace thanks to kim and kanye lying, then releases reputation, 8 years later may be on the brink of another fallout to give way to another reinvention era/album
i think i just realized something, i think Taylor Swift might be very close to a worldwide fallout, falling out of the high pedestal she's been on lately. and this is based solely on a pattern i saw, which is:
all fine > 8 years > worldwide fallout > "reset" image, fine again > 8 years > worldwide fallout > "reset" image
allow me to explain.
(forgive me if someone has already said this before, i just haven't seen anything)
so, to establish a timeline.
if we consider The Start of Taylor Swift's professional (to any extent of the word) career as the release of Taylor Swift (the debut album), then it all starts in 2008 (technically the internet says "it was released in North America on October 24, 2006, and elsewhere on March 18, 2008". still the year i remember is 2008, and it was the release date for the world so to say, and honestly, USA is not the only country ever so whatever).
then 8 years later, let's set the scene. it's 2016, Kanye releases Famous, the Taylor line, the music video, the edited phone call video. boom, seems the whole world turns HARD against Taylor (she's gotten hate all the time, but now it seems to be EVERYONE, your mom, her dog, the neighbor, and their aunt Martha, even people who "don't care" about Taylor Swift are swayed to form negative opinions on her, most of them taking to social media for everyone to see).
one year later, 2017, we get reputation. i take this as the beginning of gaining back the trust? the grace? the ykwim of the world. 2020, the real full phone call leaks online, this accelerates the process.
8 years later from the fallout (2016), 2024. here is where we get to speculating grounds, about what i think can happen next based off the 8 year pattern i saw:
2024 is the year people lose faith on Taylor Swift, you can even say the world will turn on her again, it's the cycle of things and in her case it appears to be every 8 years.
you can even say the cogs started moving in 2023, with the whole jet emissions, lack of being vocal about things people see as important, problematic fling with ratty, overdoing the whole merch and consumerism "spend more and more on me and my stuff" thing, borderline estranging and seemingly throwing part of her fan base under the bus (gaylors with the 1989 prologue), allegedly starting a PR relationship with the NFL (spotlight with misogynistic men, generates hate), etc.
she's getting too much media exposure, people who didn't care for her, start not liking her (she's everywhere, it's tiring), people who simply didn't like her now start hating her (no more tolerance), people who hated her, hate her even more and are making it everybody's problem. some people who like or love her, given the radical change of focus in her appearances lately (NFL, new boy, WAGS besties, republican america fuck yeah vibes, as opposed to focus in her art, music, lyrics, thoughts, etc.) may even start not caring about her or disliking her.
so, i think what comes next is a fallout. still, i think that what makes it different this time is that now she has control of the narrative. maybe this time it's planned. i don't think it's a coincidence the two left re-records are Taylor Swift debut album (which started it all, started the cycle) and reputation (the tool for image reset, for changing general opinion on her).
i don't know what the order will be, maybe:
release TS TV, then full blown fallout, "disappears" from public eye (hard given the eras tour is still on), comes back a year later with rep TV and new image
release TS TV, continue slow fallout, rep TV and finish eras tour (closing circles), extreme media exposure that tips the glass, full blown fallout, disappears, comes back a year later with a new album that changes public perception about her rep style
what may this new image be? idk maybe:
a traditional, "actually i'm straight and lowkey homophobic", "i was lying about not wanting to get married", getting married, forming a family, retiring to focus on new family, we see nothing of her ever again
or a controversial, "actually i AM gay and tired of hiding it" or something like that
literally anything else, idk

also like, if i was a creepy kaylor, it would literally feel like gaslighting to pick up on taylor being unhappy with joe, to pick up on the cheating themes in folkmore, to pick up on her alcoholism and be shamed for it, only to then have taylor break up with the boyfriend she seemed unhappy with and admit to cheating on him emotionally with ratty and confirm she is an alcoholic in an album not even 4 years later???? like, if i was this type of fan, i would get even more conspiracy theorist about kaylor than i already am because like.... i was right??? i was right about so much???????????? im on a fucking winning streak and you want me to admit defeat when im so close to being right about kaylor still being a thing in 2024???????
idk yall i find it very interesting the way some of the anti-gaylors have reacted to this album because its like you guys have amnesia all of a sudden about how much the gaylors got correct about taylor's personal life in the past 6 years. like, idk, i think some of you should think about why you react so negatively to someone like taylor swift being part of the queer community????
it's very interesting to me how much yall are trying to forget about the gaylor theories in light of this new album honestly. its like a real life example in spotting biphobia in the queer community.

Submission: About May 13th
Peeps, I’m blown away!! This all feels a bit surreal but here we are!
The May 13th date and “renewal” or end of contract or whatever it is … where is Taylor went that will happen this year? I’m have goosebumps, I’m telling you!
Do we know if she will be going to the MET Gala this year? It takes place on Monday May 6th. This year theme is - hold on to your hats - “Sleeping Beauties - Reawakening Fashion”.
Normally I would say, she has to go. It takes place in New York City too.
BUT Taylor will be in …. PARIS!!!!
Starting Thursday May 9th Taylor will play four concerts in the Paris La Défense Arena. Last concert is Sunday May 12th.
Monday 13th 2024 she has a day off in PARIS!!!!
Next concert is Friday 17th in Stockholm.
Let me also add … I wrote in about Clara Bow. I’m a massive silent movie fan. My other obsession is genealogy and I cannot tell you how many times I facepalmed that I didn’t catch the Gaylor grandparents of Clara Bow.
Now if you look at the song Clara Bow by Taylor, it starts with
“You look like Clara Bow
In this light, remarkable
All your life, did you know
You’d be picked like a rose?”
and ends with
“You look like Taylor Swift
In this light, we’re lovin’ it
You’ve got edge, she never did
The future’s bright, dazzling”
Taylor making Clara Bow her “grandmother” by giving this a direct descendant line … I have shivers down my spine …
