#these were hard! Just passing through Central on my way home. Reminiscing on countless amazing nights in the Festival Club at Central Hotel, Glasgow. i have noticed that when i listen to tri yann songs i tend to process them a lot more visually than songs from other artists. in some cases (many tracks from abysses, 2008), this feels like it is because i have been listening to them for a very long time, but i only recently actually listened all the way through to le pélégrin (2001) and several of the songs (“l’ULM merveilleux” and “de nivôse en frimaire” most particularly) immediately and solidly established a visual language for themselves in my head (disconnected from the actual text of the song). the shortest way to describe it is probably that they immediately make me construct an amv in my head—and specifically amv, visualizing specific artstyles. i don’t think this is a french-language-specific thing, as this doesn’t happen with, e.g., genticorum, le vent du nord, or galant tu perds ton temps. i think with the latter artists i respond more to sonority—podorythmie, instrumentation, repetition of words-as-sound or of musical phrases—while with tri yann i respond more to the words themselves. however, i still don’t tend to experience this kind of sustained visual response to english-language music (as opposed to the visual power of a specific phrase), irrespective of the power of the response tout court it may or may not evoke.

2) Lipstick or chapstick: usually I wear neither, however if I dress up there’s nothing like the classic red lipstick + men’s suit combo

3) Three favourite foods: hmmm it changes but for now let’s say udon, jaffa cakes, and anything with a good pesto + mozzarella + tomato combination

5) Last movie you watched: Colette which was fun, the lgbt society put it on 

6) Top three shows: The Terror for sure, possibly The Twilight Zone, aaand probably Star Trek because it’s been so important to me in the past

7) Books I’m currently reading: too many haha. For uni I’m in the middle of Livy and Caesar, on my own time I’m partway through Winter’s Tale by Mark Helprin, Emily Wilson’s Odyssey translation, and Two Years Before the Mast by RH Dana. I have my eye on my library’s copies of Cicero’s letters to Atticus though. 

8) Last thing I googled: “hagia sophia norse runes” because I love graffiti and that one’s a fav

9) Time: 23:11

10) Dream trip: I’d really like to go to Ostia Antica or Delphi. oh and to go back to Santorini to see the Theran stuff I missed when I was younger!! 

11) Anything you want? not to be lonely and touchstarved on main but a little tenderness would go a long way. some hugs and close friends I can talk to, a little love in my life.
