Song to the Stormlord
Often sung during harsh storms to keep up morale below decks, or while working in the storm as a way to keep auditory connection with the rest of the crew in dangerous, low visibility conditions. The first verse is sometimes sung in canon, sometimes as call and response; and the second verse is always a call and response between the starting singer and everyone else. No one knows the exact origin, but its prevalence as a song to weather storms and its focus on the bonds between shipmates points to its possible emergence as a prayer to the Stormlord during dire straights.
Rolling thunder, sparks on the water Wind to tear apart our sails Guide us through to calmer harbors Keep us safe to tell your tales Sing with me, brothers Oh, my brothers Sing with me sisters Oh, my sisters Sing for the captain Hail our captain Sing with me mateys Oh, my friends

If you don't mind, could you do headcanons for Captain Hook with an s/o who doesn't know how to dance/feels awkward and self concious in their own body when trying to do so? And how he would go about teaching them how to dance? I think it would be adorable ♡
Oh hey Anon, wondering if I somehow astral projected and posessed you to write this because hoo boy I am NOT comfy with the whole dancing thing. Good thing Hooks a genuine gent eh?
Hook x S/O-Who-Can't-Dance Headcannons:
So it's not that he likes feeling superior...
...it's just that he loves getting to show off his gentleman persona, and there's not much more genteel getting to teach you the intricacies of the ballroom!
Given he's the only one who can play any sort of dancable music (the shanties and ragtag band of the crew don't count, apparently) I'm going to say he yoinked a gramophone and some records from London when he stole Wendy's daughter.
Don't picture the Jolly Rodger getting a parking ticket above Covent Garden while he goes record shopping with a pistol, ok? Just don't.
Everyone feels awkward when they start, don't worry. It's a confidence thing and a 'knowing where your limbs go' thing. Once you know the steps the confidence comes on it's own! And if you stumble, well, that's why he's got a hold of you, isn't it~?
Yeah now that he has an excuse to hold you to close him he's not letting go. He'll pull away, show you how to move your feet and where to place your arms, but there will always be fingers gently on your wrist, shoulder or lower back. He's addicted. If his remaining hand can't reach you, the back of the (blunted) hook will rest there instead.
The lessons take place in his cabin, at your request.
You're not comfortable having the crew watch while you learn -it's mortifying enough learning as is! James completely agrees, yes dear, of course! More time spent with you alone? Say no more! Smee is in charge now!
But once you're confident in your new skills (and how could you not be, with such a wonderful teacher?) he would absolutely love you both to strut your stuff on deck!!
Some of the dances take up too much space for his cabin and the deck. Consider it a graduating ceremony, a final test and date in one if you will, for you both to row out of an evening and dance on the golden shores of Neverland. The stars sparkle above, the waves sparkle below, and the fireflies and fairy lights are your delicate entourage as you twirl the time away in eachothers arms. Content.

OK folks, so here I am with a goal this year. Instead of doing the Inktober, I decided to spice up the game a bit and play with the unrepresentable. I am so bad at drawing first of all, and Moby-Dick just always plays with representable/unknown/unrepresentable.
So this is a challenge and expect it to be more fun than serious. The serious part of my work is clearly elsewhere (and it is about research, not me drawing).
MELVILLEANKTOBER 2023
This is the first Melvillieanktober ever (I got the idea at the end of September). The ideas behind the prompts are:
Find words relative to Moby-Dick, anything, especially proper nouns.
Find sentences that have common elements with the novel. Mix them.
Add CATS. CATS EVERYWHERE. Expect LOTS OF CATS. Mix everything.
Basically, it is: Moby-Dick, with cats, and kind of something else around. Ladies and gents and other folks, this is the Melvilleanktober.
Here are the prompts:
"The mighty whale breaches the surface, watched by curious cats." & Whale
"The determined captain sets sail, accompanied by his loyal feline friend." & Captain
"The harpoon gleams in the moonlight, casting a glow on the cat's inquisitive eyes." & Harpoon
"The ship battles treacherous waves, with a brave cat perched on the mast." & Ahab
"Sailors navigate the vast sea, while their ship's cat keeps watch." & Pequod
"A storm brews on the horizon, and cats seek shelter below deck." & Sailing
"Adventures await beyond the horizon, as cats explore the unknown." & Sea
"Obsession drives a man to madness, witnessed by his concerned cat." & Ishmael
"Seeking vengeance on the open ocean, a cat's curiosity leads the way." & Leviathan
"The crew toils tirelessly, cheered on by the ship's playful cats." & Nantucket
"In pursuit of the elusive prey, a cat's instincts sharpen." & Starbuck
"Thunder rumbles in the distance, and cats huddle close for comfort." & Queequeg
"Lost in the endless blue expanse, cats find solace in each other's company." & Whaling
"Guided by the stars above, cats navigate by celestial light." & Storm
"Courage in the face of danger, as cats stand by their human companions." & Ahoy
"A mysterious creature lurks below, captivating the ship's cats." & Ship
"The journey's end remains uncertain, but cats offer silent support." & Moby Dick
"In search of the legendary white beast, cats keep watch from the crow's nest." & White Whale
"The hunt begins at dawn, with cats as vigilant observers." & Captain's Log
"Embarking on a perilous quest, cats are part of the fearless crew." & Tattoo
"Ink etches tales of the deep, where cats play their own role." & Captain's Quarters
"Perilous encounters on the voyage, with cats as agile allies." & Whalebone
"Isolation on the boundless sea, but cats provide companionship." & Sea Shanty
"Survival against all odds, with cats sharing their warmth." & Kraken
"Nature's beauty and fury, observed through a cat's curious eyes." & Whale Oil
"Legacy of the whaling industry, cats as symbols of maritime life." & Sperm Whale
"Discovery in uncharted waters, cats explore new territories." & Whale Song
"Tragedy strikes the crew, and cats offer comfort in grief." & Nautical
"Loyalty binds the sailors, and cats are cherished shipmates." & Ship's Wheel
"Wisdom passed down through generations, including the wisdom of cats." & Scrimshaw
"Victory over the forces of nature, celebrated with the ship's feline crew." & Nantucket Island
Yes, this is un-doable, especially with my poor drawing skills. It will be fun for sure.
Yes, I'm late for the Inktobers. Who cares?

Wednesday 24th April 2024
Our hotel was still asleep as we fumbled our way out of unfamiliar locked doors. The cases rumbled noisily past the swimming pool and the security guard mysteriously appeared out of the darkness, grabbed a suitcase and thrust a couple of ham bagels in a carrier bag our way. By way of saying goodbye he operated the big security gate to allow us to drive out into the night. It was still stupid o'clock as we drove the empty streets the 3kms or so to the airport passing a shantie town with yesterday's fires still burning and on to the Avis drop off point. Now pedestrians again we made the short walk into departures. They were relatively pleasant at this time of the morning. The check-in man almost smiled but I think it was wind. I had a conversation with the man at the scanner. Well it was a bit like talking to Sooty; I could see his lips move but I couldn't actually hear anything. Turns out when he virtually whispered in my ear he was enquiring where we were off to and wished us a pleasant journey!! Man in the airport!!! Never come across anyone pleasant before! I squeeked back in 'Sweep' that we from England and on our way to Kasane. He nodded.
We were flying on a small Embraer E195 jet aircraft. A visually impaired lady two rows in front of us had a Labrador guide dog under the seat. Thankfully the man in front didn't need to reach under the seat for his life jacket. He might have got a big lick.
Johannesburg airport was another challenge. Moving from domestic arrivals to international departures was fun. Scanning again the same bags brought through Port Elizabeth certain items were now deemed unacceptable and yet another Sooty whispered that I shouldn't have something in my bag but I had no Idea what the contraband was. He whispered confidentially that on this occasion he would turn a blind eye but don't tell the lady over there. We searched through the bag later a discovered a couple of oranges that the hotel had slipped in. No idea if that's what the fuss was about. Then an official porter kindly showed us how to negotiate the endless corridors. When nicely positioned for correct departures he started muttering about a tip, as did the man in the Gents.
Our flight to Kasane was on an even smaller plane, an Embraer E135/140. If we had to do another flight we'd all be sitting with the pilot!
Happily after having the passports checked by two sets of people we collected our hold luggage (remarkably arrived despite the transfer) and we were met by a very nice lady from the Chobe Game Lodge. We were joined by two ladies from Philadelphia, piling into the back of a Toyota Landcruiser and driven the 40 minute journey to the Game Reserve. We were then shown to our lodge but there's an itinerary here don't you know and we were supposed to have afternoon tea and then present ourselves for the three hour cruise looking for wildlife. No time for everything, so we missed the tea and dashed down to the waiting boats bobbing by the quayside of the Chobe River. Ours is the Botswana bank whilst the opposite bank is Namibia.
The bar was free as were the nibbles and the animals we were able to see. The great thing about water is that sooner or later all animals come down to it. We witnessed bathing elephants, hippos, crocodiles, monkeys, giraffes and an African Fish Eagle along with herons and egrets. A truly superb setting and collection of animals on our first visit, made all the more perfect by a magnificent sunset. A great end to a day where temperatures peaked at 35°C.

12, 23, 24 for the history ask?
12. Would you take part in reenactment? In what era and as whom?
I technically already do! I do a Napoleonic light infantry. Not as any actual historical figure but I do get to keep making up the most ludicrous and wild backstory whenever I talk to the public. If I wasn’t doing this, I’d want to do Napoleonic naval (there’s literally no one I’d be suited to be) or Edwardian/WWI (again — no one specifically I could possibly pull off). Honestly, I’d love to do English civil war or Saxons because SWORDS (and no gunpowder license!). Anything with swords.
23. Favourite historical song with such reference?
I do have a few? Northwest Passage will always be a banger. Horse Soldier as well. There’s also one that was written by one of the gents in my re-enactment regiment and a sea shanty group recorded it. It’s about an actual person who was in the regiment and well, he died. It’s a ballad about him, The Ballad of Phillip Glass. It only exists on CD, nobody’s digitised it rip 13 Miles is also another one written about a specific event no one really knows about! Also, The Handsome Cabin Boy. Battlefield Dance Floor is also a BANGER. 10/10 recommend.
24. Most underrated historical figure?
Hannah Snell, lady tar. I wrote a stage play based on her! But also John Paynter. I’m honestly kicking myself because I know in two hours I’ll remember so-an-so and wish I’d remembered sooner lol

THE old pubs of Queensland were recalled by William Lees in an entertaining feature story published in ‘The Queenslander’ newspaper on September 5 1935. In his story, he tells of the shanties and inns of outback Queensland and the legendary hotels of Brisbane, their dubious reputations, and the even more dubious liquor. Lees reveals how customers in the 1840s often would refuse to drink from unlabelled bottles because it indicated that the home-made brews contained “sulphuric acid, painkiller, bluestone, spirits of salts, and sauce”, which burnt the labels off! He explained how one ex-publican was financially ruined when he dropped a bottle of home brew on to the bar-room floor. It smashed to pieces and burnt his uninsured pub to the ground! ITB STIKOM Bali Ajak Ratusan Karyawannya Tour Dua Negara
Tumblr media

The Ballad of the Ghor Dranas
It was originally written as a drunken bet that Glint couldn’t make up a song with everyone in it, which they immediately did on the spot, and now it exists mainly as a gag among the crew more than anything else. The crew of the Ghor Dranas sometimes sing this song in port (omitting the final verses) to build up their reputation and scare off other sailors from interacting with them. It hasn’t really taken off as a staple shanty, though a handful of sailors might remember hearing it at some point.
Full 11 verses included under the cut
Chorus: The dread ship Ghor Dranas Like a ghost she sails the sea She can’t be found, she won’t go down But she plunders in infamy
Solo / all
1. I’ve sailed the sea for many years, my lads, and so they say There is a ship so fearful even the best do run away Her sails seem white but then turn black, figurehead poised to attack If you see shadows fill her deck, you won’t live another day Chorus: The dread ship Ghor Dranas Like a ghost she sails the sea She can’t be found, she won’t go down But she plunders in infamy 2. (Verse for Aaliyah, halfling rogue/sea monster hunter ranger, lookout) Up waiting in the crow’s nest is a lass so strong and small Her eyes search like a hawk and when she spots you she will call It’s not her sight you need to fear, but rather the blades that she keeps near For when she picks her targets, oh, you know she hits ‘em all The dread ship Ghor Dranas Like a ghost she sails the sea She can’t be found, she won’t go down But she plunders in infamy 3. (Verse for Eweyn, merfolk/elf druid, botswain’s mate) There’s a deckhand there who at first glance may seem so soft and sweet But underneath the satin dress and hair all seaweed green There lies a force like nothing else, and at her words the waves will swell She’ll call the waters up to drag you down into the deep The dread ship Ghor Dranas Like a ghost she sails the sea She can’t be found, she won’t go down But she plunders in infamy 4. (Verse for Hale, half elf oathbroken paladin, carpenter) Working on the deck he keeps the ship a-lookin' swell Beneath the tight-shut lips lie many secrets he'll never tell Hammers are tools his of trade, he just as good holdin' a blade Though he's sworn to gods above, he'll send your rotten soul to hell The dread ship Ghor Dranas Like a ghost she sails the sea She can’t be found, she won’t go down But she plunders in infamy 5. (Verse for Sydreth, dragonborn warlock, cannon master) Hulking in the belly is the fearsome cannon master If he sets his sights on you, well, it’s sure to spell disaster Scales as gold as the coins he takes, his voice so loud you’ll start to shake Never mind the guns, my boys, his (fire) breath’ll get ya faster The dread ship Ghor Dranas Like a ghost she sails the sea She can’t be found, she won’t go down But she plunders in infamy 6. (Verse for Bormir, dwarf runechild sorcerer, retired first mate/cook) A’stirring in the galley is the magic slingin’ cook He’ll make a stew then cast a spell that leaves you feeling shook The power dances on his skin, the purple markings faded in A older sailor yet with strength  to string ya on the hook The dread ship Ghor Dranas Like a ghost she sails the sea She can’t be found, she won’t go down But she plunders in infamy 7. (Verse for Gent, tiefling fighter/wizard, navigator) Upon the deck, a strapping lad, a compass in his hand And under his true guidance there’s no storm the ship won’t stand Although he has skill with a blade, he’ll craft a spell like a master mage And with a mind so cunning there’s no telling what he has planned The dread ship Ghor Dranas Like a ghost she sails the sea She can’t be found, she won’t go down But she plunders in infamy 8. (Verse for Myra, human tempest cleric, first mate) Standing at the bow, first mate with hair so firey red You’ll see her from afar and then your heart will fill with dread She bends the thunder to her will, in drowning you she’ll find a thrill Attend her every word or else she’ll have your fuckin’ head The dread ship Ghor Dranas Like a ghost she sails the sea She can’t be found, she won’t go down But she plunders in infamy 9. (Verse for Crystal, human wizard, captain) And leading every one of them, a fearsome Captain true To get what she desires there’s no telling what she will do Wisdom like an elder sage, and magic like a wicked mage If you even think to cross her, a sword will run you through The dread ship Ghor Dranas Like a ghost she sails the sea She can’t be found, she won’t go down But she plunders in infamy 10. (Verse for Glint, gnome bard, botswain) So now you know the tale of pirates who know no defeat Even up in Darktow, they run the whole damn fleet You want to avoid a tale of woe? Remember the bard who warned you so The Ghor Dranas is a fate no sailor ever wants to meet The dread ship Ghor Dranas Like a ghost she sails the sea She can’t be found, she won’t go down But she plunders in infamy 11. We’ve sailed the sea for many years, my friends, and so they say We crew a ship so fearful even the best do run away Our sails are white, we turn ‘em black, before we ready our attack And as the shadows fill our deck, you’d best begin to pray The good ship Ghor Dranas Like a ghost we sail the sea We can’t be found, we don’t go down And we plunder in infamy Forevermore (Forevermore!) ‘Til our bodies wash ashore (Wash ashore!) We plunder in infamy

Lyrics:
There once was a ship that put to sea The name of the ship was the Billy of Tea The winds blew up, her bow dipped down O blow, my bully boys, blow
Soon may the Wellerman come To bring us sugar and tea and rum One day, when the tonguin' is done We'll take our leave and go
She had not been two weeks from shore When down on her a right whale bore The captain called all hands and swore He'd take that whale in tow
Soon may the Wellerman come To bring us sugar and tea and rum One day, when the tonguin' is done We'll take our leave and go
Before the boat had hit the water The whale's tail came up and caught her All hands to the side, harpooned and fought her When she dived down below
Soon may the Wellerman come To bring us sugar and tea and rum One day, when the tonguin' is done We'll take our leave and go And there are actually more verses here:
