During the 1972-73 season, these two were teammates with the Virginia Squires. Julius Erving went to the New York Nets the following year and George Gervin landed in San Antonio not long after. From there, they each became superstars in the ABA and ultimately the NBA.
They defined cool, style and gracefulness on and off the court.
“Dr. J and the Iceman”…
Competitors. Rivals. Friends. Legends.

This set features 16 of the best NBA teams from the 70s decade.
79-80 Phoenix Suns: Phoenix achieved a franchise-best 55-27 record. Paul Westphal led the team in scoring, earning All-NBA First Team honors. Swingman and fellow All-star Walter Davis, along with Don Buse, Truck Robinson, and Alvin Adams provided key contributions to the team’s success.
71-72 Chicago: The Bulls finished a then-franchise best 57-25, behind a rugged defense led by Jerry Sloan and Norm Van Lier. The duo Chet Walker and Bob Love provided the scoring punch.
76-77 Denver: In Denver’s first year in the NBA, after merging from the ABA, the Nuggets won 50 games behind NBA All-Defense forward Bobby Jones and All-NBA guard David Thompson.
75-76 Cleveland: This historically significant season marked the Cavs’ first-ever winning record, their debut in the playoffs, and their advancement to the conference finals. Dubbed the “Miracle at Richfield,” this exceptional season prompted an overwhelming show of support from fans. Cleveland utilized a well-balanced attack, featuring seven players who averaged double digit scoring per game.
74-75 Buffalo: The Braves boasted a record of 49–33, which would endure for 37 years as the franchise’s winningest season. Bob McAdoo’s led the league in scoring with 34.5 points per game, earning him the MVP Award.
78-79 San Antonio: All NBA first teamer George “The Iceman” Gervin led the league in scoring and helped propel the team to a first-place finish in the NBA’s Central Division. The Spurs eventually bowed out of the playoffs, losing in the Eastern Conference Finals.
75-76 Golden State: This Warrior team won a then franchise best 59 games, a record that would not be surpassed for nearly 40 years. All- NBA selections Rick Barry and Phil Smith provided firepower and tenacity at both ends of the court.
79-80 Atlanta: The Hawks, coached by Hubie Brown, finished the NBA regular season in 1st place in the Eastern Conference Central Division with a 50-32 record, behind an impressive defense. Dan Roundfield was named to the All-NBA Second Team and all NBA-Defensive First Team, while guard Eddie Johnson was named to the NBA-Defensive Second Team.
79-80 Philadelphia: The 76’ers won 59 regular season games and advanced to the NBA finals. NBA legend Julius Erving, “Dr. J,” provided efficient scoring and dazzling athleticism as displayed in his famous baseline scoop move during the finals: Dr. J Baseline Scoop. All-NBA Defensive First Teamer Bobby Jones, along with Caldwell Jones and Maurice Cheeks, led a stout defense, ranked number one in the league.
74-75 Washington: In the inaugural year after changing the franchise name from the Capital Bullets to the Washington Bullets, Washington posted a franchise best record of 60–22 and won the Eastern Conference finals. This team featured All NBA selections Elvin Hayes and Phil Chenier, and the league’s best defense.
77-78 Portland: The Blazers started the season with a blistering 50-10 record, before a season-ending injury to league MVP, Bill Walton. Though Portland faltered the rest of the way, including the post-season, a healthy Walton instantly transforms this squad into one of the more formidable teams included in this set. Other key Blazers included Maurice Lucas, named to both the All-NBA and All-NBA defensive teams, and All-NBA Defensive selections Bob Gross and Lionel Hollins.
78-79 Seattle: The Supersonics avenged their previous year’s NBA Finals loss by defeating Washington in five games, winning their first and only NBA championship. Dennis Johnson was named the NBA Finals MVP and named to the NBA ALL-Defensive First Team. Other notable players on this defensive-minded squad included Gus Williams and Jack Sikma.
72-73 New York: The Knicks captured their second, and last (to date) NBA Championship, behind the play of a deep squad, including several Hall-of Famers: Walt Frazier, Earl “The Pearl” Monroe, Dave DeBusschere, Willis Reed, and Bill Bradley.
72-73 Boston: The Celtics finished with a franchise record 68 wins, behind the play of league MVP Dave Cowens and First Team All-NBA selection John Havlicek. All-NBA defenders Paul Silas and Don Chaney, along with Cowens and Havlicek, led the top-ranked Celtics defense.
71-72 Los Angeles: This Laker team is widely regarded as one of the best all-time teams, finishing the regular season with a 69-13 record and capturing the NBA championship. The team’s 69 wins was an all- time record that would last for 25 years. The teams’ performance included a 33-game win streak, which still stands as all-time best. The 71-72 roster features NBA greats Wilt Chamberlain and Jerry West.
70-71 Milwaukee: League and Playoff MVP Kareem Abdul-Jabbar led the Bucks to a 66-16 regular season record and the franchise’s first NBA championship. Though a bit beyond his prime, Hall-of-Famer Oscar Robertson led the team in assists, and was second only to Abdul-Jabbar in minutes played and points. The Bucks won 20 straight games, good for fifth all-time.
