ok I'm rereading the Scholomance trilogy by Naomi Novik and I'm at the part in the second book where Orion says, "Even my mom and dad, they always thought something was wrong with me....they always thought I was weird."
And I'm like. Can you imagine being a woman who gave herself a pseudo-abortion to create a child who was a ghastly, already-dead, always-hungry monster and then incubating him in your womb and raising him like a Normal Boy™ and then being like, "It's really weird that this nuclear weapon I made and impregnated myself with shows no interest in anything other than being a nuclear weapon. I should make him feel guilty about his lack of interest in this XBox I bought him."

I finished the Scholomance series and I am absolutely convinced that I understand it better than literally anyone else. This is directly related to my recent trip down Transformers fanfiction.

I finished the Scholomance trilogy (in case it wasn't obvious by the surplus of reblogs last week) and this is what I learned, writing wise:
Long messy sentances that convey like 10 things at the same time do work sometimes (especially for 1st person, and when there is a lot going on, either action or emotions wise) and I should not be editing them all out like weeds
Overpowered characters are done really well here, both El and Orion, because by the time you figure they really are overpowered, the conflict doesn't come from whether they will manage to kill the monsters or not, but from the more complex ethical implications
No main villain also works, since the real enemy was classism and shifting blame all along
Casual sex scenes, queer relationships and drug use won't doom my books aimed at a young audience (call me a coward but this is one of my main concerns regarding marketing soarers)
I still don't like overusing italics lol

Golden Enclaves/scholomance spoilers
Speaking of Ibrahim and Yaakov. When El asks how Yaakovs doing and its obviously extremely painful to Ibrahim because they cant safely live together. The Dubai enclave opening up to anyone with the mana to help immediately. Waiting waiting waiting and then Yaakov is there, and he brought his slow-moving older relatives and theyre last in and El starts faffing around with chalk to give them time and then theyre there and theyre hugging and they made it and they can live here together now and be safe and be in love and Ibrahim hadnt even known if he'd got the text yet I absolutely bawled my eyes out.
And when Yaakov ran out the scholomance wearing his worn tallit 😭😭😭
There are so few good Jewish characters in general, and he's queer and he gets his happy ending with his "supposed to be his enemy" lover the both of them and they mean so so so much to me!!

writing this fanfic has me thinking about names in Scholomance- (general disclaimer that this isn't thoroughly researched) --
Orion is obvious - the mythical hunter
Ophelia is an interesting one. The obvious association is Hamlet's Ophelia, her tragic death in the face of cruelty of men. You could see Scholomance Ophelia as facing down the cruelty of the world, of carefully cutting away her own innocence and goodness, to become the Maleficer we know. That feels like a stretch to me. I've been doing some googling and Ophelia was used in Jacopo Sannazaro's poem "Arcadia" in the 15th century; I cannot find much info about this (without extensive research that I am simply not willing to do for this post) -- other than that apparently Ophelia comes from a Greek word meaning "help/benefit," which Scholomance Ophelia certainly justifies herself as doing. it feels like an ironic name to me?
Balthazar is the name the king who brought myrrh to the Baby Jesus -- foreseeing His death. I think this is cool in that Orion has been dead since he was a baby. ; Balthazar is also apparently a variant spelling of the king in Daniel and the name means "bel protects the king" - referring to the pagan gods of Babylon - you could argue Orion's birth as both mythical and god-like, that his birth was meant to protect the Enclave, including his parents -
They are also all some type of noble (Orion's birth varies in myth but usually has a god or noble origin; Ophelia in Hamlet is a noble, Balthazar is a king) .
anyway i don't have a point, I'm procrastinating actually writing, but I think it's neat

sorta spoiler for scholomance but i finished the scholomance trilogy(?) today and ughhhh it nearly filled the void harry potter had given me. i loved it. where is scholomance tumblr i need it immediately i'm so conflicted by el x orion & el x liesel cuz orion is cute but i wasn't attached to him as much as the first two books. liesel and el surprised me, confused me (cuz el was literally like dreaming abt orion within hours), and made me so happy because yay casual bi/pan characters!
anyways i rly liked it

The thing with the Scholomance trilogy, is that I would absolutely also read a fourth book of short stories from the pov of secondary and tertiary chars about their lives. It can be that they don't even mention El or Orion or any of the others main-ish shaneaningans and I still would be fascinated because the characters and this world fascinate me so much.
I would love to have a short story about Liu and/or Aadhya. Or Alphie and Liesel in London, or Chloe in New York or the older students who graduated the year before TLG. From someone from El's family in India (it was Mumbay right?), one of the kids who followed El around in TLG in the new Scholomance, or Li Shenfeng from Beijing or Ophelia or any of those adults lives from one of the enclaves. From Nkoyo, from Zixuan and Yuyan, from Sudarat. A random person at the hall in Beijing who helped with the Golden Enclaves spell, or in Dubai. from Yaakov.
Some Orion's Pov on his life after Golden Enclaves because I've always been fascinated by his chara and how his ausences from the text say so much about him by way of implication.
Some El's PoV on how she starts healing after Golden Enclaves and how she finds herself enjoying being alive and traveling around the world with her friends, and occasionally saving someone in her aggravated "why this is always happening way" bc she may tell herself she's only hunting maw-mouths but she always finds herself trouble xD
All the little tidbits that suggest a wonderfully extense world hidden behind our El's limited pov could be expanded upon. Just for the delight of it doesn't have to have a larger plot behind (although I wouldn't sya no to it lol).
Ah!!!! I just love it so much.

Spoilers for all of ‘The Golden Enclaves’. I’m rambling about everything I loved about this book.
The scene where El is confronting the mawmouth in the London Enclave, and she terrified and psyching her self up to face it, and then it runs away and she immediately starts chasing it. Like a cat, oh it’s running? I’m going to chase it.
I know I saw some people complaining about the Leisel/El scenes, but they worked for me. Sex doesn’t always have to be a committed romantic relationship, sometimes it’s just a way to connect with someone and have a good time. I thought it fit both of their characters.
Speaking of Leisel, I loved her character arc of ‘Great, we escaped the school and improved the world, now I’m well set up to start my getting my revenge - Nope, have to deal with a mawmouth first. OK, now I need to make sure El stays alive and sane. Oh, we didn’t fix things as much as I thought. Wait, THAT’S how Enclaves are made?! Ugh, fine, I guess fixing things is more important than revenge.’
The scene after El pulls down the wall in Beijing and figures out exactly how mawmouths are made. It such a great moment of ‘I never saw that coming.’ & ‘Yep, makes perfect sense.’ Then the realizing El hadn’t made the link to ‘When I destroy mawmouths, that’s when destroying Enclaves.’ The whole sequence of El impulsively taking off for Mumbai, and traveling the way her Mum would, and finding the mawmouth, and finding out the truth about the prophecy. I stayed up way to late reading because of that.
The Enclave war at the end, and all of El’s classmates being ready to help her without knowing the whole story because she’s the only one they’ve seen try to help everyone, not just the people who would be useful. Her conversation with Li Shanfeng, him wanting to make sure she had the information that he got too late. Him telling her that what had happened was not her fault, but theirs. Orion looking for her in the crowd. ‘You’re already dead. You’re already dead, but stay anyway.’
The fact that nothing was ‘magically’ fixed - people went right on making the same stupid, selfish choices, and El and her friends were going to have to do a lot of hard work to make thing better for the future.

I think the scholomance series is a fascinating answer to H*rry P*tter in that it is a condemnation of neocolonialism whereas H*rry P*tter is a celebration of neocolonialism.

“The Golden Enclaves” was so good!
I’m going to have to read it again immediately because whatever undiagnosed neuro-divergence I’ve got gives me 150% reading speed and only about 60% reading retention.
No spoilers, but given the gross, sloshing bad dream I had last night, I certainly retained the end of chapter 3.

The Golden Enclaves by Naomi Novik
Spoiler free review
I have so many feelings! I'm not even all the way through this 3rd installment of the series, but I had to come scream about it a bit. I devoured A Deadly Education and waited eagerly for the rest of the story, especially after that cliffhanger ending from The Last Graduate! The Golden Enclaves has delivered a lot of what I wanted already: acknowledgement of trauma, some healing, getting the band back together, new horrific adventures to save friends and the world. The theme of CHOICE and intended and unintended consequences of choices made continues to be front and center.
Okay. I'm gonna go finish this and then probably reread the whole series. :D
