To mark the #40thanniversary of this release, veteran electronic composer #CarstenNicolai AKA Alva Noto has created a mesmerising cover version. In The Cure’s hands ‘A Forest’ was dark, urgent and poppy. However, on this cover from Alva Noto, The Cure’s original is inverted to stunning effect. Alva Noto does away with the beat and Smith’s singing, instead opting to float the track on a bed of cinematic #electronic tones. As globules of bass map out ‘A Forest’s chord progression, Alva Noto drapes a hissing synthetic fog over the track in a manner that invokes, albeit in a rather more abstract way, the same #Gothicatmospheres of The Cure’s original. You are in the house and the house is in today.” ✨📖✨📖✨ Catherine House by Elisabeth Thomas has an incredibly eerie and gothic atmosphere that follows Ines as she goes through the isolated but prestigious university known as Catherine House. I have to admit that I was a huge fan of the twisty, mind bending and secretive boarding school that had so many secrets. I loved that we saw the world from Ines’s head and point of view. I know that a lot of people struggled with her, but I liked that she was introverted and obsessive, indecisive and often disassociated from what was really happening around her. It made for an interesting ride. I didn’t like the fact that the /something/ wasn’t really discussed, even when it was. I’m not a fan of things that aren’t properly discussed, of the full information not being given, or open endings, and this book had all of that, which is why in the end I only rated it 4 stars.
