Many of Natsu's habits come from Igneel, and he still keeps doing them despite the pain he felt when his father abandoned him. However, who he was and the family he had among the dragons are just as important to him as the family he's found in the guild, and he loves them all dearly... Even when they go out of their way to celebrate his birthday, a day he associates with upsetting memories.

However, a special gift from Gray simoultaneously makes things better and worse. How will he cope with finding out exactly how and why Igneel abandoned him, and the memories that come to the forefront of his mind while in the place he called "home" before Fairy Tail?

 This two shot is for the Gratsu week 2021 prompts "Surprise" and "Goodbye." Jinx, posting things again? In 2022? It’s more likely than you think. also the second chapter was incredibly late oops.

Random Gratsu hc’s

Job dates. Training dates. they’ve probably had like 3 real dates not counting anniversaries

Grays childhood nickname for Natsu was Ashes, it was one of the first he called him and probs the only one that wasn’t driven as an insult.

he stopped calling him that at some point in their early teens, but he accidentally let it slip post forming the team and Natsu wouldnt respond to anything else from him for like a week straight

Gray has chronic pain, and he will drape himself over Natsu when it gets bad bc hes a human heating pad. Natsu takes it in stride even if hes having a conversation with someone

If Natsu gets too flustered (or turned on, or angry) his temperature will rise a lot, and since Gray runs cold their first kiss (and plenty after) created light steam

its happened during most of their firsts as a couple and it always makes Gray laugh which in turn causes Natsu even more embarrassment which creates more steam

its a vicious cycle

Gray fell first, Natsu fell harder

Gray isnt bad at flirting per se, hes just awkward ans gets too embarrassed with it. He prefers to ‘flirt’ with actions (looking him up and down, gifts, being touchy)

Natsu unintentionally flirts, hes not the type to hold back and says what he means. So he ends up giving the most genuine, love struck compliments known to man and he doesn’t even realize.

However, his deep hidden knowledge of actual flirting comes out when they’re fighting

Even though they argue constantly they have a rule against going to bed angry that they follow religiously, and if that means they don’t sleep for days on end sometimes thats nobody’s business but theirs.

When they started dating the original plan was to wait to tell people, but Natsu, who was genuinely vibrating with excitement and a need to tell everyone, broke within the first week

(what he doesnt know is Gray actually broke first, telling Cana the day of the first date (He needed moral support and shes had to listen to him moon over him for years! she deserved to know!))

Not that it really mattered, half the guild thought they were dating already

There was no formal announcement, they just started making out in the guild and that was that

ironically, the guildmates closest to them were the ones that had no clue and were surprised. And the ones that werent that close went on abt how ‘it was so obvious’ and ‘how could you not know?’

Once the shock and awe died down, ppl started panicking trying to figure out who to give the shovel talk to

baseline; it was very eventful

Before they started dating every now and then you could catch Gray looking in pure awe at Natsu when hes beating the shit out of someone

He doesnt even try to hide it now, even if hes the one Natsus fighting

They dont actually know how they started dating. one minute they were fighting and the next they were making out, two days later they were on a date in a restaurant way too fancy for them. and that was that

Gray has used Natsu as a human lighter so many times over the years its likely he doesnt even carry one any more

Natsu will eat the flame if Gray tries to use one till he asks him

fairy tail rarepair headcannons

gratsu: so much CHEMISTRY. fighting as flirting. smirking so much their faces hurt. lots of pda. BEAUTIFUL.

navia: origin story would be great. juvia getting over gray and moving on to natsu but healthy crush not obsession! she learnt what she did wrong with gray and is going to actually try to get natsu to go out with her. cue obviously in love juvia and oblivious natsu. 

jerza: slow burn childhood friends to lovers. classic trope of 'he is the only one who can make her feel emotions'. fantastic.

stingue: opposites attracting. dark rain cloud and sunshiney rainbow. emotionally mature.

lolu: loke is a playboy but lucy has captured his heart. cue loke trying to win over lucy with romantic gestures. she always blushes but refuses to admit that it works. they start dating, everyone in the guild teases lucy about dating her contractually bound spirit. they call her kinky, and she hates it.

chendy: gals being pals. they are best friends with crushes on each other. they don't confess because they're scared they'll be rejected. but chelia works up the nerve to tell wendy, and they start dating immediately. they hold hands all the time. wendy takes the first step to kiss chelia on the cheek. they are adorable and in love and it's great.

lygray: okay i LOVE their brotherly relationship like so much BUT I can totally see them as exes. like at some point in the past, when they're both not in the best headspace and in need of companionship, gray was like "what if we sort of dated? shut up, I don't mean that I like you or anything but why don't we try out a more intimate relationship that what we have now?" for weeks, he had been feeling lonely, and when he saw couples in public, he felt jealous that they had someone they were so close to. so he takes a while but finally asks lyon if he wants to do something like that (while blushing so much, he looks like he's on fire) lyon had the exact same feeling of loneliness and they're definitely each other's last resorts, but after all the blushing and humiliation, lyon begrudgingly agrees. also they can both admit that the other is decent looking. they're not exactly dating? more like they're just closer than they used to be. like they'll hold hands sometimes (in private, they're way too embarrassed to do anything in public) and they start sleeping in the same bed either after one of them has a bad nightmare, or if one of them felt really lonely and depressed sleeping in an empty bed and wanted someone there. they don't really want to kiss each other but they figure that since everything else felt nice, maybe kissing would too. they also really wanted to be close with each other and this seemed like the natural next step in their situation. so they try to kiss but it doesn't work cause it feels too weird kissing someone who used to be like a brother to you. because of that, they break up and decide to stay brothers cause they just work better like that. but they really enjoyed how close they were (that's why they stayed together in the first place) so they just continue those tendencies and it becomes second nature. like when they hang out, even if their friends are there, they'll just instinctively hold hands without even noticing. and when lyon and gray are travelling together or sleeping in the same room, they'll just sleep in the same bed without saying anything. sometimes, lyon will lightheartedly tease gray about it, “remember that time you asked me out?” gray always gets really blushy and embarrassed. “it’s not like it was just me, you’re the one who agreed!” and one day, after a hard-earned battle, they’re both pretty roughed up and hurt but lyon is way more hurt than gray. lyon is resting on a bed and gray’s sitting next to lyon cause he’s worried about him. lyon croaks out “remember when you thought it was a good idea for us to date?” gray just smiles and says “yeah, i remember” cause he’s glad lyon feels well enough to joke. lyon isn’t looking at him when he says “you were right. it was a good idea.” gray glances at lyon and sees the small smile on his face and says “yeah, it really was.”

NatsuGray Week (Gratsu Week) 2023 Day 7: Journey

Natsu and Gray (with Happy tagging along for obvious reasons as Natsu's closest companion) are doing a quest which also serves as the journey (or the adventure). With the possible outcomes:

The quest ends well for both boys and they spend their time together in the inn before trekking back to the guild.

The quest ends too well so that both boys start bickering which also escalates to big fight. With destroyed town (since they are disaster boys when they are left on their own devices, after all...).

Other times, it’s just a stray thought when he watches Natsu laughing. So bright and so pure, his smile is perfection, and Gray is a stain to Natsu’s everything, dark to his light, winter to his summer. 

Whenever he does think like that, Natsu seems to know, and he stops whatever he’s doing just to approach Gray. 

“You’re thinking too much.” 

Sometimes those words are accompanied by a faint punch to his shoulder. Yet when they’re alone, it’s different. Then it becomes a gentle finger that smooths the frown on his brow, a tender kiss that leaves his lips tingling, or a hug from behind that warms him deep inside.

I have no idea why it's being so hard for me to go back to writing and reading gratsu.

The gratsu reading is being so hard. Which is weird. I was quite interested in following the stories and want to read all the gratsu week fics that I have open (seriously, need to finish these fics because I'm having too many tabs open on my browser and I don't like that xD) and want to comment too. I'm very behind on that and don't want that.

Then writing... it's hard to focus. More so when there are some five gratsu royal au plots fighting for attention inside my brain and I'm just distracted reading manhwas.

Writing is so hard. And I have to finish the gratsu week fics and the sin eater fic! The baker!Gray au and IC AU are also bothering me.

While it is certainly early to be talking about Nalu Week 2024, now that our post-2023 feedback survey has been up for a few weeks, we wanted to keep you guys in the loop with what sort of feedback we received and how we’re going to use that to improve our next event.

Dates

About half of respondents had no preference about dates, but those who did seemed to like our current dates, or otherwise prefer earlier July dates.

While it is much too early to set dates now, it does look like we will be keeping the event in the month of July.

That does mean we have to figure out how we’re going to work around Nalu day and other ship events—This year’s event crossed over with Gratsu Week, and while that isn’t necessarily a bad thing, it’s important to us that we try not to step on the toes of other ship weeks.

Regardless of what dates we choose, we will be announcing them well in advance. This year we only had just over a month between the announcement and the event. While this worked for some people, we would like to make sure there is plenty of time for everyone who wants to participate.

Prompts

We had originally planned to run submission and voting for prompts, but with the time crunch we were under in trying to keep the ship week in July, we ended up having to create the prompts within a small group and trying to keep them as broad and accessible as possible.

While we’re generally happy with how our prompts turned out considering the circumstances, we understand why some people may have felt uninspired by that.

To circumvent this, next year we will be implementing submissions and voting for the prompts.

We received some feedback about bonus prompts or double prompts. We have not made a decision yet on if we will implement this—we’re going to need more feedback to see how people feel about it. If it is something people overwhelmingly want to see for next year, we will do our best to implement it.

Other socials

While we’re thankful to have collaborated with the past host on Twitter, next year we will be hosting it ourselves.

Allaboutnalu has a semi-active Twitter account where we will be hosting the event next year, pending changes on the platform given the current turbulence it’s facing.

We also have an Instagram, where we had originally planned to share Nalu Week entries on our story, but due to Instagram changes which meant you can no longer sort tags by most recent, we were unable to do that in a way that we felt was fair to all creators.

If this changes, we will implement that next year, but for now we will just be using our Instagram as a space to share our announcement posts.

Thank you to everyone who provided us with feedback. The survey is now closed but we will be seeking more feedback in the new year before we begin planning the next event.
