“Are you sure you don’t need to get back?” he asks, passing her a glass of wine. Breha prefers whites, he remembers belatedly, but she takes the glass with an easy grace and a grateful smile.

“Bail is going to be cooped up at the office for most of the night,” she’s quick to assure, swirling her glass for a moment before taking a small sip. “Ben is keeping him company there, so I’d have the house to myself tonight. I don’t need to do anything.”

“I’ll send the guys my thanks, then,” Anakin replies, settling on the couch beside her. Knees and elbows knock together, but neither pays it any mind. This isn’t the first time Breha has come to his aid, and it certainly won’t be the last. “I don’t know where I'd be without you tonight.”

Breha chuckles, her soft laughter mixing with the wine and smoothing away the last of Anakin’s frazzled nerves. “Still wrestling your daughter into pajamas, no doubt.”

“How did she come out looking so much like Padme, but with the worst of my temper?”

Conversation flows easy, as does the rest of the wine. Updates on the twins, his projects around the house, the search for a school he can trust with his kids. A few hours at daycare here and there are so vastly different from starting Pre-K. Breha tells him about her work as a lawyer, Bail’s political work, about the trouble Ben has gotten into as the man’s bodyguard. They talk about the music he’s listening to, the books Breha has read, the tv shows that have captured the twin’s attention this week. By the time they reach the bottom of the bottle, Anakin finds himself curled into Breha’s side, his head resting on her shoulder and her fingers carding gently through his hair.

When Padme passed, Anakin became desperately afraid that the friends he’d made through her would leave him behind. That they’d been Padme’s friends, and had humored his presence only as an extension of the woman they knew. Of course, that hadn’t been the case. Instead, Breha, Bail, and Ben had stepped up, supporting him in his grief and the struggles of single fatherhood. Bottles, bathtimes, babysitting; whenever he felt out of his depth, his friends were there to provide him with whatever he needed. Even financially, the wealthy couple shouldering some of his burdens so that he could stay home with the twins instead of working himself to death at his mechanic’s job. He promised to pay them back for every cent once he was in the workforce, but his assurances were always met with easy laughter and waved hands. This is the least they can do for him, they said, and he’d spent more than one night crying in his room, overwhelmed by the gratefulness he felt for those around him.

Maybe that’s why he does it–the warmth in his chest at the thought of his friends mingling with loneliness and how desperately he misses his late wife. Maybe that’s why he leans up and kisses Breha like he’s drowning and she is the only thing that can keep him afloat. At this moment, she is. Holding him close, holding him tight, the hand in his hair catching in the soft tangles at the nape of his neck. She chases his lips with a laugh when he breaks away with a soft whimper, the pinpricks of pain when she tugs setting his body alight.

He blames it on the loneliness when he allows her to pull him down, pull him over her. On the wine when he reaches under her dress, up her thighs, and chokes on the realization that she is wearing nothing beneath. He blames it on nerves when he fumbles with the zip of his pants, anxious laughter bubbling up as the moment stretches too long before he’s finally able to push his trousers down past his ass.

They should be doing this in the bedroom, he thinks as he palms himself, fearful of waking the twins despite knowing how soundly they sleep. He should put on a condom, he considers when Breha places a gentle hand over his. He shouldn’t be fucking his friend, Bail’s wife, he almost says when she guides him to the wet heat of her. But he’s been so lonely and they’ve had two bottles of wine and Breha doesn’t seem terribly worried about these things as he pushes into her.

“Fuck, good boy, Ani,” she gasps, running a hand up his shirt to scratch her nails along his spine and something in him snaps. He wants to hear her say those words again, wants to be good for her in a way he hasn’t been for anyone but Padme. Maybe not just her, he thinks, but pushes those thoughts aside as the living room fills with the sounds of slapping skin and their own panting breaths.

No one has touched him this way since before the twins were born, before Padme died, so Anakin forgives himself for cumming like a hormonal teenager. Between one stroke and the next, far before he expected, without even the decency to pull out. All he can do is cling to Breha, their hips pressed tightly together and a ragged keen ripping free from his throat as he fills her.

The laughter that follows is not unkind. Breha pets him gently as he comes down, murmuring soft praises that soothe some aching wound inside of him until he becomes too sensitive and has to pull out. His cum leaks free without his cock to stop it, sliding down her thighs to smear on the couch beneath them.

“Ani,” Breha murmurs, but whatever she means to say is cut off when he bends to chase its trail with his tongue.

Anakin will never have it said that he’s an inconsiderate lover. He may have gotten ahead of himself before, but he takes his time now, working her open again with his fingers and tongue. Pumping into her, worrying at her clit until she also cums, grip tight on his hair and thighs clamped around him.

When she finally releases him, scalp stinging and short of breath, Anakin clambers back up to collapse bonelessly atop her. Breha doesn’t seem to mind, pressing a soft kiss to his forehead before sleep takes him.

“How are you today, Doctor?” Gravel greeted him as she usually did in the morning, approaching him to kiss his cheek as was her custom-

-and was met instead by him kissing her forehead. “In a bit of a hurry, I’m afraid. Have a meeting to get to, but I’ll be back after lunch.”

“Oh.” She touched where his lips had met her skin, blushing brightly. “Um, I’ll see you then?”

“Of course.” The Doctor grabbed his work laptop, packed it into its carrying case with its accessories, and then came back for a second pass, walked past her...hesitated, walked back to her, kissed her forehead again, and left.

For a few moments, she remained, stunned, where she stood, before the widest, brightest smile she could manage burst onto her face. “Ahhhh! Is it finally happening?! I think it’s finally happening! He kissed me first! This is, this is...oooooh, I must be dreaming~”

“Forgot something.” He walked back through the door, walked back to his desk as if to get something...before taking his laptop back out, a wicked smirk on his face. “I don’t have that meeting until tomorrow.”

“...Eh-heh~” Gravel closed the door, turned on the spot, and mechanically sat back down before slumping over in her chair.

The Doctor walked over to her, eyes still sparkling from his mischief just then. “Sorry about lying like that, but I had to know what would happen if I beat you to the punch. It really made you that happy?”

“Mmhmm~” She wasn’t mad at him - how could she be, it was the Doctor after all - but she was going to be out of it for the rest of the day, trying to temper her glee. “It means you’re finally taking an interest in me~”

“You’re uh, heh...You’re not wrong.” He called his chair over to him with the use of his Arts and sat next to her.

The knight giggled. “I knew if I was persistent enough, it would happen. I had every faith in you, Doctor dearest~”

“Yeah...I’m sorry I’ve been hesitant, it’s just...” He sighed. “Can I ask you something? Something really personal?”

“Anything for you~”

He shrugged. “I figured, but still. Why did you pick Gravel as your codename?”

“You want to know that?” She shrugged. “My place on the battlefield is to slow down the enemy before being trampled underfoot, like gravel, and being born a slave, I’ve gotten used to being called worse things than it, so it just seemed natural.”

“...I thought as much. What was it like, being a knight who ‘belonged’ to somebody like that?”

Gravel cocked her head. “I still belong to someone, Doctor, although your amnesia may have stolen that piece of information from you. Much like you stole my heart~”

“Wait, do-” Gears fell into place in his head, but he didn’t like how they were turning. “Gravel, you...I didn’t buy you from someone, did I?”

“You did! How did you guess?”

The Doctor felt a wave of jumbled emotions pass over him. “How could I...what kind of man buys a person from someone? Did I free you from that contract?”

“...Why...why would you do that?” Catching him completely by surprise was the panic in her voice. “You don’t mean that, do you? I...I thought things were going so well.”

“I mean, you’re not anyone’s property, Gravel, you’re a living person with thoughts and feelings and aspirations.”

She nodded. “Yes, but-”

“So by possessing you as if you were a piece of furniture or a parcel of land is morally corrupt, even at the most basic level.” He was staring at her intently. “I can’t live with that on my conscience!”

“But Doctor...if you free me, someone else will take me instead, and I don’t want to leave you!”

He blinked several times in rapid succession. “I- you mean someone from Kazimierz who finds you can just enslave you all over again, even if someone releases you?”

“Mmhmm. It’s...It’s why I’m glad you’re my master, Doctor. You never treat me as anything less than a person, and today you finally...you kissed me first~” Tears were falling from her eyes, but her expression hadn’t changed from a faded smile. “All I ask is that I can stay by your side until I die a peaceful death in your arms.”

“I’m so sorry. I- I didn’t realize what a horrible position you’ve been trapped in until now, and I definitely don’t want you to leave. After you thwarted that assassination attempt Reunion made on my life, I...I owe you everything.”

Gravel wrapped her arms around him and fell forward, leaving her chair and sitting in his lap. “I give it to you freely, darling~”

“Then with your permission.” The Doctor cupped her face with a hand, eliciting a gasp. “You’ll never need an excuse to kiss me again, darling.”

“Could you...call be by my name, Doctor?”

He frowned. “I will, but I’m afraid you’ll have to tell me.”

“I will~” She traced his jawline and along his throat with a finger before she leaned in to whisper, “Senomy.”

“Senomy...Senomy~” He’d kept them both waiting long enough; his hand gently guided her face back in line with his as the Doctor found her lips with his for the first time.

The first of many, even just that morning.

He’s Going The Distance

There was an old thought resurfacing as Chris looked at Ethan. A man who could live through anything was what S.T.A.R.S. had wanted, Ethan would have been welcomed into the fold. The man was a machine when it came to surviving anything. Despite this, he seemed too oblivious to notice when something was wrong with him. All the healing fluid in the world couldn’t help the man with how much constant pain wracked his body. It was almost impossible to discern one pang of pain from the rest. That hand was a nasty wound, the staples not quite sanitary when they’d been secured into his skin.

But that wasn’t what he’d noticed just now.

“Ethan,” He began, his voice soft and wary as if speaking too loudly might shatter the other man. “You’re bleeding.”

“I am?” His voice sounded exhausted, hoarse, and so soft Chris barely heard him.

Tugging him closer for inspection, he unbuttoned Ethan’s shirt and pulled it away like a pair of curtains. Yanking up the undershirt he wore, Chris paused a moment to stare. Unable to help how his fingers splayed over the other’s stomach, eyes taking in the thick scars beneath his pecs. His thoughts turned away from the injury for a second, he only stopped when he reached the center of Ethan’s chest. He took in the soft peach fuzz there with a quirk of his lips he wasn’t in control of. Finally, his fingers fell over the thick gash leaking over Ethan’s pale skin, and the touch made Ethan recoil some. 

“Don’t,” Chris warned, eyes narrowing a little as he reached around, pulling Ethan close again by his waist, a hand on his middle back, “You’re hurt. I’ll fix you right up.” 

Leaving Ethan for a moment, he returned with a basin of warm water and a few washcloths. Where he’d gotten them from, Ethan didn’t know, and he couldn’t find it in himself to care. 

Dragging one wet cloth over the blood, he cleaned Ethan up despite his hisses and gasps of pain. What was the best option was going to hurt, so Chris started by applying a local anesthetic gel to the area around the wound. He must have found it when he brought the rest of his supplies, Ethan figured. He winced, flinching when Chris’s hands got too close to the weeping injury, but he sucked in a deep breath and bit the thin skin on the inside of his lip. It was all he could do to keep himself from making any more noise.

“I’m going to have to give you stitches.” Honestly, Chris was worried that Ethan was going to start leaking organs. It was deep, and he could almost touch the other’s rib bones. Ethan had really taken a beating, and it was hard to fathom how he hadn’t noticed this. Then again, he was in shock after everything that had happened, after all of the mental and physical trauma he had taken. Maybe it wasn’t such a strange occurrence. 

After all, he was a civilian. He hadn’t been meant to find these kinds of things. If he had stayed away, he would have been blissfully unaware, but there might have been a worse problem on Chris’ hands by the time they arrived at the scene.

“Okay.” Letting out the breath he’d been holding, Ethan nodded just slightly to save him from aggravating his pounding headache, “Just… Do it quickly. I don’t feel good.” Swaying, he felt his knees begin to buckle, and Chris caught him in a tight embrace. This wasn’t going to work with Ethan standing, anyway.

Hefting him up bridal style, Chris carried Ethan like he weighed nothing. Sitting him down on a nearby gurney, he removed his shirts and set them aside. They were stained, torn to hell, and bloody. He’d have to get him a change of clothes. Helping ease him to lay down so that his right side was facing out, he ran a hand over the other’s chest in a hope to help calm him. Maybe it wasn’t entirely innocent, but he was trying to stay focused here.

“This might hurt, but I promise I’ll be quick.” All Chris got in return was a soft murmur he couldn’t hear, let alone understand. If nothing else, Chris was efficient, and Ethan looked like he was going to faint. That might help him do this without Ethan bellyaching the whole time. Stepping away, Chris grabbed a first aid kit, opening it up and setting it beside Ethan on the cot. Digging out a needle, some antiseptic, and surgical thread, he worked the thread through the eye of the needle and set to work.

The laceration was likely already infected, if not by something typical, then by the mold Ethan had been exposed to. With a little sigh, Chris poured some of the liquid over it, making sure to use gauze to get it inside. The forceps he had grabbed entering it made Ethan grunt, but he was too tired to try and fight it. Chris diligently worked on cleaning him up, wiping at more blood before grabbing the sterilized needle. He wiped it down again with a clean antiseptic wipe before starting with the initial stick. Ethan didn’t seem to notice this, due to the numbing gel, and Chris was glad for it.

With the easy glide of the needle and his skillful hands, he made quick work of the stitches, hoping not to bother Ethan too much. Once they were tight, he cut the cord and cleaned up the wound once more, wiping away the gel with a few medical towelettes, before drying the area. To make sure it would stay clean, he rubbed another cloth damp with warm water on the site before running more of the wipes over it. A dry rag then worked over the glistening flesh, and he didn’t stop until he had patted him dry.

“Ethan, I need you to sit up. I have to wrap this.” Chris spoke, breaking the silence in the room they were in. Unfortunately, it seemed that Ethan had fallen asleep, or maybe passed out, so he had no choice but to gently shake him awake. “Ethan, you have to sit up.”

Ethan nodded absently, slowly pushing himself up with the other’s aid. Bracing himself on his shaking arms, he let Chris wrap him up with gauze from his stomach to his shoulders, surprised by his gentle hands. Once Ethan was bandaged up, he was allowed to lay back once more, and Chris didn’t think about his next action. Kissing Ethan’s forehead gently, he petted a hand over the skin and the other’s sweat-damp hair.

“You should be alright, now. I’ll keep an eye on this.” Voice quiet, he smiled slightly, hoping to keep him at ease. It didn’t seem like Ethan was going to panic, though, too worn down to do much but flutter his eyelashes. “Sleep, now. I’ll get you some pain killers when you wake up.” God knew he’d need them. Moving the gurney around so that he could be more comfortable and closer to the setup for the I.V., Chris sighed in relief. Already asleep, or so he hoped.

Settling in a nearby chair, Chris pulled out his phone. He’d be stuck here for a while, for sure. It wasn’t like he had anything better to do, he’d been set to guard Ethan while his tests were being done.

Ethan didn’t wake for what felt like hours, and when he did it was with a groan of pain. Chris was quick to give him water and a shot of morphine that he was instructed to administer through the I.V. that a nurse had given Ethan. At the very least, he was going to be taken care of.

“Thanks.” Ethan managed, his voice cracking halfway through. 

“You need care.” That much was obvious. Chris combed a hand through the other’s blond locks once more. “If that means I have to do it, then so be it.” There was an odd fondness he felt for Ethan in this moment, watching him nod, his eyes glassy and distant. “You’ll be okay.”

With any luck, he’d bounce back from this. He’d been through hell already, what was another ordeal to save him?

AN: There we go! It’s not super shippy but I’ll still tag it, just in case. Also, this probably makes more pain for the start of The Village, but that’s okay. I might write something about it when I’ve seen more of the game. I got it preordered for my birthday but it’s at my friend’s house until I can see her again. I did hit a milestone a few months back as well. To those of you who follow me, whatever the reason, I appreciate you all 💛 I started this blog after discovering my love for k-pop and I didn’t really know where this would go. I didn’t think I’d get very far or reach many people and really, I didn’t care about that. I was here to have fun and enjoy the music, groups, and vastness of Korean pop. If you want to write a daemon au with the names and forms I list here, feel free (unless they’re in the list of my Actual Original characters, they belong to me), since that was the original intention behind this list.

Because I don’t know about you, but sometimes I don’t want to have t put in all the effort to figure out someone’s daemon’s form and name. I usually end up doing it anyways, but that’s not the point.

STMPD Recommends Bubblegum Crisis Fanfiction: Chris Schumacher's Nostalgia

I had almost forgotten this little story, put up on Usenet in 2005 (after the bulletin ceased to have any cultural currency, I thought), but then the fellow who had written it showed up on my thread about this project on reddit and said it might be worth looking at, also saying ‘but only because I wrote it’. Well, it is. It very much is.

I remembered parts of this particular story, actually, even still had it connected in my memory with the cryptic title. Well, two parts, really - the two which are climactic, or dramatic, or at least the most tied to the stakes of the story. This is a story where the one true Boomer-versus-Saber fight takes place right in the beginning, and is dealt with casually, as little more than a way to propel us into the plot proper.

And why wouldn’t it be that way? This isn’t a story about a Saber who is particularly suited to combat. It is a story about Nene.

Yessssss that’s right, folks! And it’s a story which actually papers over her suit’s lack of weapons but powerful EW rig by giving her a role in combat! Boomers synchronize, communicate amongst each other to solve problems in combat. Nene tracks those frequencies, and jams em’ to keep the Boomers nice and stupid. This is an idea Shawn Hagen had in a little post years ago, and I had independently of anyone twenty years later, and it’s a great idea that no canon Crisis series ever bothers to develop, which is a pity because it makes sense and fills in Nene’s role in the team properly.

So: Nostalgia has a present where, for reasons unclear to me, GENOM is on the verge of dissolution, but Boomers still keep showing up. Nene slips up in a fight, and Sylia wonders if a new Saber - someone who could work the EW alongside Mackie in the field truck - might be worth looking into. Nene gets to pick someone out, actually - an old friend of hers from her days on hacker subculture message boards.

And from there, the story also drags us back to Nene's past, a pipsqueak of a kid in college doing hacking as a hobby when she's banging through her classes too fast, discovering a covert message - a hacking test, if you will - planted on that board by Sylia. She beats it. Somehow. And joins the Knight Sabers, even when it's clear Priss and Linna are less enthusiastic about her joining.

And that's sort of the running thread between the past and the present: Nene's desperate, burning desire to be wanted by the Sabers, by other people in general. This new guy - Huebert J. Ebson (Sounds like Brian J. Mason, but it isn't an anagram, it does appear to be his real name) - in the present is beating all the tests Nene struggled with all those years ago, even beating her on a competitive hacking test. Meanwhile in the past Nene proves her worth by causing the fuel cells of rampant Boomers to explode before the Sabers get there - which only makes Priss and Linna annoyed. So... what's Nene to do? Move on? Pass out of the Knight Sabers? Well, no. I don't want to spoil the twist because it's one you see coming to a degree, but then are even more surprised by once you read the details of it, because Schumacher is just that good at writing this little tale.

What's left to say? Nene isn't my 'favorite' Saber but she has a certain earnest loveableness in 2032 and Crash, and a hidden relevancy to the Sabers, that so many fanfictions refuse to capitalize on because the core series doesn't do it. Either that, or they're writing stories along the line of Grand Mal, endlessly edgy with one-note characters abounding. (A great many - like that Twisted Path one - seem to delight in pigeonholing Priss as a 'bitch', perpetually angry and spiteful, either because they don't like her, or because they need to one-up her like with Twister to show the potency of said Character. Hopelessly Lost does this, but then bothers to use Priss beyond that, shows her as a bit more laid-back than those other fics, as a genuine pal to Gryph and Zoner.) And Nostalgia knows how to bring the best parts of Nene out, more than even other Nenefic ever does. It's hands-down one of the best Saber character studies out there.

Greetings oh readers of the fic and true champions of imagination.You know the rules. The charicters from Jewel Riders belong to Bahbot.. the remaining ones are mine. If you try to use them without my permision I will have to send my pack of incredibly annoying green poodles after you.That being said this is a new story of a kid. but not just any kid.. but you will see that. and now I give you the begining of True Beginings

“Get back here you little thief” a palace gaurd yelled

“You just had to do it didn’t you Scamp?” Dav yelled at the ferret in the pack over his shoulder “You just had to steal that money from the princess didn’t you?”

The ferret looked at Dav mournfully.

“Okay,okay shut off the big eyes” Dav said with the gaurd trailing closly and getting closer ” We have gotten out of worse messes and we’ll get out of this one. I just wish I knew how”

Dav’s eyes darted back a forth as he ran down the hall. The Gaurd was getting closer when he saw his salvation a stairway to the roof. Dav threw the door open and pulled himself up the stairs with the guardrail. His lungs were on fire but he couldn’t stop. He shrugged through the pain and pushed himself further step by step. the door to the roof within sight. Dav ducked as he opened the door to avoid the close grasp of the red faced guard and sped outside to a rush of fresh air with a ear piercing scream.

“Get back here with those gold coins you rotten thief” the guard yelled out in aggravation

Dav ignored him and moved close to the edge of the roof and saw the long drop.

The guard’s eyes widened in alarm. slowly foot by foot inch by inch he moved towards Dav “Now don’t do anything foolish. Money isn’t worth dying for”

“If I give up what happens to me?” Dav asked cautiously

The guard edged just a little closer “I can’t let this kid jump” the guard thought “I know…..” “Well kid the worst that would happen would be some work to pay off the community”

“and the best?”

“Well you would be kept overnight for a hearing.. but that’s not bad” the guard replied in his kindest voice coming yet a little closer

Sheer terror appeared in Dav’s eyes ” So at best I will be kept in a room?”

” It won’t be that bad” the guard said trying to soothe Dav “Just a few more steps” the guard thought furiously just a little more

Dav looked over the edge then looked back at the guard then back over the edge. “Well with that knowledge the choice is clear” Dav said turning to the guard

“Good he isn’t going to jump” the guard thought

The guard was wrong

Over the edge Dav went

“No!” the guard yelled. He went over the edge to see the kid’s body. instead he saw the front paw of a gryfalcon coming up to collide with his face.

“I’m glad you heard me Gold Feather” Dav said scratching behind her ear tuft “He was threatening me with a fate worse then death. He was going to take away my freedom. He even said it wouldn’t be that bad”

“Humans can be very strange at times” Gold Feather replied in the Gryphonic language

“Yeah sometimes surprises me I am one” Dav laughed “Well we best be going they’ll probably send out some sort of force after us. Let’s go north and hide out there”

“Okay hang on tight” Gold Feather replied with a Gryph-grin

He’s seen those eyes a hundred times before. They haunt his sweetest dreams and most terrifying of nightmares. Sometimes they are blue, deep as the ocean, a bottomless wellspring of love and adoration. Sometimes they are molten gold, as though he were being consumed from the inside by fires of hatred and rage. They’re always different, but they’re always his. Ben would recognize them anywhere.

Some lives he remembers better than most; others he recalls but the most fleeting of moments. There are gaps in his memory, but then again, there are bound to be in this endless cycle of birth and death. Chasing those eyes across space and time from the moment the galaxy sprung into existence until the moment it fizzles out into a vast expanse of nothingness.

This, Ben knows, is his destiny.

In some lives they are brothers, in others friends, in some lovers. He couldn’t claim to have a favorite; every life is unique, with new faces and new experiences waiting around every bend. The worst are the lives where their paths never cross, the galaxy too vast and they too small to find their way to one another. Fortunately, they fall few and far between. For all he is a stubborn man, his other half is even more so, crossing deserts, oceans, galaxies to find his way into Ben’s arms.

His name is Anakin again, in this one. He gets to keep his original name far more often than Ben, whose moniker is often too much of a mouthful. In the vast expanses of space, among countless beings carrying their own fantastic titles, he can be Obi-Wan. But in the quiet of the empty lecture hall, he is Professor Ben Kenobi.

He’d known this moment was coming, of course—had anticipated it from the moment he received this semester’s enrollment roster. Still, it does not stop Ben’s breath from catching in his throat upon catching sight of the young man seated front and center of the darkened hall, those bottomless blue eyes staring him down from beneath a tangle of golden bangs.

“How did you find me this time?” Ben asks, closing his office door behind him. There is little need for secrecy, at this hour. Most classes have long since been over, and there are scarce few students or professors remaining to overhear their conversation.

“The stuffy professor thing is kind of your go-to in times like these,” Anakin says, gesturing to the world around them. “I was born a few states over. Did my research, when it came time.”

Ben crossed the distance between them, settling on the edge of Anakin’s desk. “On every college and university in the county?”

Anakin shrugged, his lips curling in a teasing smirk. “Probably the most research I've ever done in my life.”

“It’s a miracle you made it into such a prestigious school, then.”

Hi sorry Tumblr never told me about this ask!!! I would love to talk about it!

Brief summary for those unfamiliar:

Horizon Light is my take on a Star Wars/Pacific Rim crossover featuring reluctant co-pilots Obi-Wan Kenobi and Anakin Skywalker. The pair are assigned to one another after the fall of their respective jaegers. Anakin’s adoptive sister, Ahsoka, is in a coma while Qui-Gon Jinn, Obi-Wan’s partner, was killed by the kaiju that destroyed their jaeger.

Moving forward:

Obi-Wan and Anakin face a lot of internal and external conflicts that are only just starting to get touched on since I obviously haven’t updated in years lmfao.

Obi-Wan blames himself for Qui-Gon’s death and for the string of wounded co-pilots that the PPDC attempted to pair him with in the wake of his recovery. He struggles with depression, addiction, and was mentioned to have made a suicide attempt before the opening of the fic. His guilt is compacted by his conflicts with other pilots within the Ranger corps, especially Yan Dooku and his co-pilot, Ventress.

It hasn’t been touched on in the fic yet, but Dooku mentored Qui-Gon during his academy days and the pair ran several missions together prior to Obi-Wan being formally assigned as Qui-Gon’s co-pilot. He’s taken Qui-Gon’s death much harder than he outwardly displays, turning his grief into misdirected anger at Obi-Wan. There are some older rangers who feel the same, but Dooku is the primary instigator.

Beyond these conflicts, Obi-Wan also carries more than his share of self-doubt. He froze up once in combat, which led to Qui-Gon’s death. He questions his abilities and fears his inaction once again leading to the death of his partner. These fears have left him stalled, his commitment to the cause preventing him from leaving the PPDC while also being unable to move forward with a new partner.

Anakin’s background has been almost entirely untouched upon, but he has a lot going on behind the scenes. Anakin and Ahsoka met as children, and shared the connection of being orphans. They fled the foster system together, and took care of one another until they graduated school and could pursue their dream of joining the PPDC. While Anakin’s passion for technology meant he would have preferred to go into J-Tech, he followed Absoka’s dream into the ranger corps, where they discovered they were drift compatible.

Unbeknownst to Ashoka, Anakin suspects that the pair had a benefactor that greased the wheels of their admittance to the piloting program. Anakin worked the Wall of Life while awaiting Ahsoka’s high school graduation, and over the course of his duties often crossed paths with Sheev Palpatine, a Coruscant politician and one of the project’s most staunch supporters. They’ve maintained a relationship ever since, but the conversations the pair have shared when Anakin has managed some time off-base for their more recent meetings have left him somewhat uncomfortable. Sheev asks a lot of questions about the Kaiju and about the PPDC, which is not in and of itself unusual, but Anakin still finds himself suspicious and defensive when answering. He’s not raised these concerns with anyone, and is afraid of the potential consequences if he cuts off contact with his quiet benefactor.

Perhaps he would be more confident if he had a better safety net, but Anakin’s social connections are few and far between. His humble beginnings and his relationship with Palpatine have left him with a chip on his shoulder that comes out as arrogance and unchecked aggression. He struggles to maintain relationships beyond his familial bond with Ahsoka and their mutual friendship with pilot Rex Fett. He had a brief affair with a PPDC officer as a young ranger, Padme Amidala, but they broke things off as she scaled the ladder and he spent so much time traveling between bases. The suddenness and strength of his connection to Obi-Wan scares him, and has brought to light a lot of questions Anakin has tried to push aside about his sexuality and his identity. He needs a partner to continue forward in the war, but he wasn’t prepared for all of the feelings that would accompany a non-familial drift partner.

To top it all off, Ahsoka remains in a coma in the PPDC medical bay. He visits her often, and hopes that she’ll one day awaken to resume the fight against the kaiju alongside him. The medical staff believe that she will not, and that it would be kinder to Anakin to let her go. Despite claiming the decision to be his, he is very aware of their opinion and feels immense pressure to cave to their will. However, he’s not ready to let go of his hope for his sister.

Obviously, they both have a lot to address and a lot of growing to do. The kaiju threat waits for no man, and the conflict isn’t just at the coastline. Unrest in the cities at the pace of the Wall of Life program’s completion has politicians pushing for funding previously earmarked for the PPDC. Even more sinister is the growing cult of kaiju worshipers creating conflict from within, who believe that the beasts were sent by the gods to purge the planet of the unworthy. With the kaiju growing Jaegers falling, Anakin and Obi-Wan have to learn to work together or die in the process.

Tatooine nights are not a stranger to Luke Skywalker. Ever since he’d been old enough to be fascinated by the stars, clever enough to jimmy the locks on the windows, strong enough to hoist himself down from the overhang of the roof, he’d made a habit of escaping into the desert evenings. The sky stretches deep and dark above, untouched by the light pollution of the nearest cities, allowing the glow from a hundred thousand different planets to shine in the peace of the night. A thousand planets, a thousand cultures, a thousand lives that Luke Skywalker could have been born into. He thinks of them sometimes, stretching out on night-cool stone and staring up into the endless sea of stars; those would have been could have been lives. He wonders if his sire is out there, flitting from planet to planet, and if he even remembers the humble moisture farmer with whom he shared a short, passionate affair nearly twenty years ago.

Luke’s fingers tighten around the envelopes in his hands unbidden, excitement and dread filling him in equal measure as he walks the winding path from Anakin’s shop to town. It’s a long trek to make on foot, but he couldn’t risk taking one of the speeders and waking his father with the noise from the engine. The cover of the night is his disguise, the stars above his only witness in this errand that would certainly earn him an unparalleled scolding should Anakin find out before his plan has come to fruition. Or if he should discover the aging journal that Luke has stashed beneath a loose floorboard by the foot of his bed.

He has always had more questions about his and his sister’s sire than Anakin was ever comfortable asking. Summer romance, the omega would always say, come and gone before Anakin had even known he was carrying. The distant, lonely tone in which he said was always enough to bank Leia’s curiosity, the alpha child viciously loyal and filled with an indignant rage toward the sire who had left their father so heartbroken. Eventually even Luke had stopped asking, resigned to Anakin’s stilted, unsatisfactory answers, but had always kept wondering. Always kept trying to imagine the alpha who could so effortlessly sweep their father off his feet.

And at last the answers had come, in the form of an old leather journal unearthed from a box in the recesses of the attic. In its brittle pages, filled with sand and memories, he’d found them: three alphas, three names, three potential sires with whom his father had shared one very passionate summer the year that Luke and Leia were born. He’d read and re-read those pages over and over again, as hungry now for knowledge of Anakin’s lost love as he’d been when he was just a boy. It was one thing to imagine, but another to know.
