Molly Lewis - On the Lips - don't know if I'm ready for a full-on lounge/exotica (re)revival, but it's the perfect milieu for a whistler

Consider this your invitation to Café Molly, a lounge bar like they don’t make them anymore. The lights are low, the martinis are ice cold, the banquettes are velvet, and the stage is set for the electrifying talent of whistler Molly Lewis. Molly’s soft-focus cocktail music conjures up visions of classic Hollywood jazz clubs, Italian cinema soundtracks and lingering embraces between lovers. After the exotica stylings of The Forgotten Edge EP and the tropicalia-indebted Mirage EP, Molly wanted to encapsulate the sound of Café Molly for her debut album On The Lips, a dreamy tribute to classic mood music. That spellbinding sound, which usually comes to life in Los Angeles, has also popped up in Mexico City dancehalls, graced the runways of Paris and London Fashion Weeks, and made a magical appearance at a children's fairyland. Molly Lewis’s love for this smoky corner of the world doesn’t end with her songwriting. She is a devotee and an archivist, capturing and enlivening the pieces that endure. She was a regular at the legendary shows by Marty and Elayne, the lounge duo who spent almost 40 years playing LA’s Dresden bar. The duo came to global fame after an appearance in 1996’s Swingers and kept going long after that spotlight faded, finally finishing their nightly residency after the death of Marty at the ripe age of 89 last year. “That felt like the end of an era,” says Molly. But there are still flashes of that world to be found, and she finds them. “I’ve been spending a lot of time in New York lately, where there are a lot more of those moody, classic jazz bars,” she explains. Over the past few years Molly has flexed her one-of-a-kind musical skill alongside Mark Ronson on the Barbie soundtrack, as well as with Dr Dre, Karen O, actor John C Reilly, Mac De Marco, fashion houses Chanel, Gucci and Hermes, and folk rock royalty Jackson Browne. After a performance with longtime friend Weyes Blood on Burt Bacharach’s The Look of Love during a Café Molly evening at LA’s Zebulon, Molly supported the singer on a US tour, introducing her sound to a brand new audience. “I forget sometimes that what I do has that factor of surprise and uniqueness – it is something that most people have never seen before,” says Molly. She too might never have entered the idiosyncratic world of whistling had she not as a teenager seen the 2005 documentary Pucker Up, which details the International Whistling Competition. Equally amused and bemused by the eccentric event, in 2012 she competed herself. Spending her early twenties in Berlin she then moved to LA to work in film – and returned to the contest in 2015 to take home first prize. One evening Molly did a turn at an open mic at the Kibitz Room, a tiny late-night bar inside historic LA deli Canter’s. Her display led to appearances at performance art happenings across the city, and she soon caught the ear of independent record label Jagjaguwar. On The Lips was recorded with producer Thomas Brenneck of the Menahan Street Band, Budos Band, Dap-Kings and El Michels Affair, at his newly-built Diamond West Studios in Pasadena. The pair bonded over the work of 1960s soundtrack composers Alessandro Alessandroni and Piero Piccioni, and, with something of an open door policy during the sessions, a stream of acclaimed musicians ended up across the album’s 10 tracks. With her intoxicating compositions, and wry brand of stagecraft (she might not be singing up there, but she can sure tell a joke) Molly Lewis looks set to join her heroes in the storied lore of the Los Angeles lounge scene and beyond. Prosciutto and Fashion!

i’m blaming pinterest for inspiring this post, but also i just think about this a lot. this is going to be a really messy post i’m so so sorry lmao. also sorry so many of the clothes i’ve included have plaid on them but his suit gives me some plaid vibes anyway, on with the post ✨

Gucci

i’ll start with gucci because i mean this man just looks like he would be head to toe in gucci. and also, the fact that the model georgina grenville just looks like prosciutto. they look so similar even down to the teeth it’s actually unreal. i think he was inspired by her and in particular by her in some of the pictures i’ve picked but either way i had to say it. i’ve put pictures below, especially of her wearing outfits that absolutely remind me of prosciutto (they aren’t all of her but i think 6 out of the 9 photos are). this is probably the closest moodboard in this post to the clothes we actually see him wear, but please don’t expect the rest to be like this lmao. i didn’t even get to look too deep into too many of their collections because after i seen all these pictures of georgina, my moodboard for this section was already set. i’m sure there’s a LOT more than the ones i have below!

Versace

so a lot of these outfits that gave me prosciutto vibes are kind of feminine and though i don’t think he would wear a skirt, i do think he would look great in these outfits (just picture the skirt as a pair of trousers or something). his suit reminds me of plaid and i think he would look great in some sort of plaid suit (more of that to come lmao). there’s one outfit i loved that i’ve put below and though i don’t think he’d wear the scarf the model is wearing, i think he’d look good in the outfit. all of these are from the same year and the same collections (i’ve named the collections below the little moodboard!) but honestly i feel like they all could work on him somehow. also prosciutto in a trench coat? yes please

i kind of knew about this brand but hadn’t really seen any clothes until i was looking at some of the versace collections and omg some of these i think would look great on prosciutto and i think he would definitely like a few of these. some of them are a bit boring to me for the colour palette but i think prosciutto would suit them so much omg. again, prosciutto in a trench coat is such a lovely thought to me 💕 i don’t have much to say apart from that one off the shoulder blue sweater thing would look so good on him ahhh. some of these are maybe not something he would choose to wear but i think he could pull it off honestly. prosciutto in a sweater would be just *chefs kiss*. some of these are a little bit of a reach but like i said this post isn’t about exact copies of the outfit we see him wearing and more about things i could see him wearing so i’m letting it slide lmao.

Vivienne Westwood

so there’s a lot more plaid here again and i’m so sorry about that lmao. that aside, i totally think he would wear these. plaid would look so pretty on him and i really think some of these vivienne westwood suits would just look so so good on him omg. also, a lot of skirts in here again but i just imagine the outfit with trousers of the same pattern. especially with the purple plaid outfit i’ve put below because i think that would suit him perfectly, especially with its colour scheme. also one of these suits are currently on her website right now if anyone was curious lmao. it actually does have trousers to match but the model for the jacket was wearing the matching skirt soooo. some of these are maybe a little bit off the mark for him but i like to think he would still look good in them.

again some of these are a bit of a reach and honestly i kind of feel like sometimes if i see the right kind of suit i automatically think it will suit prosciutto but the first outfit i have in the moodboard with the pinstripe suit would look sooo good on him. also the outfits with the turtlenecks. he’d look so good in a turtleneck omg 😭💕 especially the outfit i’ve put below with the suit and the turtleneck, he would suit that so much! i once again don’t have much to say here i’m so sorry but here’s the moodboard anyway! also he’d look stunning in one of those dior chain necklaces that i didn’t include a picture of but i really should have lmao.

SEX SELLS: TOM FORD’S GUCCI

When considering Tom Ford's tenure at Gucci, one is immediately reminded of the slick, sexy, and sinful silhouettes that defined every collection. In the words of American Vogue, Ford's designs are "the fashion equivalent of a one-night stand at Studio 54", perfectly capturing the designer’s hedonistically glamorous aesthetic. When Ford became Gucci's creative director in '94, sales were low, but the designer managed to guide the Florentine company out of this tumultuous time and into a position of eternal glory.

Despite his daring collections, the American designer played it safe with his first show—models wore sweet colours and schoolgirl-esque skirts sticking to Maurizio Gucci’s style. Ford himself told The Cut: “it wasn’t a bad show. It just wasn’t anything”. Tom Ford was so discouraged that he was ready to walk away but thank goodness he didn't quit because the Tom Ford we all love and remember emerged one year later with his Fall 95 collection. This show was everything that his first show wasn’t. Iconic models such as Kate Moss and Shalom Harlow wore unbuttoned satin shirts and cleavage-revealing dresses leaving little to the imagination. The refreshing designs indicated a seductive shift for the brand.

One of the most memorable items from the Tom Ford era was the red velvet suit which was seen in the A/W 1996 collection. Gwenyth Paltrow wore the iconic ensemble to the MTV Awards, which- according to Alessandro Michele- “made her famous”. The red suit has recently had a resurgence as it was seen in the ‘Aria’ show which celebrated Gucci’s 100th birthday. Also, the monochromatic masterpiece made a surprise appearance in Tom Ford’s Fall 2019 collection.

Whoever said sex sells wasn’t lying. Could Gucci’s raunchy campaigns be part of the reason why the brand saw an increase in sales? The Gucci campaigns pushed the boundaries between pornography and art. Arguably, the most iconic and controversial campaign was photographed by Mario Testino and featured top model Carmen Kass with Gucci’s ‘G’ logo shaved into her pubic hair. This advert was so scandalous that the British Advertising Standards Authority investigated the ad after receiving 16 complaints. Luckily, the advert wasn’t banned as the BASA accepted Gucci’s excuse: (Gucci is) "known for brand leadership and cutting-edge imagery" and that the ad was "intended to be the ultimate ironic pun for a sexy brand in a logo-led age".
