Warlock was rescued from years in a neglectful home and I’ve had him about seven months. I’m finally starting to see him really come out of his shell (ha)! When I first adopted him he spent weeks refusing to come out of his shell when anyone was nearby. He has slowly become more comfortable with me and will now come up to greet me.
Check out this sweet video of Warlock scampering over to me and investigating my shoe when I stepped into his enclosure today. Reptiles are extremely curious and engaged with their environment, despite what some people think of them.

May I offer you my iteration of the boys before the angst sets in
This is my Ronin Raph au/iteration/timeline, I've pulled inspiration from 2003 and Rise.
Raph and Leo are both the oldest siblings, twins if you will. Raph is an alligator snapping turtle (like in Rise because it fits so well) and Leo is a common snapping turtle.
Donnie is the middle child and based on a Gulf coast box turtle.
Mikey is the youngest and I took some creative liberties with his coloring but he's based on a leaf turtle!

Anyway since I made the blog I figure I should tell you about MY turtle iteration.
It’s a little hard to explain bc it doesn’t have a theme like gumys superhero one but! I’ll do my best. (I call it the baroque verse)
I suppose I’ll start with the Kraang. I’m this one there’s only like. 4 of them. They came from the dimension x planet to earth bc on dimension x they were kinda losers bc they couldn’t do anything right, so they were all like “well show them! We’ll go to earth and transform it into a habitable place!” (Dimension x is experiencing a huge overpopulation crisis, so a whole new planet to live on would benefit them massively)
They end up meeting Bishop, who in this au is not only a cyborg but a woman (#feminism) with a mysterious past. Bishop offers to help them overthrow earth, on the condition they promise to give her a share of land. But in truth, she’s actually manipulating them for her own insane means and will probably kill them once she has what she needs. What does she need? It’s a secret (I haven’t figured it out yet she is the newest character I’ve made)
So, she builds them a vast robot army. And this is where Splinter and Sherdder come in. (In this one, shredder is splinters DAD!!)
Basically, there was a war between the hamatos and their rival clan, the Foot, in Japan. The hamatos win, ofc but this feud ends up killing sakis wife. (splinters mother). So, saki leaves the hamato clan to his pupil and him and splinter run off to America. However, they end up getting caught up in all the Kraang business, and realize that they kinda don’t want the world to end, actually, so they start their own sort of father-son rebellion against the aliens. Yay, bonding! (They actually have a very healthy relationship)
One night, they hear that the Kraang are planning to experiment more with biological soldiers, and bishop has crafted a special serum (mutagen, what else). Splinter and his father mosey on over to hq to check it out and lo and behold! They’re experimenting on innocent baby turtles! Splinter and Saki that they have to save those baby turtles from what is sure to be their demise (god forbid women do anything) and decide to launch an ambush right then and there. A lot of shit happens. Mutagen vat explodes. Walls crumble and the building comes down. Splinter (a freshly mutated Ryukyu spiny rat) snatches the turtles (who somehow fell into a mutagen puddle that had a live electrical wire in it and lived?? We’ll get to that later) and Saki and Bishop disappear.
Splinter declares his father dead and drags the babies to the sewers to raise them as his own, because what else is he supposed to do? Turns out, surprise, each of the babies have unique super powers. Terrible twos? More like “asleep on your feet fur singed off depressed as hell what did I do to deserve this at least my oldest is somewhat behaved oh wait he’s deaf how am I supposed to accommodate him I don’t know fucking sign language and I can’t look it up I’m a rat I don’t have a goddamn cellphone Jesus Christ Leonardo stop electrocuting your brother” twos!!! hahah am I right!
Fast forward 15 years. The turtles birth order (oldest to youngest) goes Donnie, Leo, Mikey, Raph. Donnie is a spotted pond turtle, Leo is a River cooter, Mikey is a gulf coast box turtle, and Raph is an albino wood turtle. As stated before, Donnie is deaf and uses a modified mix of ASL (finger spelling) and BSL (for everything else) around his brothers, and AAC around his father and certain other people who don’t know his special Frankenstein sign language. All the turtles powers in order of birth order are Foresight (which, for extra angst points, give Donnie seizures if they’re super major visions!) Electricity powers, fire powers, and density manipulation.
Oh btw, remember how Saki was declared dead? HES ALIVE. He’s just been brainwashed by the Kraang for the last 15 years and now his only goal is to kill splinter and his turtle children! Also, in the first few years of his captivity, he was so depressed and lonely that Bishop made him a robot daughter and fitted her with ai for him to talk to and spar with. That robot is Karai, and she eventually gains sentience.
That’s it for now I think. Wasn’t expecting it to get that long lol. Oops
wait holy shit this goes hard.

I decided to try creating pokemon variants or similar that one might find in my home state of Ms. I'm still working on more but it's a fun thought and doodle experiment
Blurb under cut. Please try not to take it all too seriously lol, this was just for funsies.
I'm also indulging my younger self. See a long, long time ago when I was a kid, I used to see my home as a place you could easily find pokemon around the corner. Tauros in the fields, Noctowl in the trees, the wasps were angry Beedrill, you get the idea
It was magical, a time before greed and capitalism caused rushed and unfinished games with questionable decisions by game freak higher ups. A time where I could just kinda look at the tall grass or the woods and see pokemon just living naturally without feeling a ton of responsibility or guilt for existing.
Recently I've decided to try exploring that AU, where states and such have their own dexes. Obviously some would overlap, like I'm very sure the Gulf Coast would have very similar dexes, but my idea would be that could start out with different starters that have different variant evolutions- and heck, you could even cross state borders to get theirs if that's what you wanted.
But for now, without getting way too deep, I decided to make variants based on critters that either exist here or have some sort of cultural tie in.
Let's go:
Typhlosion, Fire/Ground, low temp fires but also used for welding and construction, trusted with kids because they don't tend to start fires they don't quickly put out. The original line is already kinda mixed of badgers, weasels, moles, etc, but I think there's plenty of those here, and if nothing else Cyndaquil IS the fire mouse pokemon, and by God we got mice. Favoritism put it here admittedly since Cyndaquil was my very first pokemon in the games, and I'd want the same irl.
Blastoise, Water/Rock, basically more of a mobile tank people ride on. Uses the bubbles around its legs as wheels. Based on box turtles that live here
Chesnaught, Grass/Steel, based on various loggers and blue collar workers from here, helps with those sort of jobs and is pretty intelligent. It can form shields or slice up trees easily with its arm saws.
Yanma, Bug/Flying, based on dragonflies I see around the house
Yanmega, Bug/Steel, evolves while knowing Steel Wing. Tends to eat rusted metal from old farms and junk yards, very quick
Salandit, Ice/Electric, based on blue tailed skinks I see around my house often
Freezard, Ice/Electric, evolves from male ms Salandit. They take things by force if they want and their tails can be used as whips. Usually the females keep them in line though.
Corvilich, Flying/Rock- actually a cross over from a fan region I dabble in during my spare time. Lots of crows and corvids here, so naturally I think they'd be here too. Evolves from Corvisquire. They fight each other over nice bones and are great fliers, and are very intelligent, may or may not have good and bad omens associated
Miltank, Water/Normal, based on cows I see often taking dips in local ponds. Ms is a very farm heavy state, so I could see us having our own moomoo milk market. The arms and legs act like floaties.
Dragonite, Dragon/Fairy, evolves from Dragonair with high friendship. I wanted a psuedo legend, and then I found out Ms has its own dragon stories (even a town). I also thought it'd be neat to make a friend you'd maybe see in a forest, so I also added butterfly elements to it from the Great Purple Hairstreak.
I'm still making more, I'm progressing and getting a little better as I go, but I don't wanna get too crazy making a bunch. I'm thinking maybe about the same amount as Legends Arceus introduced. I do want to try making a full, balanced team, though, so I'll probably make more for that. So far though I could see myself with Typhlosion, Corvilich, Freezard, and Dragonite. Looking for a water type and maybe a doggo.

Raymond is a Striped Mud Turtle.
Raymond isn't big on fighting despite his generally hostile nature mainly because his aggression is a farce
He's incredibly anxious and covers it via belligerence
He's able to manipulate sounds and has the power to temporarily turn people into gold
He occasionally hears voices in his head saying things he can't understand however hasn't been as frequent
He doesn't like fighting and strongly avoids
He tends to do a lot of counting and math to keep track of the time limit of his gold paralysis
He has retractable fangs that he doesn't use often
He doesn't fight in the Nexus as he freezes up and it makes for a poor show
Barret aka Big Mama's Assistant is a Gulf Coast Box Turtle.
She was trained to be focused and resilient
She has from of psychic ability the presents itself as a type of foresight making her read opponents easily
She's not particularly stable as her power has lead her to seeing awful things when she was too young to comprehend them
She is more like a bodyguard to Big Mama even if she doesn't really need one
She's straight forward and blunt oftentimes offending Big Mama's less useful clients
She wear clothes more often then not to blend in with the Yokai she's occasionally sent to observe
She doesn't have a preference for loose clothing
Her scars were mostly training incidents as she wasn't allowed to fight in the Nexus until she was older.

First in a series of photos of my recent trip to Corpus Christi. This is a setting too for the Lexington story, which I’m changing up a bit.
This is however the place I have Gordon really wanting to go to, but is doing the Overnight Program on the Lexington first.
These are some of dozens of pics I have from the Texas State Aquarium.
It is a rescue/rehab center (boxes contain items that were removed from rescues) and displays several terrains animals live in, such as Gulf Coast and Caribbean.
Most if not all animals there are rescues and in the case of the turtles, most unable to return to ocean or they’d die. (Crush, the turtle here, had his shell broken by a boat and now he has buoyancy problems. Another seems healthy but kept beaching itself, while others have eye issues or to help save a species)
Thee we dolphins by and large are taught things they’d use in the wild and many have returned to the sea.
I have more as I said, but here’s a start.

Reading the story, I thought of the elephant ivory and rhino horn poachers in Africa. It’s relatively easy to nab the men who kill the elephants and rhinos compared to nab the bigger fish who arrange the shipping and sale of the parts in Asia. Here, with these turtles, they nabbed the big guy, but then who are the people snatching the turtles? The article tells us, confirmed by other sources: foreign students in the US, usually from China or Asian nations, who are paid to capture the turtles.
Excerpt from this story from the Washington Post:
A Chinese national is in federal custody in New Jersey after investigators said he financed an international smuggling ring that shipped more than 1,500 endangered turtles from the United States to China, valued at more than $2.2 million.
The turtles, many of which were bound with duct tape, stuffed into socks and shipped in mislabeled packages, were sold for as much as $20,000 each on the Asian pet black market, authorities said.
Kang Juntao, 24, of Hangzhou City, China, was extradited from Malaysia and arrived in the United States on Thursday, where he appeared virtually in U.S. District Court in Newark on charges of money laundering. He is being held without bail pending arraignment.
Prosecutors say Kang ran the smuggling ring from China and had never set foot in the United States before landing at JFK International Airport in New York on Thursday, escorted by federal officials.
American wetlands to associates in Hong Kong and China, according to the complaint filed in federal court. He paid for the turtles through PayPal and U.S. banks, including one in New Jersey, according to prosecutors. The turtles were then sold to wealthy collectors in Asia for thousands of dollars each, depending on coloring, sex and age. A single North American female box turtle deemed “colorful” in Hong Kong’s black market pet trade fetches up to $20,000, prosecutors said.
Kang’s operation sold five types of turtles, according to investigators: the eastern box turtle, Florida box turtle, Gulf Coast box turtle, spotted turtle and wood turtle. All five are considered endangered and are protected under an international treaty signed by more than 180 countries, including the United States, Malaysia and China.

There’s An Environmental Disaster Unfolding In The Gulf of Mexico
Rocky Kistner - July 11, 2019
As fishermen deep in the Louisiana bayou, Kindra Arnesen and her family have faced their share of life-altering challenges in recent years.
First came Hurricane Katrina, the 2005 monster storm that devastated her small fishing community in Plaquemines Parish before roaring up the Gulf Coast, killing more than 1,800 people and destroying $125 billion in property. Five years later, BP’s Deepwater Horizon drilling rig exploded 40 miles offshore, spewing nearly 200 million gallons of crude. The fisheries have not fully recovered more than nine years later, nor has her family.
But this year may be worse. A historic slow-moving flood of polluted Mississippi River water loaded with chemicals, pesticides and human waste from 31 states and two Canadian provinces is draining straight into the marshes and bayous of the Gulf of Mexico — the nurseries of Arnesen’s fishing grounds — upsetting the delicate balance of salinity and destroying the fragile ecosystem in the process. As the Gulf waters warm this summer, algae feed on the freshwater brew, smothering oxygen-starved marine life.
And as of Wednesday, an advancing storm looks likely to turn into a tropical storm or hurricane by the weekend, with the potential to bring torrential downpours and more freshwater flooding.
Fishermen and state government officials agree this long, hot summer may go down in history as one of the most destructive years for Gulf fisheries. The torrent of river water pushing into Gulf estuaries is decimating crab, oyster and shrimp populations. The brown shrimp catch this spring in Louisiana and Mississippi is already down by an estimated 80%, and oysters are completely wiped out in some of the most productive fishing grounds in the country, according to state and industry officials. The polluted freshwater has also triggered algae blooms, which have led to beach closures across Mississippi.
“The Army Corps of Engineers says we had the most rainfall in 124 years,” said Joe Spraggins, executive director of the Mississippi Department of Marine Resources. “Shrimpers and crabbers are struggling. Oystermen are almost nonexistent. … It’s not going to get better soon.”
“I’ve had grown men call me on the phone and cry,” said Arnesen, who serves on the board of the Louisiana Shrimp Association and works on state coastal management issues. “This feels like the height of the BP oil spill.”
Mississippi and Louisiana have already started the process of requesting federal disaster assistance for damaged fisheries. But it will likely be a long while before any money reaches the fishermen whose nets are coming up empty. To officially apply for disaster relief, Louisiana state officials say they need more data, which will take months to compile.
“We are seeing impacts across the coast in all sectors of the fishing communities,” said Patrick Banks, assistant secretary for the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries. “We will continue to collect data to support a disaster declaration.”
It’s not just fisheries that are suffering. Dolphins have been dying in huge numbers across the region — nearly 300 this year already, which is three times the number in a normal year, according to federal and state officials. Fishermen report finding dead dolphins floating in water near shore or beached in the marshes, covered in painful skin lesions that scientists have linked to freshwater exposure. One fisherman reported finding a mother dolphin pushing her dead baby along in the water.
“Their skin looks like a Brillo pad,” said Louisiana charter boat captain George Ricks, who heads the Save Louisiana Coalition, a coastal management advocacy organization.
Ricks and many other fishermen blame the unprecedented deluge of freshwater pouring into the Gulf. The Bonnet Carre, a huge spillway that protects New Orleans, has already opened an unprecedented two times this year to divert surging Mississippi River water and is currently pouring more than 100,000 cubic feet per second into Lake Pontchartrain. Being able to close the spillway again depends on rainfall upriver.
The Army Corps of Engineers operates the spillway and says it has no choice but to keep it open to protect property upstream. The Corps argues that some of this flooding can be beneficial to the ecosystem. “The introduction of fresh water during leakage events simulates the natural cycle of overbank flooding and provides numerous ecosystem benefits to the aquatic and terrestrial resources in the spillway,” the agency notes on its website.
But some marine biologists say the flood of freshwater can be catastrophic for species such as bottlenose dolphins, which are very territorial and are reluctant to leave their spawning grounds even when salinity levels become toxic. Endangered species like Kemp’s ridley turtles are also threatened by river water exposure, since they depend on rich Gulf marshlands to grow and develop.
“We are experiencing a Cat 5 aquatic hurricane,” said Dr. Moby Solangi, director of the Institute for Marine Mammal Studies in Mississippi. Dolphins are particularly vulnerable to incursions of river water, he said. “Every time they open the Bonnet Carre spillway, we see a spike in deaths.”
Solangi’s team recently found a stranded dolphin on a Gulfport beach, breathing slowly and covered in freshwater lesions. It died a short time later.
“Dolphins are like the black box found on airplanes,” Solangi said. “They tell you what’s happening in the environment. When dolphins are doing well, the environment is doing well.”
By all accounts, the Gulf marine environment is not well. Scientists predict the annual dead zone — a giant blob of polluted, deoxygenated water linked to algae blooms — will grow to the size of Massachusetts and suffocate even more marine life later in the Gulf this summer.
The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration declared the bottlenose dolphin deaths an “Unusual Mortality Event” in February, and its investigation is ongoing. Officials say higher-than-normal dolphin strandings spiked in May, when there were 88 discovered along the Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama coasts. That’s nearly eight times the average monthly number of dolphin mortalities during the BP spill from 2010 to 2014.
Total dolphin strandings have not reached the levels seen at the height of the BP spill, and there were fewer in June. Dr. Teri Rowles, NOAA’s marine mammal health and stranding program coordinator, said that researchers know freshwater exposure could be contributing to the health concerns, but that it’s too early in their investigation to pinpoint an exact cause.
“We do see dolphins with freshwater lesions, but not all the animals have skin lesions,” said Rowles.
Some dolphin populations have yet to recover from the BP oil spill, Rowles said, mainly due to reproductive problems. NOAA reports dolphins in heavily oiled areas are still suffering from chronic health problems and higher rates of failed pregnancies and mortalities.
But many fishermen who have worked in these areas for generations suspect something else is threatening their future: politics. As part of a plan to save Louisiana’s rapidly sinking coastline, state agencies want to pump in more sediment-heavy river water to help rebuild the disappearing land. Fishermen question the efficacy of freshwater diversions and worry about the dangers to fisheries and marine life posed by these projects. They question why NOAA would grant waivers to Louisiana last year to bypass the Marine Mammal Protection Act and allow the freshwater diversion construction to proceed.
Meanwhile, fishermen know a changing climate is not working in their favor. Scientists say the Mississippi River is expected to continue to flood in future years as the atmosphere heats up and produces stronger storms and more rainfall. Barry, the storm heading for the coast right now, is the latest to threaten the Gulf ecosystem, but certainly not the last.
All of this worries Acy Cooper, a fourth-generation fisherman and president of the Louisiana Shrimp Association who is leading a delegation of fishermen to Washington this month to plead their case for disaster assistance. He blames the Army Corps for not adequately managing the river and controlling and dredging the river passes that empty into the Gulf, making the effects of freshwater worse.
But his biggest worry is for his family and future generations. He comes from a long line of fishing families who have prospered and persevered in one of the most bountiful fisheries in the world, and he doesn’t want to be the last.
“My sons can’t make enough to feed their families,” he said. “What’s going to happen to them?”
Arnesen worries about this as well.
“If we keep operating like this, we’re going to kill the estuaries and the oceans, yet they still dismiss us,” she said. “Our fish feed America. That should matter to everyone.”

you made your own version of turtles??
tell me everything 👀👀
sorry it took me so long to answer it i WAS gonna put a detailed description of everything here but it got deleted halfway through writing it and i am Too Tired to rewrite it so here's a bunch of different discord snippets ive written abt it + a character list thing.
Donnie: Spotted pond turtle. The oldest. Deaf, uses modified sign language and AAC to communicate. Has the power of foresight. Very powerful visions can cause seizures (not fun) the spots on his shell are often painted purple by Leo.
Leo: River cooter. Middle child #1. Likes to cause trouble for fun and do dangerous things. the artist of the family. Has lightning/electric powers. Speaks fluent Japanese and sign language.
Mikey: Gulf coast box turtle. Middle child #2. Fire powers. Looks up to Leo a lot and often goes with him on his trips to cause trouble. Punk, wears lots of black and orange. Has a minor crush on Casey (but like who doesnt)
Raph: Albino wood turtle. Youngest child. Short ass mf. Density manipulation (ITS COOL I PROMISE LOOK https://powerlisting.fandom.com/wiki/Density_Manipulation ) . Often doesn't get visibly/verbally angry at his brothers, but does get very obviously violently angry at literally everyone else. (AKA rise raph around his family, 2012 raph with everyone else)
thinking about the fact the Kraang while trying to make the baroque turtles into super soldiers because their robot bodies are weak af gave them like these insane powers so when Splinter adopted them this poor, grieving, traumatized old man had to not only take care of four rambunctious and mischievous turtle babies, he had to take care of  four rambunctious and mischievous turtle babies who could set themselves on fire and walk through walls and short circuit every electronic device in his house just by sneezing, and have prophetic visions. poor guy
like imagine the terrible twos splinter is running around trying to find Raph because its bath time but he keeps walking through sewer walls, he's carrying Mikey but he has to drop him because he spontaneously burst into flames again, Donnie is literally the only one who is in the bath because he knows they're going to watch his favorite movie as a treat afterwards, and Leo read somewhere that electricity powers mean you can possibly read someone's mind, so he's following Splinter around trying to read his mind. and splinters like "How did I get into this situation"
okay so in this vers Splinter and his father had come from Japan (Haven't figured out why yet) and somehow ended up in a sort of rebellion against the kraang (it's just them two trying to thwart their plans) ne day they go in because they heard they're experimenting with some kind of supersoldiers, and they find out that they mutated four teeny tiny helpless baby turtles. So they're like "we gotta save them!!" But in the process they set off a mutagen bomb accidentally which mutates Splinter into the rat (Idk they just had some sopping wet pathetic rat dna in it or something) Splinters dad fucking dies but he manages to escape to the sewers with the turtles and trains them in ninjitsu. However, 15 years later he learns that his father DIDN'T die, he was brainwashed by the kraang and is now the Shredder and he wants to fucking kill them
I am also currently thinking about. newverse karai (Sentient robot)
I wasn't originally going to have voice claims for the baroque boys but then I listened to War! and heard Zach Callison go "What? You didn't know?" And now that's B!Leo's voice claim
the baroque was an artstyle in the late 1400s and as told by this snippet, this fits my turtles in more ways than one; the turtles, who are mutants and therefore not accepted by society and probably would be described by humans as grotesque or ugly or whatever. But they're also elaborate. Leo (who is the artist of the family in this version) cut's his mask tails into little lightning bolts and starches them so they keep their shape. raph is a creamsicle. Mikey is punk (spikes) and also has his mask tails cut into little flames (unstarched, though) and even Donnie has Leo paint the spots on his shell purple
(not a discord snippet, but i havent actually talked about my kraang or bishop in depth yet) in this version, the kraang (who look more like 2012 kraang but arent a hivemind) are still aliens ofc, but thereres these four kraang who are ostracized by their alien society bc theyre kinda pathetic, so they banded together and came to earth in hopes of taking it over and transforming it yadda yadda to prove to the other kraang they arent bitch ass losers. when they get there, however, they meet a cyborg woman with a mysterious past who offers to make them a wonderous mostly robotic army. they agree, not realizing that shes manipulative and insane, and she ends up just taking over their whole thing, the four kraang are kind of just her servants now but she works under their name. (this is bishop, by the way. if rise can make casey a woman than i can make bishop a woman #feminism)
