Bittersweet Memories

Summary: Sometimes, you have to go back to the place it all began, to relive what once was. Pairing: Baek Juho x OC Genre: Angst, One-Shot, Collab/Event Tropes: Fantasy!AU, Faun!idol, tennyo!OC, strangers to lovers to strangers Word Count: 1.3K Contains: circular storytelling, flashbacks (anything italicized is a flashback), one mention of suggestive content (no details), lots of angst A/N: Fantasy, I apologize in advance for what I've done to the poor sweetheart. This was what instantly came to mind when presented with the Mocha Madness event. Also, Ceres is a likeness to the titular character of an anime I adored way back in middle school titled Ayashi No Ceres.

"Can I get a mochaccino, Cupid?" The faun man orders as calmly as usual, adding, "Make it a double. I need a pick-me-up."

After placing the coins on the counter, Zuho makes his way to his usual table. Pulling his chair out, he sits down, carefully swinging his tail behind him to avoid sitting on it. Placing an elbow on the dark mahogany table, he rests his chin on his palm as he stares at the empty chair in front of him, zoning out into his own little world.

"Can I try the house coffee? It's my first time here."

Hearing a shy but angelic voice, he lifts his head to see her. More beautiful than most creatures who frequent the cafe, her long, healthy black hair flowing freely down her back and her beautiful blue silk kimono makes her appear heavenly to the lone faun sitting nearby. Seeing Zuho's gaze on the newcomer, Cupid points the lady in his direction and suggests him as a kind regular.

Thanking Cupid and paying for her drink, the captivating stranger approaches Zuho and asks whether she could sit with him. Moving his latte closer to himself, he motions to the chair as words betray him by failing to leave his lips entirely.

"Thank you. I hear you're a regular. I'm new around here and qould love a guide, if you're so willing."

"Sure, I would be happy to help. My name is Zuho."

Shining a smile that can cure any ailments, she responds, "Nice to meet you, Zuho. My name is Cerea. I'm a tennin - or a tennyo, more specifically - and I've wanted to roam earth for a bit now but was scared. It's nice to know somebody is willing to help lead me in good directions."

"A tennyo - no wonder you're so beautiful. I'm a faun, as you may be able to guess." He gestures around himself to show off his horns, tail, and hooves. "Although I'm often confused for a satyr since we're distant cousins in looks."

As he learns more about Ceres, he finds that her beauty goes beyond her style and appearance. Feeling her kindness in every word, Zuho befriends her quickly, establishing the next time to meet.

"Here you go, Zu." Cupid places the glass mug in front of the faun, bringing him back to reality momentarily.

"Thanks, Cupid. I really need it today."

Patting the man on the back, Cupid returns to the counter with hopes that the strength of the drink will help his friend return to his usual chipper self.

As he takes a sip, Zuho remembers the day he began dating Ceres - a time now as bittersweet in his mind as the drink hitting his tongue.

For the first time, they meet outside of the cafe. Bringing Zuho to a nice, calm meadow outside of the city, Ceres beams over the idea of enjoying one another's company out in nature.

Most of the date, they sit next to each other on the grass silently, gazing at the flowers swaying in the light wind or viewing the clouds floating lazily against the azure sky. After a while, Zuho turns to admire Ceres.

Feeling his gaze after a few minutes, Ceres turns towards him. His loving eyes bring a soft smile to her lips. Her dark hair contrasting the colorful surroundings, Zuho brushes a loose strand behind her shoulder, letting it sway in the wind alongside the flowers.

"Ceres," He starts, his gaze shifting around her. "Would you like to date?"

"I thought you'd never ask." Ceres leans in, cupping her partner's face to kiss his nose in acceptance.

Putting the cup back onto the table, Zuho feels the tears welling up in his throat. Bending forward and placing his forehead next to the glass, the faun's tail swipes furiously behind him as his emotions overwhelm him. Looking on from the counter, Cupid feels the pang of heartbreak seep into his heart, remembering how well the couple got along until yesterday's incident. As Zuho lets his tears fall onto the wood, a montage of happy moments runs through his mind, only to be squashed by the memory of yesterday.

Kissing feels like visiting heaven. Her hugs are a warm embrace, even on the coldest winter days. A smile in his direction brightens his whole day. Her voice rings in his ears like his favorite bard's most uplifting tune, her laugh like the twinkling bells that ding in the markets.

Zuho is head over hooves for Ceres.

She feels the same way - it's obvious to everyone around them, even if she never says so. Heavens forbid, she even debates herself silently on whether or not to give him her celestial robes to take him as her husband. As far as anyone can see, this tennyo and faun are a representation of the truest form of love. The bards have written songs based on their shows of affection, the scholars have noted their actions for future generations to look upon as proof of love's existence. As innocent as the two of them are, planning to propose to one another in a worthwhile way without letting the other catch on to their schemes, the entire city supports them at this point. Everyone felt their love brighten the town.

It was all going splendidly until one day ago - the day tragedy struck. As Ceres bathes in a secluded pond, preparing herself to hand over her robes, but those exact robes are stolen from the branch she placed them upon. In a massive fit of jealousy, a lonely goblin learned about the tennin conditions for marriage and took it upon himself to snatch the opportunity to secure an eye-catching bride.

Despite outrage from everyone in the city, Ceres cannot disobey the laws of her kind. Bawling her eyes out, she begrudgingly follows the goblin to his home. Zuho, upon learning of the travesty, follows, losing sanity as he begs and pleads at their feet. He offers up anything and everything he owns to the goblin in a desperate attempt to earn the hagoromo for himself, but the goblin doesn't budge - rather, he enjoys seeing the faun dirtying his fur to beg him for the item.

He slams the door to his small abode in Zuho's face with an evil smile. Unable to muster the energy to return to the city, Zuho stays on the ground for hours and hears them finalize the marriage. With that final step complete, Zuho feels his heart snap into a million pieces, falling upon the loose dirt in front of the home.

As his tears slow, he wonders whether he stalled too long to ask Ceres to marry him. At this point, he feels as if the gods must be spiting him for some reason. Wondering what he could've done to deserve the torture he received, he lifts his head from the table to see a cookie sitting on a napkin next to his drink. He looks over to Cupid, who is busy cleaning mugs. Silently thanking his friend, he wipes away the remaining tears and takes a big bite of the cookie.

Although certain he hasn't had one before, the cookie tastes oddly familiar - sweet with touches of familiar magic mixed into the cinnamon and sugar. He closes his eyes as he takes another bite, savoring the flavor in an attempt to identify the source of the familiarity.

Suddenly, an all too familiar voice graces his ears. As if he traveled back in time, he opens his eyes to find Ceres talking to Cupid at the counter, in the same blue silk from the first time he laid eyes on her. Even the cookie has disappeared from his hand, and the mocha is replaced by a latte.

"Can I try the house coffee? It's my first time here."

The rain pitter-patters against the window and the soft sound creates the perfect ambience for your rare lazy morning. Taking advantage of the peaceful and quiet atmosphere, the television stays turned off. It’s just as well, because neither you nor Juho seem to be able to tear your eyes off each other. But who could blame you, when the morning light makes his features look so ethereal.

“You’re staring,” he mumbles around a bite of his food. The breakfast you’ve prepared together is simple yet delicious. That’s the secret ingredient - love, Juho has joked, and even if you’ve rolled your eyes then, a smile tugs at your lips at the memory.

“So are you,” you counter, voice equally quiet so as to not distract from the sound of rain. The view must be ridiculous - you, sitting inside what could easily be described as a nest made of blankets and pillows, all messy from being awake for less than an hour, and wearing the only piece of one-size-fits-all clothing that actually seems like it could fit anyone. It’s ridiculously warm and fluffy, and it has a hood and it’s long enough for you to curl in it like it’s a short blanket or a long hoodie. And it’s a neon green color that is no less ridiculous than the bright blue one Juho’s wearing. Truly a pair of fools.

“Because I love you,” he says with a self-satisfied grin. He's lucky he's cute.

"Has it ever occurred to you that I love you too?" you tease, reaching out with your fork to steal a bite from his plate. He defends against your half-hearted attack easily, so you let it go with only a hint of a pout on your lips.

"How does take out sound for lunch?" he asks, "Since we've already cooked today."

"Absolutely not," you deadpan. It was only yesterday that you told him you should really eat some hearty, delicious, and most importantly healthy meal. It's not like you feel like cooking, but at least one of you should be the voice of reason. No matter how much the other whines.

"We made the breakfast healthy enough," he tries to sway you. You look at the plate while you chew the bite you've taken. His statement is a little questionable. Unfortunately, not enough that it'd make your logic kick in. The image of a lazy day spent in bed is rather tempting…

"Ramen?" you suggest with a sigh. Maybe you'll feel less guilty if you do at least some cooking.

"Ramen it is!" Juho beams, a ray of sunlight shining through the clouds. You don't get why he's so obsessed with it. Whatever makes him happy, you guess.

"But you're helping me cook tomorrow, for real."

"Sure."

Happy and a only little dismayed by how easy it is to persuade yourself that one more day of unhealthy food is not going to hurt, you keep eating. It's quiet and the gentle ambience of rain reaches your ears once again.

It's not until you finish your food that you notice Juho's still half-full plate. You frown and look up at him only to be met with a fond expression on his face. He must've been staring at you for a while. He speaks up before you can.

“I hoped I’d meet someone like you for a long time," he sighs with a wistful smile. Your mind blanks for a second. You have to look away and watch the raindrops race across the window because you can't hold his loving gaze any longer.

"That came out of nowhere," you mutter, trying hard to calm your erratic heart. He chuckles, shrugging.

"Look at us," his voice is as soft as the look in his eyes, "We're a mess but we keep staring at each other, we made breakfast, we'll stuff ourselves full with ramen later. I don't think we'll get out of bed much today."

"Your point?"

It's not that you don't like it. It's just that you haven't felt the butterflies in your stomach this strongly in a while and you don't know how to cope with that.

"I don't think just anyone can love like that," he says, now turning sheepish himself, "So thank you."

Softening at his shyness, you put a hand on his knee and squeeze.

"Thank you too," you give Juho a reassuring smile, "I couldn't imagine a better boyfriend."

He gasps, dramatically clutching at his chest as if your words have wounded him terribly.

"Boyfriend?" he scoffs, keeping up the charade. His eyes roll towards the ceiling like he can't believe his ears.

"Is there anything you'd like to tell me, love?" you quirk a brow at him, very much amused and in disbelief.

"Not yet," he grumbles and drops the act. He scoots closer until your knees bump together and he can pull you closer to him. His lips find your forehead. "Boyfriend is alright, for now."

You hum, shifting even closer to him. You lay your head on his shoulder and close your eyes. The rain outside is picking up, and you realize that there's probably not enough food to make anything but ramen for lunch even if you wanted to. Whatever, Juho loves it and nothing can beat warm ramen on a cold day.

When You Celebrate Your Birthday With Them ~ SF9 Reaction

Inseong:

Your head shook in disbelief as you pulled the wrapping paper away from the first present that Inseong gave you to unwrap.

“I paid attention and remember,” he laughed as you pulled the paper away from the ornament that he had bought you, one that you had seen in a shop a couple of weeks ago.

“It’s perfect,” you smiled back across at him, having regretted not getting it at the time.

Inseong’s smile was wide too as you studied the ornament properly, “I could tell that you wanted it the other day, but it was just a little too far out of your price range.”

“I really did,” you chuckled, “I can’t believe you went back and got it, I didn’t think you were listening to me that day.”

“How dare you, I always listen to you.”

Your head soon shook back at Inseong, “you hardly ever pay attention to me, but I think just this time I can give you credit.”

“I can always take it back,” Inseong joked.

“No, this is mine now.”

Youngbin:

Your hands came up to rub the sleep out of your eyes, stretching yourself out before rolling onto your side to see Youngbin awake beside you.

“Happy birthday,” he whispered, leaning across and pressing a gentle kiss to your cheek, “I hope you’ve slept well because you’ve got a super busy day ahead of you today.”

“I thought you said that we weren’t doing much,” you frowned back across to Youngbin.

His eyes rolled as you spoke, “did you really think that I was going to let your birthday pass doing nothing? I only said that to stop you trying to figure things out.”

“What have you got planned?” You laughed, beginning to fear the worst as you noticed the spark that was in Youngbin’s eyes.

“I promise that you will enjoy all of it.”

Your eyes narrowed back at him, drawn to the smile that was on his face. “There better not be any surprises along the way.”

“There might be one or two,” he teased.

“You’re in so much trouble Kim Youngbin.”

Jaeyoon:

Your head shook as soon as you walked into the studio, with balloons, banners and plenty of gifts scattered all over the place.

“Happy birthday,” Jaeyoon laughed across to you as he noticed you walking in, heading in your direction with his hand outstretched for you to take a hold of.

“Aren’t you guys supposed to be working?” You joked, taking a good look around the place.

Jaeyoon nodded in reply to you, “we’ve been working very hard all morning setting this up for you, and now we can work hard celebrating your birthday too.”

“You guys are adorable,” you told them all, meeting the eyes of all of them too, “you didn’t need to do any of this for me though.”

“It’s your birthday, of course we did Y/N.”

You smiled appreciatively across at Youngbin, finding yourself being pulled in the direction of your gifts. “I hope you guys didn’t buy too much.”

“We might’ve gone a bit over the top,” Jaeyoon grinned.

“I had a feeling that you would.”

Dawon:

Your smile was wide as you slid underneath the duvet beside Sanghyuk, his arm stretching out for you to lay over, curling into his side.

“Have you had a good birthday?” Sanghyuk asked you, pressing a kiss against the side of your head as you made yourself comfortable. “I’ve loved celebrating just you today.”

“It’s been the best birthday, all thanks to you,” you told him, offering Sanghyuk a wide smile.

His head nodded, relieved that you’d had as good of a day as he’d hoped you would. “I hope you know that I’ve got high expectations for my birthday now.”

“You’ve set the bar super high,” you grumbled, “I’m going to have to pull out all the stops when it comes to your birthday now.”

“Just being with you is all that I’ll want.”

Your eyes rolled, knowing that he was lying. “I told you time with you was all that I wanted and look at all of the things that you did for me.”

“I just like to spoil you,” he admitted.

“Well, you’ve definitely done that.”

Zuho:

Your eyes snapped across the table as you heard Juho clear his throat, looking expectantly across at him as you waited to hear what he had to say.

“Your birthday is coming up,” he reminded you, watching your smile drop, “and we need to start making plans…and don’t say nothing before we start, we’re not doing nothing for you.”

“I don’t need any fuss, I know that you’re busy Ju,” you quickly tried to explain to him.

His head shook back at you, his eyes staying firmly on you. “It’s the one day of the year that’s all about you, there is no way I’m letting it pass without doing a thing.”

“Maybe we could go for dinner,” you suggested, watching Juho’s smile turn up, “just an evening with you and me is all that I want to do.”

“What about if maybe I cooked for you instead?”

Your head nodded in reply to Juho’s proposition, “don’t go cooking anything fancy though, otherwise we’ll end up eating nothing.”

“I’m not that bad of a cook,” he protested.

“I’ve seen your cooking remember.”

Rowoon:

You were reluctant to move in response to the knock at your door, slowly walking across and opening it up, staring out into darkness.

“I hope I’m not too late,” a voice whispered, bringing your eyes to the left to see Seokwoo stood at your door, a shy smile on your face. “I’m sorry that I wasn’t able to get here sooner.”

“What are you doing here? I thought you said that you had to work all day?” You quizzed.

Seokwoo nodded as you stepped to the side allowing him to walk into your apartment. “I rushed filming quite a bit to make sure that I could get here before midnight.”

“You didn’t need to do that,” you smiled back at him, closing the door, “I was quite enjoying a lazy birthday just laid out on the sofa.”

“I can go back to my house if you want me too.”

Your head shook as Seokwoo jokingly went to walk back out of the door, “I’d much prefer finishing my birthday with you here though.”

“I was hoping you’d say that,” he teased.

“Thank you for making the effort.”

Yoo Taeyang:

You were cautious in front of Taeyang as he had his hands covering over your eyes, carefully leading you after getting you from the front door.

“Ready? One, two, three,” he counted down once he had you in position, moving his hands away from your eyes so that you could see the celebrations in your living room.

“Did you do this?” You laughed to Taeyang behind you, catching his head nodding back at you.

His smile was wide as he saw how bright your eyes were, taking it all in. “You always do so much for others, tonight is finally a chance for us all to celebrate you instead.”

“Thank you,” you grinned, leaning across and pressing a kiss to Taeyang’s cheek, “I can’t even begin to tell you how adorable all of this is Taeyang.”

“I take it that you’re happy with what I’ve done?”

The smile on your face was the only answer that Taeyang needed, “it’s amazing, how did you manage to keep all of this is a secret?”

“There were almost a few near misses,” he admitted.

“It’s perfect, I couldn’t ask for more.”

Hwiyoung:

Your steps were slow as you walked down the stairs, sighing softly to yourself. On the sofa, Youngkyun’s head snapped around spotting you.

“Happy birthday,” he cheered, standing up straight away and walking across to you, taking a hold of both of your hands. “Where’s your smile? It’s your birthday?” Youngkyun asked.

“I’m not really big on birthdays, it’s just another year of getting older,” you shrugged in reply.

Your response took Youngkyun by surprise as his puzzled eyes looked across to you. “Clearly you have never celebrated your birthday in the right way if you don’t enjoy it.”

“We don’t have to do anything,” you tried to argue, but Youngkyun quickly shushed you, tickling against your sides to stop you from saying anything else.

“I’m going to make sure that I change your mind today.”

Your head nodded, excited to see what Youngkyun could come up with for the two of you. “How much have you got planned today?”

“Today is going to knock your socks off,” he promised.

“I’m excited to see what’s ahead.”

Chani:

Your eyes widened as you looked to Chanhee, taking the two tickets that you had in the envelope out, reading through what was written on them.

“Surprise,” he chuckled, smiling widely at the look on your face, your head shaking as you struggled to believe what you were reading through. “I told you I had one last present.”

“Is this for real?” You asked him, reading over the destination of the flight tickets several times.

Chanhee nodded in reply to you, moving across the room to sit beside you. “It’s been ages since you got to go home, so I wanted to arrange for you to head back for a while.”

“Is the other ticket for you?” You quizzed, handing it across to him and placing it into his lap, spotting that his head was still nodding back across to you.

“I mean you can take someone else if you want to.”

Your head immediately shook in reply, “my family would kill me if I took anyone else, plus you’re the only one that I want to take anyway.”

“As birthday presents go, how does this rank?” Chanhee joked.

“It’s the best that I’ve ever had.”
