The suicide of a young unemployed South Korean is drawing attention after President Moon Jae-in mentioned it in his administrative policy speech on June 12 before the National Assembly.
Moon mentioned the story of the young person, who committed suicide by jumping in the Han River after leaving a text message for his parents saying he would “study harder in the next life,” to underscore the importance of employment policies for young people.
According accounts on June 12 from Seoul Gwangjin Police Station, the 23-year-old surnamed Lee was found dead on May 27 underneath Jamsil Bridge in Seoul’s Gwangjin district. After leaving the home where he lived with his parents in Uijeongbu, Gyeonggi Province, on May 23, Lee sent a text message to his parents around 5 am on May 24. The message reportedly read, “I‘ll study harder in the next life. I’m sorry.”
After graduating high school, Lee went to work at a local semiconductor manufacturer instead of university, but he did not remain employed there long. His efforts to find other work were not successful, and he was reportedly troubled by debts in the millions of won (thousands of US dollars) from an overseas backpacking trip he took with a friend to raise his spirits.
News of Lee’s experience inspired calls to awaken to the severity of the youth unemployment problem and a reality in South Korea where one’s living standard is determined by university entrance.
“I’ve been thinking again about education in South Korea, where people have been reduced to tools for study,” wrote Seoul education superintendent Cho Hee-yeon in a June 10 tweet.
“It weighs heavy on my heart when a young person writes, ’I‘ll study harder in the next life.’”
