Currently reading: About a million things, because I juggle about 50 books at the same time. Just picked up ‘The Far Side of the World’ by Patrick O’Brian, the tenth book in the Aubrey Maturin series. And then probably tonight going to start the second book in Alexei Tolstoy’s Хождение по мукам trilogy. (’The Agony’ or ‘The Road to Cavalry’ are the usual translations, I think. The English translation (s?) seem to be out of print, which is a shame because I think my dad would like this series. I found some used copies online, but generally in not great condition, and too expensive for a used book in kind of crap shape.) 

Last series: Obi-Wan Kenobi

Last movie: Some thriller on Hulu with Casey Affleck in it. It had ‘Eyes’ in the title; I can’t be assed to look it up. It was boring and I didn’t bother finishing it.

Currently working on: Writing wise: a one-shot featuring stupidity. Health wise: keeping up my meditation practice so I don’t stroke out every time I’m reminded of Roe v. Wade or the fact that I’m related to people with garbage political opinions.

Alicent and ‘The White Princess’

I really feel that people who are so aggressively against Alicent Hightower’s actions in House of the Dragon should watch The White Princess, as it demonstrates exactly what her sons’ fates would be if Rhaenyra inherited the throne.

The White Princess begins with the marriage of Elizabeth of York to Henry Tudor, and covers the early years of his reign after winning the War of the Roses. Much of the show is about the many Yorkist rebellions Henry faced, as the remaining York loyalists sought to place a York once again on the throne.

One subplot in The White Princess is about Edward Plantagenet, the Earl of Warwick, who had a claim to the throne and was potentially seen at one point as a successor to Richard III. Very soon after Henry takes the throne, Edward - referred to as Teddy - is imprisoned in the Tower. Despite his sister’s constant pleas for his freedom, he remains there for over a decade until he is implicated in a plot to escape and is exceuted.

The main conflict is about Perkin Warbeck, who claims to be Prince Richard, one of the Princes murdered in the tower. In the show, he is confirmed to be Prince Richard - making him a legitimate York heir as the son of Edward IV and Elizabeth Woodville - and he gains the support of much of Europe, raises an army, and invades England. The plot of The White Princess goes on, and ultimately he is imprisoned alongside Teddy and excecuted as well.

Both Teddy and Perkin Warbeck were seen as threats to Henry Tudor’s reign because they were York heirs with strong claims to the throne. Factions were constantly mobilising in support of their respective claims and fighting the Tudors in their name. And so they were eliminated to secure Henry’s reign.

The politics of Westeros does not directly correlate with the politics of Tudor England, but still, if Rhaenrya inherited the throne, Alicent’s sons would face the same fates as these York heirs - either longterm imprisonment or exceution.

As Aegon and Aemond are both the trueborn sons of the last king, it seems even more likely that they would share the dire fates of Teddy and Perkin.

In the final episode, Elizabeth of York encourages Henry Tudor to pretend to kill Perkin Warbeck to remove him as a threat to their rule (although, for plot reasons, the real Perkin does also get excecuted). And she says to Henry:

If you applied this to Rhaenyra it would be: The only way I can protect my sons [and my crown] is by telling the world I killed [Aegon and Aemond].*

This is what Alicent is protecting her sons against. This is one of the reasons her anger and fear is completely justified.

*Helaena may be safe, as Viserys didn’t alter the rules of succession for Westeros, so she wouldn’t really pose a threat to Rhaenyra or her children inheriting the throne. Though any sons she had would be in danger... 

This is all explained far better by @hellsbellschime​ in their post How Alicent Hightower Was Forced Into War; this just illustrates how it likely would play out just as it did for the York claimants in The White Princess.

+ Also, I sympathise with Alicent’s actions because of what Elizabeth of York says in the same scene, about the right to rule:

Why shouldn’t Alicent work to take the right to rule for her children, when their lives are at stake?

Why do I get the feeling that GRRM is writing some horrible death scene for her

WELL my personal theory is that Arya is going to kill her and it's going to mirror Maegor's death, i.e. he was just found on the Iron Throne looking like the throne itself killed him and no one knows who actually did it, but yeah I don't think GRRM is going to go super soft on her after the whole mass genocide thing either way.

Well, I said “small”, but it’s grown into a big shitstorm seemingly within a day 💀 @/ozymalek made a wonderful video debunking @/hellsbellschime/Hill’s Alive’s notoriously biased Daenerys “analysis” videos, backed with sources from the book and some pretty well articulated counter arguments to the things HA (Hill’s Alive) says in a lot of her Dany videos. HA and her attack dogs found out about it and are now trying to swarm the comments, attacking @/ozymalek for everything BUT their argument 😂 Now the video has been posted on r/HOTDGreens (where a lot of Stansas have converted into Alicent stans) so there’s even more theatrics and insults being thrown around. But no one has attempted to debate anything addressed in Ozy’s video, so I guess that means that Ozy’s argument was just that good… or that Stansas know that they have literally no evidence to even begin to make a coherent argument. All in all, it’s been funny watching them throw petty insults in lieu of any coherent points.

Wow, that's...a lot. But also it's unfortunately not surprising because that's how Stansas like to operate. They have made it perfectly clear that they don't care about the source material, they're only invested in making their fave look good. I'll have to watch the response video and show some support. It's such a shame that there's so little space for actual discussions about the books. This fandom is really just a big popularity contest and stans seem to think they can "win" if they ignore canon hard enough. That's why they never back up their claims using the books. Most of them have probably never even read them.

I've only heard of HA and their videos very recently. I'm not surprised they never back up their claims considering their "proof" for Dany turning evil is that she kills slavers. Imagine arguing that kill slavers and abolishing slavery is a bad thing? Makes sense that they're a zionist just like their fave Sophie T@rner 🙄. I know these people hope and pray everyday that TWOW never gets released so that their delusions aren't broken.

Watching them scramble when faced with actual facts is hilarious but I hope the person who made the response video is doing okay. Even when it's by idiots, harassment is still hard to deal with. Youtube and Reddit are hellscapes full of biased stans and misinformation. I hope they aren't discouraged from making more, fact-based videos because they're desperately needed.

Hill's Alive is hellsbellschime on tumblr. I hate her channel so much. The only reason her channel is popular is because most of her videos are about how evil Daenerys and the Targaryens are. Not only her takes are awful and wildly incorrect, her previous video on Rhaenyra had so many repugnant comments calling Rhaenyra bed hopper and disgusting for having bastards. She loves using misogynistic talking points against her hated female characters while prioritizing a specific type of female character (Sansa and Alicent).

She’s also a Klaroline stan actually and harassed Phoebe Tonkin so much that Phoebe herself got wind of it and specifically called her out by username and asked her to stop the harassment.

She knows her audience is mostly raging incels, dudebros and Targ haters who never read the books but do read the Reddit threads and watch YouTube essays. She knows she can leave out HUGE chunks of the text and key passages to lie about Daenerys because her audience won’t call her out. She also started making shit up about the Hightowers to please her anti Targ incel audience. The Hightowers are Valyrians (or better yet Velaryons) now but also they are from the Great Empire of the Dawn but also they are Daynes but also they are First Men but also they have magic but also. The gymnastics she does for making them relevant to the main story is INSANE.

I was in the TVD fandom so I heard about Phoebe Tonkin being bullied by Klaroline shippers. I'm a Klaroline shipper myself, but it's crazy how people don't make the difference between fictional characters and actors. Phoebe isn't Haley, Joseph isn't Klaus, and Candice isn't Caroline. TVD shippers were wild, it happened with Delena stans too. Again, I've always been a Delena shipper but it was crazy how fans reacted to Nina and Ian breaking up and him marrying Nikki Reed. Nina isn't Elena and Ian isn't Damon: they're real people, not their fictional characters, leave them alone ffs.

Phoebe was absolutely right to call her out, stop harrassing this woman who's never done anything to you...

no, it was never alicent's children righys. Viserys, the king, claimed rhaenyra, his first born child as his heir. So Alicent hiding his death body, not telling Rhaenyra and claiming his son as the king was in fact a power hungry move and a treason to the crown and true heir

the thing is though, house targaryen and every other noble house beforehand operated by “the eldest male child takes over”.

it was the social norm, something alicent was no doubt raised on, so why shouldn’t she expect it to be any different, especially when rhaenyra was made heir before viserys had any trueborn sons.

speaking of viserys, if he wanted rhaenyra as his sole heir, why marry alicent, why have more children? why not change the laws in westeros that it shouldn’t matter what the gender of the oldest child is, they should be heir? it reads to me as “the rules should apply to everyone except for me and society just needs to deal with it”.

honestly it’s a whole mess, and i’m in no way saying that some pretty sketchy moves weren’t made by all involved. but it’s really viserys who started the whole mess in the first place.

I didn't always dislike Sansa as much as I do now, it took me quite some time to realize it, actually. And believe it or not, Hillary and I don't 100% agree on absolutely everything, lmaoo.
